DYK for Misfits and Magic

On 19 August 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Misfits and Magic, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the creators of Misfits and Magic said that they sympathize with those who choose not to watch it? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Misfits and Magic. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Misfits and Magic), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

my story today

Thank you for that one! - My story today - a first - isn't about an article by me, but one I reviewed for DYK, see here. I like all: topic, "hook", connected article (a GA on its way towards FA), image and the music "in the background". I just returned from a weekend with two weddings, so also like the spirit ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:15, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

Again not by me: today's story - with the triumph of music over military - is uplifting! - No cake yet, but a butterfly and open-air opera. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:25, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

More pics uploaded, with wedding cakes - I couldn't resist. Today's story is about the Inkpot Madonna who returned to "her place" 9 years ago, and also has aspects of early learning, see? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:04, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

308 supports and rising, as I predicted ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:25, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Congratulations! - Today is the anniversary of the premiere of Götterdämmerung. Berit Lindholm sang its final scene in concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London, only four years after her stage debut in a Mozart opera in Stockholm. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:17, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

I have a small job for you: watch Rachel Yakar where I just reverted unexplained changes to a GA a second time. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:27, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: I'm not wholly convinced that the edits are vandalism (if they are, they're very elaborate vandalism), so I would open a dialogue rather than risk edit-warring :) theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/her) 18:10, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
?? Vandalism? I only asked you to watch it, no? - Open a dialogue? I did before I asked you, no? - The edits had a miserable edit summary, and changed the referencing which had just been changed for GA, with a ref after each sentence. I was going out, and didn't want the article to stay in that condition in case it happened again. Sorry that I had no time to explain all that ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:39, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: Well, watch for what, then? :) If they're not vandalism, please follow WP:BRD and open up a discussion on the talk page (which I don't see). theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/her) 21:53, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
I am sorry about my lack of English. - I opened the discussion. I had to go out for several hours, and wanted to prevent the article to stay in an unwanted stage, and you were the first person coming to my mind. I'm back now, - relax. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:01, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: I'm curious – when you say you opened the discussion, do you mean in your edit summaries? Because the talk page hasn'tbeen edited in weeks... theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/her) 22:04, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
Now I'm even more sorry, because, while I'm sure I typed that message to the user, I'm not sure I hit "save", and looks like I didn't. I'm too tired to type it again, but will if it happens again. The concert was great (on my talk)! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:24, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

Today is Debussy's birthday. - I'm proud of that DYK, last year. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:39, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

This too shall pass. - Ten years ago on 28 August, I heard a symphony, with a heavy heart because of the pending decision in WP:ARBINFOBOX, and not worried about my future here but Andy's. - It passed, and I could write the DYK about calling to dance, not battle, and Andy could write the DYK mentioning about peace and reconciliation, - look. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:54, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Closing August: I am proud of expanding Berit Lindholm, but not of the hook for her, which I believe doesn't represent her (and perhaps that is what I want most in a hook), but it's past, - our audience clicked, and I hope it was for the pic. (I have reason for that hope: 1.4k clicked on dramatic soprano, but less than 1k on the director.) - I like to see Alma Mahler on the Main page today, after I just heard some of her songs. That was a clever hook, I think. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:19, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  •   Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  •   Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  •   Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Was intentional actually!

[1] This was intentional—the book is an anthology and the critic is disappointed that the book didn't include poetry, not that the book didn't discuss poetry ~ F4U (talkthey/it) 00:45, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

@Freedom4U: aha, gotcha! i'll revert :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 05:42, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Congrats!

A belated congrats on your adminship, it's well deserved, and I'm frustrated I wasn't around to add a support (which I had been mentally composing for a while). Happy to see it was not needed at all. I'm sure you will do great things (in part because you already have). Best wishes, Eddie891 Talk Work 21:17, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

aw, shucks – thanks, Eddie! Means a ton from you, and I'm glad to see you're back :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 15:30, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Template:DYKSymbols2

Theleekycauldron, your edits yesterday have, unfortunately, broken DYKSymbols2. Instead of offering the DYKproblem template with the article name substituted for the word "Article", and the two additional fields "|header=yes|sig=yes", it just offers the word "Article". Please either fix it so it does the article name substitution as it used to, or revert until you can track down the issue so it's usable again. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 19:10, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

@BlueMoonset: should be fixed now? just restored the old DYKproblem string. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 19:52, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Yep, that did it. Thank you! I use that a lot when I'm notifying nominators they need to return to the DYK review to do something; there are always a few every time I go through the Nominations page and put together one of my older nominations needing review lists. Manual update

Hi, thanks for the manual update! I think you may have forgotten to protect the image but fortunately the vandals were asleep so this caused no nightmares. I hope KrinkleBot gets restarted soon. —Kusma (talk) 13:18, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

Nice catch, Kusma! I never suspected KrinkleBot would be down, that's on me :)
We also really need a tool to do this kind of thing, both posting updates and protecting images. I should add that to my to-do list for PSHAW. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 22:16, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
My experience of using the Commons admins ping on WP:Discord was very positive; I think they are super fast and helpful with things like protecting images. Perhaps it would be enough to have PSHAW refuse to do a "manual" update if the image isn't protected, and to suggest the alternative of getting a Commons admin in the instructions. —Kusma (talk) 08:55, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

September songs

my story today

Our festival's last concert was most moving and inspiring, - also the story of Walter Arlen, - today I'm proud that I survived the decision in WP:ARBINFOBOX for 10 years, standing and singing -- (forgot to sign)

Today's story is about a great pianist with an unusual career, taking off when he was 50. Today is the wedding anniversary of Clara and Robert Schumann, but I was too late with our gift, at least for bringing it to DYK. Tomorrow is her birthday, - and a miracle of promotion might still happen ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:20, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

The miracle did not happen, which gives us a chance to improve the article. - Today's topic is Margherita Rinaldi, and I am happy that there won't be a DYK temptation. I am a bit sad that my general question, if we should do justice to our subjects, found rather little interest. I still hate the idea of saying about a notable person, a Jew who made it to minister of finance of Bavaria (a nice bit of cultural and political history, no?) only that he was an unsuccessful lover and husband, with at least two people possibly glad about his death. There was a calculation how many thousands and hundreds became interested and read the article and related articles. I, however, am worried about the millions who will not have clicked, and take home that the man was an unsuccessful lover and husband. - I added a few German refs to Hevenu shalom aleichem, but am surprised that you had doubts about the notability of a song that serves as a symbol of Israel worldwide, and as a peace song that is used worldwide. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:30, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

I don't agree with what you called "trimming" a hook for Myrthen. He composed what? - This has been called the greatest wedding gift ever, which doesn't show in a just a title with no specification. Many composers composed something for their bride, - can we please be specific in what this is? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:23, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: Okay, I hear you :) how about:
theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 22:33, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, no. (And it's past midnight, I'll have to get p at 7:30, and will be away all day tomorrow.) He wrote Myrthen, not Myrtles. I have no idea what "Myrtles and its 26 pieces" is supposed to mean. No hint at singing? Why?? Why not take the approved hook??? - I don't know any other song cycle in four books, and believe that it introduces well how much thought he put into it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:41, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
Gerda, basic information about a work communicates something very different to an expert like you than it does to other people. The hook doesn't add that meaning for most readers, it just adds more words they won't read through. Of course, if you truly object, I am happy to pull the hook to another prep or reopen the nomination. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 22:50, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
I am sorry, I have no idea what "Myrtles and its 26 pieces" conveys, really, - I probably lack English. Please reopen the nom. I'd like to get more of the article translated before it runs. I cut things out to make the wedding day or at least her birthday, but as we missed we can also wait a bit longer and have a better article. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:00, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
Today I remember Raymond Arritt, who still helps me, five years after he died, per what he said in my darkest time on Wikipedia (placed in my edit-notice as a reminder), and by teh rulez. - Latest pics from a weekend in Berlin (one more day to come). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:07, 19 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for improving articles in September! - I decided to improve Myrthen now (not next year), and there's progress (by El C) for the peace song. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:55, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Did you know...Lillian Holdeman Moore page

Thanks for checking in with me, that was very kind. I apologize, the first month of the semester knocked me down hard. I have made the edits requested namely, added the page numbers for reference 3 (had the book on my desk actually!) and corrected the bacterial numbers. Couldn't figure out how to write this on the template comment page--I'm still a newbie and learning. What next! PlantPoet (talk) 17:44, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Happy to help, PlantPoet! I'll cc C messier as the reviewer – you can leave comments by editing [[Template:Did you know nominations/Lillian Holdeman Moore and writing inside, at the bottom of, the {{DYKsubpage}} template (so basically right above the line that says "please do not write below this line."). Thanks for dropping by! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 23:47, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
