Thanks so much for all your help with our course, and for the constant feedback and assistance. We really appreciate it! Mgantony (talk) 23:45, 25 March 2013 (UTC) |
- I'm glad everything turned out so well, and I sincerely hope to be able to do something similar to this again with Schreiner. It was a blast working with you and your students, and you should be very proud of what they accomplished; are you planning on running another Wikipedia course next year? —Theopolisme (talk) 00:08, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Bot bugs
Hi! I've found two bugs with your bot:
- File:Avvo.com consumer logo, March 2013.png: The bot broke the file.
- File:All Hope is Gone (original).jpg: The bot removed the {{non-free reduce}} tag, but the file is still too big in my opinion. Note that there are two files in the history. Maybe the bot checked the size of the first file instead of the size of the second file. This also happened with File:Converge-JaneDoe.jpg.
I haven't checked all of your bot's edits, so I'm not sure if the same problem might have happened with some other file too. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:45, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- No idea what happened with file #1...it shall be investigated. :) In response to number 2, yep, you are correct--the bot checked the size of the first file...however, in this case, I don't think it's an issue, since the deleting admin will (if they have any sense) delete the newer, larger revision. Regardless, I'll take a look and make sure it checks only the latest version in the future. Thanks, —Theopolisme (talk) 22:56, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- I don't think that File:Avvo.com consumer logo, March 2013.png meets the threshold of originality, so I have moved it to Commons. If you wish to test your bot's bug, try File:V-league2011.png instead. --Stefan2 (talk) 11:06, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
Two more bugs:
- File:Chicagolions logo.png: The bot doesn't understand that {{reduce}} redirects to {{non-free reduce}}, so no {{subst:furd}} is added. Also, several reduced copies have been uploaded.
- File:Criollísima (album).jpg: The bot won't reduce the file for some reason. The bot seems to operate in alphabetical order, so I'd assume that the file should have been reduced. Some other images have also been skipped as you can see in the category. I assume that OGV and XCF are odd formats which the bot simply doesn't handle, but I don't see why it leaves a few PNG and JPG files. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:51, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- It looks like the bot is skipping all unicode-encoded files, probably due to the way mwclient parses them. A fix shall come forth momentarily. I've added the File:Chicagolions logo.png fix as well for all redirects to {{non-free reduce}}. —Theopolisme (talk) 23:53, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- Resolved. —Theopolisme (talk) 01:07, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Two more things:
- File:IntuWatford.png and another image used {{subst:non-free reduce}} instead of {{non-free reduce}}, so your bot didn't add {{subst:furd}}. I'm not sure if it is worth the trouble to let the bot handle these situations. I added {{subst:furd}} to the other file, but I'm leaving this one in case you wish to test something.
- Some files, like File:I-might-be-a-cunt-but-im-not-a-fucking-cunt-video-screenshot.jpg, were skipped, but JPG isn't an unusual image format. --Stefan2 (talk) 10:23, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
- I decided to go the easy route with your first issue; I don't think it's worth it to waste time checking for that on every image (and what if the template is changed, yadda yadda...). I'm currently looking through the list of skipped files...I'm going to rerun the bot again and try to make any fixes needed. —Theopolisme (talk) 10:56, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
- And it looks like everything has been squared away; at the moment, there are only six files that the bot has skipped (the ones of formats that it can't handle)...other than that, everything is working. Bot will run at (around) 02:30 UTC daily from now on. Cheers, —Theopolisme (talk) 11:37, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
- There's still one JPG file there. However, if it only skips one JPG file out of several thousands of them, it is probably easier to reduce that one manually. --Stefan2 (talk) 11:46, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
- You sure that 'one JPG' wasn't added after the bot ran? According to my logs, it didn't skip anything—keep in mind that new files are added to the category quite frequently. Cheers, and working on the second bot request now, —Theopolisme (talk) 21:00, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Requesting assistance
Hello Theopolisme: I've created the new WikiProject Breakfast and I would like to have an article statistics box on the page. I am requesting assistance to configure User:WP 1.0 bot to accomplish this. I've created this page User:WP 1.0 bot/Tables/Project/Breakfast, and also this page Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Breakfast articles by quality statistics, the latter of which I'm unsure of being needed or not. (The information on both pages is currently commented-out, so to view, press "edit" on them.) So, if you can help out regarding this matter, it would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Northamerica1000(talk) 05:55, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
- The bot is all set up to run for the WikiProject, but due to replag on the Toolserver, which the bot runs on, it may take a bit of time for it to recognize the project. Please be patient, and let me know if nothing happens in the next few days. —Theopolisme (talk) 13:22, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, I've un-commented out the page User:WP 1.0 bot/Tables/Project/Breakfast to test. It's currently listing articles that are not tagged with the project's banner. I'll watch it per your advisement, and look forward to it becoming functional. Thanks for your assistance, it is appreciated! Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 14:52, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Neon Knome
Hi Theoplisme. A while back you resolved my AfD request re: Neon Knome by turning it into a redirect to The Problem Solverz. An IP user has recently restored the article to its grammatically confusing, spelling-error-laden, non-notable glory, and rather than get myself into an edit-war, I thought I'd solicit your guidance. Whomever is editing from that IP doesn't seem to understand, for example, that claiming the show was cancelled for being "too mind-blowingly cute" (even though the phrase appeared on-screen during one of Adult Swim's self-serving interstitials,) probably doesn't conform to encyclopedic standards. Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:08, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
- Looks like this was dealt with; if the problem persists, I'd suggest reopening a new AfD, given its limited participation previously. —Theopolisme (talk) 02:26, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
Theo's Little Bot
I have seen this bot going around reducing images to 0.1 MP, but I'm not sure if it is appropriate for all fair-use images. I think a human review should occur before making such reductions. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 06:38, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
- Hi, KoH; nice to see you 'round these parts. In response to your question, a human review does occur--admins still ultimately make the final call before deleting said non-free revisions of the file, and if the deleting admin feels that, *hey*, this file is already good as is, it's a cinch to revert the bot and remove the {{non-free reduce}} tag. —Theopolisme (talk) 13:27, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
- Also, a human reviews if the file should be reduced in the first place. The {{non-free reduce}} tag is always added manually.
- Other bot features:
- Sometimes files are reduced twice (e.g. File:Nazo no clover page 7.jpg). This should probably be fixed, although I guess it's not too much trouble to remove an extra revision.
- File:I-might-be-a-cunt-but-im-not-a-fucking-cunt-video-screenshot.jpg has still not been reduced. The latest edit to the file information page was in January, so it was definitely tagged during the latest bot run. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:57, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- Currently the bot has been acting very strangely - I assume it's due to some of the issues that the toolserver has been having (that's why it takes 20+ minutes per edit...in turn why the file was reduced twice, I assume, since the script re-looped before the edit saved). In response to File:I-might-be-a-cunt-but-im-not-a-fucking-cunt-video-screenshot.jpg, though, the bot will not reduce this file, due to the title blacklist error it gets when attempting to upload it. —Theopolisme (talk) 15:09, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- I didn't know that the title was on the blacklist. You wrote that it would run everyday around 2.30 AM. It has run everyday (I think), but usually nowhere close to 2.30 AM. Is this also because of toolserver problems? --Stefan2 (talk) 15:16, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- Yep, it's been running around ~08:00 lately, if I recall correctly. —Theopolisme (talk) 22:45, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

- Please see File:Ghost in the Shell.jpg. The bot reduced the initial upload, not the most recent upload. If someone overwrites a file with a better copy, it would be better to reduce that one instead. --Stefan2 (talk) 12:32, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Australian Roads
I can understand why the bot would be adding the "road" parameter to the talk pages of roads, but why is it adding the parameter to the talk page of biographies? (The times are GMT+9:30. The list is from my watchlist.) Pdfpdf (talk) 12:37, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- The bot has been adding road parameters to articles that aren't related to roads because some non-road categories are sub-sub-sub-categories of Category:Roads in Australia -thats really my fault for not checking carefully enough. The categories that should have been excluded are:
- Category:Jubilee 150 Walkway (117 P) - this is where the bios have come from
- The following categories are actually for buildings:
- Category:St Georges Terrace (11 P)
- Category:Adelaide Street, Fremantle (3 P)
- Category:Cliff Street, Fremantle (2 P)
- Category:Henry Street, Fremantle (5 P)
- Category:High Street, Fremantle (13 P)
- Category:Marine Terrace, Fremantle (3 P)
- Category:Philimore Street, Fremantle (3 P)
- Category:Queen Street, Fremantle (2 P)}}
- I've already removed the parameters from the FA-class articles, but am not sure if the bot will need to modified so that it doesn't re-add any removed parameters next if it runs, or how easy or hard it will be to undo the changes to the pages in the above categories - Evad37 (talk) 16:23, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- I've updated the code to skip all pages in Category:Jubilee 150 Walkway—thanks for bringing this to my attention! Cheers, —Theopolisme (talk) 21:33, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Descriptions
Any chance of adding a bot task to handle Category:Files lacking an author which currently has over 6000 entries?
The template to subst here is {{add-author-I}} compared to the one for missing descriptions, but it's otherwise the same logic. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:14, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
- The bot actually works through those files as well already, as files tagged with {{add-author-I}} are placed into the same meta-category; for example, see [2], which was about missing author info. —Theopolisme (talk) 13:52, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello, please specify precisely what changes would be needed to the page for File:SeatingArrangementForSacredHarp.gif in order for you not to want to delete it. Sincerely, Opus33 (talk) 18:04, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

- Hello, checking further, I realize that this image is not used on any article pages and has been replaced in the Sacred Harp article by a more accurate image (File:HollowSquareInSacredHarp.PNG). So in fact it would be perfectly ok to delete it. Opus33 (talk)
Disputed non-free use rationale for File:MetaLab, Ltd. Logo.png
Thank you for uploading File:MetaLab, Ltd. Logo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:44, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Dear Theopolisme, the author of this image is unknown, I coudn't get information about this person from Carl Zeiss History Support. They don't know even themselves. If you need, I can show you fragment of my mail correspondence with Carl Zeiss Company, which allows using of photography specially for Wikipedia article. Also, I can specify in file description in field `author` "unknown". With best wishes, Nikolas Sharp (talk) 18:23, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Theopolisme,
I received a message from you on my talk page that I did not understand. If you were wondering why I had proposed the article "Boston Marathon explosions" for deletion, the reason was that it was one of 10 articles created about the same topic within just a couple hours. The other articles were more informative than than that one at the time so I decided to nominate it for deletion. Looking back, I should have just turned it into a redirect. Sorry for any misunderstanding this caused.

Could you try make another picture for Earth Day?
Hello,
I know that my picture for Earth Day was kindof bad, as I usually am not good with graphics or pictures. I just made that one up in 5 mins so someone could use a similar design to make a good-looking alternative picture for Earth Day, as I dont like the current image [Because its tangential to the article]. So could you please try designing an alternative picture, or get someone to do it before Monday? I wont be availaible for long, and so i cant try searching for anyone else.
Thanks in advance, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 15:42, 20 April 2013 (UTC) [Talkback plz!]

About your bot
What's the difference between a "base URL" and what I apparently should be using? I'd like to fix how I do the images... Tom Danson (talk) 21:32, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- Currently, your images' source is not an Internet source for an image that was likely found on the Internet. Namely, just saying The logo may be obtained from ORGANIZATION is not preferable; rather, it'd better if you included a link to the specific webpages where you obtained the images from. Hope this helps! —Theopolisme (talk) 21:39, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- But you also tagged images for which I gave a URL...what is the "proper" URL for me to list? Tom Danson (talk) 22:59, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
- Let's use an example: Say you went to http://example.com/books and saw an image on that page that you wanted to use on Wikipedia. So you right clicked on the image and clicked "open in new tab" (or the like) and was redirected to the page http://example.com/thejo/fnkd/rje/gfdkhjs.jpg, which consisted solely of that image. For image sourcing on Wikipedia, you should include the first url, /books, not the direct path to the image. Make sense? —Theopolisme (talk) 11:05, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Theopolisme, could you have a little look into what your bot is up to? It's sending a lot of "Notifying user about missing file description(s)" messages more than usual. Looks like when the Toolserver crashed two nights ago (also temporarily disabling my bot and a few others), my temporary files which stored a database of recently notified users were all deleted, causing it to basically start from scratch. Hey Theopolisme :). I'm dropping you a note because you have signed up for the Notifications, or Echo, newsletter.
If all goes according to plan, we should be launching Echo on en-wiki either tomorrow, or next Tuesday - I'll drop a followup tomorrow when we know what's happening. Should the launch succeed, we'll begin the process of triaging bugs and gathering feedback on what features work, what cause problems, and what we should do next; I hope you'll help us out on these fronts by leaving any comments you might have on the talkpage.

Can you check what went wrong with File:Syndicate 2012 bloom.jpg? The bot didn't reduce the most recent revision of the file but an earlier file. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:00, 25 April 2013 (UTC)
- I have...no idea. Currently the bot grabs the image file to manipulate from the image's raw url (in this case [3]), which should always reflect the latest rendition of the file...unless maybe there was some kind of upload.wikimedia.org lag? —Theopolisme (talk) 01:41, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Bot
Hello. I am a user in greek and english wikipedia. I want to create a bot. I have already create an account User:Xaris333Bot. I need someone to help me with the next steps. I tried to follow the steps from Wikipedia:Creating a bot but i confused. I choose Pywikipediabot. Can you please write me the steps i must follow to create the bot? Xaris333 (talk) 22:21, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
- In order to create a bot, you need to first know what you'd like it to do--is there a specific repetitive task that you want the bot to accomplish automatically? Theopolisme (talk) 22:48, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
Yes. I want a bot that
- can add categories to articles of another category
- can add specific templates is articles and talk pages
- can find the articles of a category on english WP that have version in greek WP and the opposite
- can add the greek version of category to the greek version of articles that their english version included in the english category.
- can change a phrase with another one.
Xaris333 (talk) 23:24, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
- Xaris333, Pywikipediabot can definitely do that, but you're actually talking about a ton of different tasks. In order to run a bot, you need at least some programming experience--otherwise, it might be wise to post a message at WP:BOTREQ with specific details about exactly what you want it to do. Theopolisme (talk) 23:58, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
Ok. I apologize for the inconvenience. Bye. Xaris333 (talk) 01:03, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

User:Technical 13/Templates/SS
Hey, I see you modified User:Technical 13/Templates/SS in my userspace. I'm happy to know that other people are using it as well. I'm thinking about adding the default "Support" in a normal font size to the front of it as is used in most discussions, do you like the idea? If not, I can certainly add it as a parameter. I was even thinking of making it random by default (Approve - Support - Yes) and so that you could specify which (or use another) with a parameter like |status=
. The coding for this might look like:
{{#switch:{{lc:{{{status|random}}}}}|n|no|off=|a|approve='''Approve'''|s|support='''Support'''|y|yes='''Yes'''|random='''{{#switch:{{Rand|3}}|0=Approve|1=Support|#default=Yes}}'''|#default='''{{{status}}}'''}}

Can't find work
Hi, before 5-6 days you have advised me to find a work that my Bot will do. Now i am confused what to do. Can you assign some work for me in other words can you help me find a work to be done by my Bot ?? Himanis Das talk 02:08, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
- You can take a look at WP:BOTREQ, but I'd like to re-emphasize that operating a bot takes significant technical prowess. I'm not able to build the bot for you; if you're unskilled in that area, might I suggest looking into the other sides of Wikipedia? There's much more you can do on here. :) Theopolisme (talk) 02:12, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Hi! If you get the chance, could you take a look at whatever caused the bot to blank the table? Thanks! --Rschen7754 22:25, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- @Rschen7754: The entire Toolserver went down in phases over the past few days, effectively confusing the bot in the process. The long-term goal is to migrate the bot to Wikimedia Labs (as soon as labs enables database replication), where it shouldn't have these problems. Hi, you may need to remove "ref names" as well as the links themselves for multiple citations, otherwise another bot will try and "rescue" the link - see this. GiantSnowman 08:29, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- Even though it wasn't your idea to do this, it is your bot that is doing the task, so I thought I'd let you know that I've opened a new thread at AN/I (here), as I feel it is wrong to remove citations simply because they are dead. Mentoz86 (talk) 09:18, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

I was too late to reply on the AN/I post before it was closed, but I support Struway's suggestion and agree with GiantSnowman that external links to playerhistory should be removed. As the three football-editors involved in the discussion seem to agree, I believe you could safely let the bot start the task. Mentoz86 (talk) 02:45, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
T-Dog (The Walking Dead)
Hi there,
I'm approaching you because you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/T-Dog (The Walking Dead). It's a courtesy to speak to the closing admin before restoring an article deleted at AFD. At the time of the AFD, T-Dog had no sources at all, so it's no surprise that article was redirected. However, this week I have found that "The Walking Dead" characters are surprisingly easy to find sources for, most likely due to the popularity of the show. For comparison purposes, see what I was able to do with Merle[4][5], Tyreese[6][7] and Milton.[8][9]. I have no doubt that I could do similar work on T-Dog, especially since he appeared in far more episodes than any of those characters. BOZ (talk) 23:59, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
- BOZ, hi--by all means, go for it! I'm excited to see what you're going to be able to put together, and I'd like to thank you for your good work on the other articles as well. Cheers, Theopolisme (talk) 13:44, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
- You got it - I will pick that back up on Monday, probably too busy over the weekend. BOZ (talk) 15:12, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
What do you think so far? All I have left to do is finish the third season for the "development and reception" section, which should really bulk up that part since there was a lot of coverage of his death. BOZ (talk) 22:42, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Closing PC/2 RfC
If you want to close the PC/2 RfC within the next 45 minutes or so, I can get the other one up and running. Otherwise it will have to be at least tonight before I can. Deadbeef 17:09, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- @Deadbeef: It's only been open for a day--most RfCs run significantly longer, unless I'm missing something here. Theopolisme (talk) 17:19, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- I was suggesting based on King of Heart's suggestion to close, based on the fact that many support, oppose, and discussion comments mention wanting to have ground rules, etc. for PC/2 before an up-down vote on it. I have another RfC outlined and ready to publish if the current one were to close. If you don't want to close the current one, then don't, but it does appear to be drifting towards looking like the cart is before the horse. Your discretion, I suppose. - It should be closed per WP:SNOW since it only had 41% support just a month ago when it was introduced as an alternative to Page Protected Editor. Isn't there a policy that says you can't rush back into an RfC less than a month after one fails for the same thing? Technical 13 (talk) 17:28, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- That RfC proposed it strictly in terms of editing templates as an alternate to a new user right, rather than assessing its validity in general. In any case, it doesn't seem like you want to close it soon, so I'll simply say once more that I was suggesting a close as an extension of KoH's comment that seemed (seems) valid, and I'll continue deferring judgement of the RfC to the community. I'd be happy to wait a week and, if consensus seems clear then that more specifics are needed, close as such then. Theopolisme (talk) 20:00, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I'll hold what I have in purgatory for if/when it becomes needed. Deadbeef 01:10, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- People seem to be treating it as a vote on whether there's a role for any implementation of PC2, and they seem to be content to have this vote before we have relevant trial data or a discussion of specifics, so I guess that's the main question for this one. Personally, I have no objection to a close by one person, but there's something of an expectation for more closers for weighty RfCs where the vote is close. My recommendation would be that you ask for one or two more closers on the up-or-down vote (WP:AN, WP:BN, and WT:RFA are all good options), then I'll join in the discussion of the closing statement if the answer is "up". - Dank (push to talk) 17:59, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
