List of lost films

Please don't add films unless you have a WP:reliable source to back them up. I'm not finding much except Arne Andersen's list, and I don't think that qualifies as a solid reference. Clarityfiend (talk) 00:21, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

IMDb trivia is not considered a reliable source - very, very far from it. See WP:USERGENERATED. All those references have to go. Clarityfiend (talk) 21:15, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Silentera's information is also no better a source than TCM. As you can see from the following page http://www.silentera.com/info/contributors.html the contributors to silentera are musicians and silent movie fans. They have no credentials to speak with authority on silent films. The highest degree these people hold are a Bachelor's Degree which hardly qualifies them as an authority. If you check the source they quote, none of them, except for imdb, state that a film is believed to be lost. They are general references to common facts about the films such as cast, director, plot, etc. At least TCM owns the right and copyright to most of these lost films so the fact they considered a film to be lost is hardly trivial. They have considerable interest in finding these films, so if they have any information about a film being discovered they will reveal it if for nothing more than to make a profit. According to TCM any user contributions will be distinctly marked so: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/contribute/?id=5770&src=title&date=1929&name=The-Argyle-Case "You will receive online recognition for any posted contribution based on the personal info you submit." In the pages I referenced there was no such recognition. The material was supplied solely by TCM. Furthermore, if you look at the bottom of the pages you will note than TCM has used the following reference work in composing their movie files: "LEONARD MALTIN CLASSIC MOVIE GUIDE, COPYRIGHT 2013. USED BY ARRANGEMENT WITH PENGUIN GROUP (USA) INC."Talkicolor (talk) 03:08, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

As I've stated ad nauseum, silentera is recognized by the professionals of a notable film archive as reliable. Can TCM claim the same? Your TCM suppositions are WP:OR. You need to read and understand WP:reliable sources. It's not about what we guess or surmise, it's what recognized authorities accept.

As for your other points, the list of names to which you refer is merely people that silentera wishes to thank for their featured "writings"; nowhere is it stated or even implied that they are the sole or even primary contributors. Examining the list, how is Greta de Groat (whom I have cited for a number of Pauline Frederick films) not qualified? She's the "Electronic Media Cataloger at Stanford University Libraries". The Kaufman Agency deals in film music.

Nor is having nothing more than a bachelors degree some sort of automatic disqualification. Roger Ebert, by your "reasoning", must be a fraud. That charlatan Gene Siskel only had a bachelors in (shudder) philosophy, albeit from Yale. Pauline Kael dropped out of Berkeley without a degree. Clarityfiend (talk) 01:58, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Silentera is a joke. Every time I use it, I find numerous errors. I don't know why I bother because you don't seem to care about any evidence but I just checked the film Careers from 1929. http://www.silentera.com/PSFL/data/C/Careers1929.html silentera calls this all-talking feature, a "silent film, with sound sequences" but check the words right before that "Billie's first talkie" so they contradict themselves. At the bottom the keywords state:"Synchronized sound film". So the people at silentera think that the film "Careers" is an all-talking picture, a part-talking picture, and a sound film with a Synchronized Score all at the same time (and yes there is a difference). Now look at the "sources" they use. One of them, a biography of Thelma Todd, they state has "Questionable accuracy" yet they are using it as a source. http://www.silentera.com/PSFL/bibliography/Edmonds-Todd.html The other is biography of thirty male stars. These hardly sound like reference material. Going back to the page for "Careers", the people at silentera don't even know if this important film is a feature (not the question marks), if it is a drama. But of course, this doesn't matter to you because the people (or should I say Gods?) at silentera can do no wrong. I have to wonder if you aren't connected to the site yourself. Please address the fact that the site is riddled with errors and questionable sources. If you are only going to reply about how silentera is "recognized by the professionals" again, then please don't bother. If these "professionals" jump off a bridge, I know I won't be following them.
