Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/Questionnaire 1
This questionnaire is now closed. Thank you for your participation! |
The first WikiProject Films questionnaire by the coordinators of the WikiProject is intended to gauge the thoughts of those who edit film articles, whether they are actively involved in the WikiProject or not. With feedback from the community, the coordinators can better work behind-the-scenes to improve the layout of WikiProject Films and to reach out and invite new editors to the WikiProject. The questionnaire was open from beginning of January 2009 to the middle of February 2009. The results will be published in the March 2009 newsletter.
Results
edit1) I consider myself an active member of WikiProject Films.
- 40 people agree.
- 19 people disagree.
2) I am satisfied with how WikiProject Films is currently set up.
- 2 people disagree.
- 7 people somewhat disagree.
- 20 people somewhat agree.
- 24 people agree.
3) I edit articles related to film more than other topics on Wikipedia.
- 14 people disagree.
- 5 people somewhat disagree.
- 16 people somewhat agree.
- 24 people agree.
4) I participate regularly on the community talk page for WikiProject Films.
- 34 people disagree.
- 13 people somewhat disagree.
- 10 people somewhat agree.
- 3 people agree.
5) Can you explain your level of participation, or lack thereof, on the community talk page?
- I participate on individual article's discussion pages, but not the FILM community talk page.
- I have just been caught up with many other projects (in real life and on Wikipedia), and a good deal of the conversation were about things that I did not have a vested interest in (or even really knew anything about).
- I commented on my disagreement about the Film article Style Guidelines, specifically the "Production" category as a catch-all for things that are not in any way production. (I haven't been back to review responses to my comment.)
- Most of the edits I've made haven't been controversial. Sometimes they are, particularly since I have a high standard for sourcing and a low tolerance for fancruft. In instances when collaboration and compromise can't be reached, I tend to seek help at the Admin Noticeboard or a Project's talk page.
- Pretty much zero.
- I find it helpful for discussing policy and asking for help.
- I don't recall ever having an instance in which I felt that anything I wanted to do regarding a film article required community input to the degree that using the project's talk page rather than the talk page for the article in question was necessary.
- I scam through it once a week and see what's going on with the other editors.
- No. I edit pages. I wanted to become a bigger part of the project, but didn't really have time. I may do it soon, we'll see, as such, I didn't really have anything to say on the talk page.
- Well, I'm basically not active.
- I am interested in getting the basics right for Indian films before I can participate in community talk pages.
- No interest.
- There's a community talk page?!
- I'm always happy to throw my 2¢ into any discussion that grabs my interest, and unafraid to be the voice of dissent. I don't expect others to agree with me, nor should others take it personally if I don't agree with them.
- I participate when a discussion of interest emerges; same goes for other wikiprojects I belong to.
- I usually only use the talk page when I have a question about something.
- Some discussions are essential but I have not had a good experience within WikiProject Films.
- Getting actively involved in discussions to improve the project, and bringing some article & category deletion nominations to a wider audience.
- Not very much going on there which I feel needs my participation, many topics don't result in discussions anyway.
- I have several animation topics on my watchlist, and edit these, plus occasional, other film topics. I have not been interested in the discussions per se.
- I spend the bulk of my time on anime/manga articles, mostly working on a handful of Sci-Fi channel type B-natural disaster films. Attempts to work on bigger articles, like Disney films, but found it was too frustrating to not see results and not feel there was any interest within the project to help enhance what should be some of the best articles nor to work to protect them from rampant vandalism.
- Heh, I should participate more often than I do, much of my participation so far has been related to a few featured drives and a featured portal drive.
- I'm new and haven't got much to add (yet) to most of the discussions.
- Fairly "new"... and still feeling out the hierarchy
- I don't often contribute to the talk page the way I tend to in Summer because during the school year (September–June-ish) I am more busy with exams and testing, and thus focus more on minor edits and adoption on Wikipedia than WikiProjects.
- I participate fairly frequently on the community talk page because I want there to be a sense of community. I want editors to know that they can visit the talk page to discuss topics related to film articles on Wikipedia and also find editors who can provide independent assessments of a given situation. I try to respond to topics where I feel that my input could be useful.
- I tend to focus on the articles themselves.
- I haven't even heard of such a page until now.
- I'm less familiar than others with the film guidelines and generally prefer to contribute by doing my own thing.
- I'm just very busy with other projects. My involvement with WP:FILM is limited mainly to a few articles about a few films that I've contributed to a lot and watchlist, one of which is a GA.
- Generally I don't get much time to participate in community talk page, but I do my bit in updating films.
- I'm new and haven't got much to add (yet) to most of the discussions.
- I am not very sociable!
- I think I've "participated" on that page once or twice ever, and then purely to ask specific questions. Don't feel qualified or have the inclination to monitor that page and offer advice to others.
- I rarely have anything I want to say (or anything to contribute to a discussion).
- My major area of work, Malayalam cinema is not discussed that much in the community talk page.
- My major area of work, Bengali cinema is [not?] discussed in the community talk page.
- I can't always contribute to the talk page as there's always some wiki rules I'm not aware of before bringing up new ideas. Also, I fear bringing up something that's already been brought up in the past archives, but I don't have time to browse the archives first.
- I add my two cents whenever a topic that interests me is introduced, and I have asked questions as well.
- I read the talk page but have not found anything to comment on so far.
- I'm not interested.
- I've edited a film here and there, but am still very new as an editor in general. I have a wide variety of interests on wikipedia, of which "films" is only one.
- Few years back I was an active editor and edited mostly on film section. But now as my job has consumed lot of my time, i could not contribute like before. I may start over sooner.
- While I edit articles that fall under the WikiProject's scope, they also fall under other wikiproject's as well and I feel generally it's easier to discuss the info there where I am known as well as probably getting feedback more relevant to the material overall (FE: film with a tv series).
- I only edit films on a one to one basis at present, but if I was to take on more editing, such as looking at all the Stephen Chow films, I would probably join for info on standard templates etc
- I like to edit Telivison shows and Films.
- I participate when subjects come to my attention, or when problems arise that I need assistance with.
- Too many articles on my watchlist.
- I edit a limited number of film articles, mostly based on my interest in those films. As a rule, I monitor WT:Films and try to provide inputs if I can.
- adding free posters, mostly Japanese posters, starting stubs for Japanese films
- I will try to join in on community-wide discussions or ones that interest me. I have started numerous discussions as well.
- Not really, I'm doing other things most of the time.
- I haven't been actively researching film articles in the past 6 months, so have had nothing to contribute. It is still on my watchlist.
- Never felt a need to gather more input or find assistance there.
- Never felt the need really.
- I participate on individual article's discussion pages, but not the FILM community talk page.
6) I participate regularly in the WikiProject's departments and task forces.
- 34 people disagree.
- 4 people somewhat disagree.
- 12 people somewhat agree.
- 7 people agree.
7) In which departments and task forces are you involved, if any? If none, is there a reason why?
- None, due to a lack of time to participate. I would like to being participating again this year.
- None, I've been heavily working on revamping the Horror WikiProject alongside Hornoir (talk · contribs).
- I don't like to be pigeon-holed.
- None; time constraints, mostly.
- I didn't really know that there were any, or that they were active.
- I already had my hands full with my watchlist and other activities. And now I don't have much time.
- I am involved with no projects or task forces other than tangential involvement with WP:LGBT (I don't consider myself a member). Despite the founding principles of the project I don't believe from many past collective activities that the consensus model works, so I just try to stay out of other peoples' ways in doing my edits and hope that hey stay out of mine. I realize that comes off harsh but I believe it works for me.
- American and British Cinema Task Forces
- I was involved with French Film then left for not having time. Again, I may become more involved soon.
- Films isn't a core part of my WP activity. Just random odds and ends
- I am more involved with english films than any other but I see the need for my expertise in south Indian language films. Hardly there are 2 or 3 people who contribute.
- Hadn't previously found a department or task force to add serious time to. This is likely to change within the next several months.
- Korean task force. In relation to my answer above, I seem to be the only active member which doesn't allow for much participation.
- I don't consider myself to be part of a specific task force. I'm more a generalist.
- Video games and Star Wars WikiProject, because those are my interests.
- Italian, French and Bollywood mostly although I've long wanted a Hong Kong cinema and Latin American cinema task force.
- Many of the sub-projects for films by country (America, France, Germany, Italy, etc) and silent films too.
- None, as there simply are not any I really need to join.
- I did not actively join the project myself, somebody else included me...
- there are no task forces that interest me at this time
- Not really too active with these - though I may be in the future, pretty much just maintain the portal.
- American Cinema Task Force
- WikiProject Films, Article Rescue Squadron, WP TV, WPBiography, WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers
- I used to be a regular contributor to review and assessment. My focus is now mainly on copyediting of film articles, rather than any specialised department.
- I primarily participate in the future films department since I tend to edit articles about upcoming films. The department helps centralize tasks to make sure that such articles are properly tagged and assessed. I am also signed up for the Nordic and American film task forces, but I do not really like anything has been done with the task force. I have wanted to create a science fiction film task force (especially due to the lack of genre task forces), but without any real payoff at this point, I am holding off on such a proposal.
- I tend to focus more on the articles themselves.
- What are task forces? I'm a member of the Saw WikiProject, though.
- Not officially "signed up" to any but involved in U.S./Australian task forces and the Future films department.
- Indian Cinema Task Force
- Indian Cinema Task Force, specially in Indian Bengali cinema.
- German cinema taskforce - but only because of the language; I am actually only interested in Austrian films, and seldom go near any other sort of film-related articles
- I rutinely make changes / improvements to film articles. These may or may not come under the jurisdiction of task forces / departments. In the past I would look at the film article as a whole and try to improve it, upgrading from stubs, adding infoboxes, removing npov, formatting and so forth. I have less time to do so now, but do monitor a couple of hundred articles and work on them a bit when I have time. But I don't consider myself part of any task force to do so.
- My interests are rarely covered by the task forces. I've thought about some of the departments but I have not had the time to be involved with them.
- Indian cinema task force
- Indian cinema task force specially Bengali cinema
- I was am involved with French Film task force but I haven't really done anything specifically other then bring two french films to GA status.
- None, but no particular reason why. I have tried to update some templates, such as those for George Cukor and Tennessee Williams, so fewer red links are included.
- I am involved in several Wiki Projects, but this one is not my highest priority given the limited amount of time I have availiale.
- Spanish-task-force. I think I'm the only member active right now, which is very discouraging
- I'm not sure yet all the differences between projects, departments, portals, etc. I answer at Help Desk and Reference Desk for computer. I do spell checks. I patrol new pages. I try to contribute to films, TV, and computer related topics.
- None, I was involved with Indian Films then left for not having time.
- Projects - Greater Manchester, Formula 1, Robotics, Ukraine - may also start new sub project "Norfolk"
- I don't believe I've ever participated in a specific department or task force activity. If I did, it was because I was attracted to the topic independently. / I prefer to edit as subjects arise, or on projects that I set myself to do.
- If you mean by me regularly editing future film articles, then yes.
- Japanese film taskforce
- I contribute to the Assessment, Outreach, Spotlight, and now, the new Resources department. I have joined the American cinema task force, but have been working on American films since first joining the project.
- Mainly invloved in other projects.
- New Zealand Task force - I'm from there.
- Indian cinema task force
8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Yes, but only due to my own time constraints.
- Haven't looked in to it enough to really give a good response.
- Yes, as far as taking part in the task forces and such. Other than that, I work at my own pace.
- I do. Film fans can be highly passionate, like music fans, and tend not to have the research-oriented skepticism of, say, people writing about science, or who come from a professional journalistic background.
- Before I had a baby and went back to work, I didn't find it hard to work on film pages and participate in discussion. I don't have much time right now though.
- I don't attempt to participate in the project.
- I think some of the laws concerning reliable sources are a little too strict.
- Yes, because I often don't have much information about the film apart from the plot, from watching it.
- No, although I just do stuff indpendently.
- Yes: Take a look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bomma Borusa. I almost quit Wikipedia during this conversation. Like I mentioned before there are hardly 2 active users who contribute to Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam films. In case of disputes and edits which are not made with a neutral point of view, there is not enough users participating for settlement of the dispute.
- Difficult in finding something to help with? No. Difficult in previously finding time to contribute? Yes.
- Not at all. Disagreements and the occasional heated debate are par for the course.
- Yes which is why I am no longer a member of the group. I don't always feel free to give my views on certain topics as on numerous occasions I have felt belittled or discouraged in discussion even if it was in good faith. Some editors I can disagree with on some topics even those I think highly of and like (e.g Erik and PC78). Sometimes it feels like a waste of time discussing issues where it is difficult to gain consensus. I have had many good experiences within the group of course with editors and discussions which I have felt happy with but certain discussions sometimes end up being stressful and a little frustrating which I never like to be involved in. There is of course the lead coordinator issue too which I've always perceived as a kind of hierarchy. Having a group of coordinators take responsibility is good but I'm not sure why a "lead" coordinator title should be given as in my view it implies authority and leadership of a project which is supposed to be a collaborative effort betwene equals.
- Yes, you can feel a bit alienated when first joining a large WikiProject and not know exactly what to do to improve articles. Dealing with disruptive users and conflicts can also be stressful.
- Sometimes, if working on an article and not finding the support needed from the project to bring it to good shape. Really, the hardest challenge is sources, of course, particularly for older or less popular films. It wouldn't hurt if the Films project had a reference library similar to the Anime/manga project's, were members with various film books could list what they have and be available to check for sourcing for films within those books.
- Nope, just busy with other projects in addition to improving quality content on a bunch of film-related articles.
- Not really. Everything is explained in straightforward, simple ways. If there is any confusion, there's always people happy to answer questions.
- Not really. There's just so much to do....
- Not at all. It is lack of time that hinders my involvement.
- No, from my perspective, I do not find participation difficult. I am not sure if other perspectives are similar. Some editors seem averse to participation because of a perceived hierarchy (with the existence of coordinators) or because not all discussions have the best comfort level.
- Not really. Everything is explained in straightforward, simple ways. If there is any confusion, there's always people happy to answer questions.
- Not sure that I participate in the project in any meaningful way, except by writing articles on Austrian films, but don't see why there should be any difficulty if I did want to participate more - it seems like a well-run project
- As mentioned above, I work on film articles when I can, and much of the editing I do is what the project aims to do. It's what I'm interested in, so no, I don't find that difficult. However, I don't really feel included in the project as such. That said, if being included in the project meant being given specific tasks to do, I would have no interest in that - I'm not getting paid for this, after all.
- Not that much, I understand how to use infobox, fair use images and the basic structure of articles. I find it easy to find information through reliable new sources on the web and from google book and news search.
- Yes, because of limited time.
- Being so new, I don't feel I can yet answer that question.
- No, but only thing is the lack of time to provide properly edited article.
- Yes - at present as I am only interested in a small select group of films such as some classic Westerns & Spaghetti Westerns, the 50+ Stephen Chow films and the odd other film I may edit the article of as when I have seen a film I normally go to see what Wikiworld has to say about it
- I do stuff indpendently.
- I see no systemic obstacles to participation, just the peculiarities (and deficits) of my own personality.
- no. It is as any other wikipedia project.
- At times it is frustrating to see how more members don't contribute to discussions/elections. For such a large member project, I figure we'd have more feedback in discussions that impact thousands of articles and the future of the project.
- Templates for external databases like {{imdb}}, {{discogs}} or {{allmusic}} are not harmonized. It's real pain in the ass if you need 30 minutes to find out how to use a certain template. That will distract most non-regular editors.
- Lack of time
- I've come across a few WPFilms "acolytes" who have made my editing more difficult; this results in a generally negative view towards the project.
- I participate off and on, more at the frequency of once in a few months. I am really not a very active Wikipedian.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- I'd personally like the Style Guidelines to be redone so that things that are not production are not necessarily subsumed into the "Production" category. Production is the phase of movie making during which principal photography occurs, and could presumably and understandably encompass gaining money for the film as well. The Script is NOT part of production — it isn't even pre-production. The Script exists outside of, and precedes, production and pre-production and funding. Likewise, Score and Soundtrack are not part of production. They are other artforms entirely. The score/soundtrack of a film should not be listed under "Production" as simply another technical problem that was overcome. In my opinion.
- More admin intervention, and -- more than anything -- the establishment of a set policy regarding IMDb, which is great as a source of leads, but which is a quasi-wiki and filled with errors, including in cast and credit lists.
- Perhaps re-establish and encourage partcipation in Collaboration of the Week; but I mainly don't participate in project related matters because I don't really have much to say.
- Make it so I don't have to work. Ha ha.
- Have WikiProjectFilms pay for my college tuition.
- I don't know, sorry. I participated because I love films and I noticed that lots of film pages here were a bit shabby, especially national film pages (Cinema of France, etc.) I don't really know what would make me participate more. If I had more time, apart from that, I dunno.
- Well, I'm not sure, I don't want to become more addicted to WP
- The presence of a film in IMDB should be sufficient for its presence in Wikipedia as an exception for Indian films.
- More consistent updates and directives so a clear and regular change in the film articles of Wikipedia can be seen.
- Find a way to do away with the need to sleep?
- Cash incentives? :) Seriously, not much. I'd say I'm already pretty active.
- I'm a casual Wiki editor these days, so there really isn't much to make me participate more or less.
- I am happy with my current level of participation.
- Take itself less seriously definately. We all want excellent high quality articles but I find a lot of the discussion somewhat politicalised and quite heavy going on a subject which is supposed to have an element of enjoyment to it. I want to contribute to films and improve the encyclopedia and do it casually and have fun rather than feeling under pressure or getting into dispute with any of the group. Certain debates need to be toned down and discussed in a more relaxed friendly fashion with less over reaction from all involved which can leave any editor involved feeling discouraged by.
- Not sure, as I'm quite active in it already and spend most of my Wiki-time on the project.
- More support in getting some articles to FA would be great, for example The Lion King. Perhaps the creation of a Disney film task force might help. Ultimately, I just need more free time!
- Find me more time :-P Stronger project support to back its members when they undertake a film article clean up and face "fan" opposition
- It's organized pretty well already, I like the newsletter and structural setup. Perhaps would be a good idea to have a subpage with some links and tips to common places for research and resources for various subsections of film articles. Good sources for production info, reception, casting, etc.
- A more active enlistment program :)
- Few things come to mind, besides notifying members more often of community functions and events, which I rarely receive notice of.
- I think that greater participation by a larger number of editors would be more appealing, especially when working together in task forces. We have quite a few editors already, but I don't know if there is much collaboration between most of them. I would like to see a quid pro quo culture formed where editors would significantly help one another even if they do not know each other well, and hopefully the favor is returned in the future. Such a culture should be informal, growing from the ground-up. I am not confident of the payoff of contests or competitions to encourage such a culture, though.
- It's not the project's fault, it's mine.
- no opinion - I am happy being at a distance
- Having a links to google book pages that have plenty of information on wide arrange of film topics would be helpful.
- Any failure to participate on a regular basis has more to do with limited time than anything else.
- Perhaps a better list of tings to do?
- I'm already pretty active.
- The one (general) thing I find confusing right now, is I don't understand how an article achieves the rating it has. I have added a lot to a couple articles, but don't know how to get something that's rated a stub class rated as a C or B or whatever.
- The problem is at my end, not at Wiki's end. I have to manage my time well, i will try my best and try to contribute.
- Not enough knowledge about the project to comment
- In general, I find that the activities of the project are too focused on systematizing the formatting and content of articles, to the detriment of the potential value of individual contributions and the possibility of novel solutions to specific problems being superior to standardized procedures as detailed in project guidelines. While a certain amount of standardization is beneficial, I feel that much too much energy goes into closing off choices, without consideration that different films might require different solutions. If the goal is to have boring identikit articles, total standarization is fine, but if the desired outcome is interesting articles which (still) fulfill basic Wikipedia criteria, then too much standardization is a bad thing.
I would (probably) participate more if I felt that the project's emphasis was more on supporting the efforts of people who edit articles, instead of controlling their work.
- Please do make stubs for all Japanese film actors and Japanese film directors with Japanese-English interwiki.
- If this turned into a paid position, I'd devote as much time as possible! But since that won't be happening soon, there isn't too much more that can be done.
- Other than remaining as unbeaureacratic and unobtrusive as possible, nuffin'. :)
- A special or its own league of copyeditors.. who can understand films better than others.
- Not enough involved to suggest solutions.
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- Once in a while. I think it's a nice touch.
- I don't know anything about it and have never heard of it.
- I'm afraid I haven't seen it.
- It's good.
- I usually give it a quick read. It's nice to see what's been accomplished.
- I do and it's OK as it is at the moment.
- Glance at it. Looks well done though.
- I scan its contents for news of upcoming or current things to assist with.
- Yes. It is very well-put together. I wouldn't change a thing about it.
- Usually (hah, now I don't have to elaborate)
- Not really, if I'm being honest. I may glance at it from time to time, but that's it. I tend to know what's going on anyway.
- Occasionally.
- I find it thorough.
- Yes I glance at it occasionally. I think its great and the distributors might I say do an excellent job with it.
- Yes - a useful update to what is happening. Maybe have a focus on a sub-project for a month - say next months n/l could look at cinema of Spain, for example.
- Yes, it is quite good. I would like a section each month giving tips on how to improve film articles, which would make it more interesting.
- I generally only glance at it as it is kinda boring and doesn't really seem to do much but repeat the announcement form
- I do read the newsletter and I appreciate it - I use it to keep up to date on new featured content and update Portal:Film accordingly.
- I skim-read it. It's good source of what movies are coming out soon, but because I don't live in the US, the dates are usually wrong for me and some of the movies which are released 'soon' in the US won't come out for me until months later. :) Oh, well.
- I skim it.
- Yes, regularly, and I like it.
- Yes, I read the newsletter. I think that it is useful with the information it provides, but I do not think that people are devoted enough to it to follow through with discussions that are mentioned in them. I'd like the newsletter to be read closely enough that if we need a pretty large community decision, enough attention can be attracted to the relevant discussion.
- Not really. I just glance over it.
- Yes. It's well-written, informative and efficient. My only complaint is with the table formatting which works fine in Firefox but messes up in IE.
- Yes. It's good. Maybe it should be made more frequent.
- I read it. good overview
- I read it. It's interesting to know what movies are coming out soon, but because I don't live in the US, the dates are usually wrong for me and some of the movies which are released 'soon' in the US won't come out for me until months later.
- Yes. I think it is usually relevant and informative
- Yes, it's quite interesting.
- Yes, I actually like waiting for them to see what's been done. I read the December issue before it was posted on the main project page.
- I have read a couple. They were OK, but not exceptional in any way.
- No. I have never seen one.
- As someone who likes films, I enjoy reading it, particularly the new film releases.
- Yes, it's ok.
- no, I think that there are only statistics.
- I usually glance at it once or twice... No seriously, I'd like more feedback from other editors on what they would like to see. The newsletter is now in its fourth year and I'd like to continue to work on it as long as possible. I've looked to other newsletters to find ways to improve this one, but I'm always seeking new ways of improving it.
- Usually
- Yes. It serves the purpose well.
11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films?
- Only to reiterate the need for an established policy on the use of IMDb, and to request a general, trickle-down tone from the Project leadership emphasizing the need for a higher level of sourcing and verifiability.
- As said, I'd like to see the Collaboration of the Week revived and it focusing on those 'important' films, not yet GA or higher.
- I think that most of the coordinators are fantastic, helpful editors and do a good job stewarding the project.
- Um, yeah. Everyone needs to get at least 5 articles to GA-status per month. No?
- I wish everyone all the best for the future and hopes the projet goes from stength to strength.
- Only that a great consistency is needed in "plot summary/synopsis" pages for films, both contemporary and less modern films. Some are complete scene-by-scene breakdowns (sometimes helpful, sometimes verbose) and others are a simple copy-paste of the back of a DVD cover.
- Reverse chronological order for filmographies, pleeaaase.
- Maybe do more to entice new members, especially with regards to the task forces. The project's new articles listing is a good place to find users who may be interested in joining. Perhaps also ensure that the task forces are properly integrated into related WikiProjects, to encourage more cross-project collaboration.
- Get that FilmBot up and running!!! We greatly need our own bot to perform monotonous tasks whether it be tagging, category and template adding, imdb link adding etc.
- Not at this time, but this questionnaire is a good idea.
- Keep up the good work churning out quality content. :) It might be good to organize some Featured topic drives, similar to WP:DOH/TOPIC, WP:AUS/GA, etc. This might be a nice way to get people motivated - set goals. X number of total GAs by a key date in film history (maybe by next Oscars event, Cannes festival, etc.) Themed-DYKs for certain film-heavy parts of the year - something like that.
- I'd like to thank the people who got it to where it is today. It's definitely a great way to concentrate the efforts of people who love film and want to help improve Wikipedia. Good job!
- Just that I've "met" a lot of good people. Thanks all.
- No, I think it's fine how it is, although I'd like to be a lot more active.
- I think that outreach is key to the growth of the WikiProject. For film articles, a lot of edits are very short-term, and I'd like to be more welcoming (and less formal) with editors that may be interested in a community effort. I also think that there could be some etiquette to encourage. We may have WP:CIVIL and WP:BITE and so forth, but it may be worth exploring more specifically what kind of tone to best adapt in discussions. Hopefully the result is that any new editors will feel less intimidated in participating in discussions and more comfortable in collaboration.
- You're doing a great job!
- Keep up the good work, I guess.
- Better organised and much more user-friendly than many other projects.
- Certainly a busy project that maintains one of our most popular categories of articles.
- I'd like to thank the people who got it to where it is today. It's definitely a great way to concentrate the efforts of people who love film and want to help improve Wikipedia.
- My impression is that compared to other WikiProjects I have experienced, WP Films is a very sensible one, that seems genuinely more interested in improving coverage of its subject than in playing politics - but as said already, I am rather distant from it.
Afterthought: WP Films' interpretation of the assessment guidelines seems to be more demanding than the general recommendations: what you require for a Start class article is more like what is required on the rest of Wikipedia for a C or even a B class - whatever your thinking behind this it certainly doesn't function as an encouragement to write film-related articles.
- I appreciate the concept, and will continue to follow your guidelines.
- We are doing a great job here. Wikipedia is the most comprehensive resource on films and film making on the Net.
- We should have a standard format for all film related articles.
- Nothing too much. I think films that have a "B" status or a Start-class status, would benefit being tagged with those check marks of what they are missing to be a B-class rating. Members of the group should try to use them more often.
- Do more to entice new members, especially with regards to the task forces.
- It needs more contents. I feel I could do some contribution but due to my lack of time I'm helpless.
- Well, a list of your wikiproject's reliable sources at the top of the wikiproject page would be nice. That's about it.
- I don't want to appear unduly negative about the project. In general, while I've been disappointed in some respects, I've also come to appreciate the willingness of the project's leaders to entertain novel ideas or to do their best to appreciate an argument which diverges from current dogma. This doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to keep me coming back. While I don't have a lot of experience with other Wikipedia projects, I suspect that WikiProject Films is, overall, somewhat less doctrinaire than is the norm.
In any case, my thanks to Erik to reaching out to encourage me to respond to this questionaire.
- I think, that lists of films, for example List of American films of 1940 and for example Japanese films of 1971 should be made by robots and should be improved according to informations in Film Infoboxes and/or accroding to categories. Such lists are important especially in Japanese cinema because Japanese film has 2 or 3 titles: 1) original Japanese title, 2) romanized title and 3) international (English) title. All 3 these titles should be in such lists to be able to easily find out every film.
- I've enjoyed working with this project, I believe it was the first one I joined. In the nearly three years I've been here, the majority of my edits have been with film articles including cleanup, assessment, article improvement, and behind-the-scenes work. I never thought that I would be getting articles to GA/FA quality or get elected as a coordinator. This project is still young, and I'd like to continue to help improve it to ensure the long-term success of the project on Wikipedia. It's great to work with so many knowledgeable people with a diverse background and interest in films. Keep up the good work and happy editing!
- My biggest issue was that I started ranking NZ films according to their importance in the context of NZ film, but had to stop when I realised that the importance ranking is project-wide rather than task-force specific. Thus the films ranked "top importance" are not always especially relavant to NZ film history, but a film that is very important to NZ cinema, e.g. Goodbye Pork Pie is not significant on a world scale. This is a technical issue that may not be solvable. In fact while checking Wikipedia:WikiProject_Films/New_Zealand_cinema_task_force in order to find exaples for this answer I see that importance columns have been removed from the task force summary. It would still be good to be able to rank importance within the taskforce scope though.

- Answer:
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- Answer: I'd personally like the Style Guidelines to be redone so that things that are not production are not necessarily subsumed into the "Production" category.
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?

5) Can you explain your level of participation, or lack thereof, on the community talk page?
- Answer: Most of the edits I've made haven't been controversial. Sometimes they are, particularly since I have a high standard for sourcing and a low tolerance for fancruft. In instances when collaboration and compromise can't be reached, I tend to seek help at the Admin Noticeboard or a Project's talk page.

7) In which departments and task forces are you involved, if any? If none, is there a reason why?

8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Answer: I do. Film fans can be highly passionate, like music fans, and tend not to have the research-oriented skepticism of, say, people writing about science, or who come from a professional journalistic background.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- Answer: More admin intervention, and -- more than anything -- the establishment of a set policy regarding IMDb, which is great as a source of leads, but which is a quasi-wiki and filled with errors, including in cast and credit lists.
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- Answer: I'm afraid I haven't seen it.
11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films?
- Answer: Only to reiterate the need for an established policy on the use of IMDb, and to request a general, trickle-down tone from the Project leadership emphasizing the need for a higher level of sourcing and verifiability.

7) In which departments and task forces are you involved, if any? If none, is there a reason why?
- Answer: I am involved with no projects or task forces other than tangential involvement with WP:LGBT (I don't consider myself a member). Despite the founding principles of the project I don't believe from many past collective activities that the consensus model works, so I just try to stay out of other peoples' ways in doing my edits and hope that hey stay out of mine. - Yes: Take a look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bomma Borusa. I almost quit Wikipedia during this conversation.

- Only that a great consistency is needed in "plot summary/synopsis" pages for films, both contemporary and less modern films. Some are complete scene-by-scene breakdowns (sometimes helpful, sometimes verbose) and others are a simple copy-paste of the back of a DVD cover.

7) In which departments and task forces are you involved, if any? If none, is there a reason why?
- Answer:Italian, French and Bollywood mostly although I've long wanted a Hong Kong cinema and Latin American cinema task force.
8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Answer: Yes which is why I am no longer a member of the group.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- Answer: Take itself less seriously definately.
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- Answer: Yes I glance at it occasionally. I think its great and the distributors might I say do an excellent job with it.
11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films?
- Answer: Get that FilmBot up and running!!! We greatly need our own bot to perform monotonous tasks whether it be tagging, category and template adding, imdb link adding etc.

8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.

10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- Answer: Yes - a useful update to what is happening. Maybe have a focus on a sub-project for a month - say next months n/l could look at cinema of Spain, for example.

- Answer: None, as there simply are not any I really need to join.
8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Answer: Yes, you can feel a bit alienated when first joining a large WikiProject and not know exactly what to do to improve articles. Dealing with disruptive users and conflicts can also be stressful.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- Answer: More support in getting some articles to FA would be great, for example The Lion King. Perhaps the creation of a Disney film task force might help. Ultimately, I just need more free time!
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- Answer: Yes, it is quite good. I would like a section each month giving tips on how to improve film articles, which would make it more interesting.

5) Can you explain your level of participation, or lack thereof, on the community talk page?
- Answer: I spend the bulk of my time on anime/manga articles, mostly working on a handful of Sci-Fi channel type B-natural disaster films. Attempts to work on bigger articles, like Disney films, but found it was too frustrating to not see results and not feel there was any interest within the project to help enhance what should be some of the best articles nor to work to protect them from rampant vandalism.

- Answer: there are no task forces that interest me at this time
8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Answer: Sometimes, if working on an article and not finding the support needed from the project to bring it to good shape. Really, the hardest challenge is sources, of course, particularly for older or less popular films. It wouldn't hurt if the Films project had a reference library similar to the Anime/manga project's, were members with various film books could list what they have and be available to check for sourcing for films within those books.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- Answer: Find me more time :-P Stronger project support to back its members when they undertake a film article clean up and face "fan" opposition
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?

7) In which departments and task forces are you involved, if any? If none, is there a reason why?

8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Answer: Nope, just busy with other projects in addition to improving quality content on a bunch of film-related articles.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- Answer: It's organized pretty well already, I like the newsletter and structural setup. Perhaps would be a good idea to have a subpage with some links and tips to common places for research and resources for various subsections of film articles. Good sources for production info, reception, casting, etc.
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- Answer: I do read the newsletter and I appreciate it - I use it to keep up to date on new featured content and update Portal:Film accordingly.
11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films?
- Answer: Keep up the good work churning out quality content. - Answer: I'm not sure. :)
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- Answer: I skim-read it. It's good source of what movies are coming out soon, but because I don't live in the US, the dates are usually wrong for me and some of the movies which are released 'soon' in the US won't come out for me until months later. :) Oh, well.
11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films?
- Answer: I'd like to thank the people who got it to where it is today. It's definitely a great way to concentrate the efforts of people who love film and want to help improve Wikipedia. Good job! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Moment Deuterium (talk • contribs)

5) Can you explain your level of participation, or lack thereof, on the community talk page?
- Answer: I don't often contribute to the talk page the way I tend to in Summer because during the school year (September–June-ish) I am more busy with exams and testing, and thus focus more on minor edits and adoption on Wikipedia than WikiProjects.

7) In which departments and task forces are you involved, if any? If none, is there a reason why?
- Answer: I used to be a regular contributor to review and assessment. My focus is now mainly on copyediting of film articles, rather than any specialised department.
8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Answer: Not at all. It is lack of time that hinders my involvement.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- Answer: Few things come to mind, besides notifying members more often of community functions and events, which I rarely receive notice of.
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- Answer: Yes, regularly, and I like it.

5) Can you explain your level of participation, or lack thereof, on the community talk page?
- Answer: I participate fairly frequently on the community talk page because I want there to be a sense of community. I want editors to know that they can visit the talk page to discuss topics related to film articles on Wikipedia and also find editors who can provide independent assessments of a given situation. I try to respond to topics where I feel that my input could be useful.
6) I participate regularly in the WikiProject's departments and task forces. (please bold your response)
- Disagree
- Somewhat disagree
- Somewhat agree

7) In which departments and task forces are you involved, if any? If none, is there a reason why?
- Answer: I primarily participate in the future films department since I tend to edit articles about upcoming films.
8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Answer: No, from my perspective, I do not find participation difficult. I am not sure if other perspectives are similar. Some editors seem averse to participation because of a perceived hierarchy (with the existence of coordinators) or because not all discussions have the best comfort level.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- Answer: I think that greater participation by a larger number of editors would be more appealing, especially when working together in task forces.
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- Answer: Yes, I read the newsletter. I think that it is useful with the information it provides, but I do not think that people are devoted enough to it to follow through with discussions that are mentioned in them. I'd like the newsletter to be read closely enough that if we need a pretty large community decision, enough attention can be attracted to the relevant discussion.
11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films?
- Answer: I think that outreach is key to the growth of the WikiProject.

German cinema taskforce - but only because of the language; I am actually only interested in Austrian films, and seldom go near any other sort of film-related articles
8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.

Not sure that I participate in the project in any meaningful way, except by writing articles on Austrian films, but don't see why there should be any difficulty if I did want to participate more - it seems like a well-run project

Yes. I think it is usually relevant and informative
11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films?
- Answer:
My impression is that compared to other WikiProjects I have experienced, WP Films is a very sensible one, that seems genuinely more interested in improving coverage of its subject than in playing politics - but as said already, I am rather distant from it.
7) In which departments and task forces are you involved, if any? If none, is there a reason why?
- Answer: I rutinely make changes / improvements to film articles.
8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Answer: As mentioned above, I work on film articles when I can, and much of the editing I do is what the project aims to do. It's what I'm interested in, so no, I don't find that difficult. However, I don't really feel included in the project as such. That said, if being included in the project meant being given specific tasks to do, I would have no interest in that - I'm not getting paid for this, after all.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- Answer: I'll just carry on as I am.

- Answer: Not that much, I understand how to use infobox, fair use images and the basic structure of articles. I find it easy to find information through reliable new sources on the web and from google book and news search.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?

- Answer: Nothing too much. I think films that have a "B" status or a Start-class status, would benefit being tagged with those check marks of what they are missing to be a B-class rating. Members of the group should try to use them more often. Andrzejbanas (talk) 17:49, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

- Answer: Yes - at present as I am only interested in a small select group of films such as some classic Westerns & Spaghetti Westerns, the 50+ Stephen Chow films and the odd other film I may edit the article of as when I have seen a film I normally go to see what Wikiworld has to say about it

1) I consider myself an active member of WikiProject Films.
- Agree - a de facto member
2) I am satisfied with how WikiProject Films is currently set up.
- Agree - I have no problem with the Project's structure
3) I edit articles related to film more than other topics on Wikipedia.
- Agree - Along with actor and director articles, yes
4) I participate regularly on the community talk page for WikiProject Films.
- Somewhat agree - with sporadic regularity (if such a thing is possible)
5) Can you explain your level of participation, or lack thereof, on the community talk page?
- Answer: I participate when subjects come to my attention, or when problems arise that I need assistance with.
6) I participate regularly in the WikiProject's departments and task forces. (please bold your response)
- Disagree - I don't believe I've ever participated in a specific department or task force activity. If I did, it was because I was attracted to the topic independently.
7) In which departments and task forces are you involved, if any? If none, is there a reason why?
- Answer: - I prefer to edit as subjects arise, or on projects that I set myself to do.
8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Answer: - I see no systemic obstacles to participation, just the peculiarities (and deficits) of my own personality.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- Answer: - In general, I find that the activities of the project are too focused on systematizing the formatting and content of articles, to the detriment of the potential value of individual contributions and the possibility of novel solutions to specific problems being superior to standardized procedures as detailed in project guidelines.
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- Answer: - No.
11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films?
- Answer: - I don't want to appear unduly negative about the project.

10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter? Answer: no, I think that there are only statistics.
11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films? Answer: I think, that lists of films, for example List of American films of 1940 and for example Japanese films of 1971 should be made by robots and should be improved according to informations in Film Infoboxes and/or accroding to categories. Such lists are important especially in Japanese cinema because Japanese film has 2 or 3 titles: 1) original Japanese title, 2) romanized title and 3) international (English) title. All 3 these titles should be in such lists to be able to easily find out every film.

5) Can you explain your level of participation, or lack thereof, on the community talk page?
- I will try to join in on community-wide discussions or ones that interest me. I have started numerous discussions as well.
6) I participate regularly in the WikiProject's departments and task forces.
- Agree
7) In which departments and task forces are you involved, if any? If none, is there a reason why?
- I contribute to the Assessment, Outreach, Spotlight, and now, the new Resources department. I have joined the American cinema task force, but have been working on American films since first joining the project.
8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- At times it is frustrating to see how more members don't contribute to discussions/elections. For such a large member project, I figure we'd have more feedback in discussions that impact thousands of articles and the future of the project.
9) What can be done with WikiProject Films to help you participate more in its activities?
- If this turned into a paid position, I'd devote as much time as possible! But since that won't be happening soon, there isn't too much more that can be done.
10) Do you read the WikiProject Films monthly newsletter? If yes, what is your opinion of the newsletter?
- I usually glance at it once or twice... No seriously, I'd like more feedback from other editors on what they would like to see. The newsletter is now in its fourth year and I'd like to continue to work on it as long as possible. I've looked to other newsletters to find ways to improve this one, but I'm always seeking new ways of improving it.
11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films?
- I've enjoyed working with this project, I believe it was the first one I joined. In the nearly three years I've been here, the majority of my edits have been with film articles including cleanup, assessment, article improvement, and behind-the-scenes work. I never thought that I would be getting articles to GA/FA quality or get elected as a coordinator. This project is still young, and I'd like to continue to help improve it to ensure the long-term success of the project on Wikipedia. It's great to work with so many knowledgeable people with a diverse background and interest in films. Keep up the good work and happy editing!

8) Do you find it difficult to participate in WikiProject Films? If yes, please explain why.
- Answer: Templates for external databases like {{imdb}}, {{discogs}} or {{allmusic}} are not harmonized. It's real pain in the ass if you need 30 minutes to find out how to use a certain template. That will distract most non-regular editors.

11) Are there any other thoughts that you would like to share about WikiProject Films?
- Answer: My biggest issue was that I started ranking NZ films according to their importance in the context of NZ film, but had to stop when I realised that the importance ranking is project-wide rather than task-force specific.
- Secondly, I would like to see the project have more responsibility for filmmaker biographies. Just because it also falls within the scope of WP:BIO does not mean they have exclusive rights to it.
