Eritrea was a part of Ethiopia when the subject was born (1986). The government was known as the "Derg" and controlled modern day Ethiopia and Eritrea from 1974 to 1987. Wikieditor969 (talk) 02:59, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

With all do respect... we were colonized... we fought for our independence and we are and were alway Eritrea. Please stop editing pages that haven't requested your input. It gets used as propaganda to illegitimize the performers ethnic heritage. You cannot apply western standards to border disputes using pedantic measures. Respectfully. In addition to Wikipedia's basic principle of citing sources (Wikipedia:Citing sources), a special need for citations applies with regard to elements of a biography of a living person (WP:BLPPRIVACY). Since when does there need to be this much effort put in to verify a birthdate? Most people on wikipedia don't even have a birthdate or birthplace backed by a reference link. I can't understand why you are so insistent that this person must have one, and are so quick to pounce and revert my edits. If you had to verify every single person's birthdate on wikipedia there isn't a verified source for each and every person. You can do a million google searches online for this person and see that the birthdate is clearly labeled as Aug 15, 1981. Surely if this birthdate is shown countless times online, without any source challenging it, then it should be correct? Furthermore, the birthdate had been listed Aug 15, 1981 for years until I had pointed out that since that is the case, then the birthplace should be listed as Asmara, Ethiopia as Eritrea did not exist at the time. I apply Wikipedia's standards regarding dates of birth for living people when I see such dates either unsourced or accompanied by citations to sources that are not considered reliable for such use. You are not singled out, by any means. My watchlist frequently leads me to look at articles that have problems with proper sourcing for a living person's date of birth.

You asked, "Since when does there need to be this much effort put in to verify a birthdate?" I suppose the best answer would be since Wikipedia:Verifiability was created (whenever that was). Verifiability should not be considered an option. As that page says, it is "a widely accepted standard that all editors should normally follow."

As for the number of hits on a Google search, if one of those meets Wikipedia's reliablilty standards, you are welcome to use it. Unfortunaetly, many hits on Google are from websites that are not reliable.

I should point out, also, that because this article is about a living person, WP:BLPPRIVACY applies, eliminating use of public records (such as a birth certificate) to document a date of birth or other content. Eddie Blick (talk) 01:54, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Anything on Wikipedia is subject for removal if it's either not sourced or poorly sourced. Not a good idea to assume that just because other articles don't have sources means that it's okay for the article that you're editing to not have sources as well. Kcj5062 (talk) 12:45, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Birthplaces in Eritrea province

Hello! I'm probably a bit late to be helpful, but I've just seen some of your edits changing birthplaces from Eritrea to Ethiopia for people who were born during the Ethiopian administration of Eritrea. I recommend either adding an explanatory note saying that Eritrea was part of Ethiopia at the time or, probably better, giving birthplace as something like "Asmara, Eritrea Province, Ethiopia" (for example, Zelenskyy's article gives his birthplace as "Kryvyi Rih, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union"). There is a big comment asking editors not to make further additions to the infobox, as its present state is the result of careful design and consensus. Then, I revert the changes you made regardless, stating plainly that they were undiscussed. It doesn't matter how basic or correct you are, it's not really acceptable for you to ignore both those things and immediately put your changes back against consensus. Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes), a topic designated as contentious. I've gone through your edits for today and reverted a few of them. I want to explain what's going on here: It looks like the general effort in your edits for today are geared toward removing mention of an independent Eritrea from Wikipedia. In some cases, you have delinked the word Eritrea. As you have in no case given explanation for this removal, I have restored the links. In one case, you removed sourced data & its source. I restored this. In some cases, you added that Eritrea was a province of Ethiopia at the time of an individual's birth. When this is true, I have made no change. In some cases, however, this is false. I have undone these changes. With living persons, if the source does not specify that the individual was born in the Ethiopian Empire, I have undone the edit because of our WP:BLP policy. The Horn of Africa is a contentious topic: WP:CT/HORN. You would do well to change your editing practices: Continuing to edit in this manner in a contentious topic is likely to lead to restrictions on editing privileges.
