Once again, the real world gets in the way. Time very limited.

If I leave you a message at your talk page or at the talk of an article, I have it watchlisted and will look for replies there. No need to leave talkback messages here, but using the talkback function on those pages is appreciated and encouraged.

Furthermore, if you're coming here to talk to me about a content dispute, your best bet is to raise it at the talk page of the article(s) in question. If you leave a message pertaining directly to a content dispute, I am likely to simply tell you to bring it to talk anyway, so let's both save a step. Please join the discussion on Talk:Glengarry Glen Ross (film)

edit

Hello, I am soliciting comments for an RfC that is currently open on the "Glengarry Glen Ross (film)" page. There is disagreement about where the film was set (New York vs. Chicago).

One of the issues is whether it is original research to cite to elements in the film itself (including props, dialogue, and a statement in the end credits that it was "filmed on location in New York City") to establish setting.

Response so far in the RfC has been mixed. Comments welcome! Xanthis (talk) 14:06, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Topic ban

here, you are indefinitely topic banned from all edits and discussion regarding User:MarkBernstein. You are also restricted from opening and noticeboard discussions or enforcement requests related to MarkBernstein without the permission of an uninvolved administrator. Consider this a final warning, with the hopes than another administrator will see it, and consider not pushing the block button. Now: You were informed by an admin. at 16:59 on 13 March that you were restricted from opening notice board discussions. At 18:36, less than 2 hours later you opened a thread here. Gamaliel had plenty of support in his closure. What admin. told you it was ok to open that thread? Perhaps you did get caught in the wrong place, at the wrong time - but what made you think that going right back to that board and opening a new thread was a good idea? I'll be blunt Thargor: I had two tabs open when I saw that. 1-the block button. 2-this talk page. I chose the later due to my excessive WP:AGF nature. Please think long and hard before you continue on this path. Go edit articles.Ched :  ?  19:59, 13 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

addendum Come to me in a couple months, and I'll be happy to take an appeal to the board. — Ched :  ?  20:05, 13 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
That's not what the topic ban is about, sorry. My topic ban is that I'm "restricted from opening and noticeboard discussions or enforcement requests related to MarkBernstein." This appeal is related to me. Furthermore, WP:BANEX allows me to appeal my topic ban, which I have done. All of this is explained in my appeal, which I respectfully ask you to read carefully. I do not need an administrator to allow me to appeal a topic ban, although I appreciate your future offer (although your assistance today would be much more helpful). So please actually look at the merits of the case as opposed to simply being deferential. Thargor Orlando (talk) 20:06, 13 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thargor, a lot of editing involving some of the recent ideological topics have been very personal and I think it makes it feel like pride is at stake. However, you ought to realize a bunch of people are doing the "sad clown act". You know, where a clown in sad makeup comes out and then slips on a pie for the audience. Normally you're supposed to laugh, but sometimes the clown overplays it and you wind up feeling sorry for the actor, in which case the act becomes uneasy. A lot of Wikipedia's sad clowns are hugely overplaying how sad it is to have pie on their butts - I mean, they're quoting Shakespeare at an encyclopedia article about moral panic in video gaming culture. It's Drama with a capital 'D'. I understand not wanting to have the black mark of a ban on your account, but honestly, what long term plan is there to having it lifted? If you fall in a pie, let the world laugh at your misery then get up and go to the next act - otherwise people get tired and start to boo you off stage.
The tone being directed at you by this admin here is obnoxiously authoritative, but truthfully it's not a battle worth fighting, you know? Not unless you've got some kind of strategy in mind that requires you to be able to interact with this user or bring them to arbitration. YellowSandals (talk) 20:27, 13 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I'll just acknowledge this and leave it at that for now. Thanks for the concern. Thargor Orlando (talk) 20:29, 13 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) Well - you and DHeyward do as you feel you must. I assume that the final solution (and the original thread has not even been closed yet) is meant to read: "restricted from opening and participating in noticeboard discussions or enforcement requests related to MarkBernstein." Why is that such an unacceptable thing? MB is not only under the very same restriction, but also restricted via the DS ruling that he avoid Gamergate/Campus rape". What is so difficult and restricting about avoiding MB? Hey - you folks do as you feel you must, but don't be surprised if there's a block right around the corner if you keep at it as you are now. I'll be off-line for a bit now, but best of luck. — Ched :  ?  20:37, 13 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ched (talk · contribs) why it's unacceptable is listed in my appeal. If someone blocks me for appealing my topic ban, that's a bigger problem to deal with, but your questions are exactly why the topic ban is untenable. Thargor Orlando (talk) 20:42, 13 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I will amend the wording of the topic ban to read "participating" in since that's what I meant to say. However, opening this is perfectly acceptable since appeals of a topic ban are allowed. Gamaliel (talk) 21:28, 13 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Apology

edit

I've struck the above warning which I posted. I misunderstood the intent of the findings at WP:AE, and I was wrong. I could go on about honestly wanting to get a "warning" there to prevent a "block", but I could understand if all of it would ring hollow to you. You are of course completely free to remove the entire thread from your talk, but given that others have also commented here I don't think I should remove it myself.

I appreciate you doing so. No sweat off my back, I understand as well as anyone how frustratingly irritating this entire debacle is. Thargor Orlando (talk) 13:59, 14 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

And if you'd care to, please explain why I would want to participate in an area where I'm insulted, have my integrity called into question, and get called "obnoxious". Also: Just an FYI - Wiki is not my job - and if I choose to not continue to participate at a certain page or area - then I don't see a single policy that compels me to do so. And that's provided that I'm even able to get up and get on my computer. Further on my opting "not to come back": It's often my approach to state my position on a situation, (be it AE, RfA, AfD, or whatever) and simply allow Wikipedia:Consensus to develop without repeating myself ad infinitum; or allowing myself to be drawn into a vortex of tenacious debate. — Ched :  ?  13:52, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Modification of restrictions

edit

A few fellow administrators have objected to the way HJ Mitchell and I have dealt with the recent dispute between DHeyward and MarkBernstein. As a result, I am lifting the restriction on all of you opening enforcement requests against each other, so other administrators can bring a fresh perspective to this long-lasting dispute. The topic ban on discussing one another otherwise remains in place. Please bring any requests or disputes regarding each other or Gamergate to WP:AE and not to my talk page or my inbox. Thank you. ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Signpost exit poll

edit

Dear Wikipedian, you recently voted in the ArbCom election. Your username, along with around 155 other usernames of your fellow Wikipedians, was randomly selected from the 2000+ Wikipedians who voted this year, with the help of one of the election-commissioners. If you are willing, could you please participate (at your option either on-wiki via userspace or off-wiki via email) in an exit poll, and answer some questions about how you decided amongst the ArbCom candidates?

If you decide to participate in this exit poll, the statistical results will be published in the Signpost, an online newspaper with over 1000 Wikipedians among the readership. There are about twelve questions, which have alphanumerical answers; it should take you a few minutes to complete the exit poll questionnaire, and will help improve Wikipedia by giving future candidates information about what you think is important. This is only an unofficial survey, and will have no impact on your actual vote during this election, nor in any future election.

All questions are individually optional, and this entire exit poll itself is also entirely optional, though if you choose not to participate, I would appreciate a brief reply indicating why you decided not to take part (see Question Zero). Thanks for being a Wikipedian

The questionnaire

edit

Dear Wikipedian, please fill out these questions -- at your option via usertalk or via email, see Detailed Instructions at the end of the twelve questions -- by putting the appropriate answer in the blanks provided. If you decide not to answer a question (all questions are optional), please put the reason down: "undecided" / "private information" / "prefer not to answer" / "question is not well-posed" / "other: please specify". Although the Signpost cannot guarantee that complex answers can be processed for publication, it will help us improve future exit polls, if you give us comments about why you could not answer specific questions.

quick and easy exit poll , estimated time required: 4 minutes
  • Q#0. Will you be responding to the questions in this exit poll? Why or why not?
  • Your Answer: Yes
  • Your Comments:
  • Q#1. Arbs must have at least 0k / 2k / 4k / 8k / 16k / 32k+ edits to Wikipedia.
  • Your Numeric Answer: 8k
  • Your Comments: I'd say 10k is a more round number, but I'm generally less interested in edit count at that stage than tenure and participation in bureaucratic activity in this area.
  • Q#2. Arbs must have at least 0 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7+ years editing Wikipedia.
  • Your Numeric Answer: 2
  • Your Comments: See above. Tenure length doesn't tell a further.
  • Q#3. Arbs...
D: should preferably be an admin
  • Your Single-Letter Answer: D
  • Your Comments: I think the community has pretty much said this already.
  • Q#4. Arbs must have at least 0 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7+ years of experience as an admin.
  • Your Numeric Answer: 1
  • Your Comments: See above. Doesn't tell the whole story.
  • Your List-Of-Usernames You Supported: I largely followed User:The_owner_of_all/ACE2015 voting guide this year.
  • Your Comments: I have largely stopped editing Wikipedia as of late but still find the service of value. Far too many candidates are too focused on things not related to building an encyclopedia (like the GGTF bloc) or have shown such spectacularly terrible judgement in administrative activity or interpersonal discussion to not be acceptable or even competent arbitrators.
  • The Quick&Easy End. Thank you for your answers. Please sign with your Wikipedia username here, especially important if you are emailing your answers, so we can avoid double-counting and similar confusion.
the extended exit poll, estimated time required: depends
  • Your List-Of-Usernames You Opposed: I largely followed User:The_owner_of_all/ACE2015 voting guide this year.
  • Your Comments: As above, my opposition came from the bad blocs or worse individuals. Many of the people up for this role shouldn't even be administrators, never mind arbs.
  • Q#7. Are there any Wikipedians you would like to see run for ArbCom, in the December 2016 election, twelve months from now? Who?
  • Your List-Of-Usernames As Potential Future Candidates: n/a
  • Your Comments: I'm not involved enough to know at this point. I fear the leadership in this project may be too broken at this point to find arbitration solutions valuable.
  • Q#8. Why did you vote in the 2015 ArbCom elections? In particular, how did you learn about the election, and what motivated you to participate this year?
  • Your Answer: I voted because, unlike others who take a "burn it to the ground" point of view, I still see value in what this project offers, and we need to protect it still. Hopefully enough voters agreed with me.
  • Your Comments:
  • Q#9. For potential arbs, good indicators of the right kind of contributions outside noticeboard activity, would be:
A: discussions on the talkpages of articles which ARE subject to ArbCom sanctions
B: discussions on the talkpages of articles NOT subject to ArbCom restrictions
C: sending talkpage notifications e.g. with Twinkle, sticking to formal language
D: sending talkpage notifications manually, and explaining with informal English
E: working on policies/guidelines
F: working on essays/helpdocs
G: working on GA/FA/DYK/similar content
H: working on copyedits/infoboxes/pictures/similar content
I: working on categorization e.g. with HotCat
J: working on autofixes e.g. with AWB or REFILL
K: working with other Wikipedians via wikiprojects e.g. with MILHIST
L: working with other Wikipedians via IRC e.g. with #wikipedia-en-help connect or informally
M: working with other Wikipedians via email e.g. with UTRS or informally
N: working with other Wikipedians in person e.g. at edit-a-thons / Wikipedian-in-residence / Wikimania / etc
O: other types of contribution, please specify in your comments
Please specify a comma-separated list of the types of contributions you see as positive indicators for arb-candidates to have.
  • Your List-Of-Letters Answer: All of the above.
  • Your Comments: Arbs should be well-rounded, and all of these should be taken into consideration.
  • Q#10. Arbs who make many well-informed comments at these noticeboards (please specify which!) have the right kind of background, or experience, for ArbCom.

  • Your Comments: Arbs should be well-rounded, and all of these should be taken into consideration.
  • Q#11. Arbs who make many comments at these noticeboards (please specify!) have the wrong kind of temperament, or personality, for ArbCom.
Options: (same as previous question -- please see above)
Please specify a comma-separated list of the noticeboards you see as worrisome personality-indicators for arb-candidates to have.
  • Your List-Of-Letters Answer: All of the above.

I would like to invite you to my RFC request on  the page One America News Networks. I am reaching out to you to include your expert opinion and your solution to this problem in the RFC request. Please also invite more editors so that we can have a fair discussion that will improve the page.

Kind Regards

Please comment on Talk:Libertarianism

edit

Please comment on the discussion regarding the use of the term "right libertarian" to describe libertarians that do not oppose free markets, and that do not make a clear distinction between laissez-faire capitalism and advocacy of free markets. This discussion can be found on the talk page for the Libertarianism article. The term is primarily used in a derogatory way and by self-described "left-libertarians". The individuals described in that article, and in the poorly-titled right-libertarianism article do not typically identify with the political right - or the political for that matter. You've been unsubscribed from the Feedback Request Service

edit

Hi Thargor Orlando! You're receiving this notification because you were previously subscribed to the Feedback Request Service, but you haven't made any edits to the English Wikipedia in over three years.

In order to declutter the Feedback Request Service list, and to produce a greater chance of active users being randomly selected to receive invitations to contribute, you've been unsubscribed, along with all other users who have made no edits in three years or more.

You do not need to do anything about this - if you are happy to not receive Feedback Request Service messages, thank you very much for your contributions in the past, and this will be the last you hear from the service. If, however, you would like to resubscribe yourself, you can follow the below instructions to do so:

  1. Go to the Feedback Request Service page.
  2. Decide which categories are of interest to you, under the RfC and/or GA headings.
  3. Paste {{Frs user|{{subst:currentuser}}|limit}} underneath the relevant heading(s), where limit is the maximum number of requests you wish to receive for that category per month.
  4. Publish the page.

If you've just come back after a wikibreak and are seeing this message, welcome back! You can follow the above instructions to re-activate your subscription. Likewise, if this is an alternate account, please consider subscribing your main account in much the same way.

Note that if you had a rename and left your old name on the FRS page, you may be receiving this message. If so, make sure your new account name is on the FRS list instead.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on the Feedback Request Service talk page, or on the Feedback Request Service bot's operator's talk page. Thank you! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:26, 27 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
