{{help me}} A thousand thanks for the help! I am enjoying working on articles: a little friendly guidance, as you have shown, really motivates. Quick question now: I want to show a source for the table of contents (or TOC) for Exotic Gothic (or EG) and the other books in the series. Problem: WorldCat.org and Google Books show the Exotic Gothic series, but not the TOC. Do I then cite the publisher's page as a source (as it lists the TOC), do I give my college office page (which lists each TOC), or do I try to find some site done by another person/org/database entirely that lists the TOC (though again this may be a database constructed by users, like Goodreads, or ISFDB, etc.) Really appreciate any guidance. Much obliged. Seekbeauty (talk) 17:09, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Seekbeauty. I think none of the above. Though we encourage use of reliable secondary sources as opposed to primary sources (see WP:SECONDARY) here you are seeking to cite for the order in the book itself, and not to any analysis of the source. As such, I think using the publication itself as the source for the order of the table of contents is quite appropriate. Your question seems to presuppose that sources need to be available online. This is not the case. What we require is that sources that are cited be available to the public if they wished to check themselves. This can be books, newspapers, magazines, television programs, documentaries, etc, that are only in hardcopy or on film. Please see WP:IRS and Wikipedia:Published. I take it you have the publication, so just cite to it. If i misunderstood, please re-post your request, maybe with a clarification. Just as a side note, on Wikipedia the convention is that new posts go below old, and new threads go below old threads. In other words, normally, this thread would have been started at the bottom of your talk page.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:04, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Please read the Wikipedia manual of style, as well as the guidelines on reliable sources. The article has serious, serious format and style issues, and you can't use blocks and user websites as references in articles. This will help keep your article from getting rapidly deleted. - Thanks! I appreciate the time and effort you take, and the directions for this first article I write--the comments truly are welcomed. To have someone who has made 14,000 edits help truly means something.
- Yes, definitely I can remove all blogs and banish external links, though the blogs I had respect for as they weren't actually personal web logs, but ones created by either a department (like the English Dept. at Lone Star College, where its prof. pool is listed for all students) or a program (like the MLitt in Gothic Studies at Univ. of Stirling, Scotland). My understanding of blogs was nuanced to the point, from reading some of these Wiki instruction articles, that I thought some of them (if they were an official organ of a newspaper, college, university) were valuable or reasonably objective or at least edited, and thus could be used. On the other hand, there are enough sources in print about this Exotic Gothic series that I can cut any reference to departments and programs. Quick question, if another book I edited (not the EXOTIC GOTHIC series) says in its biography (published by Scarecrow Press, 2010) says I am teach at this college, can I cite that? Or should I stay only with the _Houston Chronicle_ article that says I teach at this college?
- Now the "blocks" you mentioned refer to my layout. I'm trying to model mine after a Wiki article that hasn't any flags, the one on "Dark Matter (series)", but I have a ways to go. E.g., sometimes my HTML commands like these === keep showing in the actual article and so I'm having trouble exhibiting the order from large the smaller items... Thanks for any quick fixes you see that could make this more uniform and helpful to readers. Hopefully, I will be able to fix it so it stays around (though if it disappears there are published authors that refer to the Exotic Gothic series in their entries).
- Much obliged for fixing that References problem I had yesterday!Seekbeauty (talk) 20:06, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- A good place to start is to read over Wikipedia:MOS, which has links to a lot of other sections here which can help you learn how to properly format the article. The key is making the "format" look like the other articles here, ie: so similar articles are consistent in layout. Another good place is to check out similar articles that exist here and are already "pretty enough". And don't let the 14,000 edits impress you much :) I'm just an editor like any other editor here, I've just been doing it a while. You don't get a watch or even a meal when you hit 10,000 edits around here. And I don't mind helping someone who is genuinely trying to contribute. Part of that contributing also means you need to get familiar with the guidelines here. WP:N WP:V and WP:RS are must reads. A bit dry, but they are the most important guidelines that will help you create and source articles that won't end up in the delete pile. And don't be afraid to EDIT articles. Honestly, editing and improving existing articles is really the best way to learn the wikicode anyway. I also took the liberty of creating a sandbox on your talk page. It explains itself, but it is basically a place to experiment with the wikicode, headers, etc. without worrying about messing up an article. Oh, And I will post an official welcome template, with links. You can delete any of this, or the new material, when it is no longer useful. I suggest always keeping the link to you sandbox, however, as you will use that no matter how long are you edit here.. Dennis Brown (talk) 21:08, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Good advice. So I'll good ahead then and use what Wikipedia calls primary verification, i.e., use the actual EG series books, which I have, as the source for my report in the article of what the three TOC's are and the order each story went in on each TOC. Thanks for helping me so rapidly, Fuhghettaboutit. Seekbeauty (talk) 19:29, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

editHi. In your recent article edits, you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Rely on References for giving this data, or create a new Section in the Article's TOC box?

In editing the Exotic Gothic article, I would like to note which original stories in the _Exotic Gothic_ Anthology Series have reappeared elsewhere later on. Depending on which book it is in the _Exotic Gothic_ Series, 20% to 35% of its original stories/new novel excerpts/novellas go on to resurface elsewhere, finding wider or foreign audiences. Some of the _Exotic Gothic_ were republished in print in 'Best of the Year' collections (some being chosen for reissue by editors from New York, London, Moscow, etc.), some were reprinted in foreign print magazines, and others were broadcast as Podcasts (after their authors were commissioned by a college to do so). Last, some of the stories go on to be nominated for this or that prize.
I thought noting the reappearances might be valuable: noting shows the fictions' continued life elsewhere (especially outside of America), and may suggest the Series is relevant or watch-worthy. Noting helps students find the stories in other form(the books are used in college classes), and raises the question of why some horror/fantasy authors and dark subjects matter greatly to public & editors right now.
But enough background on my part. Would you recommend I have a separate Section added to the TOC to put this data (perhaps called 'Legacy', 'Reappearance and Awards', or something better you suggest)? Or, would the article be streamlined and invite less repetition (i.e.,, having to name the story again, when it was already given once on each book's TOC), to put a Reference Number after each original story that has gone on to something bigger, and then a curious reader could just go to the Reference Section?
Any advice, WikiVets? Many thanks. Seekbeauty (talk) 18:39, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
- I don't mean to be trite, but the Exotic Gothic article is about Exotic Gothic -- the future life of those stories outside of Exotic Gothic really isn't important to Exotic Gothic itself and doesn't really warrant whole sections on the Exotic Gothic page. That being said, when a story has been published in multiple places by multiple people, it may be notable enough for you to create a page for it, or if the story itself isn't notable enough, then it would likely at least have a mention on the author's Wikipedia page. In those cases, you'd link to the story's page or the author's page from the Exotic Gothic page.
- Now, it looks like you have generally been doing a good job of using reliable secondary sources that are independent of Exotic Gothic for the Exotic Gothic article. I wasn't sure whether you'd realized (and I thought you might be happy to hear this), Exotic Gothic and its website are independent second hand source which you can use for story or author Wikipedia articles. If you'd like any further help, contact me on my user talk page or put a {{help me}} template up on your own user talk page and someone will be along to help you. :) Banaticus (talk) 23:44, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
I appreciate the very constructive ideas, Banaticus. And thanks for the approval on how the _Exotic Gothic_ sources are shaping up, which is cheering. Seekbeauty (talk) 02:58, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (File:EXOTIC GOTHIC 4 wraparound cover.jpg)
editThanks for uploading File:EXOTIC GOTHIC 4 wraparound cover.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:47, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Exotic Gothic 5 V2 Full Dust Jacket.jpg
editThank you for uploading File:Exotic Gothic 5 V2 Full Dust Jacket.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:33, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Hello and thanks for noting this. As the editor of the collection I can obtain a statement from both the publisher and the photographer to say that they would like the image to be used in the Wiki entry. Would that help, and how do I place the statements in? Please help or advise, so that I follow the convention as I should.
Thanks and best wishes.Seekbeauty (talk) 22:05, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
