Bellevue, Oregon

Hi there~ I hope you don't mind I've been tinkering with some of the articles you started. I see you wikified Oregon State Route 153 instead of my choice of Bellevue-Hopewell Highway. I did that because the latter is linked to List of Highways in Oregon, while Oregon State Route 153 (aka Route 153 (Oregon)) only links to Bellevue, Oregon, and I was kinda hoping someone would write an article on it someday and take care of the existing redlink. You seem to know the area really well--do you think you could write an article on the Highway, whatever the heck it's called? (Maybe you already are...) Then the whole linking mess can be straightened out. Keep up the good work! Let me know if you add articles on any of those other nifty little places around there. Katr67 04:02, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Actually, the way I understood it--though the explanation in the article is little murky--the named highways like our Bellevue-Hopewell are supposed to become state routes, though many are still unsigned. At least, the ones in that article with blue links redirect to pages that read "Oregon State Route XX". For example, the link Antelope Highway aka Oregon Highway 293 aka Route 293 (Oregon) etc. all redirect to Oregon State Route 293, so that is the impression I get. Of course whoever linked and redirected those could be wrong. Maybe we can ask one of the people who works on those highway articles a lot. So complicated...I think I'll stick to cities and communities.

Post Offices

All the post office info comes from Oregon Geographic Names. I have a copy out from the local library. If you google for some of these cities, you will find info copied and pasted (or inaccurately typed) word-for-word from there. Generally when I cite OGN, everything I write after that is from the same source. (Speaking of typos, can you check the spelling of Lawerence Gallery?) Hope that helps! Neskowin big bad typos

Ohmigosh, sorry about that. I was copying and pasting from my favorite boilerplate, which another editor had written for Warm Springs, Oregon, and since I didn't have my word file handy where I keep stuff like that, I just copied it from the above article. Very sloppy of me. And apparently I can't type either. "Neskovin", yeesh. Let this be a reminder to never edit Wikipedia in a hurry when you're supposed to be working. Clatsop County "towns"

I'd rather the heading was just labeled "Cities", especially after all the work I went through to make it clear that Oregon doesn't have any "towns": Category:Towns in Oregon. The legal entity "city" denotes that the community is incorporated and doesn't have anything to do with size. Can you give me a better argument than "some of them are small" to justify the heading? I finally checked your edits, St. Johns, + some advice

I looked over Twin Rocks, Springbrook, and Barview and made some changes. Be sure when you're paraphrasing OGN that you get the facts right and don't get too wordy. Actually OGN is pretty wordy already and the writing can be tightened up considerably.

Also, some of your edits look like they might be original research? Especially the ones that say what things you can see from the highway, etc. Nowhere near as bad as here or here, but we should probably try to get away from adding stuff like that. I know it is tempting since some of these places don't have a lot of info unless we start digging in the library. (Which isn't a bad idea, but time consuming.) If we can't get more than a sentence out of a place after some diligent googling, the place just might be non-notable and not worth an encyclopedia article.

Did you unilaterally decide to move St. Johns to Saint John's or did you consult others? If you acted on your own, that seems unwise, since it is most commonly referred to as St. Johns. Be prepared to get some flak about that. Someone else questioned your renaming of the Cloverdale article. It might be a good idea to start communicating with other editors about your changes.

BTW, our favorite word "unincorporated" was recently moved to "unincorporated area" so I guess our edits ought to start reflecting that.

Sorry if I sound harsh. I'm glad you care about small communities too and I want the articles about those places to be well-written so they don't get nominated for deletion for being insignificant. Keep on editin' Katr67 05:26, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Categories

Hey, thanks for doing some work in the Yamhill County, Oregon area. However, per Wikipedia:Categorization, articles that are allready in a sub category generally should not be added to the parent category. For instance Shipley and the Sheridan Bridge are both in the Sheridan category which is a sub category of Yamhill County. Generally if an article is in a city category then it is already in a sub category of a county. Let me know if you have any questions. Aboutmovies 02:15, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Recent work

Hello again. Just wanted to say great job expanding and sourcing on Dayton, Oregon. A lot of these smaller communities don’t get as much attention as the major cities. Just few other points though. With Springbrook and any article you shouldn’t remove citations, see WP:CITE, and though OGN may say it, there are many editions of this book (first one was published in the Oregon Historical Quarterly in the 1920s) and not all have the same info. For verifiability as full of a citation as possible is preferred. Also, with Benton County, Oregon I see you added a bunch of Redlinked communities, which is technically fine, however most of the regular contributors to WP:ORE avoid adding Redlinks unless we are going to be making the article ourselves within a few weeks or it is a topic that is already redlinked elsewhere or could be by simply adding brackets on existing articles. Obviously some of the communities will have links other than Benton County, but some won’t. But that’s our opinion and you don’t have to agree. Though I will say it’s better to make friends and build consensus than make enemies on Wikipedia. Another way to look at it is that instead of spending time on adding all these links you could focus on making a new article for one of the places and get it promoted to the Main Page of Wikipedia through the Did You Know feature. If you go the WPOR talk page you’ll see some tips to help make that happen. It’s a nice way to get some recognition for your work. Anyway, sorry to ramble on, great job again with Dayton and hopefully you can expand some of the other smaller communities in the valley. Aboutmovies 21:45, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

September WPOR Collaboration of the Week

First off, great job to all WikiProject Oregon folks for last week’s List of Oregon State Parks work. We pounded out six new state park articles: Sarah Helmick, Bald Peak, Bob Straub, Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge, Tumalo, and Peter Skene Ogden. Plus numerous other edits to improve the existing articles. As a reward, we are introducing the COTW award {{WPOR COTW award}}, and this time it goes to User:Woodstein52 for starting three of the articles.

Fall WPOR COTW

Welcome to autmun and the weekly COTW news. Great job to those who helped out with last week’s articles: Darlene Hooley & Thunderegg. Both made great improvements. This week, something a little different. With fall upon us, the photo ops are going to be harder to get, so we have a photo request fulfillment drive. Take a look at the requested pictures for Oregon category or the graphics subproject for what’s needed. Then go take a picture, or search online for a free picture to upload (US gov sites are great and there are links available from the above links). Week 1 October WP:ORE COTW

I know everyone has been waiting anxiously for this week’s COTW, so here they are: Barlow Road and Columbia River Plateau. Both are almost Start class, just some formatting and referencing, plus a little expansion and they will be there!

As to last week, it is difficult to track the items we were working on, but I know some pictures were added and at least three red links were removed from Oregon, so thank you to all those who participated. WPOR CoTW: Don Schollander & Conde McCullough

Greetings WPOR world. Last week was great with the Barlow Road seeing lots of improvement, maybe even B class. Columbia River Plateau also saw some improvement, maybe enough to bump it to Start. On with the countdown, another two Stubs in the High category, both happen to be people: Don Schollander a multi-gold medalist; and then world-renowned bridge architect and all-around swell guy Conde McCullough. Schollander needs sources more than anything, and McCullough needs more of a bio, plus maybe a nice chart for the bridges with type/year/location/length. Holiday COTW

New Year COTW from WP:ORE

Happy New Year to all the Oregon WikiProject People. A big round of applause for everyone last year, we got a lot done. A thank you to everyone who helped with the last Collaboration of the Week, I saw a large number of articles in the unassessed section and our total number of articles is over 5000 (we were around 4000 in June when the assessment program finished the initial run) so I know at one person was busy tagging. This week we are back to a High importance Stub article the one and only max security prison, first prison, and only one with a death row in the state, the Oregon State Penitentiary. Oregon GA COTW

Howdy to WikiProject Oregon members, time for another edition of the Collaboration of the Week. As you may have already noticed, our flagship article Oregon is up for the third time as we make a push to get WP:GA status before going for WP:FA. Since this will take some time to get where it needs to be, this will be the COTW for more than just a week. On another note, just a general good job/pat on the back to the project for a great 2007, the first full year of the project. We had 83 DYKs about Oregon, improved one article to FA, and went from around 4 GAs to 17 GAs. Last week was a very successful endeavor with great improvement to Oregon Swallowtail and Deuce Biglow Canyon Wind Farm. OK, so there’s no “e” but it makes me laugh. Wiki Loves Pride

You are invited! Wiki Loves Pride

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride, a global campaign to create and improve LGBT-related content at Wikipedia during the month of June, culminating with a multinational edit-a-thon on June 21. The project is being spearheaded by two organizers with roots in the Pacific Northwest. Meetups are being organized in some cities, or you can participate remotely. Wikimedia Commons will also be hosting an LGBT-related photo challenge. In Portland, there are two ways to contribute. The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, in partnership with social practice artist Shoshana Gugenheim and as part of the Art+Feminism Project, will host the 2nd Annual International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to edit and/or create Wikipedia articles for Jewish women artists. The event will be held at the museum on Thursday, March 7 from 4 to 8 pm. Pre-registration is preferred but not required. Members of the public are invited to come to the museum to learn about the editing process, its history, its impact, and how to do it. We aim to collaboratively edit/enter 18 Jewish women artists into the canon. Support will be provided by an experienced local Wikipedian who will be on site to teach and guide the process. This edit-a-thon will serve as both a public art action and a public educational program. Participants will have an opportunity to select an artist/s ahead of time or on site.

You are invited! An Art+Feminism Wikipedia edit-a-thon will be held in Portland, Oregon, on March 12, 2022. Learn more here!

Wikipedia is one of the most-visited sites on the internet—and it’s created by people who volunteer their time to write and edit pages. Learn how to edit Wikipedia and be a part of shaping our understanding of our world. In this workshop, volunteer Wikipedia editors will be on hand to train participants on how to get started editing pages and offer ideas for which pages you can pitch in to help improve. Show up at any point during the four hours to get started!

Also: Free burritos!! We will be providing vegan, vegetarian, and meat burritos from food cart Loncheria Las Mayos. Alder Commons has a large, fenced playground. Children are welcome! Some computers will be available to borrow, but if you have a laptop, please bring it to use. We will also be leading an online training for new editors at 11am-12pm PST. Please feel free to join that training if you are not able to show up IRL.
