Redaction

Thanks for the block and the redaction on my talk page. There is/was another new contributor working on that particular article - Buffalo crime family - and, aside from making perfectly ok comments in the same thread on my TP, they set up User:BuffCity/sandbox. Nothing has happened with that sandbox since 8 March and I'm concerned about WP:BLP there just as much as I was regarding the mainspace article. The sandbox is just a restoration of material that had been deleted from the article by me. I know the edit summary for the restoration says they'll be working on it but how long do we give? I think BLP applies everywhere, even if the pages are no-indexed. Surely we can't speculate about who may or may not be leading a crime family? - Sitush (talk) 16:08, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Woah, that's an almighty wall o' text. My thinking is along the same lines as yours; BLP violations shouldn't be anywhere on Wikipedia. A compromise might be to get him to blank out or anonymise the names until they are sourced, so you'd get sentences like, "Longtime Buffalo crime family Capo, J.C. was the overseer of the labor and union rackets in the Buffalo areas since the late 1940s and was an influential crime family member.. That way we could maintain BLP and still allow him time to work on the article. Yunshui  16:37, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
I am more into history than BLPs, so my knowledge of the policy nuances may be lacking. But some form of anonymisation would certainly be better than leaving it as it is. - Sitush (talk) 18:04, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
I've suggested this to BuffCity, it seems like a sensible compromise. Technically the page should be deleted outright, but WP:IAR allows for a little wiggle-room. If it's still there and non-pseudonymous in the next few days I'll pull out the big red button. Yunshui  09:18, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Malena Morgan

Hi. May I please have a look at the latest version of article Malena Morgan, preferably without the AfD header, in a draft or sandbox? You are on record as one of the admins who deleted it. Thanks!   — Jeff G. ツ (talk) 23:53, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: If you like. Last version (sans AFD header, cats and tags) is now at User:Jeff G./Malena Morgan. Yunshui  09:20, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Kuni-yuzuri

Hello! Your submission of Kuni-yuzuri at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 22:14, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

DYK for Kuni-yuzuri

On 26 March 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Kuni-yuzuri, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the mythological events of the kuni-yuzuri may be rooted in real historic events? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Kuni-yuzuri. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Kuni-yuzuri), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Administrators' newsletter – April 2017

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2017).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
  • The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
  • An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
  • After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.

  Technical news

  • After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
  • Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.

Crazypredator SPI

Hello, I saw you blocked Crazypredator for SPI abuse with Noble Faith on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Agnivesh Jyotiraditya, thank you. I believe Fan in Awe is also a sock as they created the draft here Draft:AGNIVESH JYOTIRADITYA. Could you please check? Thanks again JMHamo (talk) 18:37, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

I actually made the initial check because I thought Crazypredator was Fan In Awe - that the check picked up Noble Faith was a bonus. However, the CU evidence for Crazypredator = Fan In Awe is   Inconclusive - can't tell either way, from a technical standpoint. Yunshui  21:51, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
On February 9th I believe Agnivesh Jyotiraditya was created by Fan In Awe before it was deleted A7 [1]... Could you check that? JMHamo (talk) 22:10, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
Close enough - the initial version was created on February 8, 2017, at 22:24 by Fan in Awe (who has shown no interest in anything else on Wikipedia ever since). The liklihood that FIA=Crazypredator is very high; I just can't tie them together technically (and don't like to block non-CU-confirmed socks without an SPI, which, if I'm honest (it's late here) I can't be arsed with right now. If your timezone is behind mine and you've got a spare five minutes, go for it, though.) Yunshui  22:18, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
Just be aware that, given the dates, Fan In Awe is the master account, not Crazypredator. And with that... off to bed. Yunshui  22:20, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

HotCat

Hello, you said that i should activate hotcat for adding the categories, but the way described was not helpful and I cannot seem to activate it. Any other ways to add a category list? I am on google chrome if that is important. YZM1987 (talk) 11:00, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

@YZM1987: Well, the other option is to use the manual process - open the article in edit mode, and then at the bottom of the page, type [[Category:name of category]]. So, for example, if you wanted to add the page to Category:Biscuits, you would add [[Category:Biscuits]] at the bottom of the article. The disadvantage to doing it this way is that you have to know the exact name of the category first. Yunshui  11:19, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

NetMan

Hi! I was looking at the copyvio problem at NetMan and went to look for the OTRS ticket. Apart from the one you'd answered, I found two others; one is in Farsi (#2017042310004879), but another is in English; rightly or wrongly, I've merged that into ticket #2017042310007303, but have taken no action other than to note the ticket number on the article talk-page. I never know how it's best to let someone know about a merge, but hope a message here will reach you as soon as anything else. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:05, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

Here is as good as anywhere... thanks for the information and the merge. Doesn't look as if there's any action to be taken at this point (waiting on user response) but at least everything's in the same place now. Yunshui  08:00, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Ramon Alexander

Just glanced at the history of Ramon Alexander, which I saw that you'd restored, and to my chagrin find that I inadvertently undid an edit you'd made (I thought I was editing the page as when deleted). Sorry about that, please freely revert if you think it right to. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 16:40, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Nah. I did restore the section I'd just re-written when Primefac deleted it, but actually you're both right - it's a primary source and really shouldn't make up quite so much of the article. Feel a bit bad for the guy (who released his entire website under CC-BY-SA to get the page restored), but at the end of the day, this is WIKIPEDIAAA!!! and we have guidelines for BLPs that suggest the section should be removed. Yunshui  08:19, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

Test edit?

Should this be classified as a test edit or deliberate vandalism? Came across this while using WP:Stiki. --Skr15081997 (talk) 12:46, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

Reasoning behind A7 on MR Ghaziabad

I realize a7 doesn't require sources however my reasoning behind tagging it as such is because I did a little WP:BEFORE and came up with nothing other than some stuff on FB. The competition(s) itself is totally non-notable to the point that I'm not even sure it's real. See here. It appears to be a place (maybe?) but no real competition. So I was going with more that the C in CS wasn't very credible. ;) The name Vishal Trikha came up with even less. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 16:16, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

Also adding that I found this video on YT which indicates the 2017 year was the second year it has taken place, so maybe the article is a hoax too... CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 16:18, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

@Marvellous Spider-Man: I don't immediately see a good reason not to give them back, but it's a slightly left-field request - just to set my mind at ease, can I ask what prompted the original request for removal? Yunshui  14:13, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

For what it's worth

I think it would have been a good idea either to give more diffs, or none at all. He seems to have taken your comment as being solely about the recent "maintenance tags" and "licensed fan-fiction" issue.

I can see your comment was actually about a lot more, but he didn't exactly respond with "I understand. My communication method has been well below the standard expected of an experienced Wikipedian. I apologize for the disruption I have caused, and will try to do better."

We'll see if he actually does that anyway. Hope springs eternal and all that jazz.

Hijiri 88 (やや) 12:59, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

Conversations appear to have started, which is a good... er... start. Yunshui  13:11, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
You're right, and we'll see where it goes. The conversations have started regarding the notability of those two articles. But I really don't know why I am explaining our notability guidelines to someone who apparently (? -- sorry, you can see the articles he wrote that got speedied, but I can't) had his indef block removed three years ago partly on condition that he stop creating articles on non-notable topics. Four-year old accounts with more than 10,000 edits really should not have to have these things explained to them, especially when they start biting. Hijiri 88 (やや) 13:30, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
True - but then I've been here about twice that long, and I still get schooled from time to time. Things is, people do tend to interpret our guidelines differently; there's usually a degree of wiggle-room (given that pretty much all our policies were designed by committee). I tend to agree that minor characters from a TV show rarely merit their own articles, but some do - deciding which ones fit into that category is why we have talkpages in the first place. If I may offer some friendly advice - try to regard other users as mates with whom you discuss things down the pub. You don't always have to agree with one another, you don't even have to be especially polite (though it helps), but at the end of the day, you're all in the same pub and the beer is jolly tasty. Yunshui  13:39, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
Sorry... I'll read your comment and reply when I wake up tomorrow... I was planning on posting the below and then sleeping, but I didn't want to do so without comment for fear of giving the impression that I saw the above and ignored it. Well, technically I did see and am ignoring it. For the specific reason that every time I go to the doctor with some back pain or something, he tells me that I should get more sleep. If I read the above my wiki-addiction will kick in and I'll have to think of a reasonable response.
TLDR: Will hopefully get back to you within 24 hours.
Hijiri 88 (やや) 13:45, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
Okay, got to this sooner than I thought because of an unusually comfortable commute (a seat opened up at Shin-Imamiya where most days I have to wait until Tennoji, if I can sit down at all).
Meh. Honestly my problem is not so much that they are minor characters in the TV show as that they are minor characters in the books, whose relative importance is played up in the show, and it seems like a violation of WEIGHT that major point-of-view characters from the books like Arianne Martell are confined to lists, while Khal Drogo gets his own article just because the writers of the TV show appear to be in that subset of fans that think the Dornish storyline in the books is boring.
My personal opinion on fictional character articles as a whole is somewhat like Drmies's (extreme) view expressed here, but I don't think any proposal of that kind would pass on English Wikipedia.
Regarding mates down the pub: Yeah, that's pretty much how I interact with Curly Turkey. If you look at our discussions on his talk page, we actually rarely agree on either Wikipedia policy points (except insofar as 90% of long-term contributors would agree with both of us) or real-world issues like whether the Star Wars prequels are passable as poorly-written but enjoyable sci-fi popcorn flicks or just garbage (ironically I think more people would probably agree with me, since CT holds the latter view but not because he views the originals as classics, which puts him on the remote fringe).
I just have little patience for people who have been here long enough that simple policy should be second nature to them, but who nevertheless seem not to have the faintest understanding of it, and refuse to listen. I say "policy", because the notability issue with his standalone GOT articles is actually only a small part of the problem. On his userpage, he takes credit for having helped bring a bunch of articles to GA standard, but actually much of the text of those articles was copy-pasted from other Wikipedia articles without attribution, and ... well, we'll see if he stops reverting edits as "disruptive", "vandalism" or "removal of sourced content" without reading their edit summaries. You may have noticed, but after honing in on one small part of your message to him as though the rest hadn't existed, he blanked the entire section, so I am still skeptical. I'm assuming good faith in that I think he probably feels that his having not been blocked yet means he is in the right on these points, and miht well change his ways if he got a slightly harsher warning than you gave and that I am able to give.
Hijiri 88 (やや) 22:37, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
You may be right, but like I said, I'm personally disinclined to issue blocks based on general rather than specific behaviour problems (YMMV, I'm not the only admin on the site!). That said, after yesterday I (and I believe a few other admins) now have eyes on AffeL's editing, and someone, maybe me, maybe some other poor sod with the bit, will step in if he continues in the current vein. My hope is that we see some improvements - but then, I'm also hoping that Labour win the UK election today, so blind optimism seems to be my thing at the moment. Yunshui  07:03, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
Meh. It's my impression that Brexit might have woken the British Left up, similarly to what has happened in the US since the last presidential election. "Optimism" would be believing Labour will win (as I do); hoping they will win but not thinking it likely would be pessimistic. Disillusionment with "New Labour" left the party in a shambles, which is really the main reason the Tories came to power (see also: low Democratic voter turnout in the US last November), but I get the impression (removed though I am...) the reason Corbyn became a thing is that people realized how much they had messed up by not voting last time there was something vote on, and that "enthusiasm", for want of a better word, is still there. But I could well be wrong. Ironically, even though I watched the BBC and Sky News more than RTE growing up, right now I get most of my non-Japanese news from The Young Turks, and Cenk Uygur is really optimistic about the British election. And it might be worth noting that he was the one leftist in American media who really disliked Hillary and implied he would write-in Bernie in protest, but wound up voting for Hillary anyway because he realized before it was too late that a Trump win was a genuine possibility. Hijiri 88 (やや) 09:00, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
I guess I'm really a pessimist, then. Having had a conversation this morning in which I discovered that one of my colleagues had vote Conservative for the first time ever because "Teresa May did really well in debates and will be a strong Brexit negotiator", I've pretty much lost all hope for this country. Yunshui  09:05, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
(edit conflict)By the way, I'm well aware that one or both of those topics may meet GNG. That's why I templated them rather than redirecting. The reason I templated Khal Drogo, though, is because I'm not motivated enough to do the leg-work and prove that the topic is not notable. I suspect AffeL probably agrees with me that we can't make a decent article of that topic, and won't open that discussion because it would involve either admitting I'm right or "fighting" and "losing". Honestly, I don't think the article talk pages are the place for these discussion; an RFC should be opened at WT:ASOIAF on whether the large swath of redirects he and one or two IPs expanded into standalone articles should be turned back into redirects, and there should be a definitive guideline on how to determine the notability of fictional characters. I had already tried both of these options, mind you. Just saying that no discussion between me and AffeL will solve this problem. Hijiri 88 (やや) 13:45, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

DYK for Tenjukoku Shūchō Mandala

On 10 June 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tenjukoku Shūchō Mandala, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the original 7th-century elements (detail pictured) of the Japanese Tenjukoku Shūchō Mandala remain better preserved than the replica created approximately 600 years later? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tenjukoku Shūchō Mandala. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Tenjukoku Shūchō Mandala), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thank you! - You don't need to start the discussion mentioned above (with a hint at my health), - Francis did it, link on the bottom of the article talk. The question why 200+ cantatas can have a link to the Bach Cantatas Website but not this one (in my simple wording). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:26, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

DYK for Shinnyo

On 12 June 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Shinnyo, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Shinnyo was the first fully ordained bhikkhuni for several hundred years? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Shinnyo. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Shinnyo), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Could you have another word with AffeL?

His recent edits are ... not great. As I hinted after your first message to him, it looks like he has just taken your comments as applying solely to his creation of articles on non-notable characters (which I will get around to AFDing as soon as I can be sure he won't just filibuster it), and has not altered his behaviour at all. He continues to ignore talk page messages (posting the same "responses", in the same words, over and over again) wikilawyering around the definition of "edit-warring", adding and re-adding questionably sourced content, and so on. Most egregiously, he claimed on FAC to have performed a thorough source check of our Peter Dinklage article in the space of two hours, and it only took me half an hour to find some unsourced material in the second paragraph of the body. When I confronted him about it (in the collapsed section of the FAC here) he claimed repeatedly that it had just been a mistake and that he had in fact not been lying when he claimed to have checked 150 citations in two hours.

I'll be putting together an ANI draft later today or tomorrow, but if you or someone else had a bit more of a clearer word with him, and he admitted that his behaviour up to this point had been wrong and promised to try to change, I would probably not have to.

Much reading to be done here, which to be honest I probably won't have time to do today. ANI may be a faster venue, but I will take a look when I have enough time to go through all the information. Yunshui  09:28, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! Sorry for the trouble. I've actually got a slightly more stressful real-life situation until around tomorrow lunchtime than I thought (gotta teach a particular type of lesson for the first time in eight months that honestly went over pretty well last time but always has me nervous as hell), so it'd probably not have been tonight that I got around to ANI anyway. But hope springs eternal that another, perhaps more specific, message from an admin actually ameliorates the problem at least to the extent that an ANI thread isn't called for for another coupla days. Hijiri 88 (やや) 10:02, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
Then again, I must apologize for not having made things easier for you. I'll scrounge together a few of the worst diffs and post them here. Hijiri 88 (やや) 10:07, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
The following is somewhat abridged, naturally. You can feel free to read whatever else you want apart from this. I don't think I'm leaving out any significant details from the last week or so. The bullet points are also in no particular order, except that the worst three are given last (the third-to-last is actually a pet-peeve of mine; it's counter-policy and all that, but I imagine other editors who have never had to deal with a certain other banned/retired editor might see some of the others as being worse).
  • Denial of edit-warring charges based on a wikilawyer-ish "definition" of edit-warring.[2][3]
  • Copy-pasting the same IDHT response to a legitimate concern about sourcing seven times in a row.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10]
  • Engaging in off-topic commentary about how much more popular Game of Thrones is than its source material,[11] then repeatedly attacking me for responding to said off-topic commentary[12][13] and going so far as to directly claim that he wasn't the one who brought it up.[14]
  • Repeatedly collapsing my FAC comments or decontextualizing them by leaving uncollapsed only my first comment and his non-response, but none of my further responses.[15][16][17] I had actually given him permission to collapse everything except my first comment, but he misquoted that[18] and later admitted to having not carefully read it before acting on it.[19]
  • Reinserting a counter-consensus content with the rationale that there has been no specific consensus not to include it, even though there had been a standing consensus for almost two years[20][21][22] or with no explanation at all.[23][24]
  • Repeatedly claiming to have done a thorough source review of a long article containing at the time some 146 inline citations in roughly two hours,[25][26][27][28] hand-waving evidence to the contrary as "must have missed that one"[29] and dodging requests to clarify whether he means something else when he says he did a source check.[30][31] (Although he did specify what he meant -- I can to the "Sentence X in our article is an accurate summary of the claim made in paragraph Y of this source Z" thing at the talk page. -- before promising to do it, and he very openly did not do that.)
  • A couple or baseless accusations of sockpuppetry against me and User:Curly Turkey.[32][33] (I explained how it is baseless here, although I really shouldn't have to explain myself to someone who was blocked for a year and created nine sock accounts to evade said block.)
The above would actually be enough for an ANI thread, but I'm going to try to sum up all the other nonsense from before last week as well. The above could easily be interpreted as a "content dispute" over the Dinklage FAC by someone who didn't read into the other stuff as you already did.
Hijiri 88 (やや) 11:14, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
The sockpuppetry accusations are beyond the pale, and just earned him a block. As for the rest - that probably merits a community review at ANI. Yunshui  08:16, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Testex

Hi, I don't know if you picked up TESTEX's removal of my message. It seems absolutely clear that he/she is not here, and is just seeking any way of being able to continue spamming. Keep up the good work Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:07, 22 June 2017 (UTC)

I am dubious, but AGF, etc... I'm currently checking with Boing! said Zebedee to see what the process is for clashes between the Unified Login and local username policies, but even if renamed, I would want assurance that they are going to do something other than write up their company's history before considering an unblock. Kind request?

Thank you for your warm support on the new WP:WikiProject Karate, if you could add your support to the proposal at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Wikipedia:WikiProject Karate it would be very warmly appreciated, even if you are not planning on joining as a participant (it is recommended to get the support of 6 editors before formally agreeing the projetc is valid). Many thanks, Mountaincirque 11:34, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

Support duly added. Yunshui  11:41, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
