editWelcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "SamoanStudiesDept", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because it obviously references a group of people. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 23:41, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
Hi there, The username does not violate as it is used by our Samoan Studies Department at the National University of Samoa to verify all articles pertaining to our culture and history on Wikipedia as well as ensuring all articles regarding Samoa are verified by Pacific and Samoa scholarly sources. Furthermore, we ensure the integrity of the articles by monitoring them and ensuring no vandalism - particularly of sensitive cultural matters - takes place. I hope this satisfies your query. Thank you.
- Sorry, it does not: you cannot have a username that doesn't clearly point to there being one individual user. Please read the actual policy, Wikipedia:Username policy, and propose a different name. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 01:01, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Your username is the only reason for this block. You are welcome to choose a new username (see below) and continue editing.A username should not be promotional, appear to represent a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account. However, you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87". You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:
- Adding
{{unblock-un|your new username here}}
below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" on their talk page. - At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
- Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
- Adding
{{unblock|Your reason here}}
below this notice, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. Drmies (talk) 16:29, 17 February 2020 (UTC)- I wish you had taken me seriously. Yesterday, all you had to do was propose a name that doesn't violate our policy and I would have found someone to rename your account. Now, after you chose to ignore my remark and kept on editing, you will need to propose a name here, while filing an unblock request. It is not that difficult but it is one more hoop to jump through, costing you, me, and another admin more time. Drmies (talk) 16:32, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Mistaken move
editI reverted your move of Tufuga Efi. Please read MOS:HONORIFIC, and also WP:COMMONNAME. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:27, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks David. His Highness has not been known by Tufuga Efi since the late 1970s. He is widely known as Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi. A google search will prove this to be so. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vaafusuaga Samalaulu Fonoti (talk • contribs) 21:32, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- If that is so, I suggest that you use the article's talk page to propose a change of the article's name. --David Biddulph (talk) 22:31, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
- You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you disrupt Wikipedia, as you did at Tufuga Efi. - You were told last time that your move is contrary to WP:HONORIFIC, and that if you wanted to change the article's name you needed to use the article's talk page to propose the move. Moving again without doing so was a disruptive edit, repeat of which would be liable to get you blocked. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:25, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
David, I have already done so. There have been no responses in opposition to this. How long before it is changed? It is an affront to have an article about a prominent member of our family and country here when his name is not accurate. Do we have to wait for people to respond or can we change it to what is name actually is? It is not a violation of WP:HONORIFIC because unlike western titles like 'dame', 'sir' etc, leaders in Polynesian societies take titles as their names when they are conferred. If not, then not only is this definition void of any real understanding of the complexities of Samoan culture, but you would have to change his name completely because by that logic, then "Tupuola" would also be classed as 'honorific' as that is also a chiefly title. If you need proof, there are numerous publications, scholarly articles and media releases with his correct full name on it. Using his actual name that we all know is common sense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vaafusuaga Samalaulu Fonoti (talk • contribs) 12:38, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
- I now see that you had put a message at the top of the article talk page. Nobody would have seen it there, because new topics go at the foot of a talk page. I've moved your message there to give readers a chance to notice it. I suggest that you leave it for at least a week, then if nobody objects you could be justified in moving it. Please remember to include a WP:signature at the end of your messages on talk pages, either by using the signature icon or by ending with 4 tildes

Wikipedia and copyright
editHello Vaafusuaga Samalaulu Fonoti, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your additions to History of Samoa have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 12:23, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

editYour addition to Tutuila has been removed in whole or in part, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. If you are the copyright holder, please read Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on uploading your material to Wikipedia. For legal reasons, Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted material, including text or images from print publications or from other websites, without an appropriate and verifiable license. All such contributions will be deleted. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of content, such as sentences or images—you must write using your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously, and persistent violators of our copyright policy will be blocked from editing. See Wikipedia:Copying text from other sources for more information. — Diannaa (talk) 11:35, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi - what is the violation?? I cannot see it.
Recent edit reversion
editIn this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.
I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.S Philbrick(Talk) 11:16, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
I am unable to view the summary. What did you change?
Article names
editHello. I see you've moved a few biographies recently to titles that are their full name. However, the titles should be whatever the person's most common name is in English – this is not necessarily their full name. Their full name only needs to appear in the first sentence of the article about them. Cheers, Number 57 20:43, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
- See the people section of WP:UCRN – for example the article is at Bill Clinton, not William Jefferson Clinton. Regarding your moves, the full title Mata'afa Lealaisalanoa Muliufi is rarely used. Similarly, The Mau Movement - O le Mau is not the common name. I have reverted both these moves. Number 57 11:25, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi, that is incorrect. In Samoa, he is NOT known as Mataafa Muliufi. He is known as Mataafa Lealaisalanoa (or Salanoa) Muliufi. Those of us who are Samoan and who live here never address him without including Lealaisalanoa (or Salanoa) as it removes an integral part of who he is - a chief of BOTH Falefa (Salanoa) and Amaile/Lotofaga (Mataafa). Please correct this.

Matai titles
editHi there, I have noticed in the past, that you have pointed out that Matai titles are incorporated into the names of the Matai. I was wondering if you had any sources to confirm this.
Thanks, --N Panama 84534 22:09, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Hi, I'm not sure I understand your question. Could you please clarify? Thanks :)
No problem. My question is, when an individual attains a Matai title is that the equivalent of someone gaining the title of ‘sir’? Or does that Matai title become part of that individual’s name?
Thanks, --N Panama 84534 22:58, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
Ahh ok I see, no worries.
No it is not the equivalent of "sir". The matai title becomes your name and becomes the most important name you hold.
When somebody is addressed, the equivalent of "sir" is "Lau Afioga","Lau Susuga" or "Lau Tofā." These will almost always preface the matai of the person you are addressing, so for example, If your name is Naomi Mata'afa and your matai is Fiame, you would address that person as "Lau Afioga" (equivalent to "sir", "hon", "highness" etc) followed by their full name which is now inclusive of their matai i.e. "Fiame Naomi Mata'afa."
Hope this helps!
Perfect, thank you! :) --N Panama 84534 23:51, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Hi again, do you have any sources that you could provide to confirm this? --N Panama 84534 02:22, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
Hi - sorry I didn’t see your message.
No I’m not aware of any written sources. But ask any Samoan and they can confirm this for you. It’s an integral part of our culture :) Vaafusuaga Samalaulu Fonoti (talk) 08:34, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
