Isaac Levitan (1860-1900) was a Russian painter who advanced the genre of the "mood landscape." Born into a poor but educated Jewish family in Augustów, in what is now northeastern Poland, he entered art school in Moscow at only 13. Among his teachers was Alexei Savrasov, who taught students to paint en plein air. This Golden Autumn dates from 1895. From 1897 Levitan headed the landscape studio at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Levitan, suffering from heart disease, died in June 1900, aged only 39.

Always precious

Ten years ago, you were found precious. That's what you are, always. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:09, 12 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

October thanks

edit

Thank you for your appreciation! My story is about a composer and choir conductor, listen to his Lamento. - My story on 13 October was about a Bach cantata. As this place works, it's on the Main page now because of the date (but Bach wrote it for the 20th Sunday, not the Tuesday after the 21st Sunday after Trinity). I sort of like it because today is the birth date of my grandfather who loved and grew dahlias like those pictured. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:34, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Homemade pickles
Well, my (maternal) grandfather -- who was of Swiss-German descent -- made his own dill pickles. His entire back yard was a cucumber patch. -- Sca (talk) 13:46, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Was he in the club?? Martinevans123 (talk) 13:55, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

— No, but he was in Kiwanis, Rotary, and the Big Frog Small Pond Club. -- Sca (talk) 15:00, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

(ec) Interesting. My (maternal) grandparents - where I spent most summer holidays from age 5 to 10 - had a large property (former barracks): the front garden was dominated by a broad band of dahlias and other flowers, framing rows of cucumbers and dill (!), lettuce, herbs, radishes, carrots ..., behind the house fruit trees with strawberries and potatoes underneath, and to the side berries, asparagus and a fenced area for chicken and a goat. Paradise. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:59, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
You said it! Martinevans123 (talk) 14:04, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Relatives claimed Grandpa's secret pickle ingredient was cigarette ashes. -- Sca (talk) 12:31, 23 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
interesting! - Happy whatever you celebrate today, - more who died, more to come, and they made the world richer. Greetings from Madrid where I took the pic in 2016. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:50, 31 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
War eine Witze, natürlich. -- Sca (talk) 20:35, 31 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

November music

For a surprise, a Bach cantata is on the Main page today, where it was last year for the 300th anniversary, and they were too lazy to find something new ;) - Look at my story, and listen to the 3 whole-tone steps and the dialogues of Fear and Hope. - An open letter open to be signed (more info on the talk), - I haven't checked if you did, please ignore then. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:05, 7 November 2024 (UTC) <sep> Madeleine Riffaud - remember. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:36, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

An interesting and heroic person for sure. Thanks. -- Sca (talk) 16:40, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
