Hello, Shanghai88, and thank you for your contributions!

I wanted to let you know it seems an article you worked on, Edward Loughlin O'Malley, is copied from another Wikipedia page, Edward Louchlin O'Malley. It's fine to do this as long as you provide the following information in the edit summary:

  1. a link to the article you copied from
  2. the date you copied it

You can do this now by editing the page, making any minor edit to the article, and adding the above information into the edit summary.

If you're still not sure how to fix the problem, please leave a message at the help desk. It's possible that I made a mistake, so feel free to remove the tag I placed on the article.

Thanks again for helping build the free encyclopedia! MadmanBot (talk) 10:06, 2 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Joseph Kemp

edit

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Joseph Kemp a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Orphaned non-free media (File:Jeremy Fell Mathews, AG of Hong Kong.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Jeremy Fell Mathews, AG of Hong Kong.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 23:47, 24 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Replaceable fair use File:Sir Ti-Liang Yang.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Sir Ti-Liang Yang.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:00, 25 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited International College Hong Kong, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Luk Keng (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

References with bare URLs

edit

Hello, Shanghai88. I noticed that you updated my old list of bare URL references at User:Gronk Oz/Bare URLs. I am planning to delete that page because it was created in 2015 so it is so far out of date that it seems to be wrong more often than it is right. If you want it kept for any reason please let me know; otherwise I will get rid of it.--Gronk Oz (talk) 13:59, 2 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Photo of the Wilders

edit

Hi! I left a note on the Isabel Wilder talk page about the identities of the children in the photograph you've added there and updated on others of the Wilders' pages. In short, I wonder whether you have good reason to doubt the data available on the photo's page at Beinecke, which indicates that the photograph is of Amos with his three eldest children—Amos, Thornton, and Charlotte. If the date of 1900 is correct, it hardly seems possible that Isabel is portrayed; wouldn't you agree? Let me know what you think so we can sort this out. Thanks, Swper (talk) 14:16, 17 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your post responding to my question. Let's keep the conversation here so it's all in one place. My main question is this: is it safe for us to assume that the two children in skirts are both girls? Of course it's possible that you are correct—that the photo is from late 1900 (or perhaps mis-dated and from 1901 or so) and shows Isabel, Charlotte, and Thornton. But it also seems possible to me that young Thornton is in a dress. A different photo from the same collection seems to show three Wilder children, with the oldest (who I think must be a boy, perhaps Thornton) in a dress, though I can't definitively identify them. In late nineteenth-century America, boys often wore dresses until they were old enough for breeching—see, for a prominent example, this photograph of Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1884. Given this context, I think it is safest if we defer to the current data on the photo, which indicates that it portrays Amos N., Thornton, and Charlotte. If we would like another photograph of Isabel for her page, perhaps we can look into the copyright status of other images in the Beinecke's collection, such as this one. Let me know what you think about this proposal. Swper (talk) 14:58, 18 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
