Comment about recent "warning"

edit

I did nothing as a "test" to Mario Party 8. The list is cruft. Using a warning when I did nothing wrong = abuse of warnings. If you would've looked at the other Mario Party articles: you can clearly see it's not setup as a list, MP 8 is no exception. Not being out doesn't make a difference. Wikipedia isn't a buyer's guide or anything similar: if people want to find out about games they can check out gaming sites. RobJ1981 17:28, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Adoptee

edit

Hello. I am User:TheListUpdater and I wish to be "adopted". Although I joined over a year ago and have made under 500 edits, they are mostly basic Wiki tasks (such as grammar, links, external links, redirects, and so on). I would generally like to know about more stuff in Wikipedia, such as

  • making tables
  • founding and maintaining successful WikiProjects
  • knowing exactly how to make a reference
  • exposing who exactly vandalized (like edit summaries with things like "Reverted edits by 232.323.232 on 12:23 January 12, 2006")
  • placing and resizing images
  • making a User page look really nice

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by TheListUpdater (talkcontribs).

Hello. Thank you for your offer. I accept. I joined at the same time as you, however I have problems keeping hold of my fingers and I'm always putting in hasty edit summaries whenever somebody adds something to an article i don't like. Ie ownership issues. I thought if I was adopted by someone they could help me over come that and be more nice to editors who add things i don't like?--I'll bring the food (Talk - Contribs - My Watchlist) 01:01, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your edit to Best Buy

edit

I don't want to get into a revert war here over the Christmas issue again. This issue has been discussed at great length on the talk page and a consensus was made by all involved that we would not accept that entry on the page - the reasons are discussed in great detail. Please do not continue to just my edits on the fly until you've read the talk page. Thank you. B2bomber81 04:37, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks - I deleted it from your talk page because I thought I sorted it out ok and didn't want to bother you. There is still no notification on the original page but I am hoping someone will fix that for me or I will figure it out - which ever comes first. CheersPeter Rehse 05:44, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

And I figured the rest out also - thanks again.Peter Rehse 05:57, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Epigenetics and Ads

edit

Could you please remove the ads on the epigenetics page in the external link section. I don`t know why you reverted the status. They are not appropiate for an encyclopedia and most links are useless. Thank you. TraumB 13:26, 25 January 2007 (UTC) Reply

Vandalism warnings

edit

Hi there.

Regarding your warnings to 129.67.43.240 (talk · contribs) about their edits to Men's rights... a moment's look at the history shows that "the edit [you] reverted" was in fact seven consecutive edits, mostly with descriptive edit summaries, removing disputable material (including one paragraph studded with "citation needed" tags and marked as totally disputed) and stuff which, on a brief glance, certainly sounds like it could reasonably be seen as non-neutral. This isn't vandalism - it may not be improving the article in the eyes of some readers, but removal of text, where an explanation is given, is the normal editorial process at work.

I also note you slapped on a third-level warning - this IP hadn't been warned in two months and is clearly marked as shared among a university on the talkpage. It's very unlikely this is any of the same people messaged before; please don't escalate these warnings any faster than they have to. It upsets people and drives away contributors.

You seem to be running at about one or two semiautomated rollback-and-warnings a minute; please don't let the thrill of playing whack-a-mole with vandalism override your common sense. We need the latter far more than anything else. Shimgray | talk | 19:36, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Spam reports to AIV

RE: Your message on WP:AN/I

edit

If you notice the same vandalism coming from multiple IPs it is probably a good idea to report the IP's to WP:OP so they can be investigated. I shut down a number of those IPs after I confirmed they were open proxies.--Isotope23 20:09, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I just found out about WP:OP yesterday so I'm probably not the best source of info about it... I'd imagine if you contacted one of the project members they could tell you more.--Isotope23 20:19, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oh and I'm not going to protect that article right now because it looks like the vandalism has stopped for the time being. protects and semi-protects are preventative and the vandalism was several hours ago.--Isotope23 20:22, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Just another question, what sort of script are you using to make it easier to interact with other users through talk pages? I find it a little bit exacerbating not knowing where I should be looking for replies (my talk page or the other user's). Does this script also notify you when someone replies to your message on their talk page? Yonatanh 23:42, 26 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
The best way to know if where a user will respond is to look at his or her talk page guidelines. If the Wikipedian says that he or she will respond on his or her talk page, I suggest temporarily watching that page. I reply on the user's talk page and include a link to my reply on my own talk page, so anyone who is reading the discussion can follow it. I don't use any script. Hope this helps! Your edit to e-mail

edit

I reverted your revert. It looks a lot like vandalism, but biff is actually an ancient e-mail notification tool. I think the link does belong there. If I'm missing something else, though, let me know. --Mdwyer 16:34, 27 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I know, I checked what it was before removing it. Do you suppose we add all email programs to the e-mail article? A link to Microsoft Outlook, Eudora, pine (I think). I don't think so. Yonatanh 01:41, 28 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I understand your position, but I thought Biff was notable in being part of the early history of e-mail. If you remove it again, I will let the edit stand. I was more afraid that it was mistakenly identified as spam. --Mdwyer 06:22, 28 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't mind too much. It just popped up when I was RC patrolling using vandalproof and it seemed like the right thing to do wasn't to include it in the article. Since I admit I don't know much about the subject (other than the little I saw on the [biff] page) I suppose you can make a better decision since you have more knowledge in the area. Change to Brand (external links)

edit

Can you please let me know why you removed the link to the list of blogs about name branding (external links)? I'm not sure I understand what you're using as justification. It appears that the list at the blog is more useful than most of the other links that actively are trying to sell something or get free coverage, including:

  • League of American Communications Professionals recognizes and promotes best practices within the communications and branding industry. Resources include a free monthly newsletter; templates and how-to guides available to members; evaluation services; and competitions highlighting the best communications and branding materials and campaigns within the industry. (Seeking members - and better placed in the Communications category than branding.)
  • New brand approach via style community (commercial brochureware from Dolobo)
  • Leading Consumer Brands from the Muslim World AND Brand (both lead to same link.)
  • Stealing Share - Branding from a different perspective (commercial brochureware)
  • The Big Page of Branding & Corporate Identity (commercial brochureware from LogoOrange)
  • International brands searcher (advertising farm site)
  • Brand Indexes Updated Daily (a little-known for-fee service that tracks brands)
  • Brandnama - a blog on the craft of naming brands (just one of 20 blogs about naming)

The blog you removed is providing a list of places that searchers can find conversation on the topic - many of which are hard to find (suggested by the fact that while there are at least twenty of them only one is accessible via Wikipedia - and it is one of the lesser known ones.) Is this the wrong forum to provide the list? Would an overt link to a page with something for sale (ala Stealing Share, LogoOrange, and Dolobo links) be allowed to stay? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.163.140.163 (talk) 14:18, 28 January 2007 (UTC). I replied to your message on WT:OP. Prodego talk 02:29, 27 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

May I ask what methods you use to check proxies? Prodego talk 03:08, 27 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
That is good, and what I would expect. What do you know about SOCKS proxies? Prodego talk 14:52, 28 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
The SOCKS article is pretty good ;-). I just use this site, it doesn't seem to work all that well with http proxies, but it does work for SOCKS. What proxy scanner/port scanner are you using? Prodego talk 15:05, 28 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Those seem like good tools. I use the all popular nmap, and I don't really use any proxy scanner per se, I use the online tools to replace most of that function. Mostly because I am paranoid of viruses, and while nmap was sufficiently popular for me to use, the proxy scanners... Prodego talk 15:30, 28 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

edit

I got your email, it's kind of sad, really. While I'm sure there are good users there, it appears that frankly despotism is the operation over there. I'm drawing up a formal request for investigation, for lack of a better word- I think metawiki is the last place we can go. Dåvid Fuchs (talk / contribs) 16:09, 30 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dates

edit

I see you have changed a number of dates removing the 'th' in the day - is there a wiki policy on this? It does not read as good English to me. For instance Gibraltar National Day is September 10th not September 10. --Gibnews 20:53, 30 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reply, I was only asking not complaining :) Having read the policy guess we will have to live with it although its less readable by human beings. --Gibnews 09:06, 31 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations

edit

Greetings! After a long period of discussion and consensus building, the policy on usurping usernames has been approved, and a process has been set up to handle these requests. Since you listed yourself on Wikipedia:Changing username/Requests to usurp, you are being notified of the adopted process for completing your request.

If you are still interested in usurping a username, please review Wikipedia:Usurpation. If your request meets the criteria in the policy, please follow the process on Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations. Please note that strict adherence to the policy is required, so please read the instructions carefully, and ask any questions you may have on the talk page.

If you have decided you no longer wish to usurp a username, please disregard this message. Essjay (Talk) 12:46, 31 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Warning restoration

edit

Please do not do this. Restoring warnings after a user has removed them is considered a form of harassment and strongly discouraged. Even if the warnings are valid, once the person has seen them they have fulfilled their purpose. Re-instating them after that is a misuse of the talk page, edit warring, and needlessly inflammatory.

Further, that 'removewarn' template is, as its own text states, intended to be used when the person routinely removes and disregards warnings... as a means of explaining that they are not meant to be retaliatory. It is not meant to be used on every removal and does not imply the right to restore warnings which have been removed. --CBD 11:33, 1 February 2007 (UTC) Reply
