- The arbitration case request Geschichte has been automatically closed after a 3 month suspension of the case.
- You can vote for candidates in the 2022 Board of Trustees elections from 16 August to 30 August. Two community elected seats are up for election.

The name "Turkey"
Hi! You changed the name "Turkey" to the native Turkish spelling in an article. While it may be the new Turkish-government-endorsed name of Turkey in the English language, it is not the one we use here in the English-language Wikipedia: please see WP:COMMONNAME for the relevant policy. I've fixed your edit; could you please update your table-generation code so that it follows the English Wikipedia convention for this? — The Anome (talk) 10:35, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hey @The Anome! Long time no see! Definitely not intentional, the issue arises from the UN always using the official names (Côte d'Ivoire, Russian Federation, Brunei Darussalam etc) so a good 10% or so needs to be changed manually when importing the data from the new report. Just missed Turkey apparently.
- I didn't know we had an edit filter for this though! If this is successful I feel it may be useful to expand to more country names since there are a lot of them with variants that usually shouldn't be used. --Trialpears (talk) 10:56, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
- Hi! We probably need a mapping table of official name -> COMMONNAME. Since enwiki country articles use the WP:COMMONNAME, by policy, maybe this mapping could be pulled from Wikidata with a SPARQL query. — The Anome (talk) 11:24, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
- I think the following from the HDI article is reasonably comprehensive when talking about only official short names. If we start talking about long names we will get a large majority of countries even if noone uses the long names like Kingdom of Sweden.
- Hong Kong SAR -> Hong Kong (I've seen many variations here and not as official because China)
- Macau SAR -> Macau (same here)
- Republic of China -> Taiwan (also "Chinese Taipei" and the debated status)
- Republic of Korea -> South Korea
- Türkiye -> Turkey
- Brunei Darussalam -> Brunei
- Russian Federation -> Russia
- Islamic Republic of Iran -> Iran
- Republic of Moldova -> Moldova
- State of Palestine -> Palestine
- Viet Nam -> Vietnam
- Plurinational State of Bolivia -> Bolivia
- Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela -> Venezuela
- Cabo Verde -> Cape Verde
- Federated States of Micronesia -> Micronesia
- Lao People’s Democratic Republic -> Laos
- Timor-Leste -> East Timor
- Kingdom of Eswatini -> Eswatini (This name change somehow seems to have went smoothly maybe because it's a less well known country)
- Syrian Arab Republic -> Syria
- Côte d’Ivoire -> Ivory Coast
- United Republic of Tanzania -> Tanzania
- Democratic People’s Republic of Korea -> North Korea.
- Also gotta mention Congo. Apparently the official short name of Republic of the Congo is simply Congo which will never create confusion while the Democratic Republic of the Congo doesn't have a short name.
- This page seems to be essentially complete with both short and long names (essentially because it looks slightly outdated with Swaziland and no mention of Czechia). www
.un .int /protocol /sites /www .un .int /files /Protocol%20and%20Liaison%20Service /officialnamesofcountries .pdf. --Trialpears (talk) 11:59, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

Growth team newsletter #22
Welcome to the twenty-second newsletter from the Growth team!
Newcomers tasks reach the 500,000 edits milestone — more data publicly available
As of the last week of June 2022, the newcomers of the world have completed over 500,000 newcomer tasks. In other words, newcomers have made over half a million Wikipedia edits via Growth’s “Suggested Edits” module.
- About 30% of those edits were completed on mobile devices.
- Usage continues to increase; in June 2022 almost 50,000 newcomer tasks were completed.
We have added some new data to Grafana. You can now check the number of edits and reverts by task types, or the number of questions asked to mentors. You can filter the data by wiki.
If you have any questions, or there is more data you want access to, please let us know.
Ongoing projects and explorations
We are continuing our work on our new project, Positive Reinforcement. User testing of initial Positive Reinforcement designs was just completed. Interviews were conducted in Arabic, English, and Spanish. The outcome has been published on the Positive Reinforcement page. We are now utilizing user testing feedback along with prior community feedback to iterate and improve designs.
We are exploring the idea of a Copy Edit structured task. We have tested copy edits in Wikipedia articles for arwiki, bnwiki, cswiki, eswiki (Growth pilot-wikis) and enwiki with two different methods: LanguageTool and Hunspell. We will share more details here and on the associated Copy Edit page once the evaluation is complete.
Add an image was utilized at GLAM events in Argentina, Mexico, and Chile. For an overview of what was learned from these events, read: #1Pic1Article I: how Latin American heritage experts added images to Wikipedia (in English).
Experiments analysis
Add a Link Experiment Analysis has been published. The most important points are:
- Newcomers who get the Add a Link structured task are more likely to be activated (i.e. make a constructive first article edit).
- They are also more likely to be retained (i.e. come back and make another constructive article edit on a different day).
- The feature also increases edit volume (i.e. the number of constructive edits made across the first couple weeks), while at the same time improving edit quality (i.e. the likelihood that the newcomer's edits aren't reverted).
Newcomer task edit type analysis has been published.
- Communities had expressed concern that newcomers whose initial edits were structured tasks wouldn’t go on to learn how to complete more difficult tasks. The Growth team data scientist conducted a Newcomer task edit type analysis to see if this was indeed the case.
- Results from analysis indicate that this likely isn’t a significant concern. More than 70% of users who start with the easy task "Add a link" also make another task type. Read the full analysis and methodology here.
News for mentors
A new system for the mentors list
The configuration of the mentors list will change over the next weeks. In the future, mentors will sign up, edit their mentor description and quit using Special:MentorDashboard. This new system will make the development of new features for mentors much easier.
At the moment, the mentor list is a simple page anyone can edit, unless it’s protected. With the new page, mentors will be able to edit only their own description, while administrators will be able to edit the entire mentors' list if needed.
The deployment will happen first at the pilot wikis, then at all wikis. Existing lists of mentors will be automatically converted, no action will be needed from the mentors. [18][19]
Mentors will be informed about the next steps soon, by a message posted on the talk page of existing Mentor lists.
Learn more about this new structured page on mediawiki.org.
A tip for mentors
Did you know that mentors can filter their mentees' changes at Special:MentorDashboard (and star the ones that require attention)? This feature helps to keep an eye on newcomers' edits, helping mentors to fix minor details, and encourage them if necessary.
And did you know that mentors have special filters to highlight their mentees' edits at Special:RecentChanges? Look for the following filters in RecentChanges: Your starred mentees, Your unstarred mentees.
Other improvements
Some improvements will be made to the mentor dashboard in the coming weeks:
- While we now offer some options for mentors to take a break, the option to quit mentoring was not easy to find. This will be improved. [20]
- Mentors at wikis using FlaggedRevisions will have a way to discover their mentees' pending edits. [21]
- Dashboard discovery for new mentors will be improved. [22]
Recent changes and fixed bugs
- We moved to a new Image Suggestions API. This new API will allow us to deploy Add an Image to more wikis. [23]
- Starting September 19, a few more wikis now offer Add an image to newcomers. These wikis are Greek Wikipedia, Polish Wikipedia, Chinese Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia. [24]
- Add an image has been disabled for a few days due to technical issue. "Add an image" added a blank line instead of an image. This has been fixed. [25]
- In order to know if Special:EditGrowthConfig is used by communities, we now instrument page loads and saves of configuration. [26]

Administrators' newsletter – October 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2022).
- Following an RfC, consensus was found that if the rationale for a block depends on information that is not available to all administrators, that information should be sent to the Arbitration Committee, a checkuser or an oversighter for action (as applicable, per ArbCom's recent updated guidance) instead of the administrator making the block.
- Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.
- Community comment on the revised Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines is requested until 8 October.
- The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. If you wish to help out at AFC, enable AFCH by navigating to Preferences → Gadgets and checking the "Yet Another AfC Helper Script" box.
- Remedy 8.1 of the Muhammad images case will be rescinded 1 November following a motion.
- A modification to the deletion RfC remedy in the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been made to reaffirm the independence of the RfC and allow the moderators to split the RfC in two.
- The second phase of the 2021-22 Discretionary Sanctions Review closes 3 October.
- An administrator's account was recently compromised. Administrators are encouraged to check that their passwords are secure, and reminded that ArbCom reserves the right to not restore adminship in cases of poor account security. You can also use two-factor authentication (2FA) to provide an extra level of security.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections open 2 October and close 8 October.
- You are invited to comment on candidates in the 2022 CUOS appointments process.
- An RfC is open to discuss whether to make Vector 2022 the default skin on desktop.

Trouble with pages being drastically modified
Hello,
There seem to be some problems on the List of countries by GDP (nominal) per capita and List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita pages. A user called Groverlynn wishes to drastically alter the format of these articles & refuses to have the latest IMF data, for this year, shown -- insisting it is wrong & only previous years should be used instead... other users have objected to these unilateral decisions, but to no avail. Perhaps someone can intervene?
Thank you! Dhyana b (talk) 23:01, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Question from The Eighth Dimensions (09:49, 29 October 2022)
hello i am interested in speaking about potentailly offering my time to assist with anything cause i would like to get to know some people online and also show some of my skills all self taught and learned free on the internet. --kellyiskey The Eighth Dimensions (talk) 09:49, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @The Eighth Dimensions! I'm happy to hear you want to start editing Wikipedia! There are lots of ways to help out but I would recommend starting out by choosing a subject you're interested in and improve articles about it. As a Swede I found subjects related to my country a great starting point. Some problems you can fix are mentioned in maintenance banners on top of the article or in [citation needed] tags in the text. If you see such message there's usually a link to some instructions. You may also find that something is missing from an article in which case you can look for sources that talk about it and add information based on the sources. If you want to do this or fix [citation needed] tags I would recommend reading our introduction to referencing.
- I also want to say congrats on learning English! It's not easy and I hope you can learn a lot from helping out here. One piece of feedback though: Anything you write in articles should use punctuation marks (mainly .) and capitalization at the start of sentences (A instead of a). It's very possible that you get some comments about your English and if so you should listen to it.
- If you have more questions I'm happy to help out and I suspect that I've been in a similar situation to you with regards to improving my English online even though it was quite some time ago. --Trialpears (talk) 23:40, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
Question from Seth Moorhead (14:11, 29 October 2022)
Hello. I would like to provide you with a new definition of GRAVITY. The current definition should be updated. it is not an attraction of bodies but seems to be. It is the pressure generated by all the rays emitted by all the stars. --Seth Moorhead (talk) 14:11, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hey @Seth Moorhead. I'm not really sure if you're serious or not. In case your not I would recommend leaving Wikipedia, we're not known for being fun to troll and have better stuff to do.
- In case you are serious I can say that your definition isn't the generally accepted explanation. You may have found someone that says something like you claim, but to add new information to Wikipedia you need a reliable source for it and I suspect you do not. As a physics student I feel like I have to add that your definition very much rhymes with some actual well established science such as the pressure generated by gravity is the same as the pressure generated by the light emitted by a star inside of said star and that you can describe stars curving spacetime as them exerting a pressure on said spacetime. --Trialpears (talk) 23:48, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

Question from 3d.nftart (18:42, 25 October 2022)
Hi @Trialpears
I hope you are good!
A discussion has been created about my article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Karl_Lagasse
I have been working on some points to argue into the discussion the notability of the contemporary artist: Karl Lagasse.
The problem now is that someone has deleted the article and I didn't have the chance to answer the comments on the discussion page.
I would appreciate it if you can provide more information on how to recover the article or if I can still argue my points in order to recover it.
Looking forward to hearing from you, 3d.nftart --3d.nftart (talk) 18:42, 25 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hello @3d.nftart! I'm sorry that you couldn't make your arguments heard. I can't do much personally, except give you the contents of the page if you want, but you could always hear with the closing admin Premeditated Chaos on her talk page. If she thinks reopening the discussion is warranted she can do that. --Trialpears (talk) 16:08, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
- I don't. I think the previous discussion was thorough and conclusive. ♠PMC♠ (talk) 20:38, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Premeditated Chaos
- I am trying to do my best and I would like to ask you the favor of opening again the discussion since I have been preparing some points to argue into it the notability of the artist: Karl Lagasse
- I did not notice when the problem started on Wikipedia, I am not here 24/7 and when I realized the problem I started working on the points to argue, the problem was when I was ready to answer the discussion, it had been already closed and the article eliminated.
- I am trying to improve all the feedback that I received in the article and I would like to have the opportunity to present my points.
- Can you give me some advice on how to resolve this issue in a constructive matter instead of saying nothing can be done?
- If it helps I can share with you additional information and discussion points so you can review them.
- Looking forward from you answer, @3d.nftart 3d.nftart (talk) 18:36, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
- I will not be reopening the discussion. It was extremely thorough and remained open for three weeks, which is more than enough time for a community consensus to form. In particular, the detailed source analysis (at the AfD, click the little "show" button that's under the bold text "Source assessment table" to see it) showed that none of the extant coverage was suitable for supporting a claim to notability, for various reasons.
- You're free to work on a draft of the page in draftspace at Draft:Karl Lagasse if you think you have other sources that support a claim to notability. ♠PMC♠ (talk) 21:17, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
- I don't. I think the previous discussion was thorough and conclusive. ♠PMC♠ (talk) 20:38, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
