Kohl Automobile article question on help desk

edit

Hello, Silver22553. You have new messages at Wikipedia:Help_desk.

Hi Silver22553,

I'm curious about your latest addition to the article (which I tidied up slightly, to fit in with how Wikipedia articles look).

You state: After the fire destroyed the building, Frank F. Matheson and Charles W. Matheson (of Matheson Automobile) obtained the staff and the surviving manufacturing equipment from Kohl Automobile. They relocated the business from Holyoke, Massachusetts to a neighborhood town of Forty Fort, Pennsylvania., and give as a reference the "Hagley Digital Archives Brief History of Matheson Automobile Company" (Hagley Digital Archives. Hagley Museum and Library, Delaware, USA. http://digital.hagley.org/custom/mathesonauto.php).

The website does not mention the Kohl business at all - so I'm curious as to where the link between Kohl and Matheson came from?

I have left mention about the car at WikiProject Automobiles, and amongst the responses was The only Kohl mentioned in the comprehensive Beaulieu Encyclopedia (it runs to 1800 pages) was made in Cleveland, Ohio between 1900 and 1902 by an Edward Kohl. The company was registered as Kohl & Gates. They then moved to Whitney Point, New York as the Kohl Automobile Co for a year, made no more cars and vanished. At least 12 cars were made, all in Cleveland with single cylinder engines. When I asked the poster of that about adding a reference to this in the article, they replied I would do if I was certain that it is the same company. All the locations are different as is the company name. There is no mention of a fire in the Beaulieu Encyclopedia (yes I have a copy).

It might be useful if you could respond at that page - I know nothing about Kohl, Matheson, or indeed cars (well, apart from "They usually have 4 wheels, etc etc"!).

I hope you can provide information on the link between the two companies. If you have reliable sources of information, I would be quite happy to help you develop this article.

As I say, it might be an idea to contribute to the discussion at WikiProject Automobiles as linked to above - the folks there are experts in automobiles, so they'd be a lot more help than I would - but I would be willing to help as much as I can, even if it was just in helping to tidy up the article!

Thank you Steve for all your help. My name is Howard. My last info comes from George Walsh's papers. George was my Grandfather and I now have his papers - a steamer chest full of records. They all need help - just to be read. I have a friend who is using his company's software to bring then alive.
George worked for Kohl and helped move the equipment and became the head wrench turner for Matheson Automobile. As the software slowly brings these things into allmost readable, I've discovered the orginal blue prints for the Run About and can see some things like the size of the main bearings and have determine the basic shape and size of the runabout. I'm hoping to get enough detail to build a full size replica. I also have a few passages now readable on how they built the Matheson engines. They actually took a 5 foot long bar, placed it thru the piston and ground the piston into the block. I also now know that they built over 100 runabout. I'm hoping to get one of the many pictures capable of being printed
Bottom line, This is quite a look into the world of "How it was back in the day" His records describe the work day pland, the hours, the beer lunches and production requirements. However, I'm beginning to think this article will be deleted before I have enough info. I'd like to get it all on the web before I too become history. Hi Howard. First all, I have moved your response so that it is below my initial query! I have also indented it (use 1 colon : to indent one level - for this response, I am using 2 colons :: to indent it 2 levels).
Another hint: if a paragraph begins with a space, it will be put in a box (unless there are colons at the start of the line):
An example of a line beginning with a space.
Back to the matter in hand! I have put a "under construction" tag onto the article page, so while I am looking forou further sources, it should hopefully be safe from deletion!
I am looking for written sources of information - today, I looked in my local library (in Norbury), but that is only a branch library, and had nothing suitable. On Thursday, I'll try to pop down to the main library in Croydon and see if they have some information.
Your notes should help expand the article, but I do not think they would be counted as reliable in the sense demanded by Wikipedia. That is why I am trying to find information elsewhere... the internet hasn't yielded anything yet (although I'm going to keep looking), but hopefully books will! If I have no success in Croydon, I might pop down to the British Library next week.
If anyone tries to Propose for Deletion the article (or PROD as we call it!), then I will contest that - but the under construction tag should prevent that from happening for at least a week.
Anyway, I thought I'd update you with what I'm up to - we'll do everything we can to make this a well-sources article! Regards, -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 12:34, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
My God Steve, you are the man :-) I again thank you for your help. However, I do have some interesting News!! "Hemmings" contacted me last week and visited me this morning. They are very interested in my papers, they have a few contacts they state can fuly restore my papers and I have agreed to let then process two of the Runabouts assembly drawnings. They are also interested in the publishing rights and want me to drop my effords here. I'm inclined to go along with them, but will hold judgement until I see the results of their efforts. I'm feeling rather good about this.
Well, that is good! However, I will still look in Croydon for references. If I can find them, then they can be used for the article - we don't have to use your materials! If I can;t find anything, then we can just leave the article as is, and if it ends up getting deleted, no one is harmed - if it doesn't no one is still harmed! Chat soon -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 14:03, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, I looked in Croydon - and didn't find a single mention in any of the books I looked at! Oh well! I won't be doing any more research on the company or car. I hope all goes well with Hemmings. Regards, -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 20:53, 27 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. The recent edit you made to the page Kohl Automobile has been reverted, as it appears to be unconstructive. Use the sandbox for testing; if you believe the edit was constructive, please ensure that you provide an informative edit summary. You may also wish to read the introduction to editing. Thank you. Further to the above message from Storm Rider, as the article is there, and there are sources, and it has been edited by more editors (i.e. me) than just the creator (yourself), it is not permissible to just blank it.
I have removed the bit in the article about Mathesons, as nothing I found in my research confirmed this information - and the folks at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Automobiles couldn't either. I have now proposed it for deletion, as there are no indication of its notability. If you want to support this, below the line that reads <!-- Do not use the "dated prod" template directly; the above line is generated by "subst:prod|reason" -->, add {{prod2}} to show that you support the proposal for deletion. (if you want to add your own comment, you can add {{prod2|comment}} instead). -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 09:03, 5 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Steve, Thanks for your help. Hemmings did come thru. later I gave them all my material and with a few exceptions it is now like new. The drawings are enough to replicate the car - maybe my next project. I was apparently wrong on a few items. It was Frederick Kohl, not his son who started all of this. My Grandfather - George Walsh - was the "straw boss" & chief engineer. Mathison did buy out the equipment - but not the name I have the contract. I'm quite ready for the powers to be to delete all this and I will let my grand kids handle it in 20 years. I also now have "readable" letters. The context of which would make a great movie. Anyway thank you sir for your interest. If nothing else, it created a interest from someone who had known about Kohl and his runabout. Their help, like yours, made all of this quite productive - even profitable. ~~
I'm glad it's all going well! It was a pleasure doing what I could to help. If I had been able to find sources of information, then I would not have put the article up for deletion - but as I couldn't, I am quite happy for it to be deleted - perhaps in the future, there will be sources which will enable it to be recreated! I hope you will consider still editing on wikipedia (both adding to other articles, and who knows, maybe creating other new articles) - and if you do, feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. Proposed deletion of Kohl Automobile

edit

The article Kohl Automobile has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable car/company, with no sources found (see Talk Page)

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 09:06, 5 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
