Google search not working on AWB

Description	I've got the latest version (3.1.0.0), but when I do a google search that normally should produce hundreds of article names, it says "getting list" and then "list complete!" with no results. As a test, I even tried "the", with no results. Google Search was very useful for finding articles with incorrect spelling and punctuation, and fixing each instance in a matter of seconds. Xp shut down bug

Is this really a bug? It seems like this "bug" can be fixed by shutting down AWB before you shut down your computer. It's just hitting the red X and clicking "yes", after all. Sorry if this comment sounds impertinent. Firsfron of Ronchester 21:49, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

This its a bug as AWB isn't working as intended, now if Mets comes back to me and says yes i know what the problem is but it will take 100 hours to fix so we arent going to put the effort in , i'd say fine it doesn't create any major issues and i'll just try to make sure to close AWB (Gnevin 23:35, 9 February 2007 (UTC))

It may be AWB trying to force the "are you sure you want to quit?" box open. Have you tried disabling that message box? (by selecting "don't ask again") —METS501 (talk) 03:11, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

mutlilink bug

Workaround is to use the redirect value instead, but if you don't realize this is the cause, you will be befuddled.

Reparse option not working at all?

Hmmm……it's refusing to work because I was replacing one category with another. If I go to the "Category tasks" selector and clear it down, the "reparse" works fine. Is it maybe halting because it has already done the category replacement, and doesn't realise that there are further changes to be made? It's because when you have the category replacement/removal choice set, it automatically skips articles when no category is replaced/removed. Perhaps an extra checkbox on whether to skip articles when no category is replaced/removed is in order? —METS501 (talk) 04:27, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

New Multilink bug

I can't duplicate this bug in My SVN Version of AWB....

Loaded a Large Category ("Politics of" templates), scrolled to middle, selecting any link doesnt seem to make it move. Unless Mets has solved this? Reedy Boy 12:51, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

He's talking about the list of multiple links, not the listmaker list. AWB's just reselecting the line after you click on it, so it jumps to the top of the list, and then to the link, making the link appear at the bottom. It's just a bit annoying, but I don't see any other way. —METS501 (talk) 14:21, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Unintentional Template Deletion

Regex forms don't allow empty 'replace' fields

Description	The 'Test regexps' and 'replace special' forms will not perform an empty replace. This makes it difficult to remove the match. A match can still be removed by replacing with a space, but this isn't suitable for all tasks. Further, a single space in the replace field is not saved, so it must be re-added when loading settings; the 'test regexps' doesn't perform a replace containing only spaces.

IPA template

Description	On the page tinnitus AWB wanted to add {{IPA|}} right above the categories at the bottom. I removed it and saved the edit ([3]). Now when I open the page in AWB it has no suggested changes. The page contains two IPA templates already (in the intro) so I assume it's related to that, but I tried a couple articles that also transclude that template and there were also no changes suggested. --Galaxiaad 03:59, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

This would be because someone had inserted an empty {{IPA|}} here and between now and December 7, 2006 nobody spotted it. AWB was simply lifting a template from the end of the article to just above the categories, as it normally does. Your edit did in fact remove it, which is why no further changes were suggested. But [[link|links]] and [[link]]s appear the same, because the s is taken into the link. The 's isn't taken into the link so [[Person|Person's]] and [[Person]]'s don't show up the same. Not that it's a big deal either way, but I assume the reason people include the 's in the link is because they think it looks nicer. I actually think it makes more sense logically not to link the 's (to be clear what article it's linking to), and it obviously takes up less space, but... just pointing out a difference. --Galaxiaad 00:52, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Back on topic

I have just been playing around, the mediawiki software doesnt log an edit conflict if the 2 edits are on the same account. But you are correct, there is nothing about the edit conflict if it is on different accounts. I shall add this in Reedy Boy 18:19, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

From my playing about, it is impossible to get MediaWiki to register an edit conflict between the same account.

Mets found it for me. AWB is handling the error, it just does a force reload of the page, re-applying changes, it is just not notifying the user that there has been an edit conflict. I have added a messagebox to let the users know there has been a conflict. As previously stated, you cannot do an edit conflict with your own account (ie 2 edits on 1 account). Good work, but believe it or not, it is possible to have an edit conflict with yourself; it has happened to me several times. Sometimes (very rarely) when you press "Save page", the changes go through but your web browser fails to navigate to the next page, and when you click "Save page" again you get a self-edit conflict. —METS501 (talk) 00:02, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Although i will be unable to duplicate this myself (Not being an admin), the fix will be easy enough, it would be a case of when the page is protected (and by default skipped), look if the account is admin, and if so, allow the edit to continue, rather than skipping. The bit about, adminbot was confusing. So i'll leave it as such until i've spoken to Mets501, or you can clarify. Ie, if they are just a bot, they cannot edit a page with full protect. If they were an admin, and a bot, they could, but the account would have to currently be listed in Admin, so, maybe a section for 'adminbot' and then AWB can handle that, meaning they can edit...?

Pathosbot is listed as a 'bot', you are listed as an admin for AWB. So, this change will affect you, but your bot still wont be able to edit it. As it does it from which ever account is logged on in IE Reedy Boy 19:22, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

The choices are "New instance of Microsoft Script Editor" and "New instance of Microsoft Script Editor 6.0" and the prompt is "Do you want to debug using the selected debugger? (Yes or No)". If I click Yes, an alert box titled "Microsoft Development Environment" pops up with the message "An exception of the type 'htmlfile: Unexpected call to method or property access.' was not handled." It then opens http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php and highlights a line of code that reads styleElem.appendChild( document.createTextNode( sheet ) ); If I click the "No" button seven times, the Just-In_Time Debugging window goes away. I can actually still use AWB, but I have to click the "No" button seven times each time it opens an article, seven times each time it displays the proposed diff, and seven times each time it saves an article.

Strange conversion of newline in advanced find/replace

Verified. See what you mean, the square, if you say, copy the some[]thing to like my irc client, it shows it one line. But press enter, and it pastes it on 2 lines. So it would seem the FAR is still correct, but it needs saving in the xml as like some\r\nthing, and then when loaded, c# would parse it and show it on 2 lines. That would be great. A bit of a waste to see all my settings go down the drain (I had the feeling there was also something else going wrong when I loaded that file (old settings format, it contains several rules with subrules, not one rule with subrules with subrules ..)). As a note, some programs do convert unix-style newlines correctly, but wikipedia does not, i.e. I did not dare to save the page to see if it would go right after saving, but it does not show correctly in the edit-box. Switches to wrong browser

Description	When editing as Pathosbot with Internet Explorer while I edit as Pathoschild with Firefox, the bot will seemingly randomly switch to Firefox and edit as Pathoschild (see example edit). It will continue to edit through Firefox (with Internet Explorer still logged in as Pathosbot) until I reopen AutoWikiBrowser, which switches it back to Internet Explorer (until it happens again). It started doing this today, but I haven't upgraded anything recently (I'm using AWB 3.1.2).

Hello gregul. I think I see the problem. \b is an anchor which matches one of these zero-length positions:

• between the start or end of the string and a word character (digits or letters).
• between a word character and a non-word character.

In the case of the string "tyś.", \b will only match before the t or between ś and the dot (word and non-word character). Weird replacement of a commented sentence

AWB 3.3.0.1 zip file has incorrect directory setup - updater throwing exceptions

Description	The new 3.3.0.1 zip file has a different directory structure to releases before it. In the zip there is a folder called AutoWikiBrowser3300 which holds the files. As far as I'm aware, in previous releases the files have been at the root of the zip file. Edit summaries on find & replace using regex

• The edit summary seems dependent on the original find/replace, even if editing subsequent to the proposed changes is done. In this case, I chose to not go with the adjusted format of the ASINs but to replace with OCLCs. I've also seen this behavior when I opt out of spelling changes suggested by AWB. The article saves as I request, but the edit summary indicates I did something I did not. Another bug, almost certainly caused by the new startup code: Load a settings file containing plugin settings as soon as AWB starts, and the plugin settings aren't applied because the plugin hasn't been initialized yet. Another bug, in debug mode: the sandbox doesn't get added to the article list for a few seconds (first thing I do is clear list).

Yes, it's a problem manually also. I know WP:TW is programmed to use the regular subst when no parameter is provided and to use the subst=subst: when there is a parameter. If AWB can be programmed to do this, that would be great. If it can't, just take out the subst=subst: part. It'll just make the coding a little long. As MaxSem says, this is more of an issue with templates. However, I believe that Special:Expandtemplate does the job properly, and this function is in the current release (but I'd advise against using it due to a unicode bug). There's definitely a problem - I encountered it yesterday, but I just can't figure out the details. What I have tried: before experimenting I reset all setings and checked "Regular expression" and "Singleline" checkboxes.

• ^.*$ → foo $1. Result: foo $1 (no capture group).
• ^.*$ → foo $0. Result: foo <pagetext>.
• ^.*$ → foo $0, apply # of times: 2. Result: foo foo <pagetext>, similar to Pathoschild's one.

Kicking me off

Quick auto mode skips pages when errors occur

Description	When running with 'auto save' and 'Quick save' ('More…' tab) enabled, the bot will skip pages if an error occurs, instead of retrying after a short delay.
To duplicate:	Difficult to duplicate; you would need to create a series of test pages until an error occurs, then look through your list of pages for red links. Out of the 2007 date categories created by Pathosbot on the English Wikisource, 136 encountered server errors and skipped. Of those, 7 skipped again.

In the next version, pages which are skipped will be logged, then you can easily add them back into the main list. This log also records the reason that the page wasn't saved, so you can pick up on false positives in the list generation (etc). AWB "hides" (sometimes) when i adjust Normal and Adv. F&R boxes

Description	I'm thinking it must just be me b/c i thought after two/three updates it was weird that it kept happening. But most of the time when I open up the Normal or Advanced Find and Replace windows once I'm done, AWB will hide behind Explorer 7 Internet browser window while maximized. Works correctly when Desktop is only thing underneath AWB. This may happen more often when i open up the window but don't make any changes. When it doesn't happen, i noticed that the window still minimizes, but is maximized almost instantly (very briefy see underlying window, most easily visible with Restored Down Explorer file-view windows). -ΖαππερΝαππερ BabelAlexandria 06:26, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Skips pages on Wikipedia error

over-large edit box

Thats actually a new feature, that can be reverted. It is there to give users a larger editing area if needed. To change back, Click on General --> Enlarge Edit Area. That should solve the problem. =) Reedy Boy 09:47, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

No, I thought of that, but my problem is that the edit box is too large in its "small" state, i.e. when the "Enlarge Edit Area" is unchecked. (When it's checked, it completely fills the bottom of the screen; when it's unchecked, it takes up 2/3rds of my screen and, as I said, covers the other boxes). Would you like to see a screenprint? The way the bottom bit was laid out was changed in the current version, to allow the enlarging edit box. I presume its something to do with the anchoring and the resolution you use. Mines only 1280x1024.. Take it yours is a 19" monitor. Your make list area looks a bit funny too.... Whats it like if you dont have it maximised? Does it look ok then? The top half of the AWB page adjusts to fit, but the left-hand edge of the edit box stays fixed as you make the page larger / smaller (until it reaches the minimum page size). This does seem strange - when I get a chance, I'll try it out on my 19" monitor, but I suspect that I wouldn't have a problem, considering that you've said that you've tried different resolutions. None that I can think of - the only other change I made recently was to switch from IE to Firefox, but I still have the same problem with AWB even after uninstalling Firefox and restarting. No - the problem is that the Wikidiff web control is in front of the Webcontrol for editing (in which the login window appears). New Message Problem

Description	When a new message is recieved, the talk page is opened up with &action=purge. Then, when Internet Explorer 7 asks if you want to clear the cache, and you click OK, it goes to you user talk page. Not a bug? It's actually expected behaviour in Vista/IE. Cookies and that in a web browser control are generally not applied to the actual browser session. Solution: Logout of your user account, login to the bot account, clear the message and log back into your user account. You don't need to do this for AWB though. AWB needs updating to reflect changes to the m:interwiki sorting order, there is now a interwiki 'be-x-old' which is not recongised by AWB atm, you could please add 'be-x-old' to after 'be' in all cases and possibly release a version bump reflecting this change (as it causes all users selecting 'apply general fixes' to move the link to the wrong place. diff --NigelJ ^{talk SIMPLE} 14:09, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, because be-x-old is not classed by AWB as an interwiki link, it gets moved to just under the article, and looses sorting. In a way, it'd be nice if the three interwiki link orders where to be grabbed from a wikipage instead of hardcoded, (like typo fixes), but that isn't as urgent as been able to run general fixes without destroying interwiki ordering at the moment. --NigelJ ^{talk SIMPLE} 23:48, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Won't make list from user contribtions

To duplicate:	In the "make list" panel, I chose the "User contribs" dropdown. In the user box, I typed SchaiDog. Clicked on the "make list" button, and the program thinks for a minute and says the list is complete, but no list is made. (This was working about 3 weeks ago.) Also tested it with my user name (KApplebaum), and no luck either.

Solution file messed up

Description	After wikidiff was added to the solution, debug builds weren't happening correctly: they were building to /release without the debug symbol. Skip articles when no change made skips all articles

I've tried this with all the featured article candidates with general fixes and RegexTypoFix turned on, and with articles linking to Perth for disambiguation purposes. Fixed rev 1157. The logic had gotten mixed up on the new diff checker.

To duplicate:	Find articles with Wiki Datebase Scanner set to find articles that have titles that AWB will embolden or create one such article. Then run AWB on the article with "Apply general fixes" ticked. It will not embolden the article. You can even choose "Skip if no title boldened" from Skip options, and it won't skip the article, but won't embolden either.

The database scanner finds the bad titles like it's supposed to. Also, after AWB loads the article, it seems to identify the title in text that needs to be emboldened. It's just the actual emboldening that doesn't happen. --Hautala 19:26, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

rev 1158 - Thanks for this report. It highlighted 2 problems. 1, the diff checker was skipping articles when there were changes, and it shouldn't have been (part of your problem) - this wasnt needed, as this had already been checked.
