Datamonitor

Hi Soumyasch

I was wondering if you could help me with a problem i am having with an article for Datamonitor plc. I notice that on the 10th June you deleted the Datamonitor page and i was just wondering if you could tell me why?

Last year we tried to add a page for Datamonitor and it was deleted as the adminstrators felt the text was not suitable. We did not argue this and the page was deleted. However i then noticed that some content was restored and had been added to, and this page was added by an independent person with nothing to do with Datamonitor. Therefore the page was not added as a form of advertising, as was implied previously when i myself added content, so i am at a loss as to why it has now been taken down?

If you could shed any light on this for me it would be much appreciated. It seems slightly crazy to me that pages for companies that we own, such as Verdict research and Ovum, are allowed yet a page for Datamonitor is not. We are most definitely a notible company and provide research that is often quoted and sited, and i am sure people would be interested to know the history of the copmany from which the research comes.

Windows Live Drive

Definitely agree that both should be mentioned in the article. Personally I don't know which one is true because one side is coming from an official Microsoft employee, and the other side is from a quite reliable source for internal Windows Live news (I'm pretty sure some of LiveSide's staff are actually Microsoft employees too). I don't remember the exact content of this article and I can't check it anymore but I don't think it was just based on 'one appearance in a TV show' as than hopefully I should have tagged it for deletion myself (although I agree that its notability is debatable as far as I remember). My main point (IMHO) is that if an article exists for some time during which other editors have edited it and didn't add a delete tag it most likely should deserve an AfD and not a sd just based on the opinion of one editor who can do a sd. Of course there will be many such articles which will be deleted anyway after a discussion but I think Wikipedia should be able to exists with such 'borderline' articles until either the article is improved or the discussion is over. So yes I would appreciate it if you could please restore the article so that I can have a look and maybe add something and than you are of course welcome to start an AfD if you think it's NN. I hope I am not responding incorrectly- please forgive me if I am, I can't figure out the talk thing correctly, I am just trying to respond to a message left by you to me from yesterday.

You chose to delete all of my contributions to the keyword amber, but I am not sure why. The message I read really seemed like a vague catch all without consideration for each of the links individually.

Each of those links was legitimate. The International Amber Association is the world's primary & foremost amber organization, composed of researchers, scholars, amber jewelry factories, studios, artisans, & experts, not to mention being a non-profit entity. Why would you delete that link in a wiki with the subject "amber"? Are you familiar with this organization or even know what it is, did you visit the page & read about them?

Nova, Jewel of the Earth is a link to interactive documentary pages - why would you delete that? Every link you deleted was not only thoughtful but an actual contribution to help this very weak amber page evolve- a page which is asking for outside expert help, is it not? How are the articles for the Amber Reading Room inappropriate?

I really do not understand the reasoning used to reject these links. Can you help me understand this, because I have been involved in the amber trade for ten years and I find wikipedia's amber linkage quite pathetic. It doesn't even categorize properly. Amber has amazing history, cultural & scientific value as well as a rich history of jewelry & art forms & this page is seriously underdeveloped. Doug Lundberg frmo AmbericaWest, for example, innovated an important amber listserv many years ago.

If you could clarify the philosophy behind rejecting links focused on the cultural, historic & current amber jewelry industry - which employes more than 10,000 people in Pomerania - I would be grateful, or perhaps you could help me figure out a category that would be acceptable. ?

i.e. Should I start a page about the International Amber Association since Wikipedia has deemed there is no legitimate connection between the two?

Hi Soumyasch, I understand your reasoning somewhat on limiting the amount of countries where the single charted, but it doesn't seem necessary as other singles often list where the single charted within the top 100 or the top 20. I have no intention of adding its charting in Sweden (#52) but listing the countries where it was in the top 20 would be useful for users that only give a quick glance as it shows the popularity of the song, which is something few French songs have done. Personally I think that a fourth charting in the infobox wouldn't be too cluttering, especially if it is a top 10 one, I will go about making the box for the full list. Lolita doesn't appear to have charted in Japan but I'll refrain from cutting it if you have a source. Peter and The Wolf (film)

Hi,

You deleted the page "Peter and The Wolf (film) today at 09:03 because it had no content. You were quite right, as it did have no content at that time. However, yesterday when I last edited it at around 15:00 it did have lots of content. I cannot find any record of the page being removed before you removed it for no content in the deletion logs, therefore I think either it has not been loged or somebody has for some reason deleted all of the content. Is there any way to restore this previous version of the page?

RE: SVG

To add a shadow to Image:NGSCB.svg you should make a copy of the object to be shadowed (in this cases the boxes which look like rounded rectangles), then scale it so it is slightly larger than the original. You may want to move the shadow for effect. Then set the colour to black and the transparancy to about 30. Finally, send the shadow behind the original object. That's your basic shadow. I hope this helps. You could also consider blurring the shadow, but this can cause problem's with MediaWiki's rendering of SVGs.

I noticed that the various boxes have a gradient to them, and that the gradients blend to transparent. Is this intentional? (Inkscape renders transparent as white, I think).

Also, you might consider putting the {{Inkscape}} template on the image page.

Hi Soumyasch, I just noticed you deleted the page of the Funambol open source project. I am fine with blatant advertising of companies, but open source project should be treated differently. We have one million downloads of the software and the largest community in open source. Can you just delete MySQL, SugarCRM, JBoss and any other open source project for me? I would appreciate not being treated differently than anyone else.

Deleted MOSS User Group link?

Greetings, The link to SharePoint User Groups around the world on the SharePoint Server v3 page has been deleted, yet links to 2 random blog postings in the same section on the same page, that by the way throw 404 errors are left in tact. Please provide a reason. International Republican Institute Vandalism

Hi Soumyasch. Not sure if you recall, but you helped respond to creeping vandalism of the IRI page on June 24 with a partial ban on edits by IP addresses. Well the ban expired on 10 July and the vandalism was repeated on the 12th, this time by an new user account set up for the purpose (User:Democracy activist). Care to help? You backed out some recent edits in the cable modem page, specifically you deleted the text:

From a network topology perspective, a cable modem is, strictly speaking, a network bridge that conforms to IEEE 802.1D for Ethernet networking (with some modifications). The cable modem bridges Ethernet frames between a customer LAN and the coax cable network.

With respect to the OSI model, a cable modem is thus a data link layer (or layer 2) forwarder, rather than simply a modem.

Could you provide some justification? I believe the text was accurate and met the three core content policies.

Windows screenshots

IMO, what Windows users see everyday forms the identity of Windows, and they don't stare at empty desktops for much time.

All the windows in my screenshots were of applications that are part of Windows, because I've been trying to present a screenshot of "entire Windows", not just "Windows desktop" or "Windows shell". Thanks for the kind words, but it's actually another thing that's depressing: that anyone may orphan a screenshot and let it be speedily and tracelessly deleted, leaving absolutely no attribution to the original uploader. This doesn't agree well with the all-revisions-preserving spirit of GFDL in my eyes, but that might be just me.

When I joined Wikipedia in 2005, the fair-use policy was much more lax. We were allowed to use non-free content on talk pages, user pages, in galleries, etc. I had uploaded a host of images, perfectly acceptable at the time of their upload, and then had to cease editing for a few months. Hey, do you think a screenshot of a search folder is needed in the article to visually demonstrate the feature? I, for one, dont think its necessary for it does not visually look any different than real ones. But some have pointed out without a screenshot it does not give an exact idea how the UI is surfaced. Please do not replace the <code> tag with <source> in Wikipedia articles unless you are very sure that you know what you're doing. <source> has many bugs and infelicities at the moment. Maybe someday it will be usable on Wikipedia, but not yet. For more information, see MediaWiki talk:Geshi.css.

Until <source> is usable, the proper method of including code on Wikipedia is to use <code>, optionally with the (currently ignored) lang= parameter. Explanation for Deletion (Windows Media Audio)

Hello. I noticed that you have deleted my last entry on the Windows Media Audio article. Specifically the following:

"One online store that sells music using this codec is MusicGiants."

The above quote was for informational purposes, that it is being used for online music distribution, just like WMA (Standard), which is not common knowledge. I can see you may have misinterpreted the sentence as an advertisement. If you refer to the Digital Rights Management section of the article:

"The PlaysForSure DRM technology supports time-limited subscription music such as those offered by unlimited download services, such as MTV's URGE, Napster, Rhapsody, Yahoo! Music Unlimited and Virgin Digital."

You will see that not one, but several businesses are listed for the purposes of reference. Not that I am bothered by your deletion but please don't take my good will as "ad spam". :]

Thanks for understanding my intent. : ) I must admit I have used the wrong way to reference this "fact" by using an external link to the store rather than an article about its existence, which I am regretful about.

Like you said, sometimes it is a little difficult for me to type something that is totally not based on your experience or observation, even if it is one that you are very sure about. For example you have pointed out the "only a few stores ..." quote of mine. Even though there are strong reasons to believe so (by researching on the Internet), up to the point where it can even be considered a fact, I guess there's just this element of subjectivity. I have a lot to learn, and thanks for pointing that out! : )

Office 2007

I removed the link you added to the article to the Office 2008 for Mac article. I do not see the relevance of linking that article from one that is completely a version for Windows? Obviously links to office2k8 from the main Microsoft Office article would make sense since that article addresses both Mac and Windows versions of Office, however Office 2007 is Windows only and again I do not see how the next Mac version plays into it. W3C Recommendation vs. Standard (Internet Explorer)

You made a comment when undo'ing a change back in June that W3C Recommendation is not a Standard. I don't think this is accurate. W3C Recommendation is the W3C's highest imprint, and thus qualifies as a Standard by any rational definition. The term "Recommendation" was a political accomodation that W3C makes in its charter. Note that IETF and other de facto standards organizations do not have per se legal standard body status. That is, they are not per se recognized by international trade groups, which are de jure bodies.

If you believe otherwise, then I am sad to report that there is no such thing as a Standard for the web, as neither ISO, ANSI, ECMA, or any other formal body has ratified any of the HTML, XML, CSS, HTTP, etc specificiations. In other words, W3C Recommendation is the highest status today.

This is important to keep clear as a means of keeping the energy around this civil and useful. It's appropriate that the page keep a good record of how Microsoft does and doesn't support standards, but we need to be as accurate as possible. As you do spend time cleaning up the IE pages I thought I would flag this.

Hey I need some help with choosing a license on this image. I sent e-mails to 2 people about this image and according to Matt Dellinger "I got the image from HNTB, who designed the bridge", and according to John Weeks "The images were produced as part of the design process, so I assume that they are government images and thus available for reuse." I would guess that this image was also done by HNTB, so I used the license on that page. Tell me if I'm correct. Thanks in advance. - Chetblong^{talk to me} 20:50, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
