Original page (Template:Victoria Livery color) was nomination for deletion on 30 May 2024. Moved contents here as a back up if they are needed in the future. --ThylacineHunter (talk) 03:25, 31 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

How can I also define text colours

edit

For use in a table, need to be able to define the colour of background and colour of text. Trainsofvictoria (talk) 09:25, 10 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

The template currently does nothing but produce the color code. It doesn't do any genuine formatting of its own. You could, in the same way in which you define the color codes for the backgrounds, also define color codes for the text, e.g. like this:
| MetroText = FFFFFF
Then you can use it as follows:

{| class="wikitable"
!Colour scheme !!Background hexadecimal !!Text hexadecimal !! !!
|-
|style="background: #{{User:ThylacineHunter/Victoria Livery color|Metro}}; color: #{{User:ThylacineHunter/Victoria Livery color|MetroText}}" | Metro
|{{User:ThylacineHunter/Victoria Livery color|Metro}}
|{{User:ThylacineHunter/Victoria Livery color|MetroText}}
| <nowiki>#{{User:ThylacineHunter/Victoria Livery color|Metro}}</nowiki>
| <nowiki>#{{User:ThylacineHunter/Victoria Livery color|MetroText}}</nowiki>
|}

That will give:
Colour scheme Background hexadecimal Text hexadecimal
Metro style="background: #1E90FF; color: #000000" FFFFFF #{{User:ThylacineHunter/Victoria Livery color|Metro}} {{User:ThylacineHunter/Victoria Livery color|MetroText}}
Otherwise you'd have to re-do the template in its entirety to make it actually produce the formatting instead of just the codes. Huon (talk) 12:14, 10 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

How would I go about redoing the template? (I originally just copied it from one the did train line colours)
I also want to have different text in each cell (eg: "ACN1" & "BN2" in vl1 style, then another row "ACN1" in vl2 and "BN2" in vlp1)

It would probably be easier to start over from scratch than to try and modify this template. This template is meant to produce a color code as output - it turns the parameter "VR Maroon" into "990000". That's all. If you want it to fully format text, you'd want to have the output be the full style="background: #990000; color: yellow" or something like that, depending on how, exactly, the template is meant to be used. Its use will then be different from that of whatever template it's based on, and it may not work in all the contexts where the other template works (e.g. not in infoboxes, I'd expect). Please also note that some color combinations are very difficult to read (black on dark brown?), and it might be even worse for people with color blindness issues. I don't understand what you mean by "different text in each cell"; the template currently doesn't produce or affect text at all. If you want different background and text colors in different parts of one cell, the easiest way would likely be to create a sub-table with independently colored cells. If you want to change only text color, that may be easier: Help:Using colours explains how you can override text color. Huon (talk) 21:47, 18 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
