Welcome to Wikipedia

Welcome!

Hello, Throup/Archive 1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!  -- Thorpe talk 16:57, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

Just realised...

...all of the letters in your name are in mine (Throup, Thorpe). -- Thorpe talk 23:18, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the friendly welcome. Not quite all of the letters are the same (I've got a 'u' and you've got an 'e'), but they certainly are close. Throup is actually my surname and is regulary misspelled or mispronounced as Thorpe. throup 07:09, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
I just don't want people getting confused between the two of us. Hope you enjoy it here! -- Thorpe talk 11:43, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm sure people will cope fine! I would offer to change my user name, but I use my surname everywhere online as it is very rare for anyone else to have done. I look forward to editing with you in the future. throup 18:41, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

DSG logos

Hi. I am new to Wikipedia and I've started off by updating some articles with images. I have noticed you have renamed and altered copyright details for PC World (store) and The Link (retailer) logos I had added. I was wondering what the reason for this was and hoped you could explain this. BTW please don't see this as a complaint; if there are rules I have missed, I like to find out about them :-). One other thing, although some of the company websites still refer to DSG retail, the parent company for PC World & The Link, and therefore the copyright holder, has been known as DSG International since last month. In fact, they haven't been called DSG Retail for several years, but some of their sites were obviously never updated to reflect that! throup 22:03, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

Sorry if me replacing your images with newly named (but identical) ones was a little annoying. I just thought that giving logo in the file name was a better idea and wouldn't cause any kind of confusion with other images that may be uploaded later. Does that answer your question? If not let me know and I'll be happy to elaborate. If you need any help with using Wikipedia and getting to know it just send me a message and I'll get back to you and hopefully help you as best I can. Wikiwoohoo 18:23, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I wasn't annoyed with you changing the files, just a little concerned that I may have misunderstood accepted naming conventions. I guess in this case it's down to personal opinion, so I'm happy to go with the way of least confusion :-). BTW, I have edited the copyright notices to refer to DSG International again as that is the new group name. I am looking forward to editing with you in the future. throup 18:36, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Doctor Who theme music

Just to drop you a note to say I enjoyed listening to your reading of this article :-) --TimPope 19:19, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks! I don't think it's perfect, but I'm quite happy with it as a first attempt. I'm glad you enjoyed listening to it. I might have a go at some of the other Who articles soon. throup 19:24, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
Hi! I liked it too, but Tim beat me to it :). I especially liked using the various renditions of the theme in the background. Very cool. You ought to have a go at Dalek (just don't do it as a dalek!:)--Sean Jelly Baby? 20:25, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks too, Sean. The Dalek one looks interesting... maybe next weekend you'll be able to hear that too. No promises of course! throup 21:29, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

Outpost Gallifrey

Hi, Throup. I'm khaosworks on Outpost Gallifrey - do a search for me and I'll be there. I only post sporadically these days because I spend most my time here, but I have spurts of activity from time to time. :) --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 00:53, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Solid Snake reading

I enjoyed listening to your recording of Solid Snake. As you asked for some feedback, I thought I'd give you some.

I think your accent is fine, but you may want to slow down a little as you are reading. Otherwise, I think it is an excellent contribution to the Spoken Wikipedia. Let me know if you do any more. throup 16:54, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Well, thank you very much for insightful and rapid advice, I will take that into consideration. Actually, the original version of the recorded file had lots of gaps and silent moments, which I then deleted with Audacity because I thought the reading was too slow. It was best that you told me, otherwise I would not have noticed.
p.s. I copied your signature, which was very nice, I hope you dont't mind. Federico Pistono (really 17:40, 9 October 2005 (UTC))
When I suggesting slowing down, I meant the speed of the words not the gaps in the reading. You were probably right to delete gaps and silent moments. I hope that makes sense.
I am quite happy for you to use the signature. I think our names are different enough for people to tell us apart! throup 17:56, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
I've just noticed your signature is not reporting the correct time... or more accurately, it always reports the current time regardless of when it was actually posted. I notice you have made it into a template. Try changing the signature option in Special:Preferences and use ~~~~ instead. throup 18:00, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the advice. I fixed both the signature and the file, I hope the situation ameliorated. Federico Pistono 22:30, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

Date formats

What on earth were you up to putting date formats in British articles into American date format. Please don't do it again. Carina22 08:20, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

This was a misunderstanding as to how the date system on Wikipedia functions. I was formatting the dates into the ISO international format (not American style, I hasten to add. In the US they use the short format MM/DD/YYYY -- the ISO format I used is YYYY-MM-DD) which is automatically converted by the Wikipedia into the format specified in Special:Preferences. I did this because I was unaware the Wikipedia is able to convert standard format dates this way too. I was also unaware that users who do not specify a date preference do not get any conversion.
I have been using Wikipedia for less than a month and this was an honest mistake. I do like to learn from my mistakes and I always welcome guidance from experienced users, but I do not appreciate the tone of your message ("What on earth were you up to ..."), particularly when you didn't even bother to get your facts right before criticising me (ISO and US dates). throup 17:18, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
Sorry I snapped, but I doubt that 1% of people have heard of ISO date formats. As a general rule, conventions which are familiar only to specialists or academics should not be used if there is an alternative as Wikipedia is aimed at the general population. Carina22 09:25, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
Apology accepted. As I said, I had misunderstood the guidelines and got a little over-zealous. I guess I learnt the hard way! I look forward to editing with you in the future. --throup 18:03, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Talk:Dixons

Before I reply to your comments at Talk:Dixons to continue the discussion, I wanted to take a step back and speak to you here. Reading through the discussion we have been having, I can't help but feel I have discovered a heated argument, which surprises me because all I want to do is produce a good quality article and I honestly believe this is what you would like to do to. The reason I began the conversation on the talk page is because I would rather we collaborate than work against each other and that is still what I would like to do. I hope you will respond to this message before we continue work on the article. --throup 19:03, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

The heat you detect isn't personal, it's just good old fashioned Dialectic. Ultimately I have a position on The Dixons article. You have another. We're discussing it. If I sound sharp it is perhaps because I am against the removal of the material to the talk page. However, I hope you'll grant that the most combative thing I could have done was to put it all back in straight away. (It would certainly have been easier than arguing the case for it). We do both want to see a good article. However, I fear we will always have different notions of what that means. Of course, something we should both remember is that, in time, the article will be the work of tens of hands and will gradually not resemble anything either of us currently conceives of.
In the meantime, though, I'm afraid I'm likely to throw as much weight behind my arguments as possible. That doesn't, of course, mean being ungracious. But I might occasionally slip into sarcasm if I feel one of your arguments is fallacious. Sorry about that. Regards, --bodnotbod 02:29, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
I'm ready now if you are :-). I've posted a reply at Talk:Dixons and I'm hoping we can get this article moving between us. --throup 14:17, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
I've replied over at Dixons Talk. In summary: please work away as you will, I'm preoccupied elsewhere at the moment. --bodnotbod 14:36, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
Hello. As I stated on Dixons Talk, I'm happy for you to expand the company history and any other sections as you see fit. I have no real interest in those aspects. So feel free to go ahead and build up the article. I notice that someone else, about a week ago, has inserted a mini criticism paragraph and added their view to the Talk page. --bodnotbod 19:24, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

Spoken word

Great work on Dalek - I can imagine it must have been very tedious, given the length of it! --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 23:40, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. It has its tedious moments, but it is a great way to learn about things. It's amazing how much more you take in from an article if you read it out loud.
I'm open to suggestions for my next spoken article. Let me know if you have any ideas. --throup 07:56, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Maybe after it passes (or fails) FA status, you can try looking at Doctor Who missing episodes. That one I think is informative enough. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 13:10, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Looks like a good one to go for. I was also considering Cybermen, seeing as they will be appearing in the new series. Anyway, I won't bother you too much with this as you appear to have become embroiled in World War III! --throup 14:24, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
Ah, it's not even a border incident. Cyberman might actually be a good idea, although I'm still not quite happy with the article when I compare it to Dalek. I really need to try and beef it up more, with real life production info and stuff, in preparation for next Spring. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 14:29, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

Deleting all of your images! / My images

Hi! I justed wanted to let you know it isn't anything personal that I've requested so many of your images to be deleted! All the best. --throup 00:23, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for putting some of my images up for deletion! Not all of them though, as you said on my talk page. The Windows Server 2003 logo (currently on that page) was replaced with my JPG version since someone had reuploaded your PNG file to a smaller size. Maybe if you put in more explanation on the summary of images it won't be uploaded again. -- Thorpe talk 08:48, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
What kind of explanation would you recommend? BTW as I said, it is nothing personal I ended up putting so many of yours up for deletion -- I was targetting Microsoft images, which it seems were usually added by you in the first place. --throup 09:24, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
Like this: Microsoft® Windows Server 2003 official logo, taken from Microsoft web site. [1]
"Microsoft, Windows and the Windows logo are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and/or other countries." -- Thorpe talk 09:51, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
OK, would you suggest copying the copyright statement from all websites I may take images from? BTW I've posted a comment at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion/2005 October 23 regarding these images. I'd be interested in your thoughts. --throup 10:08, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Fair use of logos

Is there any formal stipulation for image resolution and fair use? After seeing your comments at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion it got me thinking "what is low or high resolution"? For me, a high resolution logo would fit 7016x4961 pixels. I know that's rather precise; that is an A4 sheet at 600dpi. If I was after a low resolution, I'd plump for 1754x1240--the same at 150dpi. Now, I'm guessing for an online encyclopaedia (like Wikipedia) the standards will be different! But I then started thinking "if the Fair Use laws (of which I know very little) say we can only use low resolution images, surely there must be a definition of low and high resolution somewhere". So I started looking...

To cut a long story short, I didn't find one. But I did find the following at Wikipedia:Logos:

Reasonable diligence should be taken to ensure that the logo is accurate and has a high-quality appearance.

Suddenly my thinking was thrown off course. Is this saying that for logos (and logos only; this does not relate to any other form of fair use) we should actually be looking for high quality--therefore high resolution--images? And regardless of that answer, I'm still troubled with the definition of high and low resolution!

My reason for contacting you is simply because I assume you have some knowledge in the area. I would be very interested in your thoughts.  :-) --throup 17:56, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I'm afraid no formal definition exist (as far as I know). Some fair use templates mention "web-resolution" wich I take to mean something that looks good on screen when used in an article, but the policy pages just mention "low resolution" wich I agree is too vague. I raised the issue at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Fair use#Size of fair use images, and I suggest we take the logo size issue there as it seems to be the place to discuss all things fair use.
I didn't know about Wikipedia:Logos, I see your point. However I still think 200-300 pixels is more than enough to qualify as "accurate and has a high-quality appearance". That section goes on to say "Common sense says that a logo displayed prominently on the corporation's own website should be OK to use, because it represents that company's wishes about how the logo is presented on computer screens at typical screen resolutions". So screen resolutions, and last I checked the Windows logos did not take up 1800 pixels on the Microsoft website, but then it also says "Avoid resizing a logo". I'll mention the logo issue under Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Fair use#Size of fair use images, and see if anyone else will weigh in on the matter, I suggest we continue the discussion over there. --Sherool 21:44, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the prompt reply. I must say I had not discovered Wikipedia:Wikiproject Fair Use whilst I was researching! I have now added the talk page to my watchlist. Incidentally, don't feel concerned about causing a "dispute". If anything, your reaction on Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion has led me to develop an interest in this area. I look forward to seeing where this discussion goes. All the best. --throup 23:24, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Logos

Hi. You added the logo license to Image:BBC Radio Five Live.png. That license argues fair use for low-resolution images of logos. The image in question is massive and far too big either to qualify as low-resolution or to be used at its full size in an article. Regards Mark83 21:10, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

English Flag

Eh, you seem to be swapping the flag images around (see [2]) opposite to what's said in Commons:Image talk:England flag.svg, surely Image:Flag of England.svg is the one to be kept, and Image:England flag.svg is the redundant one? Well that's what it say on that talk page and the image...

"Flag of xxx.svg" does seem to be the standard naming convention.

wangi 12:59, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

That would because the message was written a clear half hour after I finished editing. I may aim for perfection, but I'm not psychic! :-)
I can see the logic of the naming convention, so I'm happy to go along with this if it is the concensus. When I discovered Image:Flag of England.svg I just thought it was easier to replace its three links instead of the hundreds on Image:England Flag.svg.
All the best. --throup 17:29, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Again, I apologize if I've created any really irritating problems. Premeditated Chaos 23:58, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:BBC Radio 1.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:BBC Radio 1.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Image:DSGi.png

Hello, Throup. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:DSGi.png) was found at the following location: User:Throup/sandbox/PC World. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 01:27, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:BBC_1Xtra.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:BBC_1Xtra.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. The Sunshine Man 16:15, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Image source problem with Image:BBC 7.png

Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:BBC 7.png. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:48, 12 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:49, 12 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Orphaned non-free media (Image:CBeebies.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:CBeebies.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 20:13, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:The Link.png

Thanks for uploading Image:The Link.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Image:Radio_Times.png

I have tagged Image:Radio_Times.png as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Thank you. Addhoc (talk) 23:56, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Boots.svg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Wanadoo.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. — neuro(talk) 19:11, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Elkjøp.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Elkjøp.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box.
