how to howto how-to

Unfortunately how-to is already in use. I dislike having templates that only differ by punctuation. Rich Farmbrough, 22:47, 18 July 2009 (UTC).

We might want to rethink the names of both, then. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 22:49, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

doc vs documentation

Can you please not change {{documentation}} to {{doc}} when editing templates? This is not an improvement. --- RockMFR 03:59, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

I don't really see the big problem (the same as when people insist on changing {{refs}} to {{reflist}} IMO) but I'll try to avoid changing it on existing templates in future if you want. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:49, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
I always like to get rid of any template redirects within templates so they don't show up in the transcluded template list when previewing the page. Makes it a bit easier to track down breakage/vandalism. --- RockMFR 01:33, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Hmmm. That sounds like it would be better fixed by some MediaWiki magic relating to how it displays transcluded templates on pages, rather than by removing useful shortcuts to oft-used templates. Better to optimise for editor productivity, no? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:04, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Asking for a sign...

Hi there TW, VASCO from Portugal here,

Nice to "wiki-meet" you. Having seen your post in Winston Bogarde's article (but not only for that), i worked thoroughly in the piece, adding several references and removing POV/WEASEL to the best of my abilities. In your view, is the "unreferenced" tag ready to be "set free"?

Keep up the good work, cheers,

VASCO AMARAL - --NothingButAGoodNothing (talk) 14:55, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Great work Vasco, thanks! Feel free to de-tag it. Glad to make your acquaintance; I've seen the good work you do for our football coverage. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 15:01, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Hey, why did you delete half of external links at 7-zip? SevenZipSharp is NOT a third-party software! It is a lgpl library and was so relevant that gave 100 clicks a week! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.222.225.146 (talk) 09:01, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

The external links section is not there to promote your random piece of software. I'll be removing this again; I would advise you to seek alternative ways of promoting the library in question to tacking it onto Wikipedia articles. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:07, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

{{Infobox River}}

Hi. Something in your recent edits to the template seem to have made ‘style="white-space: nowrap"’ appear literally in the output. See River Arno for an example. I wonder if you could look into it? Thanks! Ian Spackman (talk) 11:23, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Edits to Template:Elementbox

Nice clean-up work. Some changes in font size has caused some overflow issues with elements that have systematic names. See Template:Infobox ununoctium. If you have a chance, please try to fix. Otherwise I'll see what I can do this weekend. --mav (talk) 16:38, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Infobox Football biography Accessibility

May I remind you of Infobox Football biography#Accessibility and request your action in that regard? Thanks, Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 18:55, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

{{Infobox Football biography 2}} is still in testing but is quite well-liked and reasonably well-deployed now. The major barrier at this point is that I have no experience in requesting bot work, which will be required to roll it out. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 18:57, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
OK, thanks. May I suggest adding the optional parameters death_date, death_place, death_cause, resting_place and resting_place_coordinates, as used in {{Infobox Person}}? If you ask on WP:BOTREQ, all you need to do is make a typical manual conversion and link to the diff. You can ask that the Bot operator make, say, ten conversions, at random, so that you can check that nothing breaks, before making great numbers of changes. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 11:21, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
Is there a general agreement that bio infoboxes should always have all those fields? We've tried to avoid the inclusion of too much unnecessary data in the past. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 12:02, 25 July 2009 (UTC)
I think so; and that we should standardise on and reuse the core Infobox Person properties whenever possible. Besides, we have articles on a good many dead footballers (some with graves which are virtually tourist attractions)); and with time, that will only increase. The same parameters are used in other biographical infoboxes, too: for example {{Infobox officeholder}}. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 20:54, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

re: memoryalpha

I've replied at the template's talk page. As the page was protected because it was in high use, not because of any editing dispute, I do not agree I was misusing my admin-bit. Feel free to ask for a third opinion if you disagree. —Ruud 16:05, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Regardless of the reason for the lock, admins are not exempted from the process by which protected templates are edited. It wasn't uncontroversial, so it shouldn't have been done without discussion. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 16:25, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
On a certain level you are of course entirely right. Practically speaking, however, discussing every potentially controversial change (this can only really be determined in hindsight) would slow editing down enormously. That why we have the bold-revert-discuss cycle. I felt that the original change to use {{wikia}} was rather bold (the editor probably not realizing that it would create a redirecting URL and external link where an interlink was), I reverted, you disagreed with my revert and now we can take the time to discuss this. —Ruud 17:05, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

"weaselly rant"

I'd suggest you reword that. Yworo (talk) 17:45, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

"Weaselly" meaning "of or pertaining to weasel words, such as "offensive to some" where those "some" are an implied but anonymous external party. "Rant" meaning "irrational emotional outburst". What would you suggest I reword it to? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 18:09, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
"note" Yworo (talk) 18:10, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Unilaterally moving a page and then adding one's rationale in all-uppercase because it keeps getting moved back very much suggests that the current wording is a more accurate portrayal. Don't let that you happen to agree with the outcome affect your perception of how it was effected. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 18:12, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Seems like a form of personal attack to me. Yworo (talk) 18:18, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Forgive me if I'm not especially concerned with feigned outrage, especially third-party feigned outrage. You'd be better addressing the arguments than trying to make this personal. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 18:21, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I'm not outraged, I just think it was uncool. Now that I see that you are simply predisposed to exaggerate, I guess I'll just ignore your exaggerations. Yworo (talk) 19:12, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Stub image size

I haven't responded to a lot recently, a lot of work in the real world. The images are at a standard size of 35 px for all of the stub templates. I standardized on this image size because in most cases it balances out the need to know what the image represents verses the space it takes up on the page. Their are a few images that do not work well, but in most cases 35 px is dead on. --Jeremy (blah blahI did it!) 20:19, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Was this discussed and agreed upon anywhere? 35px is not a general standard size for stub icons, especially not when they're portrait aspect. I've seen a large number of food-related stub templates which use images where the height is twice or more the width, which results in abnormally tall stub templates at 35px. Stub icons are not mandatory; they should ideally be omitted if they aren't clear at the default size, which is 40x30px. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 20:23, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
I've replaced the image at {{drink-stub}} with a squarer one which looks fine at the default width. This is the best solution in general IMO. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 20:26, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Template:Infobox Scottish island

No doubt your tidying up has value, although I'm afraid I am insufficiently clued up on template syntax to know what or how. I do however notice that the map now isn't centred on the transcluded pages. If you could have a look at this I'd be grateful. Ben MacDui 18:06, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

I can't duplicate this, I'm afraid; the code should centre the map okay. Any particular article? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 11:54, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
It is all of 'em - at least that I've looked so far. I have tried it with OS X plus Firefox and Safari and in Beta mode and its the same in all three modes - the map is off to the left-hand side. If you can't duplicate it I'll drop a note at WP:ISLET and ask for comments. Ben MacDui 13:36, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Same problem since your recent edit. The image needs to be able to display a marker for the location. This means that the western islands, such as Hirta are worst, with the marker overflowing into the surrounding page. Returning to the previous width may help. Finavon (talk) 13:47, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Somehow Boreray, St Kilda infobox is forced to be wider (in MSIE7, but not Firefox). That makes the map and marker look fine. Finavon (talk) 13:55, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Indeed; the width thing is just a hack because the method used to display the marker doesn't take the bounding table's width into effect. I still can't see why the map won't centre in the first place, but I've rolled back my changes until such point as I can get it working. Sorry for the messup. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 14:47, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Nae probs - thanks for your prompt attention. Ben MacDui 16:43, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm not having the problem but while someone is making changes to the template, would it be possible to add a |Gaelic Pronuciation= line under |Gaelic name=? Having the IPA for Gaelic place names in the main text body right after the header is rather cumbersome but it sits quite nicely in the infobox. It would actually be handy in all the Scottish island/mountain/settlement infoboxes but I haven't gotten round to suggesting it. Akerbeltz (talk) 15:56, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
I'll try this asap and if necessary continue the discussion the template talk page. Ben MacDui 16:43, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Dear Thumperward/Chris (it's not really clear you know), I wonder if we could enlist your help with two (I hope) minor issues on the template that have just emerged. Firstly, as you can see on the talk page we have made the Gaelic name field optional as lots of the Northern Isles e.g Unst, Shapinsay don't have one. However, this leaves blank space above the Norse name. Can this be suppressed? Secondly, I don't understand where the location of the map that appears as standard is located. There is now a discussion at WT:SCO about changing the standard map used in Infobox UK for Scottish articles and I'd like us to have a choice for the island infobox regardless of the outcome there. Can you tell me how we can achieve this and retain the ability to have the location marked by the red spot? Any assistance much appreciated. Ben MacDui 19:44, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

I don't see what's not clear about it: I log in using my user name (because I feel odd using my real name for a computer login), but sign my posts with my real name (because I feel odd signing something with a pseudonym). Anyway, the Gaelic code is now fully conditional and the template logic had been cleaned up without breaking the map this time. As for where the map comes from, it's embedded in the {{Location map Scotland}} template, which is called by {{location map}} in the islands template code. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 11:32, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't know if it's only my machine but the IPA has now disappeared completely (see Pabbay, Harris for example). Akerbeltz (talk) 12:12, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Whoops. Fixed; sorry about that. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 12:35, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Ah back now. Thanks for all the help! Looks much better there than in the header, what with the Gaelic name, the IPA and occasionally IPA for the Scots, it was turning into a mini treatise in phonology ;) Akerbeltz (talk) 12:44, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
Many thanks and apologies re the name - I was just attempting to be light-hearted - and I am the one to talk. Cheers. Ben MacDui 21:12, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Infobox artwork

Hello,

I see you made some changes to the {{Artwork}} template recently. In my histmerge work, I came across this page; are the errors showing there a result of your changes? If so, could I talk you into fixing it? Thanks, Mikaey, Devil's advocate 22:29, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

It's been pointed out on the template talk page that something seems to have broken somewhere in Wikipedia (either at the MediaWiki stage, or somewhere down the template chain) to break the inches/cm conversion logic in the template. For now, I've rolled back to an earlier version which works until I can figure out what's broken. Sorry for the damage. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 22:41, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
