How to quote an interview

Is there a specific template for quoting a dialogue, like an interview wherein the questions being asked need to be quoted word-for-word? Or should I just use {{blockquote}} and wing it? CityOfSilver 00:04, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

{{dialogue}}, perhaps? Seems to be more intended towards character dialogues than interviews, but if your dialogue is less than 10 lines, it could do. Otherwise blockquote seems like the way to go, I'm not aware of any other template. Oh, and you probably already know this, but beware fair use (e.g. a 400+ word Q&A would probably be inappropriate). Are the Wikipedians really serious about Userboxitis?

Are the Wikipedians really serious about Userboxitis? Or is this just a joke disease like "cooties"? Why is having Userboxitis a bad thing? Can it be completely cured, or are the victims forever obsessed with Userboxes, and there is no known cure for this disease? Do I have Userboxitis? meta/color ???

For background, please see Lord Fusituʻa/meta/color and User talk:TexasAndroid#Meta/color. I came across this while Short Pages patrolling. And deleted it. It's been protested and recreated. I'm 99% certain that, whatever the user is trying to do, it does not belong in article space like this. But are they trying to do something better done via a template, or is there actually some way to set meta attributes on pages, as s/he appears to be trying to do? - TexasAndroid (talk) 02:13, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well one thing is for sure, even if the main space supported subpages (e.g. linked from the article using {{/meta/color}}), this specific one doesn't really make any sense as the Lord Fusituʻa article doesn't exist and the template is used on the constituency article. If anything it belongs to the template namespace, like all templates used in articles (including other /meta/color templates). The fact that it showed up on Special:ShortPages, and your answer is quite right on your talk page, is exactly why this sort of thing doesn't belong in the article space. Missing data: nowhere does it mention he was in the James Bond spoof "Casino Royale" (1967) with David Niven, Ursula Andress, Orson Welles and Woody Allen. He got the top billing on the DVD that I own. I enjoyed him in that part, among his many others and think it should at least be mentioned.

I don't want to sign in, or create an account. I just use Wikipedia but don't want to sign-up, sign-on . . .or sign-in.

When I was reading about Zebra I read this under "STRIPES"

Yes, it seems to have been fixed already. Thanks for pointing this out though. Typical vandalism, but reverted. You don't need to sign in to edit most articles, so you could have fixed it yourself - we always welcome assistance from anonymous contributors, especially when assisting with dealing with idiots like this vandal. Sadly, this seems to have taken an hour to spot, which isn't good - though it is probably an indication that the article isn't being looked at that much. We have 'bots' which are programmed to spot obvious vandalism, and I'm surprised this one wasn't detected. AndyTheGrump (talk) 05:04, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Small update: ClueBot NG usually picks up that type of vandalism, but the version prior to that was by ClueBot itself, because it removed some other vandalism. ClueBot NG won't revert to a version that was written by itself. Also, normally it would have been picked up by the "edit filter", but that skipped it because the article already contained the word "asses" (as in, donkeys) - and the filter is less strict when an article already contains words that might be considered profane. It might be that this is one of the few cases that automatic tools missed for valid reasons; still, the various tools are constantly being improved. Chzz  ►  14:32, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Automatically generate list of all pages a user has edited and extract coords, if any

Hello, I have a somewhat strange and technical question. I'd like to be able to automatically (or semi-automatically) create a list of all the article pages I've ever edited and extract each page's coordinates (the {{coord}} template at least, and ideally coordinates in geoboxes), if a page has coordinates. The idea is to map the coordinates with an application like Google Maps. I tend to edit geographic articles and am curious to see the distribution over my years here. I'm also thinking of making a map like this, if it isn't too hard, for a friend who quit Wikipedia some time ago but had amassed at least 70,000 edits, a great many of which were geographic and focused on British Columbia. I was thinking it would be a nice "memorial" for his work--a way to say thanks for all that! Obviously I would get his permission and participation in gathering the list and coords--I assume I would need to. So my question is--is this possible? If so, ideas on how to do it? Would it be relatively easy or technically challenging? I have some background with geographic data manipulation, so given a list of coords I should be able to make a map. I just don't know how I'd generate such a list. I know there are lots of tools over at toolserver.org, but I haven't spent a lot of time over there. Clues? Thanks. Unified account conflicts

What is the correct procedure for dealing with name conflicts in unified accounts? I am trying to make my account universal, but there appears be a user with my name on the Chinese wiki, at http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:LWG. Unfortunately I can't read Chinese, so I have no idea how to determine whether this account is an active contributor, or how to get it renamed/usurped if it isn't. -- LWG talk 11:13, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your donation form does not work. I live in Panama and want to make a donation with Visa. I fill in my name, address. We have no zip codes in Panama. I believe the absence of entering a zip code, is preventing the process to proceed further without error message. If 'Panama' is entered, then a zip code box should be made to disappear, or there should be some indication that lack of zip code entry is not the culprit in preventing the process to proceed. You aren't alone. I attempt to send money through internet to other websites. At times my efforts are thwarted by a requirement that I fill in a zip code. The sites don't realize that many countries are without zip codes. There is no mail delivery in Panama, nor do the majority of homes have any address number posted! But we have the internet!

Curb stomp

Our "Curb stomp" article page has been deleted a couple of times but now that a reasonable article on the topic exists at Curb-stomp, I would like Curb stomp to redirect to Curb-stomp. It's because it has been protected from re-creation (after all the deletions). However, the article Curb-stomp looks quite tenuous; it has no references at all, and may not meet the general notability guidelines - (I imagine you're familiar with the basic idea). Also, maybe helpful in this case is Wikipedia:POPCULTURE.
It'd be possible to ask an admin to make a redirect, but at the moment, I'm not convinced it's a good idea; the article is in danger of deletion. Please try to add references to reliable sources.  Chzz  ►  17:05, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

dear wikipedia colleagues,

recently, i wrote a new wikipedia entry about a company. i researched the piece carefully. i cited numerous sources. i wrote it in a decidedly neutral manner (which, between the lines, was in fact quite "critical" if criticism encompasses implications of a company's performance).

to my great surprise, an editor slapped a "Speedy deletion" note on the entry. then, a second editor changed the "Speedy deletion" recommendation to "take to afd." (i have no idea what "afd" is, but hardly sounds better.)

i am in process of replying to both editors -- but i'm tired of slipshod efforts by editors (of which, in fact, i am one).

clearly, the initial editor did not read the article with any care. s/he accused the entry of "unambiguous advertising," a conclusion only a careless reader could reach. even if the editor/s stand down, wikipedia needs to encourage excellence at all times -- and discourage needless exchanges like the one i'm being pulled into.

please advise soonest what course/s of action i may take to have this issue addressed "higher up" in wikipedia.

Just to clarify, in case you didn't already figure it out, "AfD" stands for "Articles for Deletion". It is less severe than speedy delete: AfD means that someone thinks it might be wise to delete the article and wishes to open a discussion on whether to do so, while speedy delete is for articles that are considered obviously and unarguably useless, such that it does not need to be discussed whether to delete it. -- LWG talk 04:33, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Aboudaqn, the speedy tagger was incorrect with the speedy nomination, get over it.   1. When using {{cite news}}'s |publisher= and |agency= parameters, should I only link a news agency's name the first time if it is used multiple times in the citations for the article, or should I link it for all the citations it is used in?

  3. Should I link the author in every {{cite web}} if they are the same author, or only the first one?
  4. Should accessdates be used for {{cite journal}}?

All details about a particular source should be complete. The ordering of references and what references appear is not permanent after all. If you only keep all the extra details on one ref, if it is replaced, superseded, or pushed out of the original order, you lose information. John Doe (1990) should be as complete as the details in John Doe (1992), no matter if they were published by the same author, on the same journal, on the same page, (even on the same date), etc. if they are two separate papers/sources, you must not lump them together. However, if you are reusing the same refs all over again, see WP:NAMEDREFS.

Specifically on interwiki links in references, I don't see a problem with multiple links. A website run by ecat.com supposedly involved with the Energy Catalyzer an alleged commercial cold fusion power source (yeah, right...) has acknowledged that it has sourced material from Wikipedia: "Some content was originally published at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_fusion". Am I right in thinking that this is a violation of Wikipedia contributors copyrights, in that it doesn't make clear which material this is, and doesn't make the material available on the same terms as the GFDL etc? I haven't checked whether they copied any content from Wikipedia 1:1, but if they did I think this would be a violation of Wikipedia's licensing terms, as I don't think their disclaimer at [4] is compatible with our license. Violations for Cold fusion and Energy Catalizer. The boldface is not everything as several instances of whole sentences are copied as is or closely paraphrased. ECAT is indeed in violation of the Wikipedia licensing terms, because while they attribute to Wikipedia (incorrect attribution, they should attribute to Wikipedia contributors and link the history of the article), they do not share-alike. A friendly e-mail could be sent to them asking for compliance with either the CC-BY-SA or the GFDL; if they do not comply, the copyright holders of the work, e.g. the editors of the relevant articles (and especially of the relevant material), could send a DMCA takedown notice and/or take further actions at their discretion. A bit more than reasonable, 10 business days would do. There is however not much else we can do if they do not comply, save for the contributors whose copyright are infringed to take some form of action (e.g. formal notice, DMCA takedown notice, etc). Searches: How to make search of plural go to same place as search of singular

Putting red light camera into the search box gets you an article entitled Red Light Cameras. Good!

But putting red light cameras (the plural) into the search box gets you a different article not specifically about red light cameras.

Is there a way to make the plural get readers the same article as the singular?

can the page be expanded so the left hand column shrinks?

Is it possible to expand the portion of content so the entire page is utilized? One possibility may involve shrinking the left 30% of the page which seems to be a dedicated column. It is unclear why this column exists and makes the reading of content on wiki pages more challenging and less rewarding.

Is there a reason the column is included? Is it formatted to allow for advertising? Can my request be implemented?
