WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's   Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's   Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's   ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included   Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and   Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from   Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from   Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to   Czar (submissions) and   Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Help regarding template

I have added some new templates to New R. S. J. Public School infobo. But it is not showing. Please fix it.--Pratham 05:21, 5 May 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prathamprakash29 (talkcontribs)

@Prathamprakash29: I removed two of the categories you added, because they are redundant, and the social media - we only list official websites when they exist. I changed the infobox to "private" because that's what the text and now one of the categories say. We avoid inline links and you already had the link to Wikisource for the school song. But are you sure you have the right to surrender all copyright to the words of the school song by putting it on Wikisource?? (And you really don't need a sound file for the National Anthem - that's available at the article on it.) Yngvadottir (talk) 12:13, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
The school is both - private as well as public. When there is social media templates like google+ and facebook template available. Then why don't you allow it to be shown on infobox. Why did you removed the National Anthem listen. i saw it on -- The Doon School — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prathamprakash29 (talkcontribs) 13:01, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
It shouldn't be there either! If there is an official website, we use that. If there is not, we list one social media site instead - they are second best, and the school websites have links to them for anyone who is interested. Remember, this isn't a directory. Yngvadottir (talk) 13:14, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Also the logo of the school is little bit tilt. I want it to be straighten. Can you do it for me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prathamprakash29 (talkcontribs) 13:43, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) The tilt of the logo is present in the original on the website and therefore shouldn't be corrected. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 14:50, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

Ostrich

I noticed your reversion of the regional categories. It's been the unofficial practice for some time to aggregate locations for widespread species to avoid interminable lists of countries/states/provinces. A widespread species like Osprey or Peregrine Falcon could have 100+ country cats alone, even without, say, 50 US states, British counties, Canadian provinces etc. Up to you, just making the point that there is a logic to cat removal Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:06, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

@Jimfbleak: I've never seen this done before - I suggest you make a talk page entry about it if you haven't already. I have the page watchlisted because it attracts vandalism, but it has recently been expanded by several very knowledgeable people. I would have expetcted them to revamp the cats. if they were inappropriate, and they may well weigh in on the issue. Yngvadottir (talk) 13:36, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
OK, I'll do that Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:50, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Importance Scale

I want my school page to get rated on importance scale. So, please help me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prathamprakash29 (talkcontribs) 11:40, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

This is almost entirely done through the Wikiprojects; they assess both importance and quality. For WikiProject India, add the school to the list here. For WikiProject Schools, add it to the list here. Follow the instructions: it looks as if they both want you to put new requests at the bottom and in a similar format to previous ones, and to sign with ~~~~ - which you haven't been doing on talk pages :-) Yngvadottir (talk) 11:51, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

Maps

Can I add maps from wikimapia.org.--prathamprakash29 06:20, 11 May 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prathamprakash29 (talkcontribs)

Looking at WikiMapia#Licensing, I suspect not, because it would be derivative of Google Maps. That is presumably why you were recommended on your talk page to use Open Streetmap. But ask here. Remember to sign your post using ~~~~ - there should be an image to click if you don't have that symbol on the device you are using, or you can copy it from here and paste it in '-). Biography standards

Hi. The change I made is not a preference on my part; it is the recognised standard for biography articles (see WP:OPENPARAGRAPH. Many, many people get this wrong and I am having to make the fix frequently. For that reason, I feel that a brief edit summary should be adequate. I've just joined in the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biographies - which I found thanks to you. So, thanks! :-) Deb (talk) 09:24, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

If you can suggest more apposite wording, I'm quite open to trying it. However, it does need to be concise. Deb (talk) 12:47, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
Can you cut it down to two or three words, please? Deb (talk) 12:56, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
Well, I will try and think of something... Deb (talk) 13:15, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Marsden Wagner, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page JAMA (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I added picture but something is wrong. Can you help me, please? yes, Drmies must be making breakfast for the crowd., instead of working on this. Source was already in use; I moved the "saved by angels" to the end para and cited source again for good measure, but I can't see a good way to work in the stained glass windows, sorry. One source that we are already using, I forget which one, says that the church had been landmarked by the city before this happened; that could be put in if you can find it again, and you could put the stained glass windows there. But neither is really about the museum. And be careful, there is also an Episcopal church in the city dedicated to the same saint - we have a pic of it on Commons, but none of the Angel Museum church. Ah. I'm still puzzled as to why the two editors are bestowing this upon us, under two different titles, but I see someone at the AfD says it's from a book. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:22, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

Eh

GGrr. Who care about Swedish parishes? Are we going to fill the English Wiki with articles about Swedis parishes? Non notable parishes? If you want a notable parish, chose a good one, like Upsala parish. Hafspajen (talk) 15:27, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

He does, and so do other Swedish Christians, presumably :-) I think it makes more sense to cover the church under the parish, unless it is sensational architecturally, rather than having a separate article on it as the Swedish Wikipedia does. (This is different from Uppsala, for example!) But I am finding it hard to be enthusiastic about the vicars, I must admit. Mainly I guess I feel sorry for this new editor, and worried that he may not understand my explanation of notability. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:32, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

The Swedish wiki can do that, it is local notability. Just silly. But if you want to go for ANY Swedish parish, just choes the one that has bishops. Göteborg, Lund, Upsala, Stockholm. Upsala parish is the Swedish archbishop's parish. Ask him to do that one instead. But .. who cares. Are we going to write articles about the third tree that grows to the left from the city hall in Askersund or what. ... Hafspajen (talk) 15:35, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

You go talk to him :-) Every so often we get someone who thinks "encyclopaedia anyone can edit" means they can put in anything they find in any reference book. That's what seems to have happened here. At least he picked an old enough reference book that there's no copyright violation. I would have explained this at length shortly after I left my first message for him, but I had to dash off to work. (And then I got about 15 minutes of break and found people had already linked him to the notability policy without explaining the concept.) So I feel a bit sad about it all. Plus I was pretty sure you could think of something to ask him to write instead '-) Yngvadottir (talk) 15:43, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
Nä, send Peter Isotalo instead. He has much pondus on Swedish wiki. He is a Swedish admin. Hafspajen (talk) 15:48, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
Where does that come from? Peter may be fearsome, but he's not an admin. I don't think he ever was. Bishonen | talk 17:02, 24 May 2014 (UTC).
I should send Bishonen maybe :-) But in any case, I don't see sv:Uppsala socken, only sv:Gamla Uppsala socken, which seems to have been dissolved. Where is it on sv? Yngvadottir (talk) 15:50, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

sv:Uppsala domkyrkoförsamling, maybe. Hafspajen (talk) 15:53, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Merged into Uppsala pastorat effective 1.1.14. Now my eyes are crossing. Yngvadottir (talk) 16:00, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
Because the parish has a cathedral. Then it is called like this instead... Special parish. Hafspajen (talk) 16:04, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
@Bishonen: I don't know - I thought of linking to the Swedish version of the notability policy, but if someone prefers to work here rather than over there, that's their decision. I just feel bad for this guy, but I think he may have stopped reading anyway. (Victorlarsson). Yngvadottir (talk) 17:28, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

On the contrary, Swedish parishes should have articles (the historic versions with roots stretching back to the 12th century, not the parishes of the current state-separated Church of Sweden that are rapidly declining in number and increasing in size and have little stability of any sort), while places such as Huggle should probably just be listed within the parish articles. But it all depends on somebody caring to do it properly.

As for vicars, some have done significant things in addition to their vicaring (e.g. Pehr Osbeck) or have gone on to more exalted positions, such as bishoprics, but I don't see any of that among the Gunnilbo lot. Perhaps it was a poor parish that never attracted the most ambitious or gifted individuals. Either way, there is really no justification for posting Google-translated gibberish. --Hegvald (talk) 20:48, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

NO, defintly not. Do you know how many they are? See, here at this list: http://www.raa.se/publicerat/varia2011_43.pdf. No, do not start this. And parishes of the current state-separated Church of Sweden that are not declining in number. They are the same, just centalized. Hafspajen (talk) 23:50, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
You do realize that you are talking about Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia that has an article on every obscure 19-year-old footballer with a paying job? --Hegvald (talk) 07:54, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
(tps) I don't know if I got it right, but I estimate there's about 2,500 parishes listed in that pdf. In England there are 10,479 civil parishes, and about 12,000 Church of England parishes (Parish (Church of England) gives a figure of more than 15,600 for 1835). However look at this- List of civil parishes in England- isn't that disappointing? Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 21:51, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Just found out that you have to click on the relevant area of the map to get to the lists. Disappointed to find that I don't live in a parish. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 22:05, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Heh. Which of course led me to make 2 edits to the page covering the new London one ... Yngvadottir (talk) 04:23, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
I have tried to figure out what "tps" means here. Wikipedia's TPS page offers a large number of alternatives, such as Thermal protection system, Trailer Park Sex and Telangana Praja Samithi. Not one of those, I suppose? --Hegvald (talk) 11:50, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
LOL WP:Talk page stalker Yngvadottir (talk) 11:54, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Hafspajen asked for comments on this, but I don't think I have much to add. I wouldn't bother with parish articles myself, but neither am I opposed. The comment about articles on obscure footballers (not to mention cricketers) kinda sums up the issue.
And, no, I'm not an admin and never will be. Sv.wiki is likely aware that I would go rouge in a matter of days, unblocking "silly" anons and being a general nuisance. That, and I actually believe WP:IGNOREWP:IDONTLIKEIT. Besides, I'm too on-and-off lazy to be of any administrative use.
Peter Isotalo 20:46, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for stopping by. I'm actually one of the laziest, most feckless admins here, not to mention a technical incompetent. Oh well :-) I feel sorry for the editor in question, but the ball is in his court at this point - whether he starts editing on sv. instead or helps us out over here. I think the dust has mostly settled at Gunnilbo parish (unless my linguistic guesses on the talk page were totally off), but the biographies of vicars and curates (I'm guessing that's more accurate than chaplains in this case) are all gone. Yngvadottir (talk) 20:54, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
Gunnilbo parish looks pretty nice, actually!
My personal view is that anyone who can make it on English Wikipedia is better off editing here. Quality assessment on en.wiki eats sv.wiki for breakfast. It's easier to just write decent articles here and then simply translate your own prose (if the Swedish watchdogs allow it, that is). Though it might be different when it comes to parishes. That's kinda like sv.wiki's equivalent of WP:OMT and video game articles, ei the topic that has the most manpower (and I do mean manpower).
Peter Isotalo 07:17, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

User_talk:David_Hedlund, you stated that in providing citations, one should give "title and the publication, and preferably also the publication date (or retrieval date if none) and the author's name". I did not want to seem disrespectful at that page, but I would ask (strongly encourage) you to return to that page and provide him with WP help/policy links that give him instruction on the proper way to offer full citations. His edits span technical (Unix related) to current events, so something very general is in order. Note that in the venues where I edit, your description of an acceptable minimal citation would not be considered acceptable at all; Author name is always required, as are publication date and page numbers, and volume, year, and publisher where applicable. Why set the bar low, and then leave later editors to add [clarification needed], [full citation needed], [year needed], [volume & issue needed], or [page needed] tags when something something in the article proves[not specific enough to verify]? (Tags exist because expectations exist.) Le Prof Leprof 7272 (talk) 16:51, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

We have a plethora of articles where less than that has been provided, and many sources have no author. All the reflinks tool does is add a title. So I was trying to both cover all eventualities and to not overwhelm him :-) The guidance pages also tend to push citation templates, which can be overwhelming in their complexity - and variety. There is in fact no one "proper way", even if using templates. Feel free to jump in there with more assistance; but beware of giving the impression there's one preferred format, and also - from the sample I looked at, he tends to use less than stellar sources, and identifying where they come from is thus the most important thing. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:04, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

The previous seeming negative

I should also add I am a fan of yours, and of the attitudes you bring to this place (as evidenced by your discussing the citation issue with DH in the first place). Apologies if the foregoing was too forceful. (I am a "Inclusionist" when it comes to citations, mdr.) By the way, you may wish to have a quick look at the comments, made here [1]. You can see who I am (hidden though I keep it), by clicking on the Edit tab at my user page. Le Prof Leprof 7272 (talk) 17:00, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up regarding the deleted article; I have dumped a welcome template on the page of the editor concerned, along with advice. I know some regard those welcome templates as daunting, but I like them for the information they make accessible to newcomers, who have no reason to know in advance such things as how we define notability or where to ask for help. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:29, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

My article was rejected and I am getting very confused on the sources

Hello Yngvadottir,

I saw the video to cite sources, and there was an Edit Source page where you then went to the Named References page. There is no edit source page in the cite tab or above, and no named references, even through I named them. Many errors from the error check. I get confused very easily, and the person who said he'd help me has not. I read all the material you gave. The editor said it was not encyclopedic enough. I tried my best, truly. What would you do? Wait for someone to help, or do you think it's just the technical referencing confusion? Sorry to bother. Hallo. You might be interested in translating this from German, the ADB source is linked too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:01, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Will see what I can do - that's a long article in German, looks interesting too. I figured out where the Wikidata link was hiding, but I also have (a) the usual off-wiki chaos (b) continuing drafting about yet another gruesome subway accident (c) a watchlist that requires a machete (d) finally access to an academic article enabling me to do a long-promised rewrite. OK, I thought there was more chance of your translating it than User:Gerda Arendt who always seems preoccupied these days.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:45, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Most excellent! Well done! Perhaps User:Rosiestep can DYK nom?♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:57, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, glad you like it. I don't do DYK any more (although some folks have kindly included me in nominations), and I suspect it would need more footnotes. Since the legal terminology of the 16th-century Holy Roman Empire is outside my core competence, I didn't look for more; I took a quick look at the bio on Wikidata and didn't see any useful clarifications, but there may be some. Up to others, really, although as usual there are some tantalising red links - this time many are theologians, which is utterly not my bailiwick, so I won't be creating any of those articles, but someone should. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:03, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

I nomed it. A friendly FYI that I noticed some non-lede paragraphs are missing refs, which is one of the dyk rules. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:26, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

@Rosiestep: @Dr. Blofeld: I did say so - however I have now wrung refs out of the ADB entry (and changed a few details that were at odds with the account there). Yngvadottir (talk) 18:19, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Yngvadottir. Just letting you know that, since this user has proposed an acceptable username and has agreed not to use Wikipedia for advertising in the future, I've undone the block. Cheers, Yunshui  07:48, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) It seems potentially confusing for the new user to have a block template from 4 June below his accepted unblock request from 5 June? I moved the unblock below the block, hope that was ok. Please revert if I've merely confused the issue more deeply! Bishonen | talk 08:06, 5 June 2014 (UTC).
Thanks, both! I was offline - now on break at work. I saw the unblock request as I was on my way out and had intended to accept it if no one else got to it by now. The user clearly doesn't know new talk page posts go under old ones; I'll drop him a welcome template after they change their name, again if no one else does, and add a note about that. Aww, thank you! That's a happy ending. I have no idea whether being a Eurovision host in itself confers notability, but I suspected it might be an honour conferred on people who have reached a certain level of distinction, and luckily I found enough reliable sources to substantiate that that was the case (I was afraid the material would not be online, or that Google would refuse to let me see it, although I found some sweet fan pages that I of course couldn't use) - and now we have an article on an accomplished woman and the readers can decide for themselves about the significance of the Eurovision gig. Do you think the Symphony of the New World Article is ready to resubmit?

Dear Yngvadotir,

I have followed Xanthomelanoussprog's fantastic help from your suggestions in giving the article sections. I think I figured out the reference syntax, and added a few corrections and other references. Do you think the Symphony of the New World article meets Wikipedia's standards now, and I should resubmit it? With many thanks for your time. Barbara.steinberg — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barbara.steinberg (talkcontribs) 05:59, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

  • There's a problem with the ref section which I can't fix- there's urls pointing to images on Barbara's blog. I can't edit them because (according to a notice on the page) if I click "save" the article gets resubmitted for evaluation! (article looks good to me, Barbara's done a great job) Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 07:04, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
  • I resubmitted the article, so perhaps your saving the page won't have that problem and I can fix the references? I have no other place to put them on my server except with my blog url: http://barbaraanneshaircombblog.com/images/symphonyofthenewworld/... That is the way my server is set up. They are .jpg images of original documents, the photos of which I took. All of these documents are at the Schomburg Library for Research and Black Culture in NYC, but not online. The references are not blog posts. I am not sure what else to do. Thank you for saying I did a good job. I just had a nice conversation with Terrence McKnight of WQXR. A lot of people are looking forward to this page. :-) Is there any instruction on what I should do with the references? Ah, confusion... Best regards, Barbara.steinberg (talk) 11:18, 6 June 2014 (UTC) Barbara.steinberg
|== Thank you so much. I tried doing your reference syntax ==

The url you suggested

Joan Peyser, "The Negro in Search of an Orchestra", The New York Times, November 26, 1967, page image online by permission at Symphonyoftheworld.com.

I can't do it because symphonyofthenewworld.com is still a wordpress blog. I did not see your code. But I uploaded the flyer to wikimedia commons and used this link

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Photograph-of-a-flyer-made-by-the-symphony-of-the-new-world-from-a-1967nytimesarticle.jpg%7Cpublisher=New York Times

You are correct. You would have had to be a NY Times subscriber to see the T link.

I must tell you, I suffer from confusion, and this is very difficult. I am just going to pray they accept the article and fix whatever they need to fix. So you have a job, and can help in these painful edits with such alacrity? Well, you're a better man than me. Best regards, and many thanks. I'll let you know what happens. Thank you so very much.

I'll respond at your talk page. I've made your reference syntax visible here, so that my talk page stalkers can possibly help too - and I'm removing that submitted tag because otherwise there will be a confused bot :-) Yngvadottir (talk) 19:08, 6 June 2014 (UTC
|Hello again. Thank you so much again. The article is here: Categories: AfC submissions by date/03 June 2014. That's good news, I think. I wanted to add a reference to a quote but I don't dare. I guess I should just wait. It was a reference to the quote from the last fundraising letter in the section "End of the Orchestra." And the syntax would be this, I think: [2]

I should just wait until they make a decision and add it later? I added the book, as you suggested. Barbara.steinberg (talk) 19:12, 7 June 2014 (UTC) Barbara.steinberg

|Thank you so much for writing back. I added the reference and another picture to wikipedia commons, which I inserted in the article. It is a picture I took of a flyer for a community concert. My father, Benjamin Steinberg

I just looked at the article. I was astounded at how good it was. The only thing I did was to add the Allgero Open to All named reference where it said [citation needed]. It is so much more professional looking, I was astounded. Who did this? I asked myself. So it was your talent. Thank you. I have no words to thank you.

Oh yes, he's notable. All his non-Symphony of the New World papers are at the Lincoln Center branch of the NYPL. The SONW was the last thing he did before he died. Everyone seems to only be interested in that but there is so much more. He did Broadway with Lenny Bernstein, who was a good friend. Zero Mostel was one of his best friends. I have paintings by him all over my house. In the 1940's he gave painter Frank Neal a loan to start a tray business. Frank Neal was a great painter. I have paintings by him all over my house. Original oils.

He was a child prodigy, giving his first town hall recital when he was 9. Then he played with the NYA Orchestra. I will give you a link to a sound file of him playing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, third movement, from that time. My mother saved the glass records. Then there was the ballet. He was with ABT. He conducted the premiere of Balanchine's Theme and Variations with Alicia Alonso and Igor Youskevitch. They were very good friends. There was a tour he did with them with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Fernando Alonso had slept with a corps member. Alicia was so furious, she threw him out of bed, and he had to go sleep with my father. My mother slept with Alicia.

At the Lincoln Center branch, there are letters from her. Like Coco before Chanel, there is Alicia before Alonso. She was stuck in Argentina. Two dictators before Castro, the Cuban government used to give her $5000 here, $2000 there. So she wrote these letters, and they are extraordinary. Then Fidel gave her $100,000, and we went to Cuba. I have photos of the audience that filled the stadium when the Ballet Nacional de Cuba first premiered after the Revolution. I grew up in Castro's elite in Cuba from 1959 - 1963. He was the ballet's first conductor, and I have pictures of that, too.

But in between that, there were the McCarthy hearings. My father conducted the Symphony of the Air, and they accused him of spreading Communist propaganda on their tour of Japan. He never went on that tour. So he sued the State Dept. Zero was a co-defendant. They won. And the Lincoln Center library has those papers. Thats where he and Zero became friends. His testimony in front of McCarthy is great because he basically told them to go to hell. But another interesting thing about that trial is that his lawyer was Leonard Boudin. (He used to come visit us in Cuba and bring me chocolates :-). Leonard Boudin is Kathy Boudin's father, Kathy Boudin, the weatherman. What happened to her killed Leonard. Zero gave my father a painting of a clown with an ace of spaces coming out of a blow tube. That was a present for him when they won the trial. Zero took the 21st amendment -- the repeal to prohibition. ha ha. My father took the first amendment.

He was a great man, a great musician, and it is an honor to be his daughter. It is difficult for me to write about the SONW because I watched him die from 13 1/2 to 15, and all the SONW means to me is death. I'm trying to write it for everyone else, to whom it meant so much more.

I am going to NYC July 8 - 15. I will be going to the Lincoln Center branch to take pictures of many documents. Here are two, and here is the sound file. There is a lot more to his life than the obit.

http://symphonyofthenewworld.com/2014/01/11/source-material-for-wikipedia/

You will see the Peter Pan program, which I added to Leonard Bernstein's page. I also want to add the letter at some point. There is also a picture of a concert featuring Sanford Allen. He was the first black musician in the New York Philharmonic.

This is my father playing in 1941. People were kind enough to transcribe it. http://barbarasdreams.com/audio/TchaikovskyViolinConcerto3rdMov-Ben-Steinberg-Soloist%20(1).mp3

Cheers, and thank you so much for your help. I am very close to this, and the objective eye is needed so much.

Thank you, again.

Draugr

Take a look at my talk page User talk:Dougweller#You might be blocked - the IP whose edit you just reverted. Dougweller (talk) 18:30, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Hmm. It's a pity someone with such good grammar is focussing so heavily on inserting their opinion into articles, but then again, as you implied, the edit I reverted just inserted clunkiness. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:36, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Rewritten "Shroud"

I can't imagine that I contradicted myself. I'm sure I said "one of" and indicated that the material should be, for example, cotton, linen, or wool. It is CRYSTAL-CLEAR (per the Torah) that only ONE material is to be used: indeed, in ANY sort of clothing, the proscription applies.

However, thank you for rewriting what appeared unclear. I shall examine it and tell you what I think (momentary pause) . . . I did look at it, and you added an extraneous "that," which also destroyed parallelism: so much for your "correction" of your previous victim after mocking his grammar (I'm sure you'll presently complain about my erudite use of a colon just <--- there).

Funny how said victim (LOL) wrote about "draugr": he must have watched the same two-hour special about zombies on H2 that I just watched last night! I think I'll add the proper pronunciation as a lagniappe to Wikipedia users. FYI, 'au' is a diphthong that sounds the same as 'öj', to wit, 'ö' (like an extended 'ur' in 'purpose', sans 'r') plus 'j' (viz., the interpretation of 'j' in most Germanic languages, akin to English consonantal 'y').

50.128.184.140 (talk) 21:05, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I see the extra "that" there; that was stupid of me, thanks for simplifying. But we still need a reference for the full costume.
Who do you mean by my "previous victim"? I hope I don't mock; I think the prevalence of mockery and snideness is a serious problem here on Wikipedia.
I'm afraid I've had to revert your well informed edit adding pronunciation at draugr; as I explained in my edit summary, that's the modern Icelandic pronunciation, which is not particularly applicable. Yngvadottir (talk) 21:27, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

@A.Minkowiski: You're doing the right thing talking to the admin who deleted it, Nick. I have told the editor who originally tagged it that in addition to using the wrong tag, he tagged it much too soon. However, I advise you to accept Nick's offer and have it restored where you can continue to work on it out of main space and then ask for it to be moved back - somewhere like Draft:AR.Freeflight or User:A.Minkowiski/AR.Freeflight. Since it has been speedy deleted once, it's problematic to simply undelete it; his offer is what we normally do in such cases. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:17, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Lotta Lotass and the Swedish Literature Bank

This is something that may interest you: Author Lotta Lotass, a member of the Swedish Academy and known in Wikipedia as User:Lotta Lotass, posted an article on the Swedish Literature Bank (Litteraturbanken in Swedish. It didn't take long before it was speedily deleted as "Unambiguous advertising or promotion". It is a non-profit project sponsored by the most prestigious cultural institutions in Sweden. Sources are out there when searched for under the Swedish name. (BTW, Språkbanken has also been deleted, but that was back in 2011.)

Somebody needs to tell Lotta Lotass to write about truly important topics, such as professional wrestlers or local American radio stations. All this unambiguous promotion of free access to classic Swedish literature stuff might mislead the youth or something. --Hegvald (talk) 20:00, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

Well, sorry to disagree but Litteraturbanken (not like some obscure parishes) is quite an important issue. Not promotion at all. it was initiated by Sven Lindqvist, involving some of the most serious academic institutions... Fail to see how this issue is promotion. Actually blushing on behalf on the Wikipedia to treat a member off the Swedish Academy like this. Hafspajen (talk) 20:23, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
By the way, the members of the Swedish Academy are the one who decide who will got next Nobel prize in litterature. Not unimportant either. Hafspajen (talk) 20:24, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
Hafspajen, I understand your deeply felt need to stress these valuable points, but you should probably do that at User talk:Vanjagenije or User talk:Bbb23? They are not doing much good here, as I am sure that Ms. Yngvadottir is already well aware of the importance of the Swedish Academy. (And I have absolutely no idea how the parishes are relevant here.) --Hegvald (talk) 21:46, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
I've been searching for sources I can show to the deleting admin. If it gets undeleted, I'll need help from you Swedish experts to find more; I don't know of a Swedish equivalent for www.kvasir.no. (Also I am late for bed again, argh argh argh.) Hold on a minute while I ask if we can have it back to ref up. Yngvadottir (talk) 20:29, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps I shouldn't have come to you with this, but I thought it was up your alley, so to speak. I wasn't in the mood of writing a new article, and I can't access the original article, which as far as I can remember wasn't all that bad. --Hegvald (talk) 21:46, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

OK. Hafspajen (talk) 20:30, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

  • @Hegvald and Hafspajen: OK, I've made my case. I will now start preparing for bed. If it reappears and I appear to be away from my keyboard, could one of you please let Ms Lotass know? (Språkbanken will have to wait - I have another 2 nights' work before my "weekend".) If it does not get undeleted, I will really need help, to write an entirely new article with one metric tonne of independent sources. Yngvadottir (talk) 20:47, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
Done. Hafspajen (talk) 20:49, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
@Hegvald: No, I'm glad you did. I just don't have as much time on Saturday and Sunday as other people do. The word is to go ahead and restore it and fix it myself, but I don't know whether I'll have time until after work. There was close paraphrasing too; see the deletion rationale; so I'll have to rewrite immediately to eliminate that. Hafspajen, I'm making sure you see this also :-) Yngvadottir (talk) 04:02, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

As the editor who tagged the article for speedy deletion, I think I should explain what happened here. The first version of the article, the one that was speedily deleted, did not contain any credible claim of significance, did not have any reliable sources and was written in an overly promotional style. As such, it fully qualified for the speedy deletion under both WP:G11 and WP:A7 criteria. If anybody has some reasons to say that the article did not qualify for deletion under G11 and A7, please say so. Talking about how this organization is important, and how it is sponsored by "prestigious cultural institutions" is totally pointless. The article was not deleted because the subject is not important; it was deleted because it did not explain why the subject is important, nor did it cite any sources to prove the subject is notable. Wikipedia has very strict criteria for speedy deletion and this article fully qualified at that moment. I think the remark by User:Hafspajen made here is very rude. Articles on Nobel Prize and Swedish parliament are both well referenced and both clearly explain the significance of their subjects, so the comparison is senseless. Vanjagenije (talk) 18:47, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

It was deleted as promotional and containing copyvio. However, I hope you can now see notability demonstrated? All's well that ends well, I hope ... however, I would say to be careful with projects of this nature, with backers like this (and missions as non-commercial as this). My suspicion is that you were misled by words like "classics" - which refer to the literary canon. You may also want to look at my request for undeletion at Bbb23's talk page. this is the kind of thing that makes me glad they made me an admin - being able to see it as well as to look for sources in Swedish helped a great deal in sorting this out. If, as I hope, you agree it's now been sorted out! Yngvadottir (talk) 18:54, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
For me the comparison made much sense. Hafspajen (talk) 18:58, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Of course, I agree that it is all OK now. The article is well sourced and not promotional any more. I just wanted to say that it is rude to attack me for doing new pages patrol according to rules. I did nothing wrong, I did not breach any Wikipedia policy. The WP:Burden of notability and verifiability lies with the editor who creates the article, not with me. The fact that the author of the article is well known person has nothing to do with the quality of the article because the Notability is not inherited. And the fact the organization is non-profitable is also irrelevant per WP:NPROF. I think I deserve at least an apology from Hafspajen for attacking me without any evidence to prove that I have not followed WP:CSD in the case of this article. Hafspajen (talk) 21:12, 22 June 2014 (UTC) Thanks, Hafspajen, I'll save my wet trout for later :-) Vanjagenije (talk) 22:11, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

(edit conflict)This is the original version that you tagged. The deleting admin agreed with you (and also spotted copyvio that I missed), but ... I still can't see the promotion, sorry. Also, although quite reasonable, that's an essay - and it's about notability. It's possible that I am just being blinded by the likely notability (a raft of high-powered learned organizations are doing a project similar to Project Runeberg, but tied in with modern scholarship ...); and I can of course go over to sv.wikipedia and see their fuller account. But I admit freely, I don't do New Page Patrol for the same reason I don't review at Articles for Creation; I'm kind of tender-hearted about articles, and my first instinct is to find sources to show notability. From my perspective, all I did was that, plus the expansion that that permitted, plus summarizing where the original editor had (accidentally?) copied a passage. I guess I diluted what seemed promotional? Yngvadottir (talk) 21:17, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
As I said, you did nothing wrong, actually you made very useful step by saving the article and editing it to add reliable sources and to remove copyvio. I completely support your efforts regarding this article. I tagged it for speedy deletion under WP:A7, as it really had no indication of importance. Deleting admin added WP:G11 (promotion) and copyright issues. I guess the reason he called the article promotional is that it had no reliable sources, only source given was the official web site of the subject, which the article paraphrased. Article with no credible claim of significance and with text copied from official web site is usually considered spam (as indicated in WP:ADMASQ). But, again, I only tagged the article for WP:A7. Copyedited by scholars

Hi there Y-daughter, thanks for your work on Swedish Literature Bank. Looking good! The "copyedited by scholars" bit is a little unclear to me, though. I appreciate that there are some secondary texts in the bank — "vederhäftiga översikter och presentationer"[2] — but surely the main content is older literary works, which nobody's likely to copyedit. ("Lemme see, I don't think Selma Lagerlöf put that very well... I'll just modernise the syntax and shorten it a bit.") Are you sure it shouldn't be "proofread"? Or that scholars have added explanatory notes or something? Copyediting on Wikipedia, at least, is a pretty radical process. Just check out Central University of Haryana before and after User:RexxS copyedited it… :-) I assume the source is Swedish? Bishonen | talk 10:45, 23 June 2014 (UTC).

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad I was able to help with this one, especially since it's been a rotten few days in other respects. As to "copyedited" vs. "proofread", that may at least in part the result of my usage - I don't make much of a distinction. To me "proofread" comes from the milieu of book publishing and "copyedit" from the milieu of newspapering and both describe rather less than what in a university context would be called "editing". I may be wrong about that, and it's also entirely possible that I made a mistake in translation! But the source is the one cited at the end of the next sentence, the Dagens Nyheter article, specifically this bit comparing it to Projekt Runeberg: "ett ideellt projekt som har 1 825 böcker i sitt arkiv. Fast bara ett femtiotal av dem är helt genomarbetade och korrekturlästa. Det står öppet för vem som helst att hjälpa till med jobbet att läsa igenom. På Litteraturbanken sköts samma uppgifter av litteraturvetare". There's also a statement on their own website about the preparation of the actual text. So go ahead and make it more accurate. Yngvadottir (talk) 13:11, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) "Copy-editing" changes the text, sometimes dramatically, since it often involves shuffling pieces of text around, and even adding or deleting content, while "proofreading" only involves correcting obvious typos and minor grammatical mistakes, without changing the text. So they're not in any way synonymous. Scanned and digitized text is always proofread since the digitized copies always include lots of "typos" introduced by the scanning software, especially in scanned copies of older books (if you look at "raw" scans of digitized books at "Projekt Runeberg" you'll find that there are lots of scanning software introduced "typos" in them...). Just my 2p. Thomas.W talk 13:20, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I may be incorrect in using them pretty much interchangeably; I reckoned it was primarily OCR errors in the Runeberg case, but the Literature Bank are also providing a scholarly apparatus of intro and notes, and for all I know more than that (correction of printers' typos?) I'll leave it up to others to fix it in accordance with the source(s) :-) Yngvadottir (talk) 15:01, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
"Scanning software introduced 'typos'" is another way of saying "OCR-errors". That's what they're correcting at Projekt Runeberg, and since OCR-errors are unavoidable in all scans of printed books, particularly older ones, they must have lots of them at Swedish Literature Bank too. The problem with letting anyone correct the errors, like at Projekt Runeberg, is that there's always the risk of having someone introduce new errors, from simple misreadings of words to deliberate vandalism, which I'm sure is why the Swedish Literature Bank chose to let only professionals do the job. Thomas.W talk 15:16, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
Yes, that's how I understood the source - plus the Literature Bank is adding apparatus. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:21, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) For OCR errors at their ripest, try a Google Books search for "with open anus" (in quotes). Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 15:48, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
That's a classic, "arms" being misread as "anus" by OCR software, making the text a bit "hotter" than originally intended (as in "she welcomed him with open ****"). Thomas.W talk 15:59, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Baron du Potet

This is all your fault, so I expect you to help. I declined a speedy delete on this article (then differently named) because of the existence of an article about the subject on the French wiki. I'd like to at least take some of the sourced material from the French article and import it here, but even though I speak French, it's tough: very technical and rather odd stuff. Maybe you could do some work on it? Or someone else you know? The creator of the article is appreciative that the article wasn't deleted, but it doesn't sound like he wants to or is equipped to work on the article himself (I suggested it to him on his talk page). Even the little bit of work I did on the article was tiring (I know, complain is my middle name). Up to you, of course, but please let me know what you decide. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:15, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Oh, I can speak Japanese. The problem is the writing...

No Japanese precision walk? Hafspajen (talk) 10:58, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

I only see blogs, and that mismatch in translations is a problem. Any newspapers? I can't read Japanese. Yngvadottir (talk) 13:12, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
Googling seriously now, here's one: ITN. They transliterate it Shudankodo and they do translate it "collective action"; I notice the Japanese article has "See also"s including school physical education, after-school clubs, parades, and marches. And that we don't have an article on precision marching, which this is a variant of. This and this might be usable to establish notability; here The Telegraph covers the original viral video in 2010. Ah, here's the one that puts it over the top. Take it away, talk page stalkers. Yngvadottir (talk) 21:11, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Looks as if the creator never got around to adding the gazetteer. They have been notified and are active, so they can remove the prod and/or add more to it, but I don't see the harm in an unfinished book. You could suggest to them that they move it into userspace: User:Amandajm/Books/The Architecture of Ancient Greece ... ? Yngvadottir (talk) 12:17, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Ahem, Amandajm... Hafspajen (talk) 12:28, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Ah, now I see it links to their sandbox ... still, yes, I noticed who created it. (being dense, I fear, sorry.) Yngvadottir (talk) 12:32, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
But if they delete this one, she will not be able to re-create it, or? Hafspajen (talk) 12:48, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
I don't see why she couldn't. But I believe it's just a thing that links to her sandbox - no deletion of the sandbox involved. Anyway, she can easily save it by removing the prod, if she wants to. Yngvadottir (talk) 12:51, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Yes, they can deleted it, as it isn't directing to the right part of my sandbox anyway! I'll create the book again. Amandajm (talk) 02:42, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Weird lead

Do you understand what the lead say in this article, Alexander Adriaenssen? I tried to re-formulate, but might have made it worse. Hafspajen (talk) 13:10, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

I'm at work and have just about run out of break, but I checked all the other languages except Polish and the "purity of colour" seems to be unique to our version, so I will have to see whether I can find the cited passage online. I don't think you mucked it up but since I may wind up replacing it with something else entirely, I won't muck with it till I get home. If you find the book passage online before I get to it, feel free to change it :-) Yngvadottir (talk) 13:27, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

If I would only understand what the heck it means. Those colours are not pure. They are brown and muddy... Hafspajen (talk) 13:39, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

That's usually ascribed to old varnish, when it isn't ascribed to taste (see: Rembrandt), but the article should now be a lot more informative. Sadly I cannot see The Magic of things : still-life painting, 1500–1800 either. Yngvadottir (talk) 16:23, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 June newsletter

After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's   Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C,   Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.

The round saw this year's first featured portal, with   Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to   12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from   Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from   Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of   Sven Manguard (submissions).

The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. Good luck! June 2014

Welcome to Wikipedia. We welcome and appreciate your contributions, including your edits to The Law of One (Ra material), but we cannot accept original research. Original research also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. Thank you. jps (talk) 18:49, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for templating the regulars. Could I ask you to discuss this at the article talk page rather than personalizing it by posting here? Maybe you already have. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:55, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
We all get regularly templated (DrMies has returned the favor). I don't know at all what inspired you to revert. It is entirely unclear what "excessive cutting" is supposed to mean in your edit summary. When a user removes unreliably sourced material and original research, I cannot see why that's "excessive". After all, that's part of the basic rules of how Wikipedia operates. jps (talk) 19:32, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
Don't be an ass, jps. Note where it says "With my apologies for the template". And when I typed that I didn't even realize to what extent you were a regular: I guess I just could have skipped the warning and blocked you rightaway. Which I didn't. So you're welcome. Wait--it doesn't say in policy that someone should thank someone else for doing them a favor, so never mind! Drmies (talk) 02:36, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
Are you in the habit, Drmies, of blocking people for reverting you? Don't see where WP:ADMIN allows that. Hmm... jps (talk) 03:21, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
Don't be a dummy. I could have blocked you instead of reverting you. So stick that "hmm" where the sun doesn't shine. Drmies (talk) 04:49, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
An interesting approach, I guess. Would you have claimed it was discretionary sanctions? I suppose reverting a revert is a violation of 1RR, but I wasn't aware we had a 1RR rule on that page. I find sunshine to be a great disinfectant, incidentally. jps (talk) 05:14, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
The editors of the article need to discuss your definition of unreliably sourced material and original research. Per WP:BRD. I trust you have opened up a section for that purpose while I was afk? Yngvadottir (talk) 20:24, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
WP:RS is clear as is WP:FRIND. There is nothing to discuss. jps (talk) 22:35, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
I'm afraid that's just not so, especially in view of the Arbcom decision. This kind of disagreement is why articles have talk pages. Yngvadottir (talk) 04:10, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Help

Yngvadottir, can you check if this indeed a copyvio thing? [4] My first rection was that someone tries to blow up this holy-fool thing about Rasputin again. And if it IS copyvio, one can simply reword it, - but I would like to know in what way this is identical with one or another text. Hafspajen (talk) 18:19, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

If it is, I can't find the source. The trouble is, there have been so many books written about Rasputin ... the wording does look suspicious, but I cannot find where it is from if it is indeed copied. Who says it is? Can you ask them? Yngvadottir (talk) 19:04, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

It is an IP. Why don't you ask em? You are the admin... I mean, I think - that it might be same editor we had the fuss about Rasp not being a holy fool. Just a hunch. If I ask, I might make things worse. And he reverted me no comment. Hafspajen (talk) 19:10, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

I had a look at the article history and he provided the source in his edit summary when he removed the material previously: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2000/mar/18/biography.isobelmontgomery - a review of one of those books. He's right, it's too close. Paragraph beginning "However, as Radzinsky demonstrates, Rasputin was more complex and more substantial than the myths that grew up around him." and the one after that. I suggest you summarize the point, with a footnote mentioning both the review article and the book it's reviewing, then post on the talk page about what happened. The IP should have taken it to the talk page. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:16, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
AH, good detective work. Hafspajen (talk) 19:18, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
How shall I summarize it? Hafspajen (talk) 19:23, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
(edit conflict) This is approximately 99% not my topic. But at a glance, the point is that he was not mad, nor a monk, but how he came to have such power over the imperial family has to be understood in that Russian mystical tradition - including its belief in a bond between the common people and the imperial family. Added: if you don't already have his childhood nickname and when he left home, you can reference those to that double source, too. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:29, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Nä, nä- grammar then.

Hafspajen (talk) 19:44, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Is it good now? Can I add it back? Hafspajen (talk) 19:45, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

I don't know what to do. See it as an encyclopedic text . (Don't ask you to became an Ortodox...) Hafspajen (talk) 19:54, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
WELL; added back. Also noted that IP doesn't ONLY removed copyvio, but EVERYTHING, other references and all sentences about Rasp, - even that that was not affected by this. Hafspajen (talk) 20:23, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Still too close, I'm afraid :-( The best way to avoid close paraphrasing is to summarise - make it half that length or less. However, I'm sure other editors are looking there and will help. Yes, Rasputin belongs in that article. Yngvadottir (talk) 04:03, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
Now? You mean - right now? How can it be too close now? That was etirely my words. Yeah, right Hafspajen (talk) 20:16, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
(After edit conflict) I reverted the edit you had referred to, with a long edit summary. I suggest you find a better place for that link to point to; look at the history of the section it points to, there may be material that was put in a different article. As for Rasputin, I am really really not someone who should edit Fool for Christ. You may be able to get some ideas from the actual Rasputin article, or there may be someone else who can help you out, but my recommendation would be to summarise - half the length you have above, or less. That's the easiest way to avoid close paraphrasing, and you can easily find other sources if there is more you want to say about Rasputin. (You can adapt bits from the article on him so long as you clearly say in the edit summary that that is what you are doing.) Yngvadottir (talk) 20:32, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
  • 2)Yngvadottir, I am the religious expert, don't worry. And I had my fights with that editor, the actual Rasputin article's talk page is full of our discussions, when he - a great article owner - , repetedly removed a simple mentioning the fact that he was part of this tradition, against thousands of references, lots of fights, both me ans Jonathan. We were fighting agains him in a quite bad way. No, there is nothing to pick up there. And my guess is that he is on vacation, trying to remove this so he can later remove the parts he doesn't like from his article. My only question WAS - is it OK now with the copyvio. Hafspajen (talk) 20:50, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
As you see, I changed the link in the other place :-) And this, I am afraid, will be my last edit today - I'm late for bed. I'm very sorry to say that the version you put above was still too close to the original. If you haven't done so already, and can't find anyone else, hack it down to look like the summary I originally gave you here. Then re-expand it with information from Google Books: there are about a dozen books about Rasputin that you can use to reference the details. If you draw on many sources, it will wind up not being close to the wording of any. I appreciate the point about the history at the main article about him - that is a shame, because he is indeed a major, much studied example of this phenomenon. But I avoid editing articles on certain religions - many religions, really - for my own reasons. Talk page stalkers, can you help out with this please? Yngvadottir (talk) 21:04, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Hafspajen (talk) 02:40, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

So, is THIS above a copyvio ? I am not asking to edit any religion, just to check if it is OK with the source. I did my best to reword. Hafspajen (talk) 14:48, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
I'm really sorry to let you down :-( I hope someone else stepped in. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:44, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
Rasp is no problem any more, but you can try to save me now maybe. Hafspajen (talk) 18:07, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
You mean at Still life? I didn't get the ping from your talk - apparently it only works if the user name is added in a new signed edit. I've had a look, but you seem to be holding your own, especially with Peter Isotalo supporting you as being willing to discuss on the talk page. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:30, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
I feel harrased by now. It is simple guidlines and the guy just keeps telling me I am bossy and agressive. Can't you explain to him on his talk page how people are supposed to interact? The more the better. You are good with newbies. If there are no others telling him about the rules he will go on harrasing and targeting ME. Hafspajen (talk) 18:33, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
What do we need this one when we have Painting? Hafspajen (talk) 12:05, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
I agree, so I redirected it before anyone but the creator had put time into it. I left a note at the Wikiproject and at her page; it's now up to her and you all in the project to decide whether we need this fork, and if so to revert me and expand it (and make it clear at painting that there is a main article on paintings. Yngvadottir (talk) 12:29, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
Not really an article, but a STUB. Because nothing really is in that article that is not said in the other. I think it was a wise decision. Hafspajen (talk) 12:41, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
I thought so, or I wouldn't have done it - I hate rolling up someone's work like a carpet, and stubs can always be expanded; some people usually start with a stub, just as some people build it up before putting it in mainspace. But the creator has posted cogent reasoning at the project talk page; if you haven't already, please consider getting involved there, it's not my project, the category system makes my head spin, and in short, it's perfectly possible we should have this (although I do think it would have been wiser to leave it for another project member to tag the talk page). Thanks for your help with the Istancool wiki page. You have improved it. Some people tried to vandalise it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.217.154.20 (talk) 01:29, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

You're welcome. I looked because I saw your message at User talk:ClueBot Commons, and I have left messages for the three editors (who may be the same person). But I don't think it should be called vandalism, because I think they were trying to update it. I hope they will leave it alone now that I have updated it; or add more references. Hey Thanks so much for your input I do have a reference on him from News paper the bronx News but the article is not online how do i go about citing it? thanks in advance--Stone2ypr (talk) 05:18, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Use template Cite news, as you have been doing, but leave the URL field empty. Yngvadottir (talk) 05:22, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi there hope all is well, for some odd reason i received a proposed deletion from logical cowboy stating its promotional in nature, i think that's simply untrue, i have no idea why but what should i do about this? thanks in advance for any help in addressing this matter --Stone2ypr (talk) 16:11, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

@Stone2ypr: I see you have now removed the PROD. I found you had added a new section that was way too close to the wording of the source article - it is advisable to not copy-paste text into Wikipedia even as a first step to paraphrasing, because it makes it far too easy to not change it enough. Summarize it. The added reference helps, but not much, because that news source does not look very reliable. As I said earlier, the article is weak on sourcing; my estimation is that he just squeaks by under the general notability guideline, but another article about him in a newspaper or magazine would make a world of difference. I tend to agree with Logical Cowboy that he does not meet the standard for entertainers. It is likely that the article will now be AfD'd. If that happens, keep calm, make an argument at the discussion, and search for that one additional good source. The suggestion that you have a conflict of interest is separate; we all start out somewhere, usually with a topic we have an interest in, and even if you do have a conflict of interest, the article should be judged on its own merits. I hope these thoughts are helpful! Yngvadottir (talk) 16:46, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks it seems that a new section was added but not a contribution of mine, in fact i was in the process of changing it to something else as it looks copied indeed, personally i think the entire topic is irrelevant, should i delete it? thanks again--Stone2ypr (talk) 16:53, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Ah, that wasn't you? No, leave it in - I've summarized it. But now that the article has indeed been AfD'd, beat the bushes for any additional 3rd-party references you can find - including more on his personal life, since we now have a section on that. Yngvadottir (talk) 16:58, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Will do for sure i'll see what i can dig up, no i did not add that section good addition though now that you revised it, let me get to work--Stone2ypr (talk) 17:07, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Violation of TOU

Again, with respect, but out of curiosity, why are you helping a paid editor who is clearly violating the TOU in terms of not disclosing paid edits [5]? Shouldn't that be the first "help" he is given, help following the TOU? Thank you. Logical Cowboy (talk) 17:39, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Hmm. I suspect he may consider it more criticism than help, and be partly right. My motivation was to set him right on MOS and more importantly on copyvio - it damages the encyclopedia when someone copies text into articles, and over time it can cause a lot of work for others when someone misunderstands the conventions on capitalization and overlinking. But let me also put it to you: do you have any reason to suspect he's being paid to edit that particular article, which was started by someone else? If not, then it would be completely inappropriate to not interpret his edits there as intended to help the article writer and Wikipedia. In fact just the kind of thing he said in that response that he largely does here. Please don't let's create a distinction between COI editors and others so rigid that we consider all edits by those in the former class through the lens of that suspicion. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:49, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
He said "yes I am a paid editor"--that is a direct quote. You are correct that he is not disclosing which articles he is paid for and which he is not. That is the violation of the TOU. Please consider this a report to an administrator of a paid editor who is violating the TOU, by not disclosing which articles he is paid to edit and which he is not. Here are the exact words for the part of the TOU he is violating. "As part of these obligations, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. You must make that disclosure in at least one of the following ways: a statement on your user page, a statement on the talk page accompanying any paid contributions, or a statement in the edit summary accompanying any paid contributions." Thank you. Logical Cowboy (talk) 17:55, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
We do not know he is in violation, and I remind you not to assume he is, but I trust my reminder to him in the section you started is adequate? Yngvadottir (talk) 18:11, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. Actually, we do know that he is literally in violation of the TOU. He has not disclosed his "employer, client, and affiliation" for any edit. He has not made any disclosure on his user page, talk page, or edit summaries as required by the TOU. Yet he describes himself as a "paid editor," which to me suggests multiple paid edits. He also refers here [6] to taking on multiple "jobs." Please note that is not about me or my assumptions of good or bad faith. This is about following the TOU. As the situation stands, I think he is still in violation of the TOU. We need to see a list of which of his edits are paid. That is what the TOU means in terms of disclosing "any contribution." So, I really don't think we are there yet. There is still an ongoing violation. Logical Cowboy (talk) 18:23, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
I know you mean well, but please give him a chance to conform to the new rules. It's never just about one editor in a collaborative project, and we're both (all) still bound by Pillar Four. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:43, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I am looking forward to him conforming to the rules, which I would like to point out again he is currently in violation of. How about we revisit this in a week? If he has not disclosed all of his paid edits as required by the TOU by then, can we follow up? Thank you. Logical Cowboy (talk) 18:50, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
The thing of it is, he may not edit for pay that frequently. I suggest you do leave him alone and if you want to check back in future, remember to assume good faith. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:54, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
I would be delighted to learn that he does not edit for pay that frequently. That is why I hope he will conform to the rules (that he is currently violating) and disclose his paid edits since June 14. Thanks again. Logical Cowboy (talk) 19:04, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Logical Cowboy, now i completely see where the mis-communication was. I must say again, this is my First and ONLY wiki contribution at the moment. I have never been paid to edit nor do i ever intend to honestly. I believe you are mistaken sir. My only goal is to add value to the wiki, not take away and it's been a wonderful learning experience, thanks again to all, these past days have been invaluable. --Stone2ypr (talk) 22:07, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

I don't understand the whole thing, frankly. You should probably have asked someone with one iota of technical competence! But I have asked at the IP's talk page, suggesting they post to Talk:Lund or one of the other article talk pages with a fuller explanation. And for now I've reverted the lot of them. I'm not sure why Lund was in the first group to be changed in any case - they are clearly pushing this particular archive-by-request service, and their other targets have a Romanian connection. Oh BTW late for bed, sorry, >thud< Yngvadottir (talk) 20:10, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for notifying the involved user right providers after you revoked reviewer and rollback of Carriearchdale‎, but whenever you revoke any right make sure that you have also removed it from the user page/talk page of the user. I thought of doing that, truth to tell, but other than claims of being an admin or a bureaucrat (and those userboxes have "verify" buttons), I can't see the harm in allowing people to decorate their user pages with qualifications they don't have. (Who checks Babel boxes for accuracy, for example?) So I figured it fell under our policy of avoiding editing others' user pages. However, now that she's blocked, she can't edit it, so the point is moot. IOW I don't have a big problem with your having done that, but that was why I didn't. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sister-wife of Njörðr, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ullin. Aaah, the guy who did the flight from Ys. If I have time ... it looks good right now, just if you know his work, it is then apparent how much is missing. Yngvadottir (talk) 14:43, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Not the best article, but the French is good. I was thinking of maybe you can check theirs. Hafspajen (talk) 15:12, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Yes exactly. Once one looks at the French it becomes apparent that ours needs more. Do you think we should have a separate article on Les énervés de Jumièges, as they do? Yngvadottir (talk) 15:23, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
What I think that it is a creepy painting. I don't like mothers who abuse their child. Hafspajen (talk) 15:25, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Yes, it is. Of course the story of Ys is creepy too - the king's daughter betraying the city and so on. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:03, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Some pictors - painters have a bit sick minds. And he is a little bit like that, I tried to select the best paintings making the gallery, that are HIS best - but I could have done a much-much creepier gallery too. This one for example, Egon Schiele - I really started to feel weird after working on this article. The guy is crazy - I realized that while poking around there. This guy, was on the contary, Tadao Ando, he made me feel serene, balaced and refereshed, calm and I felt like flying. Weird, no? It has to do with the inexplicable thing only an artwork can -tell - somehow. And in the begining I thought Tadao was a lot of boring cement, while Schiele. . . - I liked the colours and the lines. Hafspajen (talk) 17:06, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I wouldn't collect Schieles. But some art is made for huge galleries, and other art for small galleries, and other art would work in residences of varying sizes. I would like one day to have a residence large enough for Tintorettos and Gallen-Kallelas. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:17, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Yes, it is a refreshing feeling to have a lot of space like that... My dad had a big appartmant like that - old fashioned, with maids chamber, enormous kitchen and food- lucka -a small wooden cabinet inside of the apartment, built into the wall, would have doors on both sides- between the kitchen and the dining room, and all walls full of paintings - 7 meters high. But then there was always problems with the curtains ... OOPS - forgot to do something about Pekka Halonen. Hafspajen (talk) 17:28, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Good for your dad! The example you posted here is a bit too civilised for me:
Those would overwhelm most living spaces. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:37, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
And for his next wife. Is this kind of The Forging of the Sampo you want on your wall? Hafspajen (talk) 17:49, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
I do have a strong stomach. But I don't think I'd want The Raft of the Medusa in the dining room. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:08, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Hm, no. Hafspajen (talk) 18:14, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

would be my choice. Hafspajen (talk) 18:24, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Those would suit many living spaces :-) I don't believe I'd seen Night Rain before. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:43, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
Oh, it is NOT because I don't like any other artwork. But they are so final, mostly all of them... If you understand what I mean. These leave something for the fantasy - one can look at them all day long. Hafspajen (talk) 20:49, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
  • @Hafspajen: Have a look at Luminais now, I think I'm done. Sorry about shoving in Galish and Merovingian pictures like that, but the text discusses them. Similarly with the dome fresco. I didn't put in the other versions of the Sons of Clovis II - they have a full set in their article. And I left out the huge list of other paintings. I checked those references I was able to see. Oxford English

I have reverted your edit that changes to use -ize rather than -ise, because it has been discussed twice before and the consensus was to use British English. See Talk:University_of_Oxford/Archive_3#Oxford English and Talk:University_of_Oxford/Archive_2#Organization.2Forganisation. It also reverted your addition of "in order" which is just not needed. --Bduke (Discussion) 05:45, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Ah, I was unaware of that decision. The editor who had initially made the change has been carelessly running a script; this was the only one of his latest batch that I reverted, in view of the Oxfordness of Oxford spelling. Yngvadottir (talk) 06:11, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Thank You for agreeing to work with me

Hi,

Can I begin by thanking you for agreeing to work with me, I had grown frustrated with having my edits constantly reverted. Also, despite the fact that I have tried to implement the administrators wishes, I keep getting threatened with being blocked which is upsetting. Hopefully, I can work with you in order to make pertinent changes to the Wentbridge page.

To that end, could I please ask you, if it is not too much trouble, to judge the page dated 14:32 19 July 2014 on its own merits, as this was the last amendment that I made. Given that I am new to editing Wikipedia articles there will be changes that can be made to the benefit of the page, and hopefully we can discuss these and work together to implement any outstanding issues.

Thank you,

Scott

@Siggasonswein: It does seem too long (or undue weight, as we term it), but you have indeed used secondary sources. Did you see that there are responses at Talk:Wentbridge, including a specific opinion on what can be usefully put back? Yngvadottir (talk) 00:32, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
Next question - can you supply page numbers for the references to books? If so, I can see how to cut it down. Also, some are wondering why you haven't added anything about the Yorkshire Anglo-Saxon theory at Robin Hood? It would still need to be summarised briefly (one paragraph maximum; it might be better fitted in after existing coverage on one theory), and strict Conflict of interest policy would suggest proposing your addition at the article's talk page first, since there you would probably want to have a footnote to your own work. Have you considered what that addition should look like? Yngvadottir (talk) 00:41, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Thanks,

I have seen the commentary on the Wentbridge talk page, but it is overwhelming, and I fear that I am on a time delay which doesn't help. Also, yes, I have all of the correct citation details as I have copy-pasted them from the original thesis. And yes, I had considered adding information to the Robin Hood page itself, as this is an obvious action, but until today the page was semi-protected and thus I was prohibited from accessing it.

In particular, I note that BB23 feels that the information relating to Robin Hood does not belong on the Wentbridge page. I must strongly contest this point. The original Robin Hood sources, which date from the fifteenth century in the form of medieval ballads, relate Robin Hood's activities to the Went Valley, and in particular to Wentbridge, and not to the county of Nottinghamshire. This is a point of interest which is accepted by all professional historians (see Sir J.C. Holt 'Robin Hood'). The Yorkshire / Nottinghamshire Robin Hood heritage issue is a highly controversial topic in northern England and therefore is often spoken of. In consequence, Wakefield City Council has itself placed a plaque on the bridge over the River Went in the heart of Wentbridge to commemorate this detail. Therefore, the Robin Hood information that I have posted is of the utmost importance to the Wentbridge page, for it is the one thing, above all others, that the locale is known for. I would suggest therefore that in the interests of local history, the content that I have included on Robin Hood is fitting.

Staszek Lem has pointed to repetitions and where these occur they can be edited.

The first paragraph on 'Geography and Topography' and the final paragraph appear to be popular. In particular, Staszek Lem has indicated that most of the additions to 'Geography and Topgraphy' relate to the locality, which is what I had believed. And, strictly speaking, the second to last paragraph, which is properly cited, is important because it explains the local history of the region, and how this led to the origin of the Robin Hood legend. It is indeed difficult to write four lines on the topic of Robin Hood and believe that I have kept this to a bare minimum.

Please advise,

Scott

Not four lines in my view, but much shorter than it was. (I was thinking especially of NeilN's comment at 00:25, but I see that conversation is continuing there; they're trying to help you out by assessing what should be put back.) I appreciate the time delay thing - in view of the time where I presume you are, I thought you had gone to bed. There's no big rush and although it's not late where I am, it's very hot and I'm making stupid mistakes. Otherwise I would have offered to edit the article myself to incorporate a brief summary. That offer stands, but after I've had some sleep would be a better idea :-) If you're amenable - and you should note that I will condense and cut a lot - then please look up the page numbers and add them afterwards? On the other hand it's possible someone else will do it for us - in that case, again, please add those page numbers.
You have been registered for long enough and made enough edits that your account should now be 'autoconfirmed', which makes it possible for you to edit semi-protected articles. However, since at Robin Hood you would most logically add a reference to your own work as well as the third-party references, I still recommend you propose that edit at Talk:Robin Hood first. (The conflict of interest policy, to which I referred above.) In terms of reorganising the article and adding references to others' work, you can do that per WP:BOLD, but if you get reverted, you should then discuss on the talk page rather than reinstating your edit(s). This is bold - revert - discuss, our recommended procedure.
A small point that someone else has made: we sign here on talk pages using the software, because it provides a link to the person's user and/or talk pages, which is convenient for the person responding, especially when the user name differs from the real name, as yours and mine do. This is done either by typing 4 tildes, ~~~~, or by clicking the symbol that should appear above the edit screen - either a scribble or a pencil, depending on the settings you have enabled.
I'll be up for a few more hours. Yngvadottir (talk) 02:22, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi

Thanks again for the help.

If I've understood both Neil's and Staszek Lem's advice correctly, they're suggesting that I can reinsert the sections pertaining to 'Geography and Topography' and also the final paragraph.

Scott

@Siggasonswein: I've done a little tiny bit of tidying up at Robin Hood: I fixed the oak picture so that it shows (you had one too few closing square brackets) and I removed "Sir" and "eminent" because both are contrary to our house style: no honorifics, avoid praise words as non-neutral. Keep it utterly dry. I note that the article already refers in several places to J. C. Holt's theory, so there is definitely further condensing and combining to be done. And a small typographical point: use straight inverted commas and apostrophes if you can, rather than the slanted ones.
You're now getting into working with the other editors quite well, so if you prefer, go ahead and put back that little bit of material at Wentbridge. Again, I would not personally make the new Robin Hood material there as short as four lines - maybe one or two brief paragraphs. And I hope you have those page numbers now :-) Yngvadottir (talk) 15:51, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi, yeah, I had thought myself that the Robin Hood page needs some tidying up. I'm currently on sick-leave and so I think that tidying the page up turn into a bit of a pet project as I while away the hours. Thanks for the advice on Wentbridge, I will do as you suggest.

The Wentbridge page is still being condemned

Hi,

I have noticed that the Wentbridge page that I have edited is still being condemned. I have taken on board the recommended changes, and thereby reducing the amount of geographical and topographical information to stuff that only relates to Wentbridge. In addition, I have kept the Robin Hood stuff to a couple of paragraphs as you suggested. So can you please advise on where I have gone wrong.

Thanks,

Scott

I went back and noted that you'd been discussing and editing accordingly, all of which is good. I went in and condensed and copyedited a bit, and then left a note on the talk page. Yngvadottir (talk) 00:40, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Évariste Vital Luminais

Hello! Your submission of Évariste Vital Luminais at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! CeeGee 10:27, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Yngvadottir, the of Évariste Vital Luminais at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. A favor

I'm contacting you because I see you edited the documentation for {{shy}} the other day. For almost a year I've been in a bizarre dispute with another editor who insists that shy only operates when the word in question is longer than the entire available line width i.e. the word is wider than the browser window (so to speak -- as in the wockawocka example) -- apparently his configuration is such that the more usual breaking of words for aesthetic reasons doesn't happen for him, so he insisted that it doesn't happen for anyone, and that I don't understand how shy works. This wouldn't matter except that he keeps accusing me of inserting shy in articles in order to erect a "markup minefield", "locking down" the articles so that others will be unable to edit them, I guess because the shy template is so fearsome. For a while it will seem he's found some other preoccupation, but then he pops up every once in a while to make this accusation again (along with many others -- he's really a great example of the Dunning-Kruger effect).

As you've seen I've made some changes to the documentation to clear this up, but I fear that at some some random point in the future he'll accuse me of corrupting the documentation as part of my evil plan. (It's really been a rough ride with him these last few months.) So I was wondering if, to the extent you feel competent to do so, you might comment at Template talk:Shy (currently a redlink, BTW) confirming the changes I've made. I don't want to name this other editor or point you to our conversations, unless you really want that, because he'll accuse me of making a personal attack on him. EEng (talk) 22:01, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Quick reply, must get ready for work ... I don't really feel competent to do so, but I do feel your expansion of the explanation is helpful. Of course I went there to find out what it was :-) Since people now view the encyclopedia - and edit - on devices with a huge variety of window width, and some people haven't fully realized this, I believe that's part of the issue; part may also be the point in the documentation that browsers vary, some ignoring the markup entirely. I do notice two discussions at WT:MOS in mid-2013, both coming down on the side of minimizing use of the template, and a follow-up in December 2013 where someone was pointed to the resulting guidance on soft hyphens in the MOS. That suggests there are several editors with this concern, and I'm not sure why you didn't post there making the point about differing browsers. Will think further, sorry, out of time. Yngvadottir (talk) 04:35, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
Actually, that's good enough. Thanks. EEng (talk) 04:54, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Jeanne d'Aragon or Isabel de Requesens; Raphael or Giulio Romano?

In the Louvre
Here a last question: Why is this that there are so many different versions and colours on this picture. [14] and [15], [16] Surely some oxonian have seen this picture and knows how it looks like. Also some states that it is one person, and some -an other. Lower down on this site it [17] gives two names - that it is 2013 Jeanne d'Aragon - the other down the page if you click a lot on + button = Isabel de Requesens - but besides it is Jeanne d'Aragon, 2013 - now which is the correct one? And here an other Louvre site show something again completely different. And I have seen this picture in art books - rather looking like in my nomination. Jeanne d'Aragon by Raphael gets 491 000 google hits, while Isabel de Requesens Rafael gets 26 800 google hits. What's up? Hafspajen (talk) 02:44, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
They've changed the analysis of who it depicts; see your second link, which is the Lessing and Pomarède book: "Portrait of Dona Isabel de Requesens, Lady Viceroy of Naples, formerly known as Portrait of Jeanne d’Aragon". Also some experts plainly think it is by Giulio Romano with Raphael maybe having helped (your 4th link). The thing to do would be to look at the latest scholarly work on the painting and find out what the current state of thinking is - maybe there is disagreement, maybe scholarly consensus has changed. (Do we have an article on the painting in any Wikipedia, and does it summarise the situation?) As to the colours, I don't have the eyes to speak on that; sometimes the newer photographic technologies produce quite different colours, sometimes it's because the painting has been cleaned/restored. Yngvadottir (talk) 04:18, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

A portrait made by Giulio Romano - - look at the garment depicted - it is not folding - it is keeping the woman in a weird hug like an giant scary octopus versus the other painting

And look at this, the smile, the elegance of the garment - the velvet glittering - the hair, oh - this IS a masterwork - would't be surprized if it was a secret Leonardo - but whoever did it - anyway - it simply doesnt' even compare with Giulio's works - it is so much much better -

This is Giulio Romano's portrait of Jeanne that appears to have caused all the trouble. He clearly learnt from working with Raphael. One thing I note is the blander colour balance. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:51, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
We don't - just webbsites - (and Louvre is contradicting itself) - and this crazy nomination. Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/File:Portrait de Jeanne d'Aragon, by Raffaello Sanzio, from C2RMF retouched.jpg. Thanks for trying anyway. Take care and have fun. Hafspajen (talk) 04:59, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
@Hafspajen: At least 2 Wikipedia articles: it:Ritratto di Dona Isabel de Requesens ("by Raphael and assistants" (Giulio Romano named in infobox); demonstrated in 1997 to not be Jeanne d'Aragon, as formerly believed); fr:Portrait d'Isabelle de Requesens, vice-reine de Naples (Raphael (and Giulio Romano, in infobox) "originally confused with a painting of Jeanne d'Aragon because of a mistake by Pierre de Bourdeille, called Brantôme). I don't see any sources cited and am at work, but there's a start. There may even be other articles that use other images of the picture - I got to these by seeing what linked to the one you nominated, via Commons. Yngvadottir (talk) 12:55, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
I presume you've seen the Commons category? Yngvadottir (talk) 13:01, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

So many contradictory info! But just look at this painting above made by Giulio Romano, the octopus woman. It is just insane. It shows all signs of a not so good painter - eyes are different, garment like a armour - whoever came up with that idea - had a bad idea - and I don't know who - because can't find anything on it. Just stick to my orignal - per User:Amandajm's talk page. Thanks for trying to help. Felt I need to discuss this with a calm and educated person - because those discussions on nom are - well... Holy smoke. That is a real bad picture. He pinched or copied that one from his master - Raffy. ->Hafspajen (talk) 15:52, 27 July 2014 (UTC)

It isn't creepy like the poor octopus woman tho. Meanwhile - the Commons page on the unretouched version of the image contains a spectacularly good, referenced article on the picture! (Saying the face and hands are Raphael but not the rest; I find that a bit dubious looking at the 3 images, but who am I to say. And I know Raphael worked with a whole atelier.) I cannot get access to Fritz's 1997 book that changed everything (apparently German and there is a French translation), but I can get the book edited by Brown that reports on it all. So ... I do not have an education in art history; I don't even have your eyesight. But if I start an article on this painting, will you help make it less stupid? Yngvadottir (talk) 16:14, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
Now I am confused. Looking at that other Giulio Romano on Commons again, I see I misremembered and they say it is also Isabel - as Mona Lisa! And the gallery believes it to be a copy of the Raphael/Giulio Romano one. My head hurts. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:08, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
Oh, you are not the only one. I don't know when I will be able - but answer - yes. This file is most File:Giulio Romano (school of Raphael) - Portrait of Doña Isabel de Requesens - Louvre 612 Joconde 000PE026978.jpg surely wrong - uploaded by my antagonist at my nomination wanting to trump over me. It is just not possible that Giulio suddenly turned into a genius and later went back into mediocrity. I would ask an art professor at your university who the heck ... changed the pictures original name and why. I won't be able to comment more from now on. Thanks for trying to sort out the mess. Hafspajen (talk) 19:14, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
@Hafspajen: OK, I plan to take the bus to the local college library tomorrow (today, European time) and get David Alan Brown's Virtue and Beauty. If they've lost it or won't let me check it out because it's a folio, I'll have to interlibrary loan it. But that may be all I can get, and art history is not one of my fields, so I expect to rely on you heavily. You have been warned. Yngvadottir (talk) 06:20, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

DYK of Fittja gård

I'm notifying you that I consider your additions to Fittja gård sufficient for shared credit if the article is accepted as a DYK. Right now, it's not quite ready. Check out the nomination if you're interesting in helping out.

Peter Isotalo 11:50, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

That's sweet of you; recently I've been helping out BabbaQ with some translated articles, and to my surprise they then get nominated for DYK and the person who promotes them to the prep area has quietly added my name and those of others who've worked on them and the first I know of it is I get a DYK template! I appreciate the gesture, and your saying I deserve credit and being sure I know. However, it's really been BabbaQ's decision to nominate them, and I don't feel I can participate at DYK any longer (because of the incorporation of GAs). So really it's up to BabbaQ (and perhaps other helpers) to fix the articles, while I'm grateful enough for any sudden DYK templates. I saw the ping and looked at what you said in your review, and I think some of the points are aiming a bit high for DYK, but there was indeed a paragraph I was unable to reference when I fixed up the article. Perhaps someone else can get access to newspaper archives and reference it. - and then maybe you should make a note not to credit me for this one. Yngvadottir (talk) 12:00, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
No problem. Just making a courtesy notification. If enough of your content stays, though, I feel credit is still in order.

Hi, any chance you could translate this one from German? The Ksar images and info looks very interesting!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:55, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

I'll put it on my list. We have what looks like a good, but under-referenced article on the ksars; a lot of the German Dahar article is about cave-dwellings. I'm surprised the French isn't better. Yngvadottir (talk) 12:50, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi, great job. Yeah I thin there was probably too much written on the ksars, it is a mountain after all. The ksar article could use a lot of work, but then so could most articles!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:29, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

Quincy Timberlake

I continued looking through the sources (those that actually mention the subject!) and I've been slowly realizing that Timberlake is not really notable. Most of the material related to the political party to which he belongs and its activities mention Esther Arunga and Joseph Hellon, but treat Timberlake superficially and only in passing. This might be a deeper rabbit hole than previously thought... §FreeRangeFrogcroak 16:33, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I've been wondering whether it should be AfD'd. However, there are a not inconsiderable number of tabloid-style and blog mentions, some of which refer to him as "mysterious". The article currently has lots of references relating to his wife, Esther Arunga, which give a flavour of this - and one passing mention of the death of one of their three children, which is of course all over such sources. (I note with interest that that mention is an attack on the newspaper cited; the reference is a broken link but is one of those I found. I rev-deleted 2 edits by an IP a month or two ago and wondered what reliable sources said.) I think it would be kept on grounds of GNG. Also there is a powerful argument on grounds of avoiding entrenched bias. But IMO in view of what you say plus BLP concerns related to his wife - and parents - the article should be cut right down. Do you want to do that, or should I? I know nothing whatsoever about Kenyan politics, or Australian politics for that matter, plus might well not get to it for a few days, but you've done a lot of work on it already so if you would prefer me to do it, say the word. Or do you think we should AfD anyway for transparency's sake? Yngvadottir (talk) 17:51, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
It seems that the sequence is as follows: Arunga (the wife) is halfway notable as a TV and radio anchor. She joins Hellon in a weird sort of political-religious movement (the "Finder of God"). Arunga then meets Timberlake, they get married. They're arrested for allegedly belonging to a cult (along with a bunch of other people), both do some time in prison. They have a falling out with Hellon and the wife's family. They make bail, leave Kenya by way of the UAE, and up in Australia where Timberlake creates his political party (which realistically exists only on the internet) and is now apparently doing low-level campaign work for an Australian MP. And yeah, one of their kids died. But if we look carefully at the sources, the reliable ones, the "story" seems to be consistently about Arunga and Hellon, not Timberlake. For example, look at this and this. Impressive coverage at first glance, but both articles are written by the same person, a "stringer" in Scotland. Everything else is self-generated or very tabloid-ish and again, goes back to the wife's notability and their association with Hellon. The man has never held political office, so he fails WP:POL. And GNG by osmosis though his wife? Not sure that works. I'm already knee-deep into this, so let me finish up stubbing that mess to the bare minimum we can actually use in terms of verifiability and then we'll see if it merits an AFD. And no, I know nothing about Kenyan politics but good heavens, I'm learning fast   §FreeRangeFrogcroak 18:20, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes, you are! The second of those links is in fact all Timberlake, merely passed along by Darlington. I'd almost rather we had an article on his wife, but - BLP. I do think he passes GNG by the sheer weight of tabloid coverage, but let's see what it looks like after you've cut it down to size. Thanks for being willing to do that. Yngvadottir (talk) 18:34, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
No problem. A correction (because I'm learning more): The PlaCenta party was created by all three (Timberlake, Hellon and Aruga) before their falling out, and not later. And it is as far as I can tell actually a registered political party in Kenya. And Hellon did at one point either run for president, or intended to, under that party. Not that it matters greatly, but I just wanted to correct what I wrote. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 19:22, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes I'm editing Hellon's article right now. Info that was in the Persondata says he's deferred till 2017; I will search for sources after I track down those already cited. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:25, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
This source provides other names for Timberlake, including leads on his music career]. Yngvadottir (talk) 20:36, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Alright, give it the once-over if you have a minute. Needs some more work still, but the worst of it is gone. I added that ref only to support the musical career thing, not sure I want to get into allegations that he's a Congolese musician. That would exceed my cringe tolerance for the day   §FreeRangeFrogcroak 23:53, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
A lot of the references about both of them are pretty negative; possibly the more respectable news outlets have a lesser web presence :-) I note that he's described as "failed" in that field. But the aliases help explain why there's so little about that. Hellon has an alternative non-English name too. I'll have a look when I can, thanks for all the work. Reassessment

My article is not being reassessed. Please do something.--prathamprakash29 03:19, 13 August 2014 (UTC)Pratham

Pratham, it can't meet the standard; there just are not enough independent sources to write a detailed article. The school is still too new. So people are probably not reassessing it out of kindness, because they don't want to fail it again. You should find something else to develop if you want a Good Article. If there are any other newspaper reports, or government reports, find them and add references to them. But as I say, I doubt enough sources exist to expand the article enough. Unreferenced material, or material referenced to the school's own websites or to blogs, will not help. I believe the school is still too new for there to be enough sources. I see it's tagged stating that the e-mail was not explicit enough. en.wikisource is a separately run Wikimedia project; all I can suggest is look at the links provided in the template and use one of them. Probably a new e-mail following the guidelines more specifically will be required. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:42, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Munster man

Hi, can you add a bit to Henricus Münstermann and Ludwig Münstermann?♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:09, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

I'll try and have a look. If I'm not blocked for editwarring or incivility first. But right now I have to go and walk a couple of hairy creatures. Yngvadottir (talk) 16:23, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
OK, I did my best with Ludwig. (There's some pretty high-flown stylistic characterisation.) Henricus was a clergyman, so I'll leave him for someone else. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:38, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Domiziano Arcangeli

If you have some time, could you please take a look at this article? You edited it quite some time ago. The subject is strange as are some of the edits to the article. At the moment, it is being heavily edited by someone who is probably affiliated with the subject. My problem is I have limited patience and often take a blunt approach, whereas you tend to be more deft with content issues and troublesome editors. The editor may actually have something useful to add, but it's hard for me to see past the garbage. If you don't have the time or inclination, I understand.--Bbb23 (talk) 04:53, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

I remember that one now - the places I went looking for sources ... stylistically, the current version looks very like the one where we came in. But some of the content is different. Clearly this new editor, like the earlier one, has a very different view of what an encyclopedia entry should look like. I'm tempted to say cut it all back and then sift through it for any more films that have references and can therefore be added to the filmography. Although the Fellini story, if it has a decent ref., might be worth keeping, as I recall the refs. were far from decent. I'll look at it again after a night's sleep and may indeed keep very little of the new material, even though I am a soft touch. But you may want to compare the two editors .... especially since I now see I have been reading Ross-Novak and Novak-Ross as the same person, so that makes three editors making the article look strikingly similar. Yngvadottir (talk) 05:05, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
@Bbb23: I see you did roll it back, and so did someone else. I went through the new material and found a solid source that let me add 2 films to the filmography (both already with articles!), but the claimed work for 2014 had inadequate sourcing. Notably at Fangoria the only claim for Arcangeli's headlining the movie comes in a comment by someone calling himself an industry exec and friend whose nick resembles that of the latest editor at the page ... doubly ironic since we already had his work on that movie sourced, it was just delayed in release to 2013 (I have now changed that) and the 2014 is the DVD release. I've now watchlisted it. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:50, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your work. I'm not sure why C.Fred said I had copyvio concerns. That may have been earlier based on an image that was used. I will try to look at the socking issue later. As I understand the latest editor, he claims that he and the subject share a company together, Empire Films. He screws up the URL of the website, but it is here. Whether Benore is a sock of the others, it's often hard to tell whether someone is a sock puppet or a meat puppet without a CU. DavidFlowers and Ross-Novak are both stale. The later acccounts are not.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:52, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Castilla y León

Hi Yngvadottir, I'm Marcalsig. I'm from Spain from Castilla y León and the translation of each word would be Castilla= Castile (which means place with Castles) and for León, that means Lion in english. Even with your explanation before I don't understand why you just translate Castilla and not León. I understand that is a name so it shouldn't be translate, for example, most of the cities in US hadn't been translated from the Spanish to English, as some of the cities in California: San Jose (you don'y say Saint Joseph) or Tiburon (you don't say Shark) or Los Angeles (you don't say The Angels). This is an english question, I don't care about how other articles are written, I want to understand why in english you translate just some words and not others. Thank you for the explanation before. ≈Marcalsig≈ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marcalsig (talkcontribs) 19:49, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

  1.   Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
  2.   Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
  3.   Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
  4.   Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
  5.   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
  6.   12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
  7.   Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
  8.   Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists.   Matty.007 (submissions),   ThaddeusB (submissions),   WikiRedactor (submissions),   Figureskatingfan (submissions),   Yellow Evan (submissions),   Prism (submissions) and   Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi

If you got some time for it please take a look at the article Twitterature. I do not know what to do with it really. It is a bit difficult to translate the Swedish version of the article into English I think. Though the Swedish version has appeared on the main page of SV Wiki. Thanks.--BabbaQ (talk) 10:38, 31 August 2014 (UTC)

I am very sorry for reverting your edits. BabbaQ did ask me too for help and I am trying my best. We simply don't want a word-for-word translation of a Swedish article. The English article is in real danger of being deleted and we don't want to give fellow editors more excuses by duplicating a Swedish article which may result in further f\grounds for deletion. werldwayd (talk) 13:13, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
@Werldwayd: You should look at my version more closely. It is not word for word; I am tightening up the Swedish text and adapting it as I go, and the majority of the examples and references the Swedish editors have provided are in English. I'll stop now because I'm out of break, but BabbaQ should not ask multiple people simultaneously. Also I don't think the article is in any danger of deletion - now that it has a plethora of references including 2 UK newspapers. And Neil Gaiman. Thanks for the Guardian ref., and you'll see I fitted in your portmanteau explanation at the start, too. But we clearly disagree about the ideal amount of explanation. As I say, out of time; the remainder of the types are sitting there in Swedish in hidden text, and I'll go by the talk page and check whether the editor who PRODded it was informed as they requested.
Sure, go ahead. You are doing a fantastic work. Happy editing. werldwayd (talk) 13:27, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
@Werldwayd: Thanks! (blush) I think I'm about done with it; I have not searched for additional sources, but I have added examples from and more citations to those that were there in the Swedish article, including working in much of their long list of external links. You and BabbaQ have a look and see if anything seems unclear or otherwise needs amending. (I think I found and fixed the places where working fast on my laptop had caused me to mess up). I'm going to create some redirects from other terms, if they don't already exist. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:14, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, everything looks great! --BabbaQ (talk) 22:02, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Not to brag but the Murder of Joanna Yeates article that I created will appear on the TFA section on the main page on 18 September :)--BabbaQ (talk) 22:02, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Good for you! Glad you like the Twitterature; I thought the Swedish article was well done. Yngvadottir (talk) 03:50, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
If you find time for it please take a look at the articles Martina Montelius, Athena Farrokhzad, Victor Hartman, Helena Quiding and Lilla Skuggan. Appreciate it! :)--BabbaQ (talk) 16:54, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
No promises, but I'll try. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:06, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

I actually did look at the article when I was adding the references back in. It was clear to me there were additional details that the individual would likely be the only one to know about. Still, it is required that references are posted in the article, not just an account of the individual. Bigddan11 (talk) 17:27, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanx Yngvadottir I will try to post added comments so other editors have more information to act upon. I also need help on the wiki for World Mentoring Academy. Since I'm not suppose to work on the page. I gave up on it 18 months ago. WMA has 8,300 students, 760 courses Free, no adverstising, no VC, Gov, or religious money, only my pocket money & I don't have deep pockets.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/World_Mentoring_Academy clowningar — Preceding undated comment added 19:51, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

@Clowningar: The problem is, its being a good thing does not make it either notable by our definition or useful in an encyclopedia. You should probably read this. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:56, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
This is a MOOC no $'s and your use of "Promotion" refers to raising customer awareness of a product or brand, generating sales, and creating brand loyalty. This is not commercial! and has no future in raising money for it's founders. When and if it does than perhaps delete the links? Regarding notable that is almost a laughable point,, when you have the Cup size of Porn Stars and Klingon? I will dig a bit further and do some research on how to be a better advocate of this project. And when or if I decide to become active in Wikipedia writing with in my knowledge, I promise I will do more research than has been given me. Clowningar (talk) 20:07, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
Please do dig deeper; as I say, getting the article created is probably the best use of your time with respect to it. But again, I recommend this essay. We can't cover every charity either, or link to petitions or fundraising sites. By the way, your statement above makes it very clear that you have a conflict of interest, and since all your edits so far have been adding links to World Mentoring Academy, drafting the article about World Mentoring Academy, and discussing the links and the article on others' talk pages, up to now you appear to be a totally promotional editor. I suggest you make some edits on unrelated topics, both to demonstrate that you are not only here to promote the academy, and to give you some more experience in how we work here: for example, finding reliable sources and phrasing things neutrally based on them. Yngvadottir (talk) 20:18, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

@Yngvadottir :Thanx for the time you have spent, relating to editing. My first impression from creating the World Mentoring Academy in the sandbox mode,, was frustrating. In my research, I read all the articles about MOOC's, before submitting for approval. I mirrored all the other MOOC listing that are active. And used the same Language as the MOOC's,, but one editor says it is promotional,, and just like middle school all the other lemmings followed the first over the cliff. With no RESEARCH! My experience has diminished my optimism in this format.

It is a bit disingenuous that you are objective in your entry's,, in order to write an article you must have a investment of the heart. You, like me, don't edit in Wiki for $'s or fame.
Regarding the word Promotional,, you can stretch the word to fit your agenda,, a person who introduce's himself could be a promotional activity.
I have a very limited time, and with my prior experience in the Wiki Middle School behavior, I'm not inclined to write other articles to build up my Street cred on Wikipedia. If I had 2 life spans,, than perhaps I could be helpful in other areas than Free Education for the World, but unfortunately, I spend every moment providing this service. If you are inclined to shout from the sidelines It'll never fly Orville! than be my guest. I would like your support.Clowningar (talk) 21:09, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
You are far more likely to know where to look for the needed one or two further reliable sources about the academy than I am. I note that the last two reviews, by DGG, were quite encouraging. As to writing neutrally, as I imply, it's not necessarily something people already know how to do - but it's an essential part of what we do. I just checked, and nobody ever gave you a "welcome" template with links to our policies, discussion spaces, etc. So I'm going to drop a large version on your talk page; something in there may be useful, and I'm sorry the first person to edit there didn't do that. It used to be a friendly and useful tradition here - there are many things here that take some explanation and/or getting used to, such as our definition of "notable". Yngvadottir (talk) 21:19, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

clowningar, as I said in those reviews, and as Yngvadottir says, what is essential is secondary sources to show notability; we go by the sources, not the intrinsic merits. The promotional tone can be reduced by writing in paragraphs, not bullet points, and by saying what others think of it, based on the secondary sources. As a general rule, we mean "promotion" to indicate any article advocating the merits an organization, rather than discussing what it has done. When you have a draft that improves both the sources and the writing, let me know on my user talk page. DGG ( talk ) 05:25, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Archives

As I am developing the Archives wiki, if there are blanks on WP when I create articles there it seems only reasonable/fair to copy them over here to create placeholder/starter articles (as I borrow from WP) - and I prefer to make it clear that I am responsible for both WP and (other wiki) entries and thus there is no copy-vio.

What is the best way to proceed - putting a note on the WP List of National Archives talk page? (Creating or developing many of the red links/short pages would require a range of language skills - and it is often easier to 'create the article' #or# 'develop the article' than to do both.) Jackiespeel (talk) 17:48, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

@Jackiespeel: There are two issues. The most urgent is that you need to make the stubs look better, providing a reference and not wording anything in the article as a request for the reader or other editors to go look somewhere else. You don't need any more language skills to cite one of the references given in a foreign-language Wikipedia article than you already exhibit when you include the official website - just note the url, title, and location in the footnote. Opinions vary on the usefulness of stub article creation, but everyone agrees that unfinished-looking articles are not useful. Remember, there is no deadline. And ... they attract deletion nominations, whether speedy or not, which is a hassle for everyone. The less important one is that open wikis are not reliable sources. Do not cite them. If you want to reuse your own wording from Wikia or elsewhere, that's fine (although to cross the legal t's and dot the legal i's you should include in the edit summary something like "based on my own wording at http://wikia url"), but you should format the article for Wikipedia - external links section, footnotes, and so on - so if the articles on the other wikis are that short, you may as well do it from scratch. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:59, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Would it be practical to have (or is there) a 'national and regional archives and libraries' development group (whether or not making use of Wikia Archives wiki) to develop that particular area (including translating from elsewhere on WP - the German regional archives on DE:WP - not necessarily as so many pages). Might well go some way to solving the problem of one liners and a preference for creating starter articles :) Jackiespeel (talk) 22:02, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
In theory yes, but the majority of the WikiProjects have become much less active in recent years, so I would not advise starting a new one. Regarding the German regional archives, you could ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Germany; that project is still relatively active, but note that on the project page itself, Wikipedia:WikiProject Germany, several of the "project divisions" are red linked. Yngvadottir (talk) 22:07, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Shall we say that the 'debate' is partly about a matter of style - whether one researches the articles before putting them on WP, or prefers to create basic articles for development by 'the WP community' (or when one has the time to do so) - both of which can be valid in different contexts. :) Jackiespeel (talk) 09:55, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

(reset) Would my comment on the List of National Archives 'resolve' the discussion?

(And will contribute [31] to the cat discussion.) Jackiespeel (talk) 17:26, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

(Talk:List of national archives, for the talk page stalkers.) Yes, I think that's very helpful. And all three deletion discussions were closed as (speedy) keep, and the nominator says they understand now. But when you do create a new article, please make it minimally acceptable so it doesn't attract the new page patrollers (or perplex readers!) Yngvadottir (talk) 17:31, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

Tea again - a mystical thing this tea

In homes where servants were engaged in 'serving' meals, High Tea was the light meal taken standing up, at the "High Serving Table" in the kitchen, hence the name, by servants who would then be busy until the dining room was finished and they were then able to eat.Hafspajen (talk) 14:10, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

Jonathan Hill

- Sorry to bother you, but you being an Oxonian ... what have we done with JONATHAN HILL - who has a first class degree in Philosophy and Theology (top of year) from Oxford University and an MPhil in Theology also from Oxford. He has worked in a freelance editorial and writing capacity since leaving Oxford in 1997, and is currently working on Sky News. Jonathan has been highly acclaimed for his keen grasp of theology and philosophy, his engaging writing style and his ability to make often complex subjects accessible to all. Jonathan’s books include The Big Questions, The New Lion Handbook: The History of Christianity and The Crucible of Christianity. [32][33] [34]

Not my kind of thing at all at all I'm afraid. Remember, I try to avoid working on churches or their architects - let alone Christian apologists. And I'm afraid neither the top of year result nor the MPhil, both worthy of considerable respect though they are, qualify him for an article. What would is if you can find two articles in the press that are about him and his thought, rather than just a review of one of this books; or if you can find simply a ton of reviews of his books, some in good places (like the Times Literary Supplement or leading theology journals) in which case he would qualify as a writer. You may be able to if he's as good as you say; but I'm afraid I can't help. Drmies may be able to. Yngvadottir (talk) 12:08, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

OK; OK - OK - I can make this article - but I can't find out - ( And I tried)- when he was born and where. That is why I said that you as an antireligiuos Oxonian still might be able to find out ... because I can't. Hafspajen (talk) 15:21, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

1976. You don't absolutely have to have a birthdate and birthplace in an article, you know. But librarians tend to index by year of birth. Make it Jonathan Hill (theologian) unless you think the chap at Exeter is also notable. And I assume you have this review. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:35, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

The chap in Exeter is him, I recognize him. Thanks, that excellent. Why did you think they were different? Hafspajen (talk) 17:01, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

Singapore. Ah, I see now, the survey of theologians is the same book. Sorry, this is stuff I try to stay away from. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:53, 12 September 2014 (UTC)

That's a beginning. Now look for reviews of his books in good newspapers and in academic journals. Remember you don't need to say where he was born; for academics we often don't know that stuff till they die and get an obituary. Just write what you do know, with lots of good references. Yngvadottir (talk) 16:21, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
I expect he will tell me that soon. Mailed him. Hafspajen (talk) 16:23, 13 September 2014 (UTC)

Hope you don't mind but I put you in the DYK... Hafspajen (talk) 16:47, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
For the letter paintings? It pinged me, that must be one of the upgrades they have made ... I was thinking of asking you to take me out and credit Taksen instead. They added several good sources and are an expert on the artist. Yngvadottir (talk) 16:50, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
Now, now - I can add him but can't remove you. Hafspajen (talk) 16:52, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
Heh, thanks :-) Now be sure to use that review I linked to above. It has more clout than Amazon. Yngvadottir (talk) 16:46, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
Hey were are you. Have lost you in all this love-orgy. That link was weird - when I tried to save ir told me it was not permitted . Blacklisted? Hafspajen (talk) 16:55, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
Just copy the URL from my edits above; it's letting me save them, so that theological journal can't be blacklisted. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:04, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
Hm, now it worked. And according to his publishers there was a review in the Times Literary Supplement but I can’t be accessed.
That was very brave of you Yngadottir! Thought I have to chuck him. Wonder what Crisco 1492 succeded with the picture of him. Poor man, might have scared him, he is not responding to my e-mails any more. Drmies, think you could try your witts with him a little? Hafspajen (talk) 18:58, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

!

I think somebody butchered a little bit this article. This is how it looked like [36] - and I think it was quite all right. Saint Lucy's Day is a major Scandinavian celebration, much comparable with Cristmas - really - not a little daily Saint celebration as it is in Italy. And where is Lussi? Where is Finland, Dan mark and the rest of it? It is all gone - and NOTHING was incorrect. This is the kind of removals that make me angry. Also it has nothing to do with the saint . I don't like the changes. Hafspajen (talk) 22:04, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

I've reverted it back to the version prior to Dbachmann's cuts (pinging him here because I forgot to sign at the article talk page - have just got up - and that means it won't have pinged him from there). So now it needs to be discussed on the talk page. I know a little about this topic, but I have a conflict of interest that lies uncomfortably close; you should probably notify the relevant Wikiprojects, but keep it a neutral notification. And as I have said at the talk page, more sources are needed; you may be able to add some good ones. Yngvadottir (talk) 01:33, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
I notified Peter Isotalo, one of our most reliable Swedish editors - but I can assure you there is noting religious about it, (about the Lucia) and the Nordiska lexikon is like the Brittish Encyclopaedia, wouldn't call that unserious source (or remove it). Actually Lucia is hardly ever celebrated in churches - well not as a saint, so change lead. Hafspajen (talk) 09:30, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
Good. As I say, I agree about the notability (and the encyclopedia source) and I know there are more sources you could use, but I shouldn't edit this one. I just got up - WikiProject Sweden, and I hope folks have posted on the talk page. Yngvadottir (talk) 14:51, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Rudolf Koller

Yngvadottir, if it was you who cleaned up my confusion about Rudolf Koller and the Swiss Northeastern Railways, thank you. Guess I should have found a source other than Bing for translating Verabschiedung. Sca (talk) 14:46, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Thankyou so much for your time and input. I would like to nominate a page for deletion, if you'd stick with me a little further-as I believe it requires special attention over and above the deletion methods. The page in question is labelled 'Suicide methods' and provides explicit instruction and references. I welcome the original article about 'Suicide', but an informative article of ways to kill yourself has no place on a positive, forward-moving website viewed by all age groups. I realise this may sound a little arrogant of me, but in light of the fact that the it is accessible through a simple google search of 'suicide' in conjunction with the fact that the article has recieved over 80,000 hits in the last 30 days causes me a great deal of concern. I believe this is a matter for the police, as the issue has been raised several times by other users. I personally have experienced suicidal feelings and feel passionate about this issue.

Thanks for your time,

Al

Thankyou, this is really helpful. I'm a new user so I am a little unsure of what I'm doing, despite my campaign to delete said content. You do make a good case for poential academic use of the article, although there is no shortage of such information amongst professionals-Wikipedia mainly being used as a go to, quick source of information. Regardless of my personal opinion,

thanks for your time,

Cow-Man

Well, I think that it would be a bit too much withdrawing the DYK, I tried to find refs. Looks like he actually one of the most famous Swiss painters, the poor thing, after all.[37] Hafspajen (talk) 19:29, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Looks I made a mess of this. Sca translated other articles and all of them were referenced and all right. My fault, wasn't checking it enough. Hafspajen (talk) 10:26, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Could you delete this one, please

No idea how this came up. It is certainly all wrong. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:UsernameNotice#RFC.2FN_discussion_of_the_username_.22.7B.7B.7B1.7Cuser_name_required.7D.7D.7D.22

I've reverted your edits to it. I'm a bit puzzled, but you appear to be the second editor in quick succession to accidentally edit that template; probably what you should do is substitute it? Yngvadottir (talk) 12:26, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Seriously?

The disruptive editing on Dalmatian was being done by other users. I simply submitted a photo. Again and again users changed it back with zero - and I mean zero - logical reason. After rejecting my photo for no reason they then put another entirely different photo than was there to begin with! Seriously? This is why is so many people find trying to contribute to Wikipedia so frustrating. Pages become a "club" instead of home to any logical discussion. Not consensus just silly people who become proprietary about certain pages. apollo284 (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.191.198.238 (talk) 15:32, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Don't call me silly me or other editors. You were offered a discussion but you stayed out of it. I personally offered a solution with your picture in the gallery - but after this kind of comments I am not that sure about it. You don't respect any of the rules and conventions of editing. Hafspajen (talk) 15:35, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
You gave me no time to respond, obviously. And yes, your changes were purely emotional and then - after the fact - you came up with reasons. Make any argument you wish but the page is not improved since our discussion. Your point was to assert control. Which, again, is why Wikipedia struggles to involve to get the greater public in participating. Pages become little fiefdoms... I am obviously new to Wikipedia so apologies if I don't know the rules but I know when people are being pedantic. As I just posted on the talk page, you stated "...in my opinion, the images of Apollo do not demonstrate any specific point about the breed so are not relevant..." You could make that point about any photograph on the page. The "consensus" was just the same decision by the people who had proprietary feelings over the page in the first place. You didn't improve the page you just had a meeting to discourage casual users from ever participating. apollo284 (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.191.198.238 (talk) 16:12, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
@Apollo284: I've left a message on your user talk page, but also responding here because since you are logged out, you may not see the notification. The place to discuss this is the article talk page. We have certain rules and guidelines here, which I've asked the others to explain to you on request, since you are evidently a new editor. But one of the fundamental ones is that we discuss and reach consensus. Go talk about it there; they've been waiting for you. Yngvadottir (talk) 15:42, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Yngvadottir, Drmies, please, we can't discuss like this. I don't need several editors who think this and that (silly and pedantic) instead of being civilized. I am out of here, you deal with her/him. I don't discuss this any more. Hafspajen (talk) 16:20, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Don't worry, I know you aren't silly or pedantic. They posted to the article talk page and I've responded there. Yngvadottir (talk) 16:58, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
I don't feel like responding to someone who is calling me silly and pedantic. I WAS THE one who wanted a solution, a compromise - and made a gallery where this picture is included - now he instead of saying: - thanks that you came up with a compromise, please let us use that gallery, that was very nice of you really that you tried, thank you or something like that - well - she/he goes calling me names. Crisco 1492 is called all kinds of things to, now is this the New Wikipedia? why aren't these people get told to keep their mouth and get blocked if they open it again? Hafspajen (talk) 17:23, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I know you were. I hope it doesn't look as if I claimed that was my offer! Hopefully they are now looking at what you all said and at the pages I linked them to. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:27, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
Well, edit warring, socking and uncivility - only you are the one who still have the patience to go on, an other admin have blocked them by now. Hafspajen (talk) 17:31, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

No, no problem I LIKE dogs! I was happy to see an edit notice dog again.... Hafspajen (talk) 13:15, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

I am confused now, everything is weird. Isn't Eastern Europe like Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Romania, and such? While Germany, Nederlands, Belgium, France, Sweden and ... and such is Western Europe - ? What am I missing. Hafspajen (talk) 18:11, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

If an interloper may intrude: I think Central Europe reappeared Phoenix-like as a geo-cultural region after the Wall came down, etc. (die Wende, per German). The Poles seemingly want to be thought of as part of Central Europe, but to my mind (having lived in PL) they're Eastern Europe. Central includes DK, D, CH, A, CZ, maybe Luxembourg. Slovakia and all the ex-Yugo states are Eastern.
(Having said that, the geographic center of Europe officially is in Lithuania, of all places.) Sca (talk) 14:09, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
I'd like to hear the editor's own explanation; perhaps they are confused about Jews - Middle East - Eastern Europe? Kind of like I am confused about where things are in Africa and in Central vs. South America. Or perhaps as I suggested to them, they just got the wrong Arbcom sanctions template - they are part of our proliferating bureaucracy. I dunno ... Yngvadottir (talk) 19:27, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
true, I have no idea about Africa either. America I can better since I used to visit my relatives and go for long drives - once we went from Los Angeles up to Vancouver - took a month or so... So, yes, if you like in America - then it could be the same. Hafspajen (talk) 06:20, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
You English, can you jugde this edit, I think is a child.... [42] Hafspajen (talk) 08:57, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I'm inclined to agree with you. I see someone explained as well as leaving a welcome template, and I like the note you left. Yngvadottir (talk) 11:49, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
I left that w-template - because I thought that a 16 year old who was trying to make her first add to encyclopedia might never come back again if treated like this - what I mean, was she right? (he..) Because if it is true, some of the comtent could be added back, with aref, just to be nice, to her/ (him) I have a feeling it's a girl. Hafspajen (talk) 13:04, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
It's complicated. As the article says (and I've added a couple of variables that were in the cited source), what words one uses (and when one eats the big meal, and what time the evening meal happens ... ) are an index to class and to a certain extent region (there are a lot of such things: see U and non-U English), but the editor is also right that there's a child vs. adult dynamic ... however, that applies more to the upper classes than others :-) Nursery tea used to happen before Mummy and Daddy went to or started their dinner party. My sources on current usage amongst the socially comfortable are limited, but I reckon there might well be printed sources. I hope he or she comes back with one. Thanks for adding the welcome template, then! I believe I said to 74 once - we used to see people adding a lot of those, it was seen in certain quarters as a way to up your edit count, and we have a big range of them to suit most tastes and a lot of special purposes, but now it doesn't seem to occur to people to add one. I think one of the reasons is that the Teahouse came along and its organisers conveyed the message that they were taking over with their way of doing things, and you still see the Teahouse bot posting invites on talk pages, but part of the Teahouse's whole raison d'être was to avoid linking to policies, and in any case the invite conveys no information except that there's a place to ask questions. And because the community felt odd about bot invites, the vast majority of user pages don't even get that. I know some new editors find the welcome templates intimidating, but personally I think the more information we give them upfront - including a range of ways of asking for help, because not everybody is the Teahouse type, I would have been very weirded out - the fairer it is. We use words like "notable" and "consensus" in a very odd way, and look at the situation below with the MOOC - and that editor never got an intro to our policies and terminology. So on balance I think we should revive the old culture of welcoming, and use whatever templates we personally like, not just the one Twinkle uses. (74 focused on the Teahouse instead.) 74, please come back if you're out there .... Here's a wall o' text to make you feel at home :-) Yngvadottir (talk) 13:24, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
  • Oh, I think I found a source on this in the book Traditional cooking by Carolin Conran. No, I don't think she will be back, not unless we add back what she wrote - well, formulated in a more encyclopedic way .Hafspajen (talk) 13:40, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Well indeed, and I said to some American: I was sick on the boat. - He said, no, ill. And - Jam! NOT preserve, no no.Hafspajen (talk) 13:45, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Will you give a thougt about translating this? Has something this. Hafspajen (talk) 09:30, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, I will if no one else does (but see items above for other things on my to-do list this "weekend", and I need to help poor Drmies more if further problems arise with his good deeds). I wound up editing the Latin article (!) and had to figure out how to kill Viz Ed to do so (!!), and is there really no other article on the associated set? Yngvadottir (talk) 14:43, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
No, only the Latin. Very brave of you to go Latin... I speaks some, but the grammar ... no, that is not something I can. But I can actually read Latin, first my botanical words and it is very similar to Spanish and Italian .. so all that together gives me a kind of a kitchen -Latin. But only words- no grammar. Hafspajen (talk) 17:26, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Not my favourite language, not by a long way. However, something just came up; see my recent edits. (I also had to dismiss Viz Ed on Catalan Wikipedia, sheesh.) And I still have one and a half requests by others on my plate. And an article draft for which the necessary books are due back soon. So no promises about speed, but I should be able to do both. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:30, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
Oh, Viz Ed is only good at commons - but it is not working properly like 4 times of 5 - looks like the archives are saved. Hafspajen (talk) 18:36, 9 September 2014 (UTC)
