Dearest Ser Amantio di Nicolao, how are you? Do you have, pelase, 5 minutes to read this new page and correct my mistakes?

Problem with multiple maps in Infobox Settlement

I think you should pause or modify your AWB run. What you're doing is generally a good idea, but when the |pushpin_image= parameter is used in {{Infobox settlement}}, the second map is broken. WikiProject Wildfire

edit

Hello! I have recently started a new WikiProject and am trying to recruit new members. The project, WikiProject Wildfire, focuses on articles that relate to wildfires. There is a lot of work that needs to be done. From updating templates, to classifying and improving articles. Any level of commitment is welcome! If you care to just add some input on the founding of the new project, awesome. If you would like to take an active role in editing articles, that is awesome as well! Knowledge of wildfires is NOT a prerequisite for joining the project. In fact, it would be great to have some members of the project who are NOT fire-buffs. That way we make sure that articles aren't just written by and for people in the fire community. If this is something you have any interest in, I would love to have you join the project! Please feel free to join the discussion or leave me a message on my talk page. (Note that you are receiving this message from me because I saw you made multiple edits on a wildfire related page, specifically Griffith Park Fire. Not just spamming you at random.) Hope you have a great day! Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:18, 2 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Category move Category:Earth satellites of Russia to Category:Earth observation satellites of Russia was wrong!

edit

It is absolutely wrong. GLONASS is a navigation satellite, Ekspress (satellite constellation) are communications satellites. All those are Earth satellites of Russia but no Earth observation! Russia also had satellites around other planets, that's why this category was done this way. I haven't been able to find the discussion for the move but whoever made it lacked a fundamental understanding about the artificial satellites nature. Now I have to go around and create new categories and go article by article seeing if it applies. – Baldusi (talk) 12:02, 8 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Stub class articles

edit

I noticed you added a top to a number of biography talk pages recently. Thanks for this. However, it did leave them all with a Stub-Class evaluation. I contributed the article John Cornwall (c.1366-1414) a few weeks ago. While I make no claims for the quality of the article, it seems to me that it's hardly a stub. For example, it contains over 6000 words, which is about the maximum recommended. It also has 108 citations, with a reference base of 44 books and websites. I'm not entirely sure how it came to be assessed as a stub, although it's one of many that received the same treatment. When an article is of reasonable length, I normally remove stub assessments and await someone from the Biography Project having a look, as happened more recently with John Burley. However, there are rather a lot to follow up here. I only raise this because I'm not entirely sure how Biography Project people work. Sjwells53 (talk) 12:43, 13 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your quick reply on this. I'll alter the ones I know about, but there may be many more. All of these are at least 2000 words in length. I imagine they'll be largely ignored by the project if marked in this way, though I don't know how they prioritise things. Sjwells53 (talk) 17:23, 13 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
I noticed also that all the articles I looked at included the entry "|listas=Golde, Adam", which I guess is incorrect in most cases. Sjwells53 (talk) 17:33, 13 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Also check where the WikiProject Politics of the United Kingdom template is used. This project only covers the period after 1707. All the entries I'm looking at are medieval or early modern, and none fall within its scope. Sjwells53 (talk) 17:42, 13 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Lea-Tuti Livšits

edit

The article Lea-Tuti Livšits has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not enough sourcing to satisfy WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Tavix (talk) 21:50, 20 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Gender categories, century categories etc

edit

Hi. Thanks for your edits, they are surely laborious, but please allow me to bring up two issues with them.

One is a particular note. As the editor of many articles on Romanian writers, I took care to sort out the categories, overall, by some recognizable criterion, and when you just drop the new categories you create in there somewhere I tend to despair after a while of finding them a place in the queue. I hope you can take some more time in noticing the pattern when you add them.

The second is a technical issue: Ser, I don't for the love of me understand why you enjoy making it so absurdly hard for your project by starting with generic and vague, and immensely vast, categories (Male essayists), dropping a random load of articles in there, instead of creating yourself the narrower categories (Category:Romanian male essayists, or even Category:Romanian 20th-century male essayists) from the beginning, and then putting the categories themselves into vaguer and vaguer ones.

By not working that, you make it a chore on everybody else to try and find out what other vague categories exist at this moment in time, but you also make it hard on yourself. One one hand, you revisit the same articles over and over again, each time narrowing the scope (isn't it exhausting?); on the other, it's much easier to keep track of what categories exist, and therefore much easier for others to help you include articles in them. Oh: and you also limit the sheer number of categories that pile up at the end of each article, and which in some cases (Felix Aderca jumps to mind) are so accumulated and hard to follow that they arguably defeat the very purpose of categorizing. Dahn (talk) 22:04, 29 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hm, small enough, you say? (There are quite enough there to validate a 19th-century category as well. Romanian literati were quite chatty in that very accessible genre.)
Also, mind you, I was not talking overcategorization (as in, putting Aderca into Category:Novelists, Category:Romanian novelists, Category:Romanian writers, Category:Romanian male writers etc.). The issue you create is a lot of valid categories, non redundant to each other, but so very many that the reader (and other editors) can't follow them. By creating directly the cross-sections of several categories (Category:20th-century Romanian male novelists, for instance), adding them to those would cut out about three categories that "pour" into that. Instead of keeping on adding categories to the foot of the article, you reduce them, and get the same effect you desire categorization-wise. Dahn (talk) 11:00, 30 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

But Ser, did I convince you to start your categorizing from the smaller conceivable categories to the larger, or at least to have a look into what categories include before you add more categories to the articles? For instance, would you consider making a Category:19th-century Romanian essayists before you put random articles/each and every article on a 19th-century Romanian essayist into Category:19th-century essayists, and then revisiting each and every article in that category to narrow it down (or expecting others to do it)? As long as this categorizing seems to be your prime focus, would you please consider thinking ahead, for your own sake if not for everyone else's? Dahn (talk) 12:20, 8 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for your recent edits of this nature. Can you please in future remember to also remove the parent category, saves someone else having to do it in the future. For example when you replace Category:Male boxers with Category:Canadian male boxers, there is no longer a need for Category:Canadian boxers. Thanks again. Paddy Barnes (Irish Boxer)

edit

Hi you recently changed the category on Paddy Barnes to "British male boxers" please note that he is not British, he was born in Northern Ireland (which is not part of Great Britain, but is part of the United Kingdom) and he has represented Northern Ireland previously and Ireland (which is neither Great Britain or United Kingdom) at the Rio 2016 Olympics. A Question

edit

Yours is the last friendly voice on my TALK page, so you are elected.

This morning I visited the Scott Turow article, and in my genomic style, decided to correct an unnecessary capitalization. I often am reminded to log in first by a popup which says my IP is blocked. Using smartphone, so shared IP 's, no worries. My wiki-persona, when logged in, is not blocked. But today, after logging in, a new popup appeared, red lettering, saying something to effect of: Some of my input is questionable (!?!) Are you familiar with such a popup? There was no detail, or explanation. Did not seem to be a link. I could not seem to reproduce it, so after editing, I logged off, and then logged on again. The notice did not reappear.

I recently had a run-in with someone who seems, at least in my limited experience, to be a rogue administrator. He has protected an editor who seems to be territorial and of limited ability. I have opted to back out of the entire situation. Wikipedia is such an enormous place, with so much work to be done, why should I quibble over someone's childishness. I can edit elsewhere. But this guy, at least once, has followed my comments on a user TALK page, and made veiled threats. Something to the effect that I was disruptive, and could be blocked. At the risk of sounding paranoid, I can't help but wonder if I'm being targeted. It really doesn't seem likely, especially since I very rarely edit these days, but is there somewhere I can inquire about my "questionable input", and who my accuser might be? Probably I should ignore the entire thing. On the other hand, in the past I have found that such questions, if not dealt with, can take on a life of their own. I once almost lost a real-life job over a total fiction, a rumor which circulated unbeknownst to me, which upon investigation by an official, had no substance whatsoever. Two years later a friend told me how close I had come to disaster. I hadn't a clue.

Any ideas you have would be helpful. I wish I could quote the popup box for you, but my memory's not the best. Anyway, no specifics were on offer, only deniable vagueness. Rags (talk) 12:58, 14 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

I think you are probably correct in your assessment. If there are any further developments, I will update you. ANI was primarily the answer to my question, but I will probably wait and see. The popup could easily be totally unrelated to the previous incident. And thank you for your quick response, as well as for the work you do here, gnomic and otherwise. Hi Ser, can you do me a favour and quickly send the following message to Category:WikiProject Turkey participants:♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:45, 19 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I was wondering if you'd be interested in setting up Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Turkey), based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). Now it's not a contest in itself, it's designed to motivate people to inspire others to improve content and build something which demonstrates the hard work going into the country which is visible. The focus is more on quality improvements but new articles are welcome too. Eventually a Turkish National Contest could be created to fuel it, like Wikipedia:Awaken the Dragon, in which contestants can choose to keep the Amazon vouchers themselves to buy their own books for more articles or put them into book fund to help editors further improve Turkish-related topics by giving them the books they want. It will begin though as purely an improvement drive. If interested, or you think anybody else might be interested, alert them and sign up on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Turkey talk page at the bottom. Thankyou.

Wow that was quick! Thanks!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:04, 19 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ser. Can you use that message tool to notify all of the editors of WP Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Greeland and Faroe Islands about Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic)? Something shorter and simple like:

Hi. I was wondering if you would be interested in contributing articles to Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic)? It needs contributors to increase diversity of content from different countries and bring about large scale improvements. The idea at some point will be to host a National Contest related to your country of interest. Thanks.

Hi, this sounds like a great project. I'm not sure if I have time right now to help, but I can try. Extended confirmed protection

edit

Hello, Ser Amantio di Nicolao. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi, can you do me a favour and send out this to all listed members of WP:Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania?

Hi. I see you are listed as a member of a WikiProject of a Baltic state. I was wondering if anybody who actively works on Estonian, Lithuanian or Latvian articles, would be interested in launching your own Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Baltic), based on the Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic) and Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea would be to try to bring about 1000 article improvements and creations on this region as an enjoyable challenge and potentially things like National Contests with prizes. If you'd be interested and think it's something you might regularly contribute to, comment and sign up at Talk:Baltic states. If there is interest we can move this to a project somewhere and set something up, thanks. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:20, 26 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I was wondering if you could use the message sender to send out to all members of UK and Ireland projects, including the county ones. England alone has Category:WikiProject England. Obviously try to exclude the editors already signed up on the page though!

Hi, at Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge we're striving to bring about 10,000 article improvements and creations for the UK and Ireland and inspire others to create more content. In order to achieve this we need diversity of content, in all parts of the UK and Ireland on all topics. Eventually a regional contest will be held for all parts of the British Isles, like they were for Wales and the Wedt Country. We currently have just over 1900 articles and need contributors! If you think you'd be interested in collaborating on this and helping reach the target quicker, please sign up and begin listing your entries there as soon as possible! years in art

edit

surely you should also have the years project tag as well? JarrahTree 13:44, 30 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

When I have done runs, and Dimadick I am sure does it as well when he finds a patch - of years in something, the years seems to make a sense when there is just the main subject project only. I have a real aversion to using the time project as I feel it is derivative and nebulous, but years to me makes good sense JarrahTree 13:52, 30 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Dimadick and I's journey through the nether world of the talk page has led us to the thought many large edit main space compatriots do not have much of sympathy or understanding of project tagging and what it does for the health of the larger system... My metaphor is that main space only eds who never venture into talk space, are like people who check the water in the radiator, but always forget to check the oil dipstick - aka the talk page - but as they say, dont let me start... cheers JarrahTree 14:06, 30 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
It is a pity there isnt a very hard lined definite policy on exactly that... I always like to have 2 and can cope with 3 three where the subject topic and the projects fit well, but over that I get nervous in a sense... JarrahTree 14:15, 30 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
exactly - projects even if they belong in a set heirarchy do not necessarily equate to equanimity in weight either in authority relative to a subject of a category say, or of the collection of editors who may identify or associate with a particular subject/project - the dimensions to the issue are well beyond what I have ever encountered in the 'apprehensions' of supposed inactive/stalled projects as well. Hell I am using long words, I must get back to tagging before I exhaust the two cells. JarrahTree 14:23, 30 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Indeed have a safe weekend, not safe in australia due to storms (South australia) or australian football grand final, you are lucky to be not here JarrahTree 14:28, 30 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Invite to the African Destubathon

edit

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 55 African countries, so should be enjoyable! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African wildlife articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance. If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing any article related to a topic you often work on, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Might be a good way to work on fleshing out articles you've long been meaning to target and get rewarded for it! Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks.

Can you also send this to all WP:Football, WP:Athletics and WP:Olympics members:

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thankyou.

My watchlist is being flooded as you're spamming large numbers of Wikipedia's long-term trolls and vandals—could you at least consider removing the indefblocked users from your distribution list, since I see no benefit and plenty of potential drawbacks to your sending them these invitations, given that they'll reasonably infer from your invitation that their blocks have been lifted. ‑ Iridescent 16:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

About participating for Asia 10k Challenge

edit

Just want to say thank you for inviting me for this challenge. I live in the Philippines, particularly Cagayan de Oro, Region 10 and it really saddens me to see many stubs around my place. With some knowledge of Wikipedia and lots of pictures(I'm an amateur/enthusiast) and references by my side, hopefully I can contribute at least something for this one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nice Stranger5810 (talkcontribs) 11:37, 21 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

"German male painters"

edit

Dear Ser,

Thanks in general for your helpful editing. I wanted to query one particular item, namely replacing the category "German 18th century painters" with "German male painter". I'm not all that close to the field of art history but I have a pretty clear sense that century is an important descriptor in this field, since traditions of painting evolved so much over time. As for "male/female" -- well, maybe this is meant as a well-meaning gesture, but I also feel that highlighting this descriptor is a bit patronizing to the great female painters of the same era (such as Dora Stock). Thanks for listening. Opus33 (talk) 16:21, 21 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • If each edit was a character within an encyclopedia, it would be twice the size of Encyclopedia Brittanica.
  • If each edit was an article in its own language Wikipedia, the Wikipedia would be the fourth largest, in between the Cebuano and German versions.

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thankyou.

Watchlist

edit

I do hope you have received something like feedback either on wiki or off wiki as to the logistics of whether the current challenges are indeed something that will improve quality on wikipedia. I have just watched the messages go to friends talk pages on my watchlist. I know their edit patterns quite well, and I am concerned that the canvassing people who are already at their limit of time and energy are probably not even responding, either by feedback, or from the messages. There are some philosophical positions that situate 'volume' well down the scale compared to quality, to the point that some of the largest edit editors canvassing others with encouragement to diversity might backfire with general indifference larger than expected. We do what we can do as it is, real life for many comes first. I wish you challenge people could have thought of other ways to improve quality.JarrahTree 02:57, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Also canvassing eds who havent edited for over 6 months is as equally perplexing. The important things is not to take this response personally, obviously you mega edit folks enjoy this sort of thing with more AWB encouragement flowing, please just realise that there are other ways of looking at how things can stem the tide of reducing numbers of editors, edits and so on... Simply acknowledgement of what people can do or have done might in the end be all that is going to work...JarrahTree 03:04, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
the nature of volunteer communities is that you are likely to get the good positive responses from those who like the challenge and have the time and energy, and a deep silence from those who already have their time budget already proscribed by real life, work, family etc. Best of luck with your enthusiasts. Trust you get results JarrahTree 03:10, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

@JarrahTree: You say "I wish you challenge people could have thought of other ways to improve quality", do you honestly think that Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon isn't improving quality? Overall sending out mass invitations maximizes the chances of people who see potential in the idea getting involved than possible negative repurcussions of alerting old trolls and inactive editors etc. If Australia had 1200 articles destubbed in 3 weeks would you think that a bad thing Jarrah? It's very possible through something like this. To be able to run the most effective contests and produce big results on here you do need to challenge people and liven up editing. I wouldn argue that given how many active editors there are on wikipedia, we're grossly underachieving in terms of producing consistent, quality. The challenges and contests are intended as mechanism to improve general quality. Based on your outlook, Africa would see 1200 article improvements in 3 weeks anyway, as people are doing their thing. It just doesn't happen, not even 1/10th of that normally in terms of quality existing article improvements. Yes, people are busy and can't commit to multiple challenges, but I'm doing my best here to try to find a way to improve the encyclopedia beyond what I can commit myself. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:01, 7 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

High speed editing

edit

Ser Amantio di Nicolao, making massive high speed edits with AWB without a bot flag undesired. (Edits such as these). Additionally, this is specifically what the Special:MassMessage utility is designed for, it avoids flooding recent changes and provides informational rather than alert notifications for editors - additionally it respects editors wished that have opted out of mass messaging. Please review the available options for the next time you want to send out project invitations. — xaosflux Talk 17:25, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Generating association football positions from position-based stub tags

edit

as e.g. at Jimmy Cringan, Thomas Dunlop (footballer), John Duffy (footballer, born 1943). All these (and dozens of others on my watchlist) already had a position category, namely Category:Association football wing halves, which is a more specific subcat of Category:Association football midfielders. Are you sure it's necessary to automatically add the parent category as well? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:12, 7 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

When I first saw them coming through, I thought 'what a clever idea', assuming it was just picking up the ones that didn't already have a position category. Thanks for explaining. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:59, 7 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

edit

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Templates after categories

edit

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao, thanks for your contributions but in your recent editing it seems that you but the category Category:Association football defenders after the stub templates such as Category:American soccer defender stubs etc. From what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) but the templates should go after the stub for an easier read an access. In your recent edits hundreds of categories not have the stub template/category before that category you added, which makes it a bit confusing for people looking at the categories. I was coming to say I thought categorising as position missing was a good idea. I brought another example where the position wasn't missing: Laurent Blanc already in central defender cat. Hope you get it sorted. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:14, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Judging by my watchlist, the problematic ones are all Category:Association football defenders or subcats thereof. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:27, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

My two cents (saw it in Jorge Costa and Fernando Couto): if a player already has the category ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL GOALKEEPERS/DEFENDERS/MIDFIELDERS/FORWARDS, the "Association footballers not categorized by position" is overkill methinks, all those listed in the first instance are playing positions. Attentively --85.242.133.151 (talk) 15:38, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Why this edit when it's clearly categorised as Category:Association football defenders? I think you need to stop this AWB crusade.... Too many errors. I suggest you revert your recent edits as well. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:08, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reverting on that specific article, but you need to go back and fix all the others you've incorrectly tagged. It'll help with your edit count, after all. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:26, 18 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Awesome, a thousand more automated edits in a minute! Well done you! The Rambling Man (talk) 22:50, 19 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
It would actually be more productive for you to categorise these articles using AWB rather than simply tagging dozens per minute with "uncategorised" as you are currently doing. I guess edit counting is more important than enhancing the encyclopedia? The Rambling Man (talk) 07:05, 23 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Note, you need to change your AWB script, e.g. Jonny Hurst is not a footballer. He has a football-related biography, but doesn't need a position to be added because he didn't play football. You'll need to go back and fix all such instances of this mistake. Thanks! The Rambling Man (talk) 09:28, 23 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism detected on a page you edited

edit

Hi there. I am just a Wikipedia reader, have never made or edited a contribution, so I am reaching out to you as I have been unable to correct or report some vandalism I noticed on a page you had previously edited, in hopes you can address. I happened to view the page for Dule Hill page and from there clicked the link to his former wife's page (Nicky Lyn). There I saw 2 strange references , one to Turkish pornography and one to pedophila recruitment. I looked up some info in site vandalism but was unable to follow the Wikipedia instructions, presumably because I am not an established contributor/editor. But I see that you are, and that you had previously made appropriate edits to Ms. Lyn's page. The vandalizing edits were made 2 days ago by someone whose username has no profile page. My attempts to look for a revert feature or other "report" feature were unsuccessful, and my own edit attempt was directed to a version without the vandalism showing, but I think something should be done to clean up the page and warn the user (my own polite cease and desist message was was rejected as unauthorized). Can you help? Thank you! Cretek (talk) 15:32, 19 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

New 10,000 Challenge for Canada

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/The 10,000 Challenge is up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Canada like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Canada but fuelled by a contest such as The North America Destubathon to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. I would like some support from Canadian wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile! Cheers.

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

edit

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:57, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

In the article for Afro Poli, there is a section for Film-opera and also a Filmography. I don't see the Pagliacci film listed. Shouldn't it be there? Since I am ignorant about this, I didn't want to make any changes myself, but want to bring it to the attention of someone who knows. Thanks!

Proposed deletion of Samina (Liechtenstein)

edit

The article Samina (Liechtenstein) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I live in Liechtenstein, and I know that Samina isn't even a place. It's just the name of a major river that begins in Liechtenstein, but it's not a settlement. Further, the only source on the page links to a bus stop that could have been added to OpenStreetMaps by any editor, and the village is not recognized by the Liechtenstein government, not to mention nonexistent. If there's any evidence about it, please do reply.

– Fayenatic London 14:35, 2 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hillbilly's Discount in Oceana, WV

edit

I'm not exactly sure what the image of Hillbilly's Discount is trying to illustration, especially considering that it is an image of one of the ugliest buildings in town, the storefront was completely renovated, and it is no longer in business, so I removed it from the article Oceana, West Virginia. If you like to explain what you are attempting to illustrate, I could come up with a suitable replacement, such as Dixon's Hardware, the antique shop, one of the pharmacies, Uncle Tom's Loans, etc. —Farix (t | c) 04:06, 3 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • shrug* Seems more like a way to stereotype the local residents. But in my view, even free-use images should serve the purpose of illustrating a point from the article and not be for decorative purposes. —Farix (t | c) 14:07, 3 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I was unaware of that deleted article when I started a new Draft:James Corbett (journalist) on 19 May, 2016 that was rejected. I've been revising it here and there since. Recent events spurred me on (feel free to ask me or watch this video then read the TCR comments section (not the YouTube comments) for the full disclosure of my involvement: https://www.corbettreport.com/what-i-learned-from-the-propornot-propaganda-list/ ). I discovered the deleted article and folded it into the new draft. Feel free to contribute as you like. ~ JasonCarswell (talk) 22:17, 3 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Why did you add blank sections to Matthew Steen page?

edit

Not sure why blank categories were needed here. Is there a reason why you added them?

Overcategorization?

edit

Hi. Thanks to my watchlist I saw that today you have re-categorized hundreds of articles about Moldovan politicians [6], adding additional parent categories like 20th-century Moldovan politicians and 21st-century Moldovan politicians to articles, even if they had already more specific categories, like Moldovan MPs 1998–2001, Moldovan MPs 2005–09, or Moldovan MPs 2009–10, which are subcategories for the previously-named 20th-century Moldovan politicians and 21st-century Moldovan politicians. Isn't this in fact an overcategorization? XXN, 21:36, 20 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Jian-Hua Zhuang

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Jian-Hua Zhuang requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Project tagging

edit

Hey Ser -- you added a bunch of unassessed project tags for WikiProject Equine to about 90 articles. I can guarantee you they are all "importance=low" and most all will be "class=start". You have some sort of tool to do these quickly and I do not, so would you kindly assess everything here so I don't have to do it all by hand? Thanks! Ser Amantio di Nicolao,

Merry Christmas!

I am responding to your enquiry regarding why I undid your revision on the Congressman Steve Rothman page.

My journalistic experience has been that biographical information and historical documents, which are the property of the U.S. Government and the City of Englewood, New Jersey, must be appropriately sourced.

All the very best,

Clock chimes!

edit

Hey there! Merry Christmas. (:

I have something to share, and a question about it! Just this morning, while talking with my dad about the Westminster quarters, I realized there was no article about the concept of clock chimes in general. So I created it. Would welcome your contributions! Seems there are a number of books on the subject but not many accessible via Google.

I do have a question about the page, though. I initially created it as "clock chimes" before realizing that well, probably singular is best. So I changed it to "clock chime". But now I'm having second thoughts - many chimes are referred to as "chimes" even when only one of them is being discussed; i.e. the Westminster chimes or the Whittington chimes. It is kind of a collective noun. Any thoughts about whether "clock chime" or "clock chimes" is best?

--Vivisel (talk) 18:42, 26 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, maybe I pulled the trigger a bit quickly on the name change. The process of adding more citations may help me decide too - I'll check back in later today or tomorrow. If you have further thoughts, please let me know! Vivisel (talk) 18:57, 26 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
I saw some of those- OK sources but not great. I found a couple of bibliographies online, which have some great non-google-books-able sources; I put them in the talk page. I may try to drop by a library... Vivisel (talk) 23:20, 26 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Riaria‎

edit

The article Riaria‎ has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

--Enzino (talk) 00:34, 29 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)

edit

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact L235 if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 05:19, 30 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
