I'm thinking about writing a story on how people can help with incorporating info on the Hawaiian language more into WP and throughout all of the Wikimedia projects...would that be fine? It would go well with the theme. Singularity09:32, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I award The Obento Musubi the Random Acts of Kindness barnstar for his continued kindness which is greatly appreciated on Wikipedia. — Rgoodermote18:34, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Knew I wasn't the last one to do that stunt. Well I can stake the claim as being the first person to do it today. When I did it they thought I was being serious until Tiptoety removed it and noted it was a joke and then some one reported Jimbo Wales and it went from funny to hilarious. No worries. The barnstars were just part of a long argument to connect together all social iniciatives that have been deleted since Vintei's shop. Taking into account that you made one of the barnstars and that this was a nomination debate after all, it's understandable that you made that mistake, and you already apologized properly anyways.
About barnstars disappearing, the barnstars and userboxes are usually transcluded to the pages where they are (I think that it means that the link to the template gets replaced by the code on the template, so that it no longer gets affected by what happens to the template). I'm not sure how the process works. About the star images, that sort of images normally is left alone for historical purposes as long as there is even one page that links to it (under the "file links" section on the image page). That means that the barnstars that you gave away before the deletion will stay there forever. Only the really very disruptive stuff gets deleted mercilessly from everywhere where it appears.
The guestbook barnstars get deleted because of rewarding certain behaviour, and there was a consensus about it. The same consensus does not appear to exist around secret pages, but who knows how the situation will evolve with time. You better make some good work on mainspace articles so you can justify that you don't all your time on user space :) (altough looking at this [2], you appear to be safe already on that) --Enric Naval (talk) 10:16, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
(compare with mine [3], I have more edits on article talk pages than you, because of arguing stuff on articles so much, lol, way less edits in "user", I suppose that because I never tweak my user page. You can compare taking into account that you your edit total is roughly 5 times my total, and then checking section by section to see if oyu have 5 more times edits there than mine or if you have a different proportion. For example, you have 5 times my edits on mainspace, so same proportion and then you have 100 times my edits on template space, amd some edits on template talk space, which I have never used, lol is there actually a talk page on templates? I have to check that. You have more average edits per page, so you concentrate on editing the same pages again and again when compared to articles where you make one or two edits. Recent change patrollers or new page patrollers usually have something can have something like 1.05 edits per page, and anti-vandalism fighters will have around 2 edits per page. If they have rollback or some automated tool like monobook-suite that simulates the rollback feature, that percentage goes to 1.5 and lower because they can revert multiple consecutive vandalisms on one single edit, and can warn lots of vandals that will only receive one warning ever from that user. If you look at the lists at the bottom, I can see that you edit mainly music archives on mainspace, while I edit all sort of stuff. You can also see that I argue again and again on the talk pages of the same articles, lol, the more polemic the more I edit there. On the wikipedia mainspace list, you can see that you edit on wikiproject hawaii and some stuff related a music article becoming featured article, while I edit on deletion debates and sockpuppet cases) So, erm, too long comment again. I hope this crash course on edit counting is useful to you. I'm back to my usual stuff. Cheers --Enric Naval (talk) 10:44, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Man, do *not* delete this sort of templates [4], you are supposed to argue at the nomination page your reasons for keeping the page. Removing a xfD template (includes AfD, MfD, etc) does not stop the discussion, and makes you look bad --Enric Naval (talk) 10:20, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid that, if secret pages are decided to get deleted, yours has a fair chance of being one of the deleted ones. And, of course, the associated barnstar will also be deleted. In spite of Equazion's comment, barnstars like yours are so associated to the secret pages existance that they will probably fall with the pages themselves. This is obvious from the fact that Equazion himself placed the notice. Sorry for too long comments. --Enric Naval (talk) 10:27, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh, man, I'm sorry, I didn't think that you could interpret it as a critique. I was just trying to teach to teach you some stuff about how comparing the wannabe_kate edit count tool results to learn about what an user was mainly doing, and how you could be evaluated by others using this, or how you could evaluate what other users are doing. I didn't intend at all to make any bad statement about your edits. Different sorts of users have different types of edits, and I was just explaining some of those types. I just happened to compare your edits with my edits for convinience. In the fiture, you can evaluate yourself against editors whose edits you like and learn from that (again, I just happened to use my own edits for comparison for convenience of the explanation being given). My apologies for making it sound like an attack or a pejorative comparison. Many times I engage on long tirades without checking if I am making myself clear to the other person. I assure that I just tried to be informative and educative about how to learn fun stuff about other users and impress them with your knowledge of their habits (by checking this tool first). --Enric Naval (talk) 22:27, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
About the secret pages, judging by comments on the nomination debate and by seeing myself some editor actions on secret pages of other users, I can reassure that editors are going to great lenghts in order to make sure that only really useless or harmful to wikipedia secret pages are deleted. I see that they are taking great pains not to disturb users that make a great job and who don't get distracted doing stuff like secret pages instead of improving the encyclopedia. There are, however, some extremes cases of WP:MYSPACE that will get deleted even before the nomination ends, and I read on the debate that some "fake" secret pages had been already deleted already (no idea of what they meant). --Enric Naval (talk) 22:27, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
(This paragraph is a constructive critique and some explanation about xfD stuff) What *does* makes you look bad is removing xfD notices from articles that you created and that other editor has placed a xfD tag. The xfD tag itself tells you not to remove the notice. You should always ask the editor that placed to remove if you feel that it was unfairly placed, or complain on the deletion debate about the nomination and giving arguments. Removing the tag yourself is usually considered a no-no. Also, removing the tag does not stop the process, which will go on for at least 5 days unless an admin overturn the nomination or someone speedy closes it for obvious consensus. If 5 days pass, the nomination can get closed by an admin, or relisted for more consensus, or simply left open while the article is being improved by editors to save it from improvement or for some other reason.--Enric Naval (talk) 22:27, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
The rest of my comment is just informative stuff that tries to be helpful. I commend you to re-read the edit summary thing as an informative tirade about what you can learn from them. I'm afraid that the placement of my last statement was unfortunate. It was a separate statement from the rest of comments above. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I have no critique of your work to do at reviews, since I think you are doing quite well. I was just offering help. If you see any more confusing messages from me, then I'm probably just trying to make some useful suggestion and just failing totally to convey the meaning. Just ask me to clarify the message, and I'll be happy to oblige. --Enric Naval (talk) 22:27, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey, I was wondering if you could add a blank layout to the sandbox page (linked to the news bureau above) and try experimenting with three columns instead of two. I want to fit the most text in the smallest space, but still place readability as the highest priority. This means 50 words max per news item (except the feature), with at least two sidebars for recent listings and smaller one-line updates. I also like the use of larger, medium blue headings. As always, be creative. —Viriditas | Talk11:06, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I stroke a part of your comment here that looked like you were voting again [5], acting by the comment of other editor [6]. It's still the same debate, and editors should only !vote once on the whole debate. As queerbubbles suggest, you can probably !comment as many times as you feel necessary. I'm afraid that my action of striking the vote is now making your comment look ugly :( Feel free to delete my note and rewrite the striken words so it doesn't look like you are voting again --Enric Naval (talk) 12:19, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Nah, I changed your comment to strike your vote, but I'd rather not do alterations that could change the meaning or context, like merging or so, unless absolutely imprescendible and only on clear cases. As it is now, it's not beautiful, but the meaning is clear --Enric Naval (talk) 18:18, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm sure the editor means well, but the latest update to Kalapana violates just about every policy and guideline on Wikipedia. I recommend moving the new material to the talk page for discussion and reverting to the last good version. As for the June issue, I'm glad you are already thinking about it, but since it is only April 4 (where I am at least) I would hope we could at least get started on May's issue first! Let me know if I can help coordinate things between you and Singularity. I would like to get a blank layout added to the sandbox page so we can begin writing the newsletter. I also have some more ideas I would like to discuss with you. Have you started writing about the list yet? If we are going to focus on it as the feature story, it would be a good idea to connect it with the article improvement drive. Speaking of which, will you be able to lend a hand with the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands articles? —Viriditas | Talk09:38, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I think what we should do is add a section to the talk page on the News Bureau where we can discuss proposals for the next issue. Your proposal sounds good, but it would require a lot of research and article writing. I can definitely help out, but we may want to discuss other proposals for June. —Viriditas | Talk09:47, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
BTW, have you had a chance to view the incredible drawings Sean has uploaded for use in NWHI articles? We might want to talk about that as a follow-up to last months issue. Or, we could continue it as a task force series. Either way, it is very newsworthy. —Viriditas | Talk09:58, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

It was not a Keep but it wasn't a delete. They are going to delete secret pages on a case to case basis. Basically, depending on the author. But they are going to delete all fake secret pages. Unsure if this is a victory or not. Rgoodermote21:39, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. —BradV01:48, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Kim Kardashian.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:30, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:A Kind Of Hush (Carpenters album).jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

I'll just respond to your questions as best I can. I'd be great if you could incorporate it into the newsletter.
...A few things about the Hawaiian Wikipedia?
Well, it has 1356 articles, and growing slowly. In the wiki's history, there have been a number of contributors who knew Hawaiian but have come and gone. I hope to stay for a while. Right now, just User:Kamehameha and I are relatively active. There's a ton of stubs, but a couple have some length.
I noticed that you worked on it a lot (especially the main page).
No, I shouldn't get the credit for the main page at all; I didn't touch it. There was an active editor almost two years ago by the name of User:Tauleonui who had knowledge on Hawaiian and contributed several articles, and he was the one that completely wrote it. However, he mysteriously left the project in August '06. If only he could have stayed longer...
How can we expand the Hawaiian Wikipedia? How will those like me who can't speak Hawaiian contribute to the Hawaiian Wikipedia more effectively?
We need template designers for the article templates (it seems that copy-pasting from here doesn't work, and I'm not knowledgeable in wiki markup besides the basics) and, as you suggested, a new design for the Main Page. And, of course, it would help if we had Hawaiian speakers who are computer savvy and have fun helping to write an encyclopedia. It's hard to contribute unless you fit as one of these two people. (If you have more creative ideas, you can add them yourself)
How can we get more members?
If you're interested in helping out, you can contact me here or at haw and I'll try to guide you as best as possible. Another way to get more members is recruitment. If you know any Hawaiian speakers, please ask them to stop by on the Hawaiian Wikipedia.

I've been looking through your contributions and I think you would make a great admin. Have you thought about applying for WP:ADCO/RFC? You could also improve your project space edits by helping the Hawaii project complete a scheduled list of maintenance and participate in ongoing discussions. As for article space, I could help you during the May expansion drive, and bring the Hawaiian words articles to a DYK, and work on the FL with you. Let me know. Viriditas (talk) 01:44, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, that's not your fault! Get another coach! I'm serious, if you get enough experience in project space, I can't see why anyone would vote against you. Remember, never give up. Nobody will ever give you anything in life; you have to do this on your own. Think about it and try again. Viriditas (talk) 03:10, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Head's up! If you want a coach to pick you sooner or later, you're going to have to start getting involved in discussions like WP:XFD. Coaches will tend to pick you if they see you working for a few weeks on any of those pages. You also need to work on article writing and develop a very thick skin. Remember, admins get attacked just about every day of the week, so the first thing you need to learn is to let things slide and don't take anything personally. Viriditas (talk) 10:14, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I understand your position, but participating in Xfd also means closing discussions and other maintenance tasks. Whether you like it or not, pretty much every admin has to do a tour of duty over there; your admin coach will tell you the same thing. Look, all you have to do is limit yourself to one edit over there per day. Start slow. Get involved in policy and guideline discussions. Help users at the ref desk. And above all, find a topic you really love, and write about it. Your coach wants an admin who is well-rounded, and by the end of your training will be able to do just about anything. You will have plenty of time to specialize after you become an admin. But now, you will need to cross-train. Try to follow what is going on in all areas of administration, and you will quickly learn the ropes. Your coach is going to want you to get your feet wet, so I'm trying to prepare you for that. Viriditas (talk) 21:34, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi O-M, I came here to take a good look at you to see if you might be a person ready to go straight to RfA or if Coaching might be of benefit. Looking at your history, it looks like you might benefit from coaching, but I do have to ask, what do you expect to get out of Admin Coaching? If you are interested, I would be happy to take a closer look at your edits and consider you for coaching. I should warn you, that I am one of the tougher coaches out there. I generally expect coaching to last 1-3 months depending on experience (you have a lot, so it might be on the shorter side.) But the advise Viriditas has given you here is spot on. PS I personally prefer to have conversations at one place, it makes it easier to follow, so please respond here.Balloonman (talk) 06:22, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hey Balloonman, thanks for volunteering to coach me. From admin coaching, I would just love to know some of the stuff about what an admin does. I've been confused as to the recall process and why someone would (not) want to do recall. As a student, I will try my hardest to do whatever you tell me to do, but it may be hard considering that I don't know lots of the shortcuts used to link to pages (i.e. when Viriditas linked to WP:XFD, I was pretty sure it was something to do with deletion but I didn't know what it was). I am also sorta unsure about what request for comment is. I'd love to be your trainee, and hope to hear from you soon! – ObentoMusubi (C • G • S) 06:59, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
