Your GA nomination of Black Allan (horse)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Black Allan (horse) you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria.   This process may take up to 7 days. Ka-CHING!

edit

A project with Amazon.com vouchers as prizes! [1] if you want to go for the voucher, I want to go for the wikicup points. We could bring Welsh Pony and Cob up to GA. Big thing would be to add more sources from nation-of-origin to supplement the fairly US-centric tone. I might reformat how the images are presented too. Interested? Montanabw(talk) 19:37, 9 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't care about the vouchers because I don't order stuff online and even if I won them wouldn't use them (my parents had their identity stolen years ago and I don't give out info, don't even do Facebook), but sure, I'll help with the article for free. I can check out Google Books and find some more sources and help with expansion. I'll post at the talk page when I find something, or just add it in if it's really good. I don't have email at all (crappy smartphone! It makes everything else so annoying I don't even try it). Can you link me to it if it's online? Thanks for trying. 🐎 White Arabian Filly Neigh 15:54, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Well, let me see if I can provide an overview. To begin, I can't create the article myself because of a COI (I was the producer at the time so all I can do is make suggestions) but I think it has merit for its historic value as an article in our category, Project Equine (sports). It would pass GNG for a number of reasons:
  1. It first aired as a special on PBS affiliates in 1993;
  2. It stars celebrity William Shatner when he was active showing American Saddlebreds. It is a unique behind-the-scenes look at Belle Reve Farms with Bill talking to the audience about breeding and showing American Saddlebreds;
  3. It focuses on breeding, raising, selling and showing American Saddlebreds; therefore, it may also qualify under equine (sports);
  4. It won the very first award ever sponsored for Broadcast Media Excellence (see my user page) by the American Horse Shows Association, this link will take you to the uploaded pages of the articles from the two magazines.
  5. It was the first tv episode of its kind for the American Saddlebred Association and AHSA;
  6. It was covered in the American Saddlebred magazine, and also in "Horse Show Magazine" which was the publication for AHSA at the time;
Let me know if you need more info. Best!! Atsme📞📧 17:24, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
That's interesting, I'll start a draft and work on it. I think it's worth doing and it'll fit in with the American Saddlebred Horse Association article, which I wrote. Is there a link to the show itself? The facebook link only brought up a short description and not the articles. I think Belle Reve Farm may also meet notability; for the show I did a quick userspace stub creation covering all basics; will expand later. White Arabian Filly Neigh 20:17, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker)I think that Atsme can provide properly formatted references to hardcopy material, and I can access it via email to provide the double-check that it says what it says... I don't have the time/space to do this particular article, but I can pop by to be second whip... also, there is a mention (brief) of Shatner in American Saddlebred and we could expand the stuff about his equestrian pursuits at his bio article here (I did something similar at Wayne Newton, for example). See the program at this link. It's not broadcast quality and it's watermarked because of licensing. It looks decent on a cell phone because it was uploaded as a small file. Atsme📞📧 21:59, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
WAF - would it be ok with you if I played in your Sandbox to do a little copyediting and maybe make suggestions? Atsme📞📧 21:49, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Y'know, I gotta say that Shatner is actually one hell of a good rider; most men his size cannot ride saddle seat that well; he could damn near win an equitation class. Count me kind of surprised. Montanabw(talk) 03:35, 14 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Put a bit of stuff in the draft you created. Hope it helps. Horsegeek(talk) 13:57, 14 March 2016 (UTC)HorsegeekReply

Thanks for all help, and it's fine to play in the sandbox. Incidentally, the guy I learned from was close to Shatner's size, and he was a very good rider as well. Not all heavier riders flop and bounce.
By the way, Shatner and Ch. Call Me Ringo did a presentation at the 2010 WEG, and I think the horse may be notable for that and his other accomplishments.
I haven't had a chance to watch the whole program yet, but will try later. (Hungry baby guinea pigs.)

It's strange they'd give them almost identical names. Usually a family of horses have similar names, like Merry Go Boy's son was Go Boy's Shadow, but they're not that close. I think both of them may be notable. White Arabian Filly Neigh 15:01, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I think it is. It's unlikely they'd allow two horses with the same name in the same breed registry, and I don't think there's more than one Hanoverian registry in the US. White Arabian Filly Neigh 20:04, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Horsegeek European horse naming conventions are more comfortable than USA with using I, II, III, IV, etc... if you really want to rip your hair out, the Lipizzans name horses with sire and dam's name combined, so you can sometimes have near-identical names; the Bábolna stud in Hungary did something like that too, with Roman numerals--there are so many Arabians named "Siglavy Baghdady" in pedigrees that it makes me want to rip my hair out...! May want to dig a little in the German archives... but allbreedpedigree verifies they were full brothers (Allbreed is an "anyone can edit" source that can have mistakes, but... Me thinks it's ready to publish

edit

Ok, WAF and Montanabw - when you get time, see how it looks and make your determination. Also, do you think it would prove helpful to include the article tearsheets from the magazine that are available on Commons or somehow link to them as external links or something?

I'll do the move; I think the tearsheets could be just put in the article. The article on Imperator is almost ready to go live too. White Arabian Filly Neigh 14:21, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Unless you can establish it's out of copyright, there might be a copyright issue at commons, so don't insert them in the article or link to them, just do the hardcopy cite and if someone questions it, then show the tear sheets. Montanabw(talk) 21:38, 26 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Montanabw Commons has the necessary copyright releases so the tear sheets are good to go. Atsme📞📧 23:52, 26 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Of course, an unidentified IP showed up to raise a COI issue so no one could actually id the user. Perhaps to avoid such a ridiculous time-sync issue, you should have just taken the final article you all approved, and pasted it in lieu of a move. As you may be aware, and quite sadly, historic significance has no relevance to some, and they are willing to hide behind an IP address to create dissension that is in no way helpful to the encyclopedia. Another option would be to delete the edits with my user name attached, and reinsert them with your user name. I don't want to be credited with any of the edits - I was simply helping while in draft form under supervision by multiple editors. Atsme📞📧 20:12, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
The IP is obviously familiar with WP, in order to know that, and they're just trying to stir up trouble. I backed you up on that talk page; I think the IP is just being a pest and has no valid argument, since three others were reviewing your edits.
I launched Imperator (horse) and should have the draft of Sky Watch ready within a few days, to go with the article. I already did one on Shatner's farm. White Arabian Filly Neigh 20:19, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Great work, WAF. I imagine a sock puppet investigation would turn-up some interesting results. It's also rather "coincidental" that the attack on this article occurred at the same time WP:Project Accuracy started receiving a little attention as the result of the efforts by Wikicology to recruit input. It's really very sad, and I tend to believe it involves some of the same editors who harassed me in the past without reason or purpose - it's almost as if I'm under attack by trolls whose only mission is to see WP fail. Atsme📞📧 21:44, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'd bet so; I just got done dealing with a sockmaster who kept screwing with the various dog breed articles, using multiple accounts and then multiple IPs. If this particular one keeps up their annoying habits, they're headed for a block. White Arabian Filly Neigh 00:31, 26 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Funny - when I created the WP:AVDUCK essay, it resulted in something similar that eventually wound up being a COINoscopy. Now I'm in discussions over WikiProject Accuracy which I recently created, and again I'm dealing with unwarranted COI attacks. Curious how the IP traces back to Canada, which raises my suspicions about who might be behind the harassment. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I am duly impressed by your unyielding patience, WAF, especially in light of the warrantless BS that's being spewed; it's clearly harrasment, perhaps born of jealousy, who knows? How sad and such a senseless waste of time. Atsme📞📧 16:42, 26 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
If they get too troublesome, I'll take it to ANI and request a Checkuser. Thanks for your comment about my patience (my parents complained for years that I didn't have any). White Arabian Filly Neigh 21:32, 26 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I'll watchlist, if there's a COI problem, everyone knows I'm the anti-COI B--ch from the "PHN" article, so if I'm OK with it, we should survive. Maybe put the close association tag at talk, though. Montanabw(talk) 21:38, 26 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Montanabw. There is no financial COI or advocacy involved, my part of the editing was restricted to WAF's sandbox prior to it being moved to mainspace - I have not edited the article while in mainspace, and there is nothing in our COI guidelines that would prevent me from making suggestions here or on the TP of the article. This is also not a situation of "self-cite" because you and 3 other editors are involved and overseeing it, and will either accept or reject my suggestions. The program aired on PBS, it stars William Shatner, I retired from the television/film industry a long time ago, there is no financial interest involved, and the program itself is archived as an historical broadcast. The only thing I'm guilty of doing is making a contribution, so if that's my only crime, oh well. Now that the silliness is out of the way, I just wanted to mention the following for your review:
  1. Concept and Creation section - The series' origins correlated with the stated vision of former ASHA president Judy Werner, <--- incorrect wikilink. Judy Werner was the president of the American Saddlebred Horse Association, not the United States Equestrian Federation.
  2. Theme section - The episode ended with the intense head-to-head competition between two of the all-time greatest five-gaited Champions of their time, the stallion Sky Watch and the [[gelding] Imperator, in head to head competition <--- head-to-head is redundant
  3. Release section - As a pilot episode, A Celebration of Horses: The American Saddlebred was scheduled for release on four PBS network affiliates, and was broadcast and rebroadcast from November 1993 until October 1995 <--- 4 PBS network affiliates is incorrect. It should read, As a pilot episode, A Celebration of Horses: The American Saddlebred was scheduled for 4 national releases from November 1993 until October 1995 with the first release televised on 56 PBS network affiliates ranging from New York to California.
  4. Cast section - the horses owned by Shatner would be the stallion Sultan's Great Day, and broodmare, Miss O'Hare. Hope my suggestions will prove helpful. Atsme📞📧 23:51, 26 March 2016 (UTC) Still not corrected. Concern is that only 4 stations makes it non-notable. The program aired nationally on 56 stations, 4x over the course of a couple of years.15:23, 27 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think I fixed most of those, and added the tearsheet back in. I have a sandbox article on Donna Moore and another on the Lexington Junior League Horse Show. Imperator is up for DYK and Sky Watch is half done. Whew. The articles are running away with me! White Arabian Filly Neigh 01:30, 27 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Suggestion: instead of using the AHSA Award in the info box, what about using the cropped cover of the American Saddlebred magazine with William Shatner for the infobox File:1994ASHA-Article-Cover (cropped).jpg and then add the award image to the section for the award? Also, I wonder if an admin could help you with a copy/paste of the source material from your sandbox rather and eliminate the "move to article space" which included my edit suggestions? It should have been a clean creation by you but that may not be appropriate since others edited in the sandbox. I don't know. I just hate that what should have been a welcome contribution to the encyclopedia ended-up bringing controversy to Project Equine, and for that I apologize to my colleagues. Perhaps Montanabw can share some advice. Atsme📞📧 15:11, 27 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

What exactly is the difference between horse awards and honors? I'm doing an article on Sultan's Great Day and he was crowned World’s Champion Two-Year-Old Fine Harness Stallion/Gelding. Is this a award or honor? Thanks. Horsegeek(talk) 23:11, 31 March 2016 (UTC)HorsegeekReply
