Rangers.png
editHello, you had asked me why the image removed was deleted when a fair use rationale was provided. The fair use rationale has to be not only provided, but also valid. Here are the factors that determine fair use (from the relevant wiki page:)
1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; 2. the nature of the copyrighted work; 3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and 4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
Use of the entire logo definitely fails the third prong of the test. Fair use is usually reserved for use of a small portion of a copyrighted work. It evolved in order to allow book reviewers to quote small passages of books. It would almost never be fair use to reproduce, without the copyright holder's consent, the entire copyrighted work. Thanks. Larry Dunn 20:48, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Bizarre
editYou've just been party to the strangest occurrence I've had on Wikipedia. I was doing exactly the same edit to the Rangers F.C. internationalists page (converting the nations into sections).
That aside, I think we should introduce one of these in place of the current table of contents. - Dudesleeper · Talk 18:41, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
- Great minds and that. Which one would be most suitable for the article do you think? WATP (talk) • (contribs) 18:50, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
- I'm quite partial to the US states one, obviously changing to nations instead. - Dudesleeper · Talk 19:25, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, looks good. At risk of making a mess of it, I'll leave you to do the honours of inserting it. ;) WATP (talk) • (contribs) 19:29, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
- Touché. I'm actually off out, but if you haven't built up the courage upon my return, I'll gladly balls it up instead. - Dudesleeper · Talk 19:31, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, not going yet, but I can't be arsed doing that yet. A couple of other things on my to-do list need attention first. - Dudesleeper · Talk 19:41, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
- Made a start on my sandbox, still needing refined though. WATP (talk) • (contribs) 19:45, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
- Done, and added. I have no idea if it should be made into a template or anything, but it's there and it works/seems to work. WATP (talk) • (contribs) 19:52, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Non-free use disputed for Image:East Timor FA.gif
editThis file may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:East Timor FA.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 02:47, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Someone To Drive You Home.jpg
editThanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Someone To Drive You Home.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:59, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

editThanks for all the updates to the New Articles page you've been doing. I was mid-update myself to the last set of results, when you beat me to updating the page. It was good to see that your prunings matched mine. It's often difficult to prune out the "was born or made in Scotland, or had a dog who lived there" entries from the real ones :-) Anyway, keep up the good work. Cheers. --Cactus.man ✍ 18:55, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
- Yep, it's a problem with the regexp parameters. I'm no expert myself which is why I asked for some regexp gurus in my original postings. There's also
/\[\[\s*Category:[^\]\|]*Scot/ , /Nova\sScotia/ -3 /\WCanad(a|ian)/ -3 /\WUSA\W/ -3 /America/ -3 /Australia/
- You've probably noticed a few Canadian / American / Australian politician and other type entries appearing. This can all be fine tuned, but I'm not the guy to do it. Oh well, heading off to find a copy of Regexp for Dummies for better understanding. -- Cactus.man ✍ 19:17, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

When you get a chance, would you mind checking the above's article against this profile at the Scottish FA? My Blackpool book doesn't mention his being a Scot, but the Spartacus Educational link in his article does (and that he was an international). Thing is, I can't seem to get his Kilmarnock career (of multiple seasons, mentioned in the Scottish FA profile) to jog with his career at other clubs. I shortened his career at New Brighton Tower in order to get at least one season with Kilmarnock in, but now I'm not even sure it's the same player. Happen to have any more material or guidance? - Dudesleeper · Talk 11:04, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the input. I made two (1, 2) separate articles. Since there's no mention of either Blackpool or Blackburn in the former's SFA profile, we must assume they are different players, both of Scottish birth. My next job is to find out who else George Anderson played for. - Dudesleeper · Talk 14:43, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

fitba' (fit-baw) Dialect, chiefly Scot. -n. (m) the beautiful game. 2. (f) stupid game involving twenty-two grown men (and three officials of dubious parentage and eyesight) kicking a lump of leather around a field, often sparking irrational behaviour, bad language, and blind devotion to a team or player, to the detriment of normal marital relations. Your revert of an edit to Paul Gascoigne
editAs one experienced Wikipedian to another, I was disappointed to note your use of the pop-ups facility to revert this edit. The pop-up facility is for vandalism. The editor concerned is not a vandal, but a new editor who evidently does not know the rules. Per WP:BITE I suggest a friendly user warning should have been given. Viewfinder 19:31, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your message. I don't see the problem with my edit. I don't see anything here saying it is only for vandalism, and neither does the automatic edit summary provided by popups mention vandalism (which it would be fair to argue the original edit - "...Gazza is a bastard..." - was). I was using simply as a speedy method of reverting an edit which clearly did not belong on Wikipedia. With regards to the editor not being a vandal - I'd say his edits up to the point of my revert meet my definition of vandalism. WATP (talk) • (contribs) 19:41, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Agreed that the comment did not belong on Wikipedia. But note carefully the context of "bastard"; it was the editor's summary of how he sees the public's attitude. He was trying to defend Gazza, and if he has posted to a blog I would have found his contribution commendable. I studied that user's edits too and while they are clearly POV pushing, I think this is still a case of WP:AGF. Viewfinder 20:18, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- I don't particularly think that any part of that edit was encyclopedic to an extent that it should have been included. If you disagree, feel free to revert me. WATP (talk) • (contribs) 20:20, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi
editHello WATP,
Sorry for the intrusion, I just wondered if you regularly contribute to articles beyond Scottish football? You're obviously an advanced editor, but what caught my eye was your cultural stance on Scotland and its relationship within the United Kingdom. No problem if its not your thing, but there is alot of activity and debate at the moment regarding the best approach to a whole multitude of issues surrounding this topic. STALKER WARNING
editPlease stop. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, as you did to my talk page , you will be blocked from editing.
You really should get out more and continuing to fill up my talk page with stuff from months ago will be seen as harrasment.
- Believe it or not, the user really does have the right to remove warnings from their talk page. I can't find exactly where it says it, but trust me, it does. They should probably archive it, but what they're doing is perfectly fine, so please stop reverting. Ok? Gscshoyru 19:15, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
Thank you Gscshoyru . Unfortunately, i believe this stalker has added me to a watch list of his so i'll need to abandon my identity to create another. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Longkeys (talk • contribs) 19:22, August 28, 2007 (UTC)

Mc/Mac
editIt was established that for auditing/counting articles purposes names starting with "Mc" must be "Mac" on defaultsort/categories; also "O'H" (for example) should be "Oh". See Martin McGuinness article for note to this effect. I though it had already been established as protocol. Please do not rv anymore as I know I am right. Ontheveldt 19:39, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your understanding. How can we get the word out to the wider Wikipedia community re the above?

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Mylo.jpg)
editThanks for uploading Image:Mylo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 04:10, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
