Hey, greetings! Good to see you around -- and thanks for the comment/revert. Yeah, that's some kid who has been harassing me for slightly over a year now. It's a strange case since it's just silly low-level vandalism he does but he comes back at irregular intervals of days to weeks, like he can't let go of it. Dunno what his problem is, but he's not the shiniest penny in the tip jar. Antandrus (talk) 14:55, 15 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey, I was wondering where you had been!
Well, I've moved since the nostalgia days…but that's about all that's newsworthy except for the fact that nothing else very newsworthy happened! :P How are you? —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  03:51 18 September, 2009 (UTC)

Hey!

Thanks for the reply! :-) Where did you move to? I am doing alright. Attending my final year of college and playing bass in a metal band. :-) So, things have been pretty ok. Hows the new place? What made you move anyway? :-P Jayant,20 Years, Indiacontribs 05:39, 23 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, I moved to Sacramento, which is about seventy miles or so south of where I lived before (that's a straight line, though; it's considerably longer on the road). I got a job as a bus driver, and it took about twice driving all the way down and all the way back up before I realised that it was not going to work. :P I moved into a slightly larger house, which means I didn't have to worry about what to keep and what not to keep, but the move itself was just hell. Needless to say that, among other incidences, I started the move with movers and ended it without them, moving stuff myself. ;) —  $PЯINGεrαgђ  00:35 24 September, 2009 (UTC)

Sacramento! Thats nice! :-) And yeah, moving can be a real pain! I get tied up just moving my computer from one desk to another! Hows your "wikipedian" life going on? :-P Jayant,20 Years, Indiacontribs 17:27, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Not a bad place to be, Springeragh! Big town with a lot going on, and you're close to the mountains. I had an ancestor who made a fortune there in the gold fields -- not by panning for gold, but by running a river ferry service taking miners to prostitutes in town. Moving is a pain, I know -- when I was a student I used to do it myself, but now if I need to do it I hire gorillas. Good to see you around again! Antandrus (talk) 15:59, 26 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey, no problem, considering how funny my edit count over the past year looks >_> I realized I had missed a LOT, though, like that whole messy WP:APCD RFC and whatnot. I guess I sorta miss that **laughs hysterically** --tennisman 12:38, 15 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Edward Elgar's Enigma Solution - (Pi solution is confirmed by Elgar's 1929 notes.

edit

In July 2007, I offered the Pi solution in Wikipedia but was redacted because it was original research. Since that time I have done additional research and it is currently being edited for publication by the journal of Current Musicology (Columbia University). When I first wrote about Pi in 2007 you seemed to understand why it had some merit. Since that time, I found a great "jape" about Pi occurred the year before Elgar wrote the Enigma Variations. The Indiana Pi Bill of 1897 was a foolish attempt to legislate the method to use for calculating Pi. The bill was passed by the House but tabled by the Senate after a mathematician explained the absurdity of the idea. Elgar would have loved such a story. Anyway, that aside, it is likely he was playing around with Pi to see if he could use it to create a useful melody. As you remember the first four notes are scale degree 3-1-4-2 which is decimal Pi. Fractional Pi is 22/7 and this is harder to find but it is contained in the first four bars.

In 1929, Elgar was 72 yrs old and in ill health. His wife Alice and good friend August Jaeger had already died. No one had solved his Enigma. He was determined not to divulge the solution but he probably wanted to leave some way for the world to confirm the solution when it was found, hence he wrote three sentences with the issuance of his pianola rolls in 1929. The three sentences contain three separate hints at fractional Pi (22/7). In the first sentence, he talked about 2 crotchets and 2 quavers- a hint at 22 (of 22/7). In the third sentence he referred to bar 7- a hint at /7 (of 22/7). In the second sentence he stated that the drop of the seventh in the 3rd and 4th bar should be observed. These two sevenths (2/7) come exactly after the first 11 notes. 11 x 2/7 = 22/7. Could this possibly be a coincidence in a piece that starts with scale degree 3-1-4-2?

I thought you might appreciate the updated information. I am planning on adding the Pi theory after it is published, hopefully in the next journal.

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
