Please give reasons for your many changes to articles

I notice you have been making many changes to articles recently without giving any reasons for them. Some of them are quite major - not only chopping out sections that are well-referenced, but even changing the names of the articles. Would you please give reasons for each of these changes made so far and for any in future when you make them? Sometimes only a line in the edit summary will suffice. Koma Kulshan <+> Mount Baker

Hi; I see your work on Nooksack language and the like; I just made a query on the Mount Baker talkpage about what language "Koma Kulshan" might be from, and what other native names there might be for that mountain. "Indigenous content" on local geography articles of all kinds is appreciated, but I'm always a bit "smirked" when someone gives an indigenous name for something without saying in which language, and also in such a way as to imply it was the name used by all peoples/languages in the area (but most people aren't aware of all the different peoples and languages...). Anyway if you could at least add the Nooksack name if you know it, and/or may recognize where/who Koma Kulshan comes from (I'm sure the indigenous orthography looks quite a bit different huh?). "Perfectamundo!"....The Nooksack name rings a bell, maybe the Halqemeylem name is similar (I was raised in the Fraser Valley and while not indigenous myself it's quite likely the local native name for the mountain has turned up in some brochure or local history at some point in my readings...)....and just as suggestion about the "unidentified Koma tribe", i.e. unidentified mountain tribe....could that be the Nlaka'pamux, whose hunting territories included teh Hoazameen-Chelan area from which Baker is visible in that direction? Just wondering if those names might have "scansion" in Nlaka'pamxu....or in the Similkameen dialect of Okanagan, perhaps.... I've wondered for a while about having a tag on mountain or other geographic articles for "indigenous names needed"; certain Lakes Samish and Sammamish etc. I'd hope already have such content....Skookum1 (talk) 20:40, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

FYI you may wish to amend the Mount Rainier article, which says "Mount Rainier was first known by the Native Americans as Talol, Tahoma, or Tacoma, from the Lushootseed word təqʷúʔbəʔ ("mother of waters") spoken by the Puyallup." Easy enough for me to add the cite you provided on Baker, but I thought perhaps you might have more to say about the variable meaning of Tahoma/Tacoma....Skookum1 (talk) 21:16, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi,

I've relinked pages with your or-enPR template to simple enPR. The reason is that the word "or" implies two different pronunciations rather than two transcriptions. This may seem obvious, but for people who need enPR, it may not be. I see you have moved Gog Magog. Did you realize that that was moved there as a result of a WP:RM less than a year ago? Have you tried to obtain consensus for the move. I'll be asking an admin to revert your move since I have not seen evidence of a change in consensus. MOTE: there is a big difference between Gog and Magog and the band Gog Magog - this was part of a larger set of moves establishing the disambiguation pages Gog and Magog. Castle Bellingham

Hi, although the village's name is written in one word in modern spelling, it were two words at the time of the baronetcy's creation (see the announcement in the London Gazette for this [1]). At articles about peers and baronets/peerages and baronetcies we generally use the original and historic version, the same which is specified in the letter's patent and the relevant works of reference (for example "of the County of Louth" and not "of County Louth", or "King's County" and not "County Offaly" etc ...). So please would you revert your changes at Bellingham Baronets (and maybe other articles). Thanks, Regards,

rv {{Coast Salish in British Columbia}} colours

I reversed your colour change because (!) it was undiscussed and (2) it was garish and over-decorative in nature. And the black-scheme was derived by User:OldManRivers as being more connected to indigenous culture in the region, though his handiwork is {{Skwxwu7mesh}} and {{Kwakwaka'wakw}} and {tl|Coast Salish}}; he prefers that latter one as it doesn't involve "white man's boundaries" (not his words, but that's the concept), even though Coast Salish in BC gets used a lot more "since it's there"). I've never seen a colour-scheme like the one you've tried, and wonder what prompted you to design it; I also find it quite garish, and hard to read - blue-on-green doesn't work well for readability....Skookum1 (talk) 22:51, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Well, the black as I said was chosen by an indigenous person; red and black are iconic in their culture, and while some green is used in some it's used in a certain way, likewise blue and red. Thinking that "earthy" is somehow in harmony with indigenous culture I think he'd tell you is white culture's transposition on what they think indigenous culture is about. Have a look around at the various Coast Salish nation websites, likewise other coastal nations, and you'll find various things; but not the green-green-green flavour of environmentalist-oriented views of native culture. If you want, try posting a question about changing the black theme to User talk:OldManRivers; he hasn't been active lately so much but I know he drops by from time to time; in teh case of Canadian templates there was a very involved discussion of style/development of colour-themes; I know Oregon-based templates tend towards a lot of heavy brown usage; another place to ask or to start a discusson about indigenous-template colour themes & schemes would be at Wikipedia talk:NorthAmNative; start a discussion, somewhere, and try and find something that pleases a lot people, and isn't browser/monitor specific, or potentially so (I'm on Camino on a MacBook, though I don't think that's the problem - blue on green text isn't a known easy-to-read usage, and coloured backgrounds in templates are generally frowned upon; a template's purpose is not decorative).Skookum1 (talk) 23:48, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Pirates

Hi. Thanks for your interes in the Pirates article. Pirates is set entirely onshore - they are never on the boat like in Pinafore, even though a boat was shown in Joe Papp's production and its imitators. But the libretto is clear: they are onshore. Also, putting the date, February 29, where you did is jumping the gun, because the joke about leap year doesn't occur until Act II, and it upsets the narrative flow of the synopsis to start off with it. Plus it is actually wrong, because he is 21 (or 5 and 1/4), so this is not a leap year. It must be either March 1 or Feb. 28. A lot of editors have spent several years working on this article and have done research on it in the standard reference works, and we have considered some of these ideas already. Why don't you discuss what you think ought to be changed on the talk page of the article before going ahead? Hello, again! I have yet to hear from you, but I have another comment on your current projects. I see that you created List of settlement nicknames in Washington, with a much longer list of Washington nicknames than exists in List of city nicknames in the United States, but no reference citations. Much effort has gone into providing WP:RS reference citations for city nicknames, in large part due to criticism the original article received in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of city nicknames in the United States and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of city nicknames in the United States (2nd nomination). The absence of reference citations is a serious problem for these articles. It would be a shame to return to the days when these articles were full of trivial unsourced pseudo-nicknames like "A-town" and "Elmvegas" (shorthand forms like these crop up everywhere), unsourced street slang like "Memphrica", and terms like "Tree City USA" that aren't actually nicknames at all. Unsourced trivial nickname lists are likely to be deleted, as they truly don't have a place in an encyclopedia.

Additionally, it seems to me that it is desirable to have consistency in series of related articles, which means discussing them. Have these articles been discussed in a Wikiproject that I'm not aware of? --Orlady (talk) 04:02, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

City nicknames, "undesignated communities", etc.

Hi! It sure is difficult to get your attention! Rather than repeat myself, I've copied some of my earlier messages to you out of your Talk page archives (see below). I've also tried to communicate at Talk:List of undesignated communities in Washington and Talk:List of settlement nicknames in Washington, but you have not acknowledged those messages.

I finally gave up waiting and restored the old names of various "List of city nicknames" articles. I am holding off on making changes at List of settlement nicknames in Washington, which is totally unsourced, does not include most of the sourced Washington nicknames found in List of city nicknames in the United States, and is ordered in a fashion that does not make sense to me and is inconsistent with all other city nicknames articles. If you are not interested in discussing your reasons for things, I'll take it upon myself to combine the two Washington lists, formatted consistent with the other articles, and omitting all unsourced and/or trivial nicknames. --Orlady (talk) 23:37, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

• Hi. It's not just a matter of making your actions clear and/or acceptable to me, as neither one of us owns these articles. This is particularly so when dealing with an article like List of city nicknames in the United States that has dozens of contributors make thousands of edits over several years. If you have ideas about renaming that article and the other articles that have been split off from it, please bring them to Talk:List of city nicknames in the United States for discussion.

Similarly, it would be best to continue discussion of other topics on the talk pages for the specific articles, such as Talk:List of settlement nicknames in Washington and Talk:List of undesignated communities in Washington.

I guess that your comment about "format of the Washington page" is in reference to the heading on my April 7th comment on Talk:List of settlement nicknames in Washington. The "format" issue there has to do with listing cities in alphabetical order by their nicknames instead of listing them in order by their actual names, which is the approach used everywhere else. Note that there are more serious issues with that list, though, including the absence of sources and the trivial nature of many of the nicknames.

Sorry, it's Theremin

Hi,

Merriam-Webster is (as can be clearly seen with this example) a dictionary, not an authority on personal names. His name is not Thérémin, as every French speaker could explain to you, would result in an awkward pronunciation.

Here are the correct spellings: Russian: Термен (pronounced [ˈtjɛrmɛn]), French/English: Theremin [tɛʀ'mɛ̃] / [ˈθɛrəmɪn].

A spelling as proposed by you would switch the stress to the second syllable, and result in this: [te:'re:mɛ̃]. (both e as in "way") And you are neglecting the fact that Theremin moved to the US, not France, and never used accents over there. (In fact, the only time an accent (and a grave, not an aigu) was used was for his first patent application in the US: Thèremin (which, btw, would be the only correct french spelling). You may want to read up on Glinsky's biography for that. Thérémin is just wrong in so many aspects. (It's different for the instrument, which in French is indeed spelt "thérémine" for pronounciation reasons resulting from the final "e".) -- megA (talk) 17:06, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

I noticed someone finally created a page for her. I see you specify the death date as 1996, as does the article on Chaplin. Is there any concrete evidence for this date? Addams Family Tree

Hey, I was just browsing in Google when I stumbled upon your Addams Family tree. It's fantastic. But I noticed a few things:

1. It was said that Gomez's paternal grandmother is Squint. In the New Addams Family, her name is Delilah Addams.

2. Uncle Fester is Hester Frump's brother, but his last name is unknown, and he is definitely not a Frump.

3. Hester's father is Grandpa Droop.

If you have any additional information about the Addams Family, please contact me in here. I'm gathering information about the Addams Family relatives and what not.

Please desist arbitrarily changing article names to "list of". It was decided four years ago that O'Rahilly's Ivernic hypothesis, which is not much in favour these days, did not require its own article - See Talk:Ivernic language and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ivernic language. Film duologies and hexologies moves

Could you please go to Talk:Film series and explain the moves? I have never heard of either being referred to as such. As these lists have lasted a long while with no one else having a problem with the numeration, I think it would have been better to discuss the moves first. I was and may become again very involved with these lists and have a need to know why these moves took place without an attempt at discussion. Also, you changed everything else, but not my user page. A7 Speedy Deletion Tags

I have just removed your speedy deletion tags from Peace Declaration and Stronger (Gary Barlow song) as neither of these articles meet the A7 criteria as they are clearly not about "a real person, individual animal(s), an organization ... or web content" as one is about a speech and the other about a song. In the latter case it's also not eligable for A9 speedy as we have an article on the artist. It is my beieve that Twinkle does not list the full criteria and so you need to be fully aware of the complete criteria avalaible at WP:CSD before tagging any article for speedy. I'm really surprised you tagged this article. The version you tagged includes many significant notability claims which make it entirely unsuitable for speedy deletion. We need people like you to tag articles and we're grateful for your efforts, but please try to take care. Speedy tags are offputting to newbies, whom we should be encouraging, and an admin in an off-moment could easily have wrongly hit the delete button in response to your tag. I've also denied the speedy on CloudBuddy, as it's clearly not a company, corporation, organization, or group. You might try AfD with this. I can see from other posts here that it's not so unusual for your speedy tagging to be inaccurate. I'm surprised, as you're an established editor here. Unfortunatlety an article such as the high school article is not CSD material. All they have to do by policy is assert notability.
