What is the reason for the white blank line above the table?Curb Chain (talk) 00:18, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There's some code in the template that will add a heading for the table if you want, however if no heading is provided, it leaves a blank line behind. — Bility (talk) 00:28, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I am not as skilled in wikimarkup as other others, so my question is would it be possible to not leave a blank space behind? And if so, could this be done? Thanks in advance.Curb Chain (talk) 00:30, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, fixed it, I think. — Bility (talk) 00:45, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but I cannot provide "expert opinion". Could you tell me what this did?Curb Chain (talk) 01:35, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It just provides a little space between the table and any elements above it so they don't look like they're running together. In the example to the right, the second table doesn't use any margin and the third one does. — Bility (talk) 02:45, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-lock

edit

On some articles, there is a semi-lock which allows only Wikipedians with accounts to edit that article. Why is that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 161.130.178.79 (talk) 04:07, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at WP:SILVERLOCK and see if that answers your question. --NeilN talk to me 04:11, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Some articles on Wikipedia are more prone to vandalism than others. It seems a lot of vandalism is from anonymous users (those editors where we just see their IP address), so a way to reduce the likelihood of vandalism is to all only registered users to edit Wikipedia. So to edit a semi-protected page, you have to create an account. -Compdude123 (talk) 04:16, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Should you choose, for whatever reason, not to create an account, you can still request an edit on the talk page of any article that is protected. Joefromrandb (talk) 05:00, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

RFK letter

edit

See p. 89 of this pdf (89 is the page number, but it's p. 36 of 61 in my adobe viewer). Can someone make a file out of the letter from RFK to Gene Schoor? I want to add it to the Schoor article. (I've downloaded the pdf, which is from an auction house, and it is virus-free.)

www.rrauction.com/content/pdf/311pdf/notables.pdf 63.17.45.70 (talk) 04:15, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean lifting/copying the letter itself, I'm not sure that's a wise idea. Copyright can be iffy sometimes, and it doesn't seem 100% clear-cut here. I think you best bet would be to add in a sentence (example: "Kennedy gives thanks to Schoor for books.") Then add this file as a reference, using a tag like this:
<ref name=RRAuction>{{Citation|title=Kennedy thanks Gene Schoor for a home run of a gift|url=http://www.rrauction.com/content/pdf/311pdf/notables.pdf|author=RRAuction|journal=Notables & Notorious|pages=89|accessdate=2011-05-04}}</ref>
The results would look like:

{{User:Avicennasis/sandbox9}}

Hope that helps. :) (I didn't check your contribution history prior to writing this, so forgive me if you already know about ref formatting.) Avicennasis @ 06:33, 30 Nisan 5771 / 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Questions on Economics

edit

i m a student of economics.. if i post some queries on economics to Wikipedia wl i get my answers??Anupriya Datta (talk) 06:08, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If it has to do with crunching numbers, you're best bet would be the Mathematics reference desk. If it is more about Economic theories, you may want to try the Humanities reference desk. Hope that helps. Avicennasis @ 06:16, 30 Nisan 5771 / 4 May 2011 (UTC)
Note, the reference desk will not do homework for you (ie, if you merely state the question) - If your question is homework, show that you have attempted an answer first, and we will try to help you past the stuck point.
But yes...you do want the reference desk, not this help desk. Good luck,  Chzz  ►  06:54, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Overlinking - tool?

edit

Does anyone know of a tool that could show me how many times words are wikilinked within an article, excluding references? I know I could just use CTRL+F but that's not practical for large articles with many words linked. Cheers, doomgaze (talk) 10:57, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe WP:AWB could be set to do this. Dismas|(talk) 12:32, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) f you use Google Chrome ctrl+F tells you how many times the word is found. :) CTJF83 12:33, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a Mac user so AWB isn't an option I'm afraid. Haha I know about the Chrome function, but I'm referring to situations where articles have ~100 words wikilinked, so going through them all manually would be super tedious. doomgaze (talk) 12:46, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm predominantly a Mac user as well but most editors run Windows, so I took a shot in the dark... Sorry... Dismas|(talk) 12:50, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Are you just wanting to know the number of links, or do you want to unlink them all?...Get a PC and use AWB? CTJF83 12:55, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hey no worries, thanks for trying. What I'm (ideally) looking for is something that could scan the article and display, say:
Marsupial - linked 7 times here, here, here, here, here, here and here.
Communism in Albania - linked 5 times here, here, here, here and here.
Paris Hilton's Sex Video Tape - linked 3 times here, here and here.
and so on and so on. Or even just the number of times linked, and then I could manually review the most common links with CTRL+F (well, CMD+F for me). Something that could show me some results like that would be helpful with reviewing articles to make sure they conform with the MoS, specifically with the policy on repeating links. doomgaze (talk) 13:12, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wasn't there any toolserver-tool that serves your needs? mabdul 17:31, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not so far as I can see. I'd hoped the peer reviewer would have such a function, but alas. doomgaze (talk) 21:10, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Does this license like here, allow for "commercial reuse with modification"? I'm wondering, cause I always look for images to use on a Google search, and the image linked in the last sentence, doesn't come up on a Google search. If it is a Google issue, what can I use to better search for free images we can use on here? CTJF83 12:28, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The license does allow for "commercial reuse with modification". As for where to search I use the library of congress a fair bit or search in flickr. Although mostly I take pics myself.©Geni 02:11, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How to create red link?

edit

During the past few days, I've been working on Merchant Prince to fix the major issues in the article. The article was originally named "Merchant Prince (series)", but since it described only the first game in detail, I moved it under the current name. Now I'm trying to redlink Merchant Prince II because it doesn't have but in my opinion should have an article, and having not played the game I don't think I'm up to the challenge. The problem is, the link comes up as blue, since Merchant Prince II redirects to the article which was in name only about the series. I'm sorry if this is too confusing. Zakhalesh (talk) 16:21, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you're trying to edit the page titled "Merchant Prince II", you'll need to edit this page. Merchant Prince II is currently a redirect pointing to the main series page. I don't think there's a reason to remove the redirect entirely. Why do you think the redirect needs to be removed? TNXMan 16:32, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I don't think the redirect needs to be "removed" in the sense of Merchant Prince II pointing to nothing. I mean that an article should be created about it, and a redirect may confuse editors as the target page is, apart from a few words about MPII, about MPI. Zakhalesh (talk) 16:43, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have nominated Merchant Prince II for deletion as a misleading redirect; see the Rfd section. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:01, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

notability guideline for music.

edit

Hi, I am trying to edit the article "Danny Bryant". It says at the top of the page The topic of this article may not meet the notability guideline for music.. I have read the guidelines and as far as i can see the subject is definitely notable. I am a fan and have set up an account in order to specifically edit this article. I fully understand the need for neutralism etc. but the is much factual information missing here. I do not want to waste time editing if the article may be deleted. I am a total newbie, any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sikeder (talkcontribs) 17:09, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you can indicate which of the 12 criteria listed at WP:BAND he meets, & give appropriate references, then the tag can be removed. - David Biddulph (talk) 17:21, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My question is: Do you have a picture of the boat called "The Flounder". I would love to see a picture. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.163.30.127 (talk) 17:38, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you are asking about adding a screenshot of the boat to Doctor Dolittle (film), we couldn't do that because it would probably be a copyright violation. —teb728 t c 19:29, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Info Box

edit

I trying to put the revised opening dates for the article 'Windseeker'. I tried putting it in but won't show up when I preview it. Is there any value to putting a revised date or anything close that I could use? Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dom497 (talkcontribs) 20:12, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your May 3 edit worked. Just change the part after the corresponding parameter name. Do not change or add parameter names unless {{Infobox attraction}} shows support for that parameter name. If you still have problems then save your edit (and revert if it leaves the article in a broken state) so we can see what you are doing. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:00, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is My Page Ready?

edit

I am working on the page "Troop 799 (Richmond, Virginia)" and want to know if it is eligible to make it as that oage and not just a user page like it is now. If possible could you tell me what I need to publish it and not have it deleted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Helpfuleditor2/Troop_799_(Richmond,_Virginia) Helpfuleditor2 (talk) 21:38, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to meet WP:GNG requirements. See also WP:CLUB. You would need to add third party reliable sources to indicate why this specific troop is notable enough for a page on Wikipedia. CTJF83 21:44, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Under Henrico County Public Schools, there is a link to "Tuckahoe Middle School" but when clicked on it just goes right to Henrico County Public Schools wikipedia. I was wondering what I could do to be able to edit it and if it was a problem you guys are able to fix it. Helpfuleditor2 (talk) 21:42, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately middle and elementary schools don't meet the WP:GNG requirements for an article, so they are redirected to the relevant school district or city/county article. Past predictions of the future

edit

Given we have articles such as Timeline of the future in forecasts and List of predictions, it would seem logical for us to have an article (or articles) on past predictions of the future, and I have a vague memory of reading such an article. However I simply cannot find any reference to it existing or having existed - do we have an article that I just can't find, or am I misremembering things?
