Hi Martin,

Thanks for the ping. I would be glad to talk about WP as used for academic collaboration (since academia, like WP is theoretically about the creation of trustworthy, free knowledge, relying heavily on references and 'history' and the power of thousands of eyes). Will think on a specific topic. Yes, I'll be busy, but an excuse to get out to Buffalo isn't a bad thing; I used to live in upstate NY. Perhaps, as you say, a technical discussion of ways that collaboration is facilitated here (as opposed to in more traditional venues) would be grand.

Also, we should start getting a few 1.0 subprojects up and running this and next week, using the impetus from the USA Today article... perhaps a tagging-campaign, a tie-in with two fact-checking wikiprojects, a "1000-article quality initiative" for the list-of-must-have-articles; even a "see what de-and-fr-and-ja are doing about quality control" project [they have some cool things going on].

Folic Acid

Hi Martin, I'm afraid I don't know much about this chemical, probably less than you. I have not studied vitamins. Nevertheless, I had a look at it and came up with some suggestions. It seems as though the two articles that have been merged are Folic acid as a chemical and Folic acid as a nutrition supplement. Maybe this can be split into two articles. I would guess that most people would know folic acid as the tablets you see in the supermarket, so one article could cover that, and have a history of how it was discovered to be useful etc. and maybe some light chemistry/biology. And the other could be specifically the chemistry of the compound. A bit like how Water is now. Borb 22:59, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

Toluene

Hi Bartimaeus, I just saw your addition to toluene. I am concerned that this skews the article very heavily towards one minor technical aspect related to toluene. Speaking as an organic chemistry professor, I could add fifty pages of content with hundreds of references to reactions, properties, etc. of toluene. However I realise that this sort of thing is much too specialised for a general article that aims to give an overview of toluene. Could I ask you to consider reducing your section to a couple of sentences and merging it into the "Precautions and metabolism" section, then reducing the no. of references to one or two? Alternatively, if you think this is an important topic, could you start a new page dealing with toluene detection, or maybe better would be an article on human exposure to toluene and its metabolism/detection? sorry it has taken so long to get back to you but I've been really busy with a project. I've found no articles on the dental effects of toluene, though this is not really in my field of study so I'm not sure what journals to read. Sorry this took me a while to respond to (see the alsol talk page), I have been mostly offline lately. I have access to fast internet here at my brother-in-law's, but seven screaming children, two grandparents, two dogs and a parakeet aren't conducive to analysing subtleties of stereochemistry! I think that most of the errors have been addressed, except for the reversibility of many enolate-based conditions. I also think that the article is now "top heavy" in advanced material, we need to cover the basics better, I am willing to have a go at that if you and Eugene are OK with that. Thanks for the information on the V1.0 project. I see you are a chemist too, and I added my name to help work on the two chemistry Wikiprojects. I hope we can work together. I hope one day students can log on here rather than buy a $150 chemistry textbook. It's much more easy to use and we can reproduce all the charts easily. Richard Arthur Norton.

Welcome aboard! Take a look at the Chemicals worklist if you want to work on chemical compounds – try to bring the article up to A-Class if possible. We also have a proposed worklist which looks likely to become policy of the Chemistry WikiProject, if you want to work on reactions, notable chemists, or more general topics. Thanks for getting in touch! My real name is Martin Walker, by the way. I've been busy with other things too, though I've tried to keep things ticking over at least, and I updated a few tables (a few still need doing). I think the good article (GA) standard seems reasonably high in most cases, and I think a good number would meet the A-Class level, but I'd let you be the judge. Some are pretty short to be A-Class, though in a few cases that's all that's needed, I accept. I've put the GA page on my watchlist, I think this will be a rich source of articles for WP 1.0. I think conversely the GA people may have been using our lists as sources of GA ideas! As for the ones that haven't responded, I think we should probably leave them until we've contacted all of the others then try again - unless you have other suggestions? There are several more of these "...chemdata supplement" labeled pages that may need clean up using your datapage standard. WP:FAR

Six have been designated an "Article of concern" due to unresolved issues, and six reviews have passed with all issues addressed. Though FAR has not been extremely active, it has received quite a bit of positive attention, and the articles that have been reviewed have had some good comments. Before I send in the hordes...

Is there a template or a format agreed upon, i.e. a set of standard headings? Intro, key properties, structure, key rxns, fun stuff, toxicity, refs. For example, it seems that the first line should give the formula and common names.Smokefoot 18:43, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

I think your list looks pretty good. With inorganic compounds, I used to use something like the following as a starting point for section headings (based on what was commonly used already). Most of these were in the template originally, but they were removed, probably to allow flexibility. (Intro, with no header) then History, Structure/Physical properties, Chemical properties, Preparation, Uses, Biological role, Precautions, Suppliers/Manufacturers, External links, References. These headings or something like them have become fairly standard. Obviously you pick & choose; if it's sodium chloride the bio section is major, but if it's cerium nitrate it's non-existent. In many cases the structure and/or physical properties is adequately described in the table, but in same cases like hydrogen peroxide you may want to illuminate some particular aspect. With organics the situation is similar but there may be sections like Biosynthesis (see limonene), Occurrence, Synthesis, and maybe discussion on

things like the stereochemistry (see menthol), particularly with natural products. Make sure they only capitalise the first word of the the section header, unless it's someone's name. I hope it goes well. Walkerma 16:27, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

I forgot to mention - yes, the intro typically gives the commonest names in bold (though there's no need to list them all, there's space in the table for that). The formula is usually given. With inorganics I like to say something like, " Iron(III) oxide is the commonest oxide of iron" so there are links to the element and the anion. Then summarise major uses, properties, important/interesting facts; see hydrochloric acid for a longer example, or copper(I) chloride for a shorter one. Walkerma 16:40, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Please note that these are only guidelines: there is too much variety between different compounds to hope for a single set of applicable headers.
