Wikipedia talk:Blocking policy#Non-administrators adding blocking templates
Please review the above thread. Non-administrators should not be adding block templates, administrators will do so when appropriate. Also, this represents a personal attack. I see you have a history of being disruptive in this arena. There's no need to be taunting the users after you've had them blocked. –xeno (talk) 12:31, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- Please review the above thread. Non-administrators should not be adding block templates
- That thread doesn't even rise to the level of guideline, let alone rule, so waving it about is just silly. It's a plain ordinary tagging task, and no reason not to be done -- ESPECIALLY when it also removes spam. Should I be pointing you to the actual RULES regarding spamming, then?
- As for your farcical claim of "taunting", the less said about your projection regarding the standard addition of a standard notification template, the better.
- If you have an actual complaint about actual violations of actual rules (or guidelines), please let me know then. Otherwise, don't make up rules to enforce. --Calton | Talk 12:42, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- If you had bothered to read the talk page of that user who's talk page you are tagging, you would see that I was in discussion with him both over the worthiness of the article and his username. Thus, your actions are unhelpful. Please stop. –xeno (talk) 12:46, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- I've also noticed you have a tendency to summarily blank or otherwise edit other user's pages. This should stop as well. People are free to use their userpages as a sandbox, and you should not be interfering with this. As for your edit summary suggesting I read WP:NPA, saying "don't be daft" in an edit summary is indeed a personal attack. –xeno (talk) 12:55, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- If you had bothered to read the talk page of that user who's talk page you are tagging, you would see that I was in discussion with him both over the worthiness of the article and his username.
- Huh, you seem quick to resorts to insults (like your obnoxious edit summary on my talk page and your wholly false "If you had bothered to read..." crack) while making (false) claims about "taunting". Not very bragworthy, I think.
- Of COURSE I read the talk page -- exactly how did you think it possible to avoid doing so when editing it? -- and it makes not the slightest bit of difference: HE'S INDEFBLOCKED. If you don't like that, you ought to take it up with the blocking admin or, if you're really sincere, unblock him yourself. But you can't, can you, what with it being a prohibited meta:Role account and all? Perhaps a refresher on the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, the FAQ for businesses is in order. Oh, and for your cracks, I'll throw in WP:NPA, to boot: you're not exempt.
- Thus, your actions are unhelpful. Please stop.
- As you are someone who is removing standard notification templates without real cause, citing non-existent rules/guidelines, encouraging the edits of a meta:Role account, and restoring its spam, I'd say it's not me who's being unhelpful here. --Calton | Talk 13:03, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- I am prepared to unblock as soon as they choose another username. It's under control. Cheers, –xeno (talk) 13:05, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- I've also noticed you have a tendency to summarily blank or otherwise edit other user's pages. This should stop as well. People are free to use their userpages as a sandbox, and you should not be interfering with this.
- Nope. Once again, you need a refresher on the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam, the FAQ for businesses, and, especially, the guidelines on user pages. Hint 1: the prefix "User:" doesn't sprinkle magic pixie dust over spam and other unsuitable content. Hint 2: the uw-socialnetwork and uw-webhost templates exist for a reason. Hint 3: encouraging spam on Wikipedia is disruptive, and you should not be interfering with its removal.
- As for your edit summary suggesting I read WP:NPA, saying "don't be daft" in an edit summary is indeed a personal attack Uh huh. And your TWO bits of snark are what, exactly? I'd say you do need a read of WP:NPA -- or have you granted yourself an exemption? --Calton | Talk 13:18, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- The blanking I was talking about was some months ago, so perhaps you've stopped doing that (specifically, you were blanking users who had added example images to their user pages). I don't see anything in my comments that approaches the level of personal attack the way saying someone is being "daft" would. In any case, I am in discussion with the user - which may indeed end in the conclusion that the potential article is not worth of inclusion and should be deleted - in which I will do the needful. Until then, please let me work with the user in question. There's no need to be uninviting to people who don't understand our policies. –xeno (talk) 13:21, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- I don't see anything in my comments that approaches the level of personal attack the way saying someone is being "daft" would. You had not the slightest compunction in suggesting that I was ignorant despite the obvious implausibility of such a claim. Which points to an obvious problem of awareness and proportion, it seems to me. And, of course, I didn't call you "daft" -- I asked that you not to be so.
- I'll also note you haven't bothered to refute a single actual citation of the actual rules I'm going by, in favor of some vague recollection of months-old clean-up work -- which doesn't even match your claims about it, to boot. If you're going to play authority figure, you need to be on at least semi-firm ground.
- And as for your saying the editor will be unblocked when he chooses a new name, that's just great -- but wait, that old name? Oh yeah, IT'LL BE INDEF-BLOCKED, STILL. So, what, exactly is your rationale for not tagging it, again? --Calton | Talk 13:31, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- WP:CHU. What I'm trying to explain here (and clearly doing a poor job at it) is that if someone is working with a user to explain to them relevant Wikipedia guidelines and practice and bring them in line with them, someone coming in and unnecessarily tagging their pages during the discussion is unhelpful (and frustrating to the user trying to do the explaining). I'd appreciate it if you kept that in mind for the future. I'm sorry that we got off on the wrong foot, and perhaps my approach could have been more tactful. –xeno (talk) 13:35, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- "Relevant Wikipedia guidelines and practice" includes not allowing spam -- and certainly not editwarring to restore spam -- nor does it mean ignoring actual cited relevant Wikipedia guidelines and practice, making up new ones, and insulting other editors's good-faith efforts to clean up Wikipedia. So yeah, I'd say tact is not involved here at all. --Calton | Talk 13:53, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- I wouldn't say it's out-and-out spam and this user had the respect to ask us if the article was worthwhile of inclusion, the least we could do is have the respect to discuss with him whether it is, or why it is not, rather than just templating him. All I'm asking is that you use some common sense in deciding when a template is appropriate and when it might be better to personally discuss the issue with a user. Best regards, –xeno (talk) 13:57, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
- All I'm asking is that you use some common sense in deciding when a template is appropriate and when it might be better to personally discuss the issue with a user.
- I did. It was appropriate -- your projections regarding "taunting" notwithstanding. Shall I repost -- again -- the policy-page links, especially the FAQ for businesses, the COI guidelines, and policies regrading spam? All I'm asking is that YOU use some common sense...and if you find that suggestion insulting, perhaps you shouldn't have used that phrasing yourself in your "advice" to me. --Calton | Talk 23:10, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- I was attempting an appeal to your rule #3 above. I'll make this perfectly clear: do not template a user in which I, or another admin, is conducting a discussion with. Full stop. –xeno (talk) 23:34, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: moar template help
(Re [1])
- Done. I added in a bunch of <!-- Comments --> to take them out. As far as Mediawiki is concerned, they're now all on one line. Because of that, you may need to add in some <br> tags to make it display properly when those statements are true, but hopefully not. Hersfold (t/a/c) 16:25, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm, didn't quite work... It calls another template User:Xenocidic/sandbox which is the code for the row... Might not be able to do what I'm trying to do. –xeno (talk) 16:44, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

- it's been buggin me for 2 weeks =) welcome to the suck ;> –xeno (talk) 04:01, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
- YAAAAYYYY!!!!! It's finally fixed. I had to next each of the #if:s inside each other to get it to work, so you now have a huge line of 48 curly brackets at the bottom of the code which MUST NOT BE TOUCHED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. If they are touched, you'll probably make it look like a really bad batch of bread pudding. But, I did test it, and it should work now. At last. Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:15, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Is it just me, or is it very hard to read the 'cidic' on the default skin? Asenine 22:51, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:VPTIPlogo.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:VPTIPlogo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:30, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks to everyone who participated in my RfA, regardless of their !vote. I have withdrawn the nomination as a failure at 19 supports, 45 opposes, and 9 neutral statements.
As has been written and sung, you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get what you need — and what I need is to go back to working on our shared project. Not everyone has to be an admin; there is a role for each of us. After reflection, I feel I don't have the temperament to secure community consensus as an admin at any point, and I will not be applying again in the future — and hey, that's all right, 'cause I stay true to the philosophy that adminship is no big deal: I tried, I failed, and now I'll return to doing what I've always done. I have an extremely strong belief in the consensus process, and the consensus was clear. I will be devoting my energies to volunteering at MedCab and working up a complete series of articles on the short stories of Ernest Hemingway, among lord knows what else. Thanks again to everyone who spared the time to weigh in on this one. It was made in better faith than it probably seemed.

Appreciate your participation at my RfA. In the end, things didn't work out, but I probably should have expected that. There's so many other ways to serve the project, and that's what I'll be doing. Glad you liked my answer to Q4...always a puzzler, that one. Cheers! Mr. IP 《Defender of Open Editing》 14:55, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Potentially controversial query
I encountered this situation while scanning recent changes: Is 'god' capitalized in articles as a whole? The article in question was not pertaining to god. Not sure if that has any relevance. Are there any guidelines pertaining to this? Seems like a potential revert war situation. Washburnmav (talk) 15:57, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm unsure about guidelines regarding this but I would think that 'God' is capitalized due to it being a proper noun regarding a single name entity when used in that context. Lympathy Talk 16:04, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm, Lympathy is probably right here... Any particular article in question or...? –xeno (talk) 16:06, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- This is the article and edit in question. It was done by a ip user, and later reverted by a user. Although I am religious, I'm not one to care enough to engage someone about this. However, I can forsee this being a problem I would encounter in the future. How would you proceed?Washburnmav (talk) 16:35, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- I am not religious but I think that in this instance respect for a deity should be considered and I undid the edit accordingly Lympathy Talk 17:01, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm in this particular case I think that "god simulator" is more appropriate. See, for example, the hat note at the top of God. The "god" (male deity) is lower-cased. The article isn't talking about a specific "God" but that the player is acting as a god. Make sense? I could be totally wrong, mind you =) –xeno (talk) 17:06, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Xeno makes a valid point and "god simulator" seems more accurate but when respect to a singular god, I still feel it should be articulated as "God". The discussion should probably be opened up to a wider audience. Lympathy Talk 17:11, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi! Would you mind taking a look to this image? It doesn't have a copyright tag but it says "Exact licensing still being cleared up; owner has nonetheless agreed to release the images sufficiently freely for Wikipedia's purposes". blocking promotional usernames
When you block someone with spamusername
, are you supposed to enable autoblock and disable account creation? J.delanoygabsadds 18:03, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- It's up to your discretion, it depends on if they were being disruptive or not. If not, you can just softblock and encourage them to create a non-promotional account name. –xeno (talk) 18:04, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
Request for rollback
Hi, Xeno.
I'm back after a month or so of editing. (It's only right to ask the admin who declined me before.)
I now have over 500 edits, though some of that is to the user space. I feel much more comfortable getting around and know WP policy a lot better.
I have gained experience using Twinkle and the undo button. Though I don't fight vandalism full-time, I patrol for it almost every time I'm on Wikipedia. I've now dabbled in many areas of Wikipedia that I can help out in.
With your permission, I would now like to start using Huggle. I understand that rollback is only for blatantly nonproductive edits, like obscenities and gibberish, and should not be used if there is any doubt about whether I should use it. If I do receive rollback, I'll go through WP:New admin school/Rollback before using it for real.
(Full disclosure: I do know of one edit I made about a month and a half back that I realize I shouldn't have used Twinkle for, and I apologize for that. Don't worry--the bout of spiraling, guilt-ridden depression ;-) I suffered after realizing that I had stained my soul with a single improper Twinkling has more than taught me not to do that again. I have, per Wikipedia procedure, ironed my hands.)
Thank you for your time—I know you're busy. SunDragon34 (talk) 18:25, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Requesting assistance
There is a BLP problem with Warren Kinsella and thought I’d ask a few opinions. Warren Kinsella himself appears to have objected to the article (see evidence here) and seems to have written an explanation of his objections on my talk page. There is also a small related discussion at Talk:Warren Kinsella. I’d like to simply remove all material that has been objected to, as I strongly suspect the article over-represents criticism of Kinsella, but I’m not the best person to ask so I think a few other non-involved opinions are needed. I've protected the page due to an edit war that was occurring over this issue. If you'd like to look into this, hopefully a formal approach won't be needed. Okiefromokla questions? 19:25, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject message delivery
Xeno, I am trying to revitalize WikiProject New Jersey and was wondering if xenobot could do a user page message delivery for me? I have the message already set at WP:WikiProject New Jersey/Bulletin and there is a memebr list at WP:WikiProject New Jersey/Members. If this can be done, I'd appreciate not having to manually deliver 60 messages. I believe it should be substed because hopefully that page will get changed more often in the future. Thanks. Jim Miller See me | Touch me | Review me 22:48, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Certainly. Can you perhaps add some small text that gives them an opt-out option? (Like a section or subpage of the members list) –xeno (talk) 22:50, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sure can. Great point. I may need to move the message since I just discovered that it transcludes into the bottom of the WP banner! Nice to get eyes on it, but not what I expected to see. I'll have to add a sign-up page the future if a regular newsletter starts happening. Is it better to maintain an opt-in or opt-out list? Easy enough to just create a seperate newsletter signup list for the future instead of having people opt-out for this one-time message. Jim Miller See me | Touch me | Review me 22:58, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, it's easier for the bot owner to have an opt-in list obviously. How about this, take the members list, make it into a newsletter delivery list, and then people can opt-out by removing their names? If you want to opt out of future bulletins and/or newsletter, remove your name from (this list) Something like that? You can take the opt-in list from User:Xenocidic/sandbox –xeno (talk) 23:01, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Adoptees?
Hi there Xenocidic. I was wondering, do you know any users looking in for adoption? I'm currently looking for one adoptee, but the adoptees looking for adoption at the adoption page show quite a lot of inactive editors. Since you do adopt, I was wondering if you knew any users who would like to be adopted. Thanks, RyRy Public (talk) 23:58, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- None right now Ryry. If you come across someone in C:ADOPT who hasn't edited in say 2 months, you should remove the adoptme userbox and just leave them a note letting them know they'll need to put it up again if they become re-active. –xeno (talk) 00:43, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm just doing it manually, but you could audit his protection log (which is very long). -Royalguard11(T) 19:54, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- My reply here.
- I ended up on AN/I the last time I did a mass unprotection. If you want to go to AN and ask about it I think that would be fine, but I prefer to stay away from AN. This does explain why there are so many indefinitely semiprotected articles though. -Royalguard11(T) 20:00, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Hihi. Sorry, I wasn't aware they were endorsed by Rare - however, at the bottom of the home page, it says "PinataIsland.info is in no way affiliated with Rare® Ltd., Microsoft Game Studios, or 4Kids Entertainment.". I'm just wondering what the story is? Thanks! Fin©™ 22:18, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- No worries - they're "all-but endorsed" which basically means - Rare gives them exclusive breaking news from time to time and their developers (BIGsheep, etc.) post there on a regular basis. –xeno (talk) 22:20, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Adoptee tasks
I want to thank you for adding this as a task for adoptees like myself. I often find myself wondering what I can do to help without knowing where to start and this is a great step for me to help and achieve at the same time. I realise this has taken a large amount of time and effort and I want to acknowledge that I appreciate what you have done. I aim to complete these exercises/edits over time and gain the experience and understanding needed to one day become an admin and also to become a better and more effective wiki user. Response
(Re [14]) Hi and thanx. I don't often use those citation formats because it can be performed simpler and without finding the template as I tried to do -- but for some reason, it didn't work. Do you know why? It fit the same format as the other citations, XYZ.com, but wouldn't format properly. DRosenbach (Talk | Contribs) 20:40, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

A Favor To Ask
Dear Xenocidic,
I have been here since 2004, and I would like to be an admin someday. I was wondering if you can briefly screen my account, and see if at this point, I make a good candidate for admin. If not, can you give me some pointers as to how I can become one? Thanks! Arbiteroftruth (talk) 19:46, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, right off the bat, you should tag Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Arbiteroftruth with db-author. Since it never went live. –xeno (talk) 19:52, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
- To be honest, I'm really not that great at vetting RFA candidates. What I do see is that your edit summary usage has greatly improved in the last two-three months. But you are pretty much in the very-low activity range, rarely breaking 100-200 edits per month. This isn't really a reason to oppose, but most people like to see people are more active. What's good is that you are constistently editing, with no activity-free months since 2005. Looking at [15] I also see you've got around 100 AIV reports, some RFPP reports and some SSP/RFCU activity. Fairly good balance of namespaces, with contributions to portals, which is rare. I also see you're a fairly regular participant at AfD. A cursory glance of your deleted contribs doesn't show much or any CSD work. In conclusion though, I'd say go for it. Have you gotten your tit in a wringer at all over the last few years? Like any major drama (AN/AN/I/WQA/etc)? If not, you'd probably have a fairly decent chance as long as you haven't pissed too many people off. That's just my off-the-cuff remarks. If you want, I could write the above up into a nomination statement for you if you'd rather not self-nom, but I must warn you, my one and only nom didn't go so well! (That was a while back, before I was an admin, though). Also review User:Balloonman/How to pass an RfA for more solid advice. –xeno (talk) 20:03, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

what's a guest book could I make or have one?--Spittlespat (talk) 20:46, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

- or you could just click the redlink above. –xeno (talk) 02:23, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- just go to your user page, then add "/guestbook" to the actual address after it's loaded (address would be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Spittlespat/guestbook) and edit it, then add a line of text saying "this is my guestbook", and yer done... it's the same thing I do whenever I want to make any kind of a subpage... just make sure to add a link on your userpage if you ever want anyone to find it... - Adolphus79 (talk) 04:13, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

- You could make a link on your userpage that goes to your guestbook. Or you could put a link to it in your signature. Or you could make some kind of navigational bar on your userpage that links to it (see my userpage for an example). Useight (talk) 00:01, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
How do you make a link? LOL I'm so stupid!!--Spittlespat (talk) 00:03, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- I see you already have the words "my guestbook" on your userpage. You could make that into a link to your guestbook using this type of code: my guestbook. If you put that in place of the words "my guestbook" on your userpage, that'll do the trick. And you're not stupid, you're new. Useight (talk) 00:06, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Question from a novice
Xeno, humor me here. Am I off my rocker for believing that even registered accounts should be given and then vandalize after a final warning before being blocked? Is there some kind of an unspoken precedence at AIV for not necessarily letting that happen? I've seen it happen far too often in the past 2 weeks to consider anything but two possibilities: 1. Admins often take action without really looking into things (shocking, right?), or 2. I'm completely out of the loop, having been an admin for only a couple of weeks. Your thoughts? Okiefromokla questions? 16:39, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- I have thoughts on this, but I'm waiting for Xeno to answer first ;-) Tan ǀ 39 17:17, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- It's a judgment call based on the situation and severity of the vandalism. Some accounts can be blocked on sight, others should be given warnings. –xeno (talk) 17:18, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- Exactly. There's a difference between assuming good faith (i.e., giving yet another warning and hoping the vandalism stops), and simply being foolish about it. "Poooop!" "Stop." "Pooooooop!" "Please stop." "PPPOOOOOOOOP!!!!!11!" "Pretty please stop". You might as well just nip it. Tan ǀ 39 17:24, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- Of course. In fact, I've blocked a few accounts that hadn't been sufficiently warned due to the circumstances and severity of vandalism. A situation with the block of Jlangton80 (talk · contribs) elicited this question. He had some edits in 2007 that appeared to have been made in good faith, but returned this month to vandalize 4 times — pretty run-of-the-mill stuff. The problem was, he was given his first two warnings earlier today, and didn't edit after either of these warnings before being reported and blocked. Under these circumstances, I was just a little bit frustrated, and it wouldn't be the first time. Okiefromokla questions? 18:16, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- Look at those last three edits. Immature homophobic attacks against WP:BLPs? This is clear-cut to me. Tan ǀ 39 18:19, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm. I suppose you're right. Still, in an ideal world, I wish he had been given the chance to vandalize (or not) after being warned of an impending block. It's the thought of being pelted with messages of "you can be blocked in you continue", and then being blocked anyway, that bothers me. But, you're right, his vandalism is a bit more serious than I had initially thought. Okiefromokla questions? 18:28, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yea, BLP violations are typically dealt with using a heavier hand than other forms of vandalism. He is of course, free to throw up an unblock request, but it doesn't appear he's here to build an encyclopedia. –xeno (talk) 18:31, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello again. It looks as if the ABN AMRO is unlocked now. At the writing, the only new edits are positive ones in which the last remaining mentions of "ABN Amro" were corrected to ABN AMRO. how do you search a pages history for a particular day. in my case WP:RfP on Dec. 3 2006. HereFord 19:06, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- There's an element at the top of the page to offset the history. Just type in 2006 and change it to December. Then click "older" until you get to the date you want. My adoption page lists my adoptees and the adoption class is an optional tutorial section for them. if you mean because you're already adopted by jacob; it's because he didn't quite meet the adopter criteria so I offered to be a co-adopter. –xeno (talk) 22:35, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Great to know that your only defense is "edit the target article so no one can oppose your consensus-less move". Your argument would be great in a discussion, not in IGNORING a discussion. - A Link to the Past (talk) 15:50, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- The RM stood for nearly a month. I thoroughly reviewed the WPVG discussion and felt that consensus was for a move. You are free to open another discussion. The hidden comment was to encourage this, and prevent an edit war. You'll note that I was not a participant in that discussion; in fact, personally, I couldn't care less where the article goes. If you feel that I have erred in determining consensus, please open a line of discussion on that, rather than wheeling over my action. –xeno (talk) 15:54, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- There was no consensus, and to ignore that series typically use (series) is faulty. Few series do this, and only when they're so much more well-known than any one game. This is absolutely not the case here, and with the disambiguation still existing, it should remain at the main page. - A Link to the Past (talk) 16:03, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree on whether or not there was a consensus. Clearly, I thought there was, else I would not have performed the move - but you're welcome to re-open the discussion. As for the dab page still existing, that's just because no one has seen fit to nominate it for deletion. I completed the move, that is all. –xeno (talk) 17:16, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

- Done In future you can just add db-userreq to your user subpages you don't want and they'll get deleted fairly quickly. –xeno (talk) 16:43, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
User box
(Re [17]) Can you please redelete the page? It was created by me, is not used by anyone, and I want rid of it. CSD G7 applies; it doesn't have to be in my user space. It's deletion will not affect the MfD discussion. PC78 (talk) 17:03, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

vandal 86.158.236.136
Hi thanks for blocking this vandal, but I need some assistance with him, as he has been ip hopping for a while after his account got a temporary block. Could you perhaps examine his sock puppetry case please? Giani g (talk) 17:54, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, it appears to be something that only a rangeblock can handle, unfortunately, it may be too much collateral damage based on his Internet service provider being quite popular in the UK, I believe. Please link the SSP report in future AIV reports. –xeno (talk) 17:57, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
O btw he just changed ip again, he just reverted everything, k thanks for that advice. Giani g (talk) 18:01, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- You may consider making an WP:AN/I report, seeking a rangeblock. –xeno (talk) 18:04, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
this Giani G is clearly a pro indian editor he makes changes to pakistani articles and doesnt even allow changes to indian articles i will edit indian mountains and he will go on to revert please look deeper beyong religion and stop taking sides you may like india but as a editor you must be neutral. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.162.70.179 (talk) 18:06, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- If you have a content dispute, you should log back into your account and seek mediation. –xeno (talk) 18:10, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
its not about content dispute this editor giani g is a nationalist indian who only targets pakistani articles with un sourced data and when i do the same to indian mountains he has a sissy fit i did have a acount but i forgot to sign in one day and edited without it and then giani g pounced my ip is dynamic if you know what that means and blocking me wont acheive nothing look at his biased editing first on pakistani mountains which are un referenced or i shall continue reverting no justice no peace cheers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.162.70.179 (talk) 18:13, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- If you have a dispute with an editor, the first step would be to seek mediation. See WP:Dispute resolution. Edit warring is unproductive. –xeno (talk) 18:16, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
your not really paying attention look at his edits hes the biased editor dont revert my edits as he provides NO SOURCES please dont take sides. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.162.70.179 (talk) 18:18, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not taking sides, I'm advising you both to seek mediation. –xeno (talk) 18:21, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Such a lovely diatribe, I was expecting nothing less, is everyone who disagrees with you Indian? You've used that "I forgot to sign in" excuse a lot, I already asked you to start the topic at the India and Pakistani project pages before diving into edit wars, and I will continue to revert till a new consensus is reached. Giani g (talk) 18:25, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
a consensus has been reached when you edited K2 ring any bells nationalist giani people actively reverted your claims on k2 and now your shift your un sourced claims to gasherbrum and other pakistani articles maybe you should get a taste of your own medicine and i should urge pakistani editors to target indian mountian how about that ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.158.235.17 (talk) 18:46, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Adoption
Hi Xeno, i'm really interested in being adopted by you. You seem to have a lot of adoptees, so if you're full, can you recommend anyone else? -- The reason I want adoption is because I still feel Inexperienced here! After half a year and two accounts, i'm still not really above basic edits and vandalism clean up. Don't get me wrong, I like cleaning vandalism (amongst other things) to All Grown Up! related articles. But, I just feel like I could and should be doing more! Thanks for your time :-) John Sloan (talk) 14:12, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm my adoptees don't keep me that busy so I can take you on. You can jump right into the lessons if you like. –xeno (talk) 14:14, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Great! What do I have to do? John Sloan (talk) 14:16, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Just hanging out on AN/X will give you enough experience for RfA! - Adolphus79 (talk) 14:17, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well if you're planning on completing the assignments you should probably create an adoption subpage to centralize discussions, at User talk:John Sloan/adoption. And then just visit User:Xenocidic/wikiadopt and do the lessons in whatever order you like. –xeno (talk) 14:18, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- (EC)I enjoy helping at RPP, but I will never attempt a RfA. Thanks anyway Adolphus :-) John Sloan (talk) 14:20, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- So when I've completed a task, I should just mention it on the subpage? John Sloan (talk) 14:22, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, and let me know by signing in the very first section of this talk page. (I'll add an e-z link to do that on your adoption subpage when you create it) –xeno (talk) 14:24, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

. J.delanoygabsadds 17:31, 11 August 2008 (UTC) - Nuclear, I'm a little confused why you feel that this newer novel deserves to be at the base name "The Rising Tide" over the older album. 34,200 hits for the book and 660,000 for the album.
- Jay, that would require a category be seperate created for G6'd pages. Feel free to work on that ;p –xeno (talk) 17:33, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Oh gosh, this thread is going to be complicated. Anyway, that edit summary probably wasn't entirely accurate. The song gets 676k hits on google whereas the book only gets 328k; that's true. But this more aligns the titles of The Rising Tide and The Steel Wave, two books in the same trilogy. NuclearWarfare contact meMy work 17:42, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- I doubt it's that high, many of those results aren't related to this particular book. Book+author is more accurate. I don't really care enough to press the issue but just keep this in mind for the future. –xeno (talk) 17:45, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Question about list
I am considering cleaning up Guitar tunings#Open tunings, and I encountered the list of musicians you see there. It seems unnecessary and I was going to get rid of it and instead add a sentence saying, "Open tunings are used by many famous musicians including blah, blah and blah." Just talk about 2 or 3. I wanted to get a second opinion before I delete such a hefty amount of information. I would also copy it to the talk page to have for reference. Your thoughts? Washburnmav (talk) 18:50, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, it doesn't seem like a very worthwhile list. Trim it to the most notable examples, imo. –xeno (talk) 21:53, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I found this article at WP:RPP. I've mentioned it at the BLP noticeboard, but i'd like you to have a look at it as well. It clearly has multiple issues and i've placed a few tags on it. But this article could have more serious problems and could also be a candidate for deletion. Thanks John Sloan (talk) 19:36, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- It's tough to judge because all the references are offline. But if they're incidental coverage, they don't serve to establish notability. –xeno (talk) 21:49, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm tempted to put it through AfD. If I decide to, I'll wait a few days for its request here to be handled and for some imput at BLP/N. Thanks John Sloan (talk) 21:56, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- What do you think of my changes? I think I have addressed most of the concerns presented by the maintenance templates, and believe that the article now exerts adequate notability. I didn't see any BLP violations though. Artichoker[talk] 23:25, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Just realized part of the article was a copyvio of this site. I have removed the offending content. Artichoker[talk] 23:32, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Copyediting...kinda?
I'm working to put a dent in the copyedit backlog by attacking the long list of cleanup tags that have been incorrectly put on talk pages and transferring them to the article or removing them entirely. Is this a worthwhile effort? Washburnmav (talk) 19:31, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Are there many of these? If a tag was put on a long time ago, and the person never gave an indication of why they were tagging it, and you don't agree with the tag, by all means, remove it. –xeno (talk) 19:36, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- There are quite a few, 50+. A lot of them never get taken off despite the article being fixed because they aren't on the article itself so editors don't see them. It also makes it difficult for copyeditors to find the page that needs cleanup because the article is listed under T for talk, even though its called "specimens in a toilet" (just an example of course :P). Washburnmav (talk) 19:41, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Either moving them or just removing them if you think the cleanup has already been done sounds fine. –xeno (talk) 19:42, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

We've discussed this at the VP, Please don't remove the guideline tag unless you've actually looked at the entire discussion about this page. Thank you Neuro√Logic 16:47, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I did, and I didn't see anything close to consensus for flagging it as a guideline less than 24 hours after the posting. And the current climate is leaning towards "leave it as an essay". –xeno (talk) 16:49, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- Withdrawing my comment, saw the discussion was moved, sorry Xeno =) And, yes...It seems lots of people want to wash their hands of being responsible adults today, when just a couple days ago I had a rather dramatic force of support discussion on IRC and a couple other areas...Sigh...Seems to me being shot down due to "inflexibility" which makes no sense to me, could you perhaps explain what they mean? Neuro√Logic 16:57, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- heh, a great reason to avoid IRC. I think the main reason is that guidelines should not/cannot bind what people do off-wiki. The only guideline that can be written is that TOVs should be reported to the appropriate on-wiki venue, i.e. AN/I. Jmho. –xeno (talk) 16:59, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- I suppose I see where that is coming from, perhaps there could be a compromise, limiting it to on-wiki action, or some such. Neuro√Logic 17:01, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Just thought I'd show you this. Steve Crossin Contact/24 03:57, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Aye, I saw that. =) –xeno (talk) 03:58, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, I'm moving the answer below:
My views on this
Decided that I'd answer this, as I don't intend to RFA. Anyways, given the fact that they had quite a history of vandalism, I'd be inclined to not unblock. The fact that they did have a constructive edit is a mitigating factor, however it doesn't really outweigh the previous vandalism that this user has done. However, if this was a user account, I'd offer them a
. I'm not sure if they can be offered to IP addresses. If they can, I'd be open to offering that, as well. The fact that they are somewhat apologetic is something I'd take into consideration, and the fact they did have a constructive edit adds to that. I'm all for assuming good faith and leniancy, but with a history of vandalism like they had, I'd be rather cautious to outright unblock them. Steve Crossin Contact/24 03:55, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- There's no rule against offering 2nd chance to IPs =) –xeno (talk) 03:58, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, then I'd offer them a 2nd chance. I think that every opportunity should be given if a user is apologetic, but given their history of vandalism, I'd like to see an intent to help the 'pedia, and the 2nd chance option would give that user the chance to prove that. If all went well, I'd be happy to unblock. Steve Crossin Contact/24 04:02, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Pretty much the answer I'm looking for. Vandals are a dime a dozen and re-blocks are cheap...constructive contributors are golden. I've moved this section to my talk page, I don't want the "right answer" to be very easily found by candidates =) –xeno (talk) 13:55, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- The "right answer"?. Hehe. :) Steve Crossin Contact/24 17:22, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- imo, anyway. some people think the right answer is to decline the unblock yourself and protect the talk page! heh. –xeno (talk) 17:30, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- Heh, yea..you shouldn't do that. I've seen that sorta thing happen before. If we don't assume good faith and have an aggressive attitude to vandals, or apologetic people, then new users won't hang around long. Re-blocking is easy, but getting a user to return after forcing them away is hard. Steve Crossin Contact/24 19:36, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

- Yup, I'd be very reluctant to unblock. If they are reformed, then in a week there should be no problems. I know my answer's probably "wrong", but since I generally don't engage in anti-vandal work it's not too big a deal. Wizardman 22:52, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

CAPITAN ELMO Isn't editing
Captian Elmo is starting to think Wikipedia is a fansite making cool userpages etc. Maybe you can teach him a few tricks, how about you read his talk page first!--Spittlespat (talk) 18:10, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- To be honest, I'm not sure that encouraging him to edit articles would be in our best interests at this time. –xeno (talk) 18:13, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm just saying that maybe you could ask him if he wants to be adopted and that you could teahc him a few of your tricks that's all but he's really treating Wikipedia like a big game--Spittlespat (talk) 19:23, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I understand Spittle, but please read this essay: WP:Competence is required. From what I've seen of his edits, he wouldn't be much of a contributor at the present time. Maybe in a few years. –xeno (talk) 19:25, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

- Sometimes it's better to let them lose interest in the userspace, rather than pushing them out the door into the mainspace where they can cause harm. Harsh? Maybe, but realistic. See Wikipedia:Social networking for more on this. –xeno (talk) 19:28, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

I met Captian Elmo in real life he's my friend it's just that when I call him he's says that he doesn't like editing and all he wants to do is find secret pages on Wikipedia so all I want you to do is help him just a little like try helping him into getting more edits and not just have fun if he wants to play he should go to Runescape but if he wants to edit he should go here, maybe get some more people to help discuss this!--Spittlespat (talk) 19:33, 13 August 2008 (UTC) I'm just asking, so are you going to help?--Spittlespat (talk) 20:21, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- I can't help someone who doesn't want to be helped. Point him at User:Xenocidic/wikiadopt, those are some tutorials on how he can improve Wikipedia. If all he wants to do is secret pages, let him find a few and lose interest. I have to focus my efforts where I can, I can't hold someone's hand and make them edit if they have no desire to. I already have enough adoptees who actually care about improving the encyclopedia already than to try and make someone into something they're not. –xeno (talk) 20:22, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Sorry i dragged you into this, you're right about not forcing them to edit He justs needs a little more time though I told you about this was only because I thought If you had an account you have to at least make some edits well guess I'm wrong!--Spittlespat (talk) 21:56, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
- It's no problem at all Spittle - you meant well. And technically, yes, he should be encouraged to edit the mainspace or blocked for myspacing but I'm going to invoke the wise words of a great man: "Can't someone else do it?" –xeno (talk) 12:27, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Re;NYSSA Name
- The correct place to request a new username is WP:CHU (but it would be much simpler to just create a new account rather than getting this one changed). Also, that new name you proposed still probably wouldn't fly. What about simply "Security Analyst" or something? –xeno (talk) 14:40, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- so this is my question. How can the NYSE have a page and other organizations that spell out the name, how do I get around that. We are a specific organization, going by something as generic as securities analyst would draw people specifically to an article about NYSSA. NYSSA - New York Society of Security Analyst (talk) 14:46, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
- NYSE is an article, not a username. Usernames should not promote some specific entity, nor should you be attempting to add an article about the organization you work for; this represents a conflict of interests. –xeno (talk) 14:48, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

I would like your help again
(Re [20])
xeno, it looks like I need more help. I am trying to remove ALL the drafts that I created (with the exception of my Sandbox); however they do not seem to be disappearing. So far the only one which disappeared is the one labeled "Aftermath_draft" (or the one in which you inquired about several minutes ago). Will you continue to help me, please? I no longer see a real reason to keep the remaining nine (or so) drafts. I have tried removing them but they still seem to be around. I inserted db-userreq in everything. (Incidentally, as I recall, there is a way to remove the entire group as one. Would you point me again in the right direction with a link for those instructions ? A procedure such as "group" will undoubtedly be much better than the slow process I used.) Thanks. Hag2 (talk) 19:44, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

- I too had this same thought, due to jumping right in with "my job here is vandalism and sock puppetry", not too many new users even know what a sock is, let alone are going to immediately start combating it. - 1 is that I found you because the user who put the welcome message on my talk page was given that message by you on his talk page.
- 2 I am not a Genius sock. I would hate to be compared to him.
- 3 I knew about Wikipedia beforehand because I have relatives who are big users and can't go a day without Wikipedia. I also read a lot on Wikipedia too.
- 4 I believe sockpuppets are also used to add vandalism. Not a single edit so far I've made has been vandalism. In fact, I even hhelped cath user $ik Gangsta for his WikiCrimes.

Xeno, thank you for your contribution to the discussion at my recent RfA and in particular for making mention of my attempts to rescue articles. Thanks again for the NSFW question too! Your RfA question
Hi xeno, are you going to ask your RfA question at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/It Is Me Here? If not, would you be okay with me asking it? Thanks John Sloan (talk) 16:32, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- That RFA looks like a foregone conclusion to me. That being said, feel free to pose my RFA question any time you wish. –xeno (talk) 16:34, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- The user wants their RfA to continue (despite the opposes) for a few more days. It seems fair to assume they will want the same level of questions as the other RfA's. Thanks for the permission :-) John Sloan (talk) 16:36, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- On the other hand, we don't have to spend time on nonstarter candidates. The editor could look through other RfAs to find out about questions that are typically asked on RfAs, something I don't think he did. Darkspots (talk) 16:43, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- Surprisingly enough, most candidates don't seem to do this either. Or, if they do, they still answered in such a way to cause me not to support. –xeno (talk) 16:45, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- (EC) I've asked the question. It wont hurt and the user might learn something from reading xeno's RfA question's scenario. TBH, I'm really interested to see the candidates answer (should he choose to answer it, of course). John Sloan (talk) 16:48, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Rating an article
Hi. How do you rate an article that is not rated by its Wikiproject? (In other words, how do you rate an article that is just out there on its own?)
I can't find any instructions other than the ones to rate the article on its Wikiproject template. Thanks. SunDragon34 (talk) 23:19, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- As far as I can tell, articles without wikiprojects typically aren't assessed. see Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment. the only suggestion would be to tag it with an appropriate wikiproject. what's the article? –xeno (talk) 23:22, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- Scuba diving. It has a Wikiproject, but the Wikiproject template doesn't have an assessment feature. Does the template need to be fixed? SunDragon34 (talk) 23:54, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, that's something you might want to raise on the project talk page. Though it doesn't seem very active. –xeno (talk) 23:58, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

AfD creation automation
Hey Xeno. Sorry to seem "lazy" (it's actually usually a stupidity thing), but I used to have tabs up top that let me create an AfD with ease. After this recent spate of monobook changes, they seem to be gone. I went through the history, and I'm not sure what change fucked it up... any ideas? Tan ǀ 39 00:14, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Question regarding warning
Is this warning for this edit out of place. I'm told it is, so if it in fact is unwarranted I tend to remove it. Landon1980 (talk) 02:44, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- I think the edit did go a little far someone questioning the reliability of sources is not lying and to say so seems to ABF a little. Your warning perhaps shouldn't have mentioned anything about blocking but simply that he should try to remain calm, assume good faith and be civil. (Disclaimer: I've only done a very brief cursory overview of the situation) –xeno (talk) 02:52, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah I suppose I shouldn't have mentioned blocking, the point I wanted to make was if he continued to be uncivil even after further warnings he could be blocked for it. The editor had also been edit warring recently, telling another editor he thought he owned the article every time he disagreed with him and so on. I was asking about the warning because he said it was misplaced and even warned me of NPA. So should I strike the mention of blocking or just move on? Landon1980 (talk) 02:58, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- Just move on, imo. I guess what I was getting at was it's usually better to try a softer approach with a first warning, the same way the templated warnings increase with intensity. –xeno (talk) 02:59, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- OK, makes sense. Thanks for your time. Landon1980 (talk) 03:03, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Ah, thanks for the tip about WP:BLANKING. My understanding was that messages could be removed, but formal admin templates (such as block messages) had to stay. I'd seen unblock templates restored in the past, and thought it applied to block messages as well. Thanks for clarifying! --Elonka 15:55, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Account creator rights
I don't think I have recently given these rights to anyone, is there something you are talking about in particular? Prodego talk 21:15, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well the rights don't do anything unless you hit the CATPCHA, so I don't see any harm in giving them to anyone whom asks. Indeed, if anyone were to ask me for them, I would probably give them 'account creator' without a second thought. I have always assumed it should be given to anyone who asks. There is no policy on giving it out, to my knowledge, though WP:PERM gives a suggestion. Since it can do no harm, I see no reason not to give it to anyone who asks. (Re [23]) Sorry, I've had it with these people. Using Twinkle to create hundreds of edit summaries that (1) viciously attack another editor and (2) contain a link to a browser-crashing obscene website is about as bad as it gets. Hi Xeno, I need your help again if you don't mind. An editor is telling me that music reviews cannot be used because they are opinion pieces. Is this correct? The reviews in question are published by the Rolling stone, New York Times, etc. It is over the genre emo and consensus on the article is the genre is to be included. So if you can't use reviews from reliable, published, third-party sources such as these what can you? According to User:Something X using reviews are prohibited by WP:RS. Cheers, Landon1980 (talk) 03:22, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
- Also, the other sources I referred to are in a recent version of the article but not current, we removed some of them so not to clutter the infobox by citing emo with 3 or 4 sources. He is reverting my changes and I don't want to edit war over it. Landon1980 (talk) 03:24, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
- This is the version of the article before the other two sources were removed so not to look cluttered. Landon1980 (talk) 03:29, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
- I don't see a reason why music reviews could not serve as a reliable source for a genre, ask him to point you to a guideline or maybe ask at WP:MUSICIANS. –xeno (talk) 03:41, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
- He said that reviews violate the opinion piece of wp rs, and undue weight. I always thought reviews were actually preferred over databases, etc. Reviews from well known, third-party, published sources know for fact checking and accuracy are actually preferred aren't they? Landon1980 (talk) 03:50, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds like he's grabbing at straws. Might want to ask someone who knows more about musician articles or raise it at WT:MUSICIANS, but it sounds quite dubious. –xeno (talk) 03:53, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'll do that if he continues. As I said, consensus is that emo belogs in the article as it is properly sourced. I'm not sure what he wants me to use if not a review. Doesn't pretty much everything related to sourcing genres boil down to an opinion in the end? There are many databases that do label paramore as emo though, from what I've seen though reviews are always preferred. Is there some scientific procedure which determines musical genre that I am unaware of? Landon1980 (talk) 04:03, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
- I'm just guessing here, but I would bet that reviews make up a significant portion of the sourcing for music-related articles. –xeno (talk) 11:36, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

- I think that would depend on the information being sourced in question, however that is most definitely a legitimate source. The talk page for Paramore is a little confusing but if I'm reading it right the question is if the band can be qualified as 'emo'. If a legitimate music reviewer from BBC or New York Times defines them as so, this is definitely a reliable source and something to be included. Washburnmav (talk) 15:05, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
- Music reviews from established media--those with established editorial control, no WP:COI, and not an WP:SPS are good and should be used in the context of music articles. WP is supposed to filter out inexpert opinions, not opinions altogether! Jclemens (talk) 16:39, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

What do you think of this section? Seems like a somewhat long list, and it is kind of an eyesore. Is there a better way to format this/ should some be removed? Wanted a second opinion. Stalker opinions are of course also welcome (I know you're there...) Washburnmav (talk) 16:25, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps tablefy it? the minor /occasional band members don't seem particular notable for the main article though. Perhaps "List of Eric Clapton's band members" or something. –xeno (talk) 16:34, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Request for participation in User:Abd/RfC
Because my participation as a Wikipedia editor has been questioned, and if I continue as I have in the past, I can expect future challenges as well, I have begun a standing RfC in my user space, at User:Abd/RfC. There is also a specific incident RfC at User:Abd/RfC/8.11.08 block. I understand that you may not have time to participate directly; however, if you wish to be notified of any outcome from the general or specific RfC, or if you wish to identify a participant or potential participant as one generally trusted by you, or otherwise to indicate interest in the topic(s), please consider listing yourself at User:Abd/RfC/Proxy Table, and, should you so decide, naming a proxy as indicated there. Your designation of a proxy will not bind you, and your proxy will not comment or vote for you, but only for himself or herself; however, I may consider proxy designations in weighing comment in this RfC, as to how they might represent the general community. You may revoke this designation at any time. This RfC is for my own guidance as to future behavior and actions, it is advisory only, upon me and on participants. This notice is going to all those who commented on my Talk page in the period between my warning for personal attack, assumptions of bad faith, and general disruption, on August 11, 2008, until August 20, 2008. This is not a standard RfC; because it is for my advice, I assert authority over the process. However, initially, all editors are welcome, even if otherwise banned from my Talk space or from the project. Canvassing is permitted, as far as I'm concerned; I will regulate participation if needed, but do not spam. Notice of this RfC may be placed on noticeboards or wikiprojects, should any of you think this appropriate; however, the reason for doing this in my user space is to minimize disruption, and I am not responsible for any disruption arising from discussion of this outside my user space. Thanks for considering this. --Abd (talk) 02:51, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- Xenocidic, Keeper76 not only declined your proxy, but he removed your entire line from the Proxy Table. Except for housekeeping, no editor should change a proxy assignment of another, without specific permission. You can, if you wish, delete the whole line, delete just the expression of general trust (the "proxy"), or assign another "nominee." No action is required; since Keeper76 has declined to participate, the proxy won't have any effect at all (it's only there to advise me). (Note also that you could name a different proxy and move your listing to the Do Not Contact section, as well.) But if you want to make a change, here is the page for your convenience: User:Abd/RfC/Proxy Table. And thanks. Every little bit helps. --Abd (talk) 15:53, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- Better still, Xenocidic, you could ask Abd to respect the wishes of other editors who don't wish to participate in his experiments and democracy. Urge Abd to do the courteous and polite thing, and re-remove Keeper76 from his table; it does no good to anyone for Keeper's name to be there, and there's no reason for him to make both Keeper and you jump through hoops to satisfy his own made-up rules. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 16:27, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know why TenOfAllTrades has to make it so complicated. Xenocidic made an edit to a page in my user space. Keeper76 removed it. That is generally not proper, period. "Jump through hoops?" Xenocidic could remove the line in a flash, and I made that easy, it's easier than asking me to do it. If it is left there, it does no harm. Explicitly, on that page, these "proxies" convey no right to act. (Otherwise, Keeper76 could have removed it as a proxy.... except that he declined the proxy, so it still would have been improper. The way I left it, a note shows that the proxy was declined.) Xenocidic chose to participate and nominated Keeper76 as his proxy, i.e., indicated general trust in Keeper76, for the purpose of advising me, if he doesn't do it himself, directly. Consider it a recommendation. The recommendation stands no matter what Keeper76 says or does. All Xenocidic would have to do, if he wants, for example, the removal by Keeper76 to stand, is say so, here or in any place where I see it. But the simplest thing to do would be to edit it to his own taste. And from what Keeper76 did, even if authorized, I have no idea what he'd intend. Remove just the proxy? I.e., leave the expression of general interest in being part of a virtual advisory panel (that Proxy Table is intended for a standing interest in advising a user who, it is claimed, is disruptive, and who is seeking such advice), which could mean I might occasionally ask his opinion? Name a different proxy? move his name to the Do Not Contact list, with or without naming a proxy? Or remove it entirely?
- This is, indeed, an experimental process, though it is fully within what guidelines allow, I believe. If anyone disagrees, WP:DR awaits us. It starts with discussion, right? Or does it start with a small group of administrators deciding that what they think is Wikipedia policy? I really don't know the answer to that question, and I'd like to find out. Tell me, which would be more disruptive, what I'm doing or a formal RfC on, say, Jehochman?--Abd (talk) 16:44, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

I believe that he has know removed my name if you in fact put it back there. (I haven't looked). As to your last question "which would be more disruptive, what I"m doing or a formal RfC", I ask you a return set of questions. Why are there only two choices? Why are there different degrees of disruption in your mind? Why not just let it go? I happen to watchlist a variety of pages that you've spammed with your grandstandish verbosity. - This was intended to be a very simple list, without comments (except a brief "note" at the end). While this particular list will probably be short, if it got long, I'd want it in simple form for a database. I don't want two classes of proxies, that is, open and hidden. So, yes, I know that you trust Keeper76, and I moved your comment (and his) to Talk for the Proxy Table, leaving only your user name in the Proxy Table, bare, with the timestamp. And I sincerely thank you for indicating interest in what I'm doing, even if it is apparently quite skeptical or pessimistic. The listing creates no obligation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Abd (talk • contribs) 22:23, August 22, 2008 (UTC)
- Best of luck with this Abd. I do see how it works in theory, but in practice it is way too process-heavy for a project like Wikipedia, especially with so many ever-changing and diversant outlooks on a particular situation. I'd be happy to discuss this with you some day outside the confines of the U/RFC. Until that time, feel free to ask for clarification on any of my statements I made during the event, but I will not be actively participating. –xeno (talk) 14:36, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: Can has nowlej?
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner; I was at the New York state fair yesterday... As to your question, I dunno man. I'm not sure if it's possible to fix it without modifying the MediaWiki software. The problem is the server is parsing the "=" symbol to its ASCII hexadecimal value of "3d" when it processes the internal link (MediaWiki apparently urlencodes all internal links before rendering the html) and at the same time, the server won't recognize a link to a page such as http://pinataisland.info/viva/Arocknid#tab%3dTV_show where the "=" is replaced with "%3d" because the "=" in this case is part of a server-side command ($_GET) that is processed before the "%3d" is parsed to display the "=". The only way I can think of to get around it is to use the full url of the tab. (GAAAA!!!!!!) sorry man, but I can't figure out any other way to get it to work. If it would help you, here's a link to the MediaWiki source code that parses internal links. Thingg⊕⊗ 20:22, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Hey Xeno, I need your help on this article. The same user is still deleting emo from the genres. He/she has atempted to remove emo for several months now. Consensus is also that reviews may be used on the thread the user started on the reliable source noticeboard. Several editors have warned this user about this. Re: subst thingy
I'm pretty sure it is impossible. I tried the following in my sandbox: {{#ifeq: {no} | yes |{{User:Xenocidic/UBX/{}|{} }}| {{subst:User:Xenocidic/UBX/{}{}}} }} and it works, sort of. produces:
Unfortunately, the above code does this by producing the following wikitext: , which shows the correct userbox, but doesn't give you the correct wikitext. Also, simply produces the text "" without actually including the code from . It appears you can't "double substitute". :/ Anyway, thanks for the challenge. I always enjoy wrapping my brain around stuff, even when I fail. Thingg⊕⊗ 19:44, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

- Hi Daisy. I'd be happy to help you with your article as soon as you can point me to a reliable source that indicates why this individual is notable. Please note that self published sources such as personal web sites, blogs, and press releases do not count towards establishing the notability of a subject. –xeno (talk) 14:07, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
perception of unequal treatment
This decision of yours bothers me, and is the main reason I have stopped contributing to en.wp. The reason it bothers me is that two sides in a dispute were not treated equally, and I would like to give you a chance to explain. This is what I saw:
- User:Thunderbird2 makes 3 reverts in a 24 hr period [28] [29] [30] and is blocked without warning
- User:Fnagaton makes 5 reverts in two 24 hr periods [31] [32] [33] [34] [35] and is neither blocked nor warned.
I repeat what I said then that the intention of my reverts was to take the dispute to the talk page, where it could be discussed and resolved without disruption to the article. If you see that as edit-warring that is fair enough. What I cannot understand is the unequal treatment. How do you justify it? Thunderbird2 (talk) 12:23, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
- Put simply, your edits repeatedly added unwanted tags against the consensus of three other editors, the editors being myself, Greg and SWTPC. Looking at the edit comments of the other two editors (for example "There is no problem with the citation, please stop being disruptive") it is clear you were adding those tags against consensus. Since you were reverted by three editors and continued to edit war assumption of good faith doesn't apply here. Read Wikipedia:3rr#Unwanted_edits to find out about why. You can also read Wikipedia:Vandalism#Types_of_vandalism and go to the part starting with "Abuse of tags". As you probably know reverting vandalism (which your edits are) do not count towards 3RR. Therefore my reverts of your edits do not count towards 3RR. Fnagaton
- Hrm, I'm sorry that you feel that way Thunderbird, but I was only reviewing the unblock request. I reviewed your actions and your actions alone, and did not look at other side; this would have been the responsibility of the blocking admin. However, if you do feel that I, or another admin, has made an error in judgment or the fulfillment of my duties, please raise a discussion at the administrators' noticeboard for further outside opinions. I do not wish to see you stop contributing to Wikipedia, and encourage you to continue to do so, but all of us must realize that at some point, we may be at odds with consensus and just have to accept that fact. I've been there; it's frustrating, but in the end just look at the big picture and find something else to do. Feel free to ask for further clarification on any of the above. Best regards, –xeno (talk) 14:04, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your explanation. You seem to be saying that you treated us unequally because the rules require you to do so, which doesn't make me feel any more inclined than I was before to continue editing. The blocking admin appears to have been responding to an accusation that I had made 5 reverts in 24 hrs. That is pure fiction, but if taken at face value, I can see why he acted in the way he did. But if the reviewing admin is not permitted to take the more complete picture I provided into account, the unfairness of the situation is institutionalised. Or are you saying that the blocking admin should have investigated the situation more thoroughly before acting?
- A final question, raised by Fnagaton's intervention above: How should I respond to his accusation of vandalism?
- Thunderbird2 (talk) 18:42, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm, that's not quite what I said... what I said was that in reviewing an unblock request only the actions of the blockee are taken into account. I don't have time at present to review the situation thoroughly and determine if any other parties should have been blocked as well or if your edits can be reasonably construed as vandalism. I will try to take a look tonight, but this complaint is really best raised with the blocking admin or WP:AN (I can initiate these discussions if you like), as I was simply reviewing the block which in and of itself appeared sound to me at the time of my review. I do recall taking about 10-15 minutes reviewing it before declining and determining that it did indeed meet the definition of edit warring. Again, I would be saddened for this to be the straw that made you leave Wikipedia, and I know nothing at all of binary number theory so I can't really help with mediating that content dispute, but just remember that when your opinion is of the minority, sometimes you just have to move on to more fruitful endeavours. –xeno (talk) 18:58, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
- You’re right, of course. That isn’t exactly what you said, but isn’t it an inevitable consequence of looking at only half of the picture?

- Don’t let Fnagaton mislead you into believing I was editing against consensus. There were two other editors (Tom94022 and Shreevatsa) who agreed with my interpretation and two others (Greg_L and Swtpc6800) who agreed with Fnagaton. Greg_L’s bullying tactics put off Tom94022 and Shreevatsa, leaving a false impression of consensus on the page. You probably suspect that there is more to this dispute than meets the eye, and there is. It is just the tip of an iceberg, so I will try to give you a feel for the sense in which this was the last straw for me.
- Greg_L has used this approach previously, and Greg_L & Fnagaton work closely together to achieve their objectives (so closely that they vote on each other’s behalf when one is offline, providing virtual 24-hr coverage between them), accusing of disruption those who dare to challenge them. Greg_L is the rudest editor I have ever encountered on wp, and his incivility continues with impunity. My main motivation for editing on wp, I believe in common with most other editors, is that it is enjoyable and relaxing. But, believe me, it is no fun dealing with these two, so where is the motivation for me to continue?
- Omegatron once tried to reign in Greg_L’s behaviour at WP:MOSNUM by means of this RfC, but it has made no difference. My request for mediation at mosnum was turned down, as far as I can tell because Greg_L & Fnagaton, unsurprisingly, do not wish to see any mediation. Omegatron was driven away from mosnum by Greg_L and Fnagaton, and has been inactive for some time. He has now left the project altogether. He was disillusioned for much the same reasons as I am.
- If you really wish to encourage me to stay, one way to do so would be to find someone prepared to mediate here. I do not plan to take this up at WP:AN myself (Omegatron tried that route also and it came to nothing, and anyway, I would not know what to write), but I have no objection to you doing so, if you think you can achieve something. Actually I would appreciate it. It is high time the antics of Greg_L & Fnagaton were investigated. Thunderbird2 (talk) 22:11, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Xenocidic, everything Thunderbird2 has written above is misrepresentation wrapped up in something that on the surface might seem reasonable. However after reading the RfC and mediation request and all of the referenced attached evidence, as User:Headbomb points out and other editors all agree, there is nothing to mediate because Thunderbird2 is just trying to forum shop to try to get his own refuted weak minority point of view inserted into a guideline. The reason why I don't agree with the mediation is that I do not agree with Thunderbird2's attempts to abuse the process and because the fault entirely rests with Thunderbird2 being completely unreasonable and failing to accept consensus. I firmly believe the efforts of those dealing with the mediation process is important to Wikipedia and that their valuable time and effort is better spent on real problems rather than the obviously fallacious request made by Thunderbird2. I think Thunderbird2 should be punished for trying to waste everyone's time and because Thunderbird2's editing pattern has become disruptive to Wikipedia and Wikipedia process. Of course I don't mind Thunderbird2 having his opinion, what I do mind is that Thunderbird2 is misrepresenting the situation in many different forums to try to get his own way. (Again WP:POINT#Refusal to 'get the point' covers this behaviour.) Thunderbird2 has consistently failed to support his point of view with substantive arguments in all of the related talk archives. The situation with Omegatron is that he tried and failed to abuse the RfC process to remove editors who disagreed with him. Read Tony's latest comments to Greg's RfC because it explains a lot of the situation. Omegatron failed to get his own way and now Omegatron has quit, it is churlish of Omegatron and Thunderbird2 to try to blame other editors for Omegatron quitting when actually the fault entirely rests with Omegatron's bad behaviour and abuse of process. As you might have figured out Thunderbird2 is basically "pro-IEC binary prefixes". Headbomb is an editor who personally likes and uses IEC binary prefixes, however it is also a fact that Headbomb has repeatedly demonstrated exactly how fallacious Thunderbird2's position is and also Headbomb has stated that the arguments deprecating IEC on Wikipedia make sense. My point being that when someone who personally likes IEC disagrees with Thunderbird2 then it demonstrates just how weak and fallacious Thunderbird2's arguments are. In conclusion there is no good reason to accept weak fallacious points of view in Wikipedia guidelines or policies. Fnagaton 03:19, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- Xenocidic, please note the number of “Binary” archives in the upper right-hand corner here on WT:MOSNUM. There are fourteen archives devoted to this one single issue of binary prefixes since Wikipedia’s failed experiment with the IEC prefixes was first implemented three years ago. Allowing the use of the IEC prefixes was the least successful, most bitterly fought issue in the history of MOSNUM. This whole issue was borne of nothing more than a battle between those who thought that Wikipedia should lead the by example in its adoption of the IEC’s prefix proposal even though no computer manufacturer on the planet uses them when communicating to a general-interest audience. On the other side of the fence was the editors who realized Wikipedia communicates best when it uses the same language, terminology, and unit symbols that are employed by all the general-interest computer magazines (and the computer manufacturers and manufacturers and sellers of aftermarket RAM). The arguments of the pro-IEC prefix crowd were considered and soundly rejected by the majority. MOSNUM is a much quieter place now and Wikipedia is much better off as a result of the new guideline. Were we to go back to what Thunderbird2 wants, there will be a 28th “Binary” archive three years from now. This issue is settled. He just isn’t accepting that reality. Greg L (talk) 03:40, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for the layman's translation of this dispute Greg, that's helpful. Thunderbird, I will initiate an AN thread to determine if there was any abuse of process in the blocking and subsequent unblock reviews: AN probably isn't the best place to continue the actual dispute about binary numbers, but perhaps it might rouse up an impartial 3RO for you. –xeno (talk) 12:50, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thread here: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive248#Requesting a review of my decline of an unblock request. –xeno (talk) 13:50, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- The issue is not settled as GregL would have u believe. An alternate view is that GregL and Fnagaton act in concert, avoiding the 3RR rule, but suppressing discussion of IEC Binary Prefixes in any and all relevant articles. A number of editors feel it is inappropriate to deprecate these prefixes but are unable to even put a dissent tag on an article. If you carefully examine this incident you will see a number of reverts by this cabal all acting to suppress discussion while breaking the intent but not the literal rule of WP:3RR. This is certainly not making Wikipedia much better off. BTW, you can expect a response from one or both of them, typically twice as long, repeating a series of falsehoods, misrepresentations, and/or non sequiturs. I won't waste the time or space responding, but I would appreciate any advice as to how to we get to civil discussion of this issue. Tom94022 (talk) 22:07, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- If mediation was refused, I think WP:RFC is the next appropriate step. –xeno (talk) 23:14, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- I see that the editors at AN are all saying you followed the rules, but I don't see anyone addressing the question of fairness (in the sense of equal treatment of equal sins), which for me was the important point. Thanks for trying, anyway. By the way, as I was feeling harrassed by Fnagaton, I thought I might learn something useful by trawling through his recent edit history. I discovered, amongst other things, that he has twice accused me of sockpuppetry,09:01, 19 July 2008 & 01:12, 27 August 2008 - thus strengthening my feeling of harrassment - without having informed me on either occasion. More to the point here though, the search confirmed my suspicions that he reported 5 reverts, one of which is pure fabrication. (Of the other 4, 3 are clear reverts and the 4th is debatable - but we've been through that). What I also discovered is that he used this diff as evidence that I knew about the 3RR rule. The edit is a warning by Fnagaton to an IP editor, on my talk page, but it gives the false impression that I had being warned previously for infringing 3RR. It's hard to imagine that he did not do so deliberately. Anyway, the admin swallowed the bait and the rest is history. Is there anything more that can be done now? Thunderbird2 (talk) 00:27, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
- Your block is fair because your edits are an abuse of tags as per the vandalism guideline link I gave earlier. As per the regulations for reporting sock puppets I don't have to notify you of the sock puppetry case until I have finished gathering evidence and I have filed it. The case against you that I am editing is still at stage 3 "Make your case" read here for the procedure and you will see stage 4 is "List your case for review" and stage 5 is "Notify the suspected users". The question about 3RR is not that you have been warned of 3RR but rather than you are aware of 3RR and obviously before the 3RR violation was filed against you you are aware of 3RR. Unless you wish to now claim that you knew nothing about 3RR before I filed the report? Fnagaton 03:26, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
- Xenocidic (reacting now to the notion of yet another WP:RFC), the only reason Fnagaton and I are lightning rods for T-bird’s wrath is we are active in keeping a watch on his edits to keep articles being turned into soapboxes for his advocacy of the IEC prefixes. We have no magic abilities to limit what is discussed on WT:MOSNUM and both Tom94022 and Thunderbird2 can make a pitch to change our guidelines anytime they like. Fnagaton, Headbomb, and I all worked like slaves for 81 days to arrive at a consensus opinion on WT:MOSNUM. In particular, Headbomb’s work should serve as the very paradigm of how discussion, debate, finding common ground, consensus building, polling, and voting should be conducted on Wikipedia. Now…
Given all that effort—and in addressing where T-bird should next go—it should come as no surprise that none of the three of us relish the notion of going into mediation. Why? Because compromise solutions are often the result in mediation. “Split-the-baby-down-the-middle” compromises were tried with the binary prefixes for much of the last three years and the result was that some articles used the unfamiliar and baffling “mebibyte” (MiB) whereas still other articles used the conventional terms like “megabyte” (MB). That was no way for an encyclopedia to operate—the term “megabyte” had a different meaning in different articles and even the proponents of the IEC prefixes agreed that they were entirely unfamiliar to the typical reader.
Now, several times in a variety of venues (T-bird forum-shops all over the place on this issue), I’ve challenged him not to mediation but to various forms of binding arbitration. My first challenge was here, where I suggested that we simply conduct a new huge, Wikipedia-wide vote on the issue and would have the debate and voting monitored by a three-member panel of arbitrators, who would merely ride herd to ensure the entire process was fairly conducted. In later challenges to T-bird and/or Tom94022, I proposed that the binding arbiters merely review the entire process that Headbomb did a Herculean effort overseeing (B11, B12, and B13), and simply rule whether or not it was properly and fairly conducted.
Headbomb, Fnagaton, and I, between us, have probably 60 man-hours invested in responding to T-bird in the various forums ever since the new MOSNUM guideline was adopted. No rule in a decent and civilized society requires this much leaning backwards for one editor who simply won’t let go. How many additional hoops should the Wikipedia community have to jump through? May I draw your attention to something? Over the course of a single, fourteen-hour period, T-bird made 74 edits to his sandbox, where he maintains a list of articles “damaged” because they no longer use the IEC prefixes. It even has a list of 56 incidences of “harassment.” And now he is saying he will no longer participate in en.wp because—really—he’s simply not getting his way. This is beginning to look like an unhealthy obsession.
I would propose that rather than inviting T-bird yet another forum to exploit (WP:RFC), that you simply invite him to go to WT:MOSNUM and propose that we convert all of Wikipedia to the IEC prefixes. This is in keeping with Dweller’s philosophy of “What consenting mathematicians get up to behind closed doors is their business, but please don't do it in public.” The proposal would be simple: all articles would only use “kibibyte” (KiB) and “mebibyte” (MiB) for denoting binary memory. It wouldn’t matter if no other general-interest magazine uses such terminology, Wikipedia will Lead the way to a brighter and better future via example.®™© And we’d be more consistent than we’ve ever been before. When we are in edit mode on an article, up at top, it would say “This page is 76 kibibytes long.” Editors can teach their spell checkers to ignore these terms, since all spell checkers flag the IEC prefixes as unrecognizable and the latest Microsoft dictionary of computer terms (print edition) doesn’t have them either. Headbomb, Fnagaton, and I would be free to speak up too on WT:MOSNUM, but largely, we’ll try to let others respond to his proposal. I’m hoping you will see just how well received Thunderbird’s proposal will be. If he won’t “let it go” after that, I would submit that it is time to start dealing with T-bird in a way that decisively goes to the heart of the problem. There… another post because of T-bird. Make that 60.75 man-hours. Greg L (talk) 00:43, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

- Xeno, please review these two edits by Headbomb [36] [37] because normally Headbomb has the patience of a saint and personally likes IEC, however Headbomb's edits go to show just how long Thunderbird2 has been carrying on this tactic of refusing to answer questions and provide substantive arguments. Could you please have a word with Thunderbird2 to get him to stop using his talk page sand box to misrepresent the situation and using it to harass myself and other editors? His recent actions of traweling my edits and taking lots of quotes out of context and misrepresenting them is uncomfortable unwanted attention from this user who refuses to accept consensus. Fnagaton 03:13, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
- I also note this latest misrepresentation by Thunderbird2 and demand he retract such an untrue accusation. The fact is that Thunderbird2 maintaining his version of events (most of it misrepresentation) on his talk page sand box and also maintaining a list of my edits and edits of other editors demonstrates that in fact Thunderbird2 is guilty of violating that link he posted. Also as Tom has just written with his edit he intends to "from now on I will carefully watch for unwarranted reverts by those two and support an editor trying to have a dialog.", which is actually in violation of that harassment and stalking link Thunderbird2 just posted. Just so you are clear Tom/Thunderbird2 it is harassment to declare that you will follow editors around Wikipedia with the objective of opposing them. This is yet more evidence of your bad behaviour Tom/Thunderbird2. Fnagaton 09:45, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Request for Rollback
Hi Xeno
Would you mind giving me rollback right? I've mostly been fighting vandals recently and that would really be a big help for it. Since my english is not too good to really contribute with much article content (lacking all those fancy special expressions one needs to use to write high-level encyclopaedic articles...), that's one thing I can help out with quite well. I've had over 300 edits here, I also have more than 4000 Edits on dewiki and I do have "editor" rights there (which includes rollback). --PaterMcFly (talk) 15:53, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sure. =) Just remember that it's used for blatant vandalism only. –xeno (talk) 16:26, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot. I do know that it must only be used for vandalism. I don't have twinkle (since I'm still using IE and they say it's not working that way), so it will be very helpful. --PaterMcFly (talk) 21:18, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Deletion Request
Xeno, would you mind deleting this page? It is a unnecessary page that is now a redirect to Vijendra Kumar. The IP creator has requested its deletion here. Thanks. Washburnmav (talk) 19:16, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- I think it's a perfectly reasonable redirect... if it was misspelled or something, deletion would be understandable... - Adolphus79 (talk) 19:19, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- I suppose, don't they (meaning pages with diff capitalization i.e. Eric clapton-> Eric Clapton) already redirect automatically? I don't really know this stuff I was just forwarding an IP's request. Washburnmav (talk) 19:31, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Mediawiki does automatically pick up on incorrect case, but since the redirect is already in place, there's no harm in leaving it lying around (and leaving it there actually takes up less space because we don't create an entry in the deletion log). –xeno (talk) 19:34, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

History merge
Hi Xenocidic. I posted a request on Philip's talk page and then saw your post on that same page about Proposal to discourage pagemove archiving. I didn't realize that this was controversial and do not know the ins and outs of the issue. I requested that the history of the archive pages for "Talk:List of events named massacres" be merged back into the main talk page (back into "Talk:List of events named massacres"). The history merge request is posted here. Since you seem to know the ins and outs of the issue, I think it would help to have your comments at the request. If you have a chance, please consider commenting here. Thanks. Suntag (talk) 19:43, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for handling recovery from the page vandalistic moves by Cyberdemon4. There appears to be one move left to undo, namely Good bacteria (& its talk page). Could you offer your opinion on the grammar in the above article? It has been nommed for FL status but is encountering resistance as the list entries are not technically complete sentences. I believe personally that it reads well, and it follows the same format as the FL List of Telecaster players. Apparently there are also similar published lists that follow this format. The discussion can be found here and a little here. Stalker opinions are also welcome. Washburnmav (talk) 18:03, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
- Featured content isn't really my area of expertise, but can't the sentences be unfragmented? Even though it would become a very repetitive ("...use(s)(d) a stratocaster."). –xeno (talk) 13:19, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi
Hi Xeno, can you re-instate my ACCT rights back on my account? I will be using it more often now. Thanks. --eric (mailbox) 04:12, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- eric, the ACC flag is not required to create accounts and is typically only granted to users who are participating in the ACC process and have hit the account creation throttle at least once. feel free to ask me or at WP:RFPERM once you are coming up against the throttle. –xeno (talk) 13:15, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
Jewish Newsletter
Hi Xeno-
Well, it's been a month and it's time again for the Jewish Newsletter to be delivered. Shep hasn't edited in a few days so I'm not sure he will be able to have Shepbot deliver it. Can Xenobot do it again this time? Tonight would be great but I understand if that's not enough notice. L'Aquatique[approves|this|message] 18:19, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sure can. Is it ready to go out? –xeno (talk) 18:32, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- Not as of right this minute but I'm working on it. I seriously procrastinated this month. However, it will be done by tonight. Thanks- L'Aquatique[approves|this|message] 18:36, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- Okay! Done. The newsletter is here: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Judaism/Newsletter (substed please) and the delivery list is here: User:L'Aquatique/wpjewlist (note the multiple sections). Anytime today or tonight would be perfect! Rav todot, L'Aquatique[approves|this|message] 20:24, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- Wait, wait! There's a typo in the version in your sandbox that I had updated apparently after you copied over! It's issue III not II. L'Aquatique[approves|this|message] 20:42, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hrm, k, that's easy enough to fix. –xeno (talk) 20:44, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for your help! L'Aquatique[approves|this|message] 22:04, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
