ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:49, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Oh hi

I modified your block a bit here. Hope that's ok with you! -- Ponyobons mots 23:42, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

You are more than welcome to modify any of my actions, so no worries. I've been trying to err on the side of leniency while I'm still getting my sea legs, so if you ever think things need to be tightened up a bit I have no objections. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 23:49, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Martin Scorsese

Hi, thanks for your help at Martin Scorsese. The semi-protection you put in is indeed longer than the previous semi-protection of one month but you might take a look at the page's protection history and consider making the protection longer. It was semi-protected for one year then inexplicably semi-protected for a much shorter period of time after the egregious vandalism returned almost immediately after. The subject of the article is also a living person and the page has been under constant attack for a very long time. Would you mind taking a look at the page's protection history and consider making the semi-protection longer? Thanks. Elkono (talk) 01:17, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Bumped it up to 2 years. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 01:32, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Could you please help me with dealing with a possibly disruptive editor?

If not, if you could help point me in the right direction that would be incredibly appreciated.

So, I recently edited the page for "Appalachian Mountains" to remove the country of France from it's list of countries. It may have been added mistakenly by someone thinking it was the Alps. However minutes later the user Tedickey reverted my edit without reason. When I asked them to provide one, they deleted my request from their talk page without answer. I looked at their user talk history and it seems they have been doing this to quite a few editors such as user Somatiformula who stated, "Wow. You have a pretty extensive track record of rejecting edits that you later submit. ‘Cleaned up talk page for suggestion of improvements.’ Hah. After submitting four ridiculous replies in rapid succession. You are POWER!"

As editors, we endeavor to make Wikipedia a better place, and I believe Tedickey is harming our community of editors by their actions. If you could please help in any way that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! - BananaSepps (talk) 01:51, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

While your edit was no doubt in good faith, the Appalachians technically do extend into French territory; see my note here. OhNoitsJamie Talk 01:58, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Why are you always targeted by LTA's?

I always see around 3 times the impersonators for you then for any other admin on the block log. (I patrol them for fun). Why is this the case?

Likely because I block quite a few of them. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 17:32, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Today in Heckville

Hey there, not sure where exactly to mention this, but thought it bore mentioning that the new owner of Twitter has been on something of a Jeremiad against this site. Having said something to an administrator, I feel I have discharged my duty. Cheers. Dumuzid (talk) 20:54, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

That is a better venue. I don't really do the twitter thing, although from what I've seen there's a non-zero chance that Musk would tweet back at me if I tweeted at (to?) him telling him I was a Wikipedia administrator. A request

I have already seen it, but to save others from stumbling upon such disgusting garbage, please revdel your edit summary reverting that LTA in the ongoing RFA. Also delete their userpage and talk page, to prevent it appearing in search results. I don't understand why you left a block message for someone who couldn't possibly be here in good faith. This guide by Beeblebrox is a useful for how to handle different kinds of username violations. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 18:54, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) That deletion was quite appropriate; the username has also been hidden. The only way to hide the username from search results is to contact the stewards asking for it to be suppressed. If (either of) you would prefer, I can do so. Vanamonde (Talk) 19:30, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
I left it because I was sitting in a restaurant with my wife waiting for our brunch. Seeing the edits, I tried to take care of what I could as quick as possible, but Sunday brunch with my wife trumps Wikipedia, so I put my phone away after the immediate disruption was ended. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 19:33, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
I'm just glad someone actually read one of my essays. Beeblebrox (talk) 04:24, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
I don't remember where, but found it sometime ago when someone had mentioned it as the best guideline for admins to handle username blocks. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 05:19, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
I have asked stewards to glock and hide the username. As I understand, that hides it from CentralAuth logs, but the locally created pages still appear as search suggestions, for example as someone starts typing User talk:MalnadachBot, which is why I asked for deletion. Sorry if I was harsh in my post, I appreciate you taking your time to quickly end the disruption. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 05:19, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
I've locally suppressed the usernames (yes, there was a new one this morning). Drop me an email if any more pop up that I don't see first. Primefac (talk) 09:44, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, peoples rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension.

You're right. I'm wrong. Learned something. — rsjaffe 🗣️ 21:58, 17 December 2022 (UTC)
rsjaffe, I wouldn't go that far, it's just a matter of personal style. I'm willing to let them whine and taunt with no response because I think in many cases being ignored is more likely to make them stop, whereas getting a response makes them think they're getting to you, which can lead to further disruption. Who really knows though? Maybe pulling TPA or just reverting may have worked better?
That said, if they cross certain lines or escalate the disruption I normally pull TPA with no additional comment. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 23:35, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

December 2022

Someone needs to say Seasons Greeting and Happy New Year on this User talk page. Scottish, you did a close on a RFC at "2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine" a few months ago with success, and I am wondering if you could take a look at another still open RFC there now which is past due for being closed. Any chance that you could give it a look sometime before the New Year? ErnestKrause (talk) 16:20, 28 December 2022 (UTC)

I don't have time at the moment to write up a full closing statement, but I also don't see that it necessarily needs formal closure. It's a pretty clear case of no consensus yet again. I'll try to get around to it in the next few days, though, if you think it's necessary. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 00:35, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
That actually wpuld be quite useful and anytime during the next few days or the next week would be nice to see the close. Your previous close was very adequate to the task. (And, Greetings for the New Year). ErnestKrause (talk) 15:24, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

Miracle of Lanciano

Could you help me in the following case: Miracle of Lanciano. It is about Catholic belief that a miracle happened in the 8th century. In the article a passage named "scientific tests" were inserted, which were invented for the most part. Several users have pointed out that falsified sources are used here (see discussion page). I have deleted this invented passage. A fundamentalist user now reinserts this faked nonsense: Rafelosornio. What can I do? Where can I report this? I consider the reinsertion of fake sources as downright vandalism. Please look at the nonsense passed off as encyclopedic knowledge in this article.Mr. bobby (talk) 09:25, 27 December 2022 (UTC)

WP:RSN is the place to discuss sourcing issues. If there are multiple users pointing out the issue, and the other editor continues to edit against consensus it may be worth writing up a report at WP:ANI. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 00:40, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
Also Mr. bobby, please keep your comments focused on content and not contributor, it's not great to call other users fundamentalists. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 00:49, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
I would like to report this very user personally. This is clearly vandalism: several users have expressed that almost all sources in the article are unscientific, manipulative, and based on POV internet sites. This is in full detail on the article's discussion page. I have deleted several fake sources individually, tw. with individual justifications in the change comment. Nevertheless Rafaelosornio reverts all (!) reverts with the reference to a single source, which is nowhere quoted appropriately! Where can I report this as vandalism?Mr. bobby (talk) 17:12, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
Well, I tried: WP:ANI.Mr. bobby (talk) 17:25, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

@Roman Reigns Fanboy: While their talk page comments aren't great there, I don't think it rises to the level of blocking further. I suggest you wait until the block expires, and if the behavior doesn't change then you can bring them to WP:ANI to see if there is consensus for action. We also only exclude opinions in the most drastic of situations, and I don't believe they're near the point where they would be blocked simply for ideological viewpoint. In your copious free time....

Would you mind having a quick look at Talk:The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? There are some SPAs and IPs kind of forum-ing up the place. Were I a stranger to the page, I would probably be removing stuff, but as I am quite involved, I don't. I am mostly just seeking a temperature check on myself; to be clear, either "this is all fine" or "not great, but nothing to be done" would be completely acceptable answers. If you are too busy, no worries. Cheers. Dumuzid (talk) 18:55, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

I'll take a peek. This'll teach me to work on an article! ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 19:06, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
There's definitely a lot of repetition and notaforum going on. The first thing that has to happen is people need to stop engaging, because I wouldn't be comfortable removing replies to a quasi-active discussion that good faith contributors are taking part in. In the future, when people create new sections, removing them as duplicate discussion/notaforum is pretty reasonable. I've added the page to my watchlist, so I'll be keeping an eye on it too. Treynich87, no worries, it happens. To expand on the templated warnings and such on your talk page misgendering and pronoun shenanigans are common vandalism, and the response to such edits are generally very forceful. There is a strong community consensus around the use of pronouns and other gender identity matters and it's easy to run astray of that if you're not aware. Not a problem. Discerning consensus is normally easier than that one, but someone has to do it.
I personally don't have high hopes, but without a supervote I didn't see another way to close it. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 23:07, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
