Redirect page reconverted into article

Heya, was looking for a little guidance on this redirect: Neon Knome. Several weeks back I nominated the article for deletion because it was entirely original research, poorly written, contained trivia, and any notable information it did impart could easily be incorporated into the parent article at: The Problem Solverz. The AfD passed and the article was turned into a redirect to the parent article. Shortly thereafter, an editor at IP 173.11.226.201 restored the disputed page (with glaring flaws and all) with no explanation. I reverted that edit and made it a redirect again. The IP user restored the article a second time. Another user turned it back into a redirect. Then an IP editor at 50.8.27.98 (who I believe to either be the same editor, or working in tandem with them, based on how closely their biases and edit histories intersect) restored the flawed article. I just want to be sure that my efforts to keep the redirect aren't misguided. I believe these IP editors are fans of the show and seem to have a heavy bias to keep any and all information about the show and its creators, rather than to ensure the quality of the articles. If there was consensus to delete and redirect the article, then shouldn't the anons be warned for edits that violate consensus, as well as having the article page-protected? Robert McClenon (talk) 00:54, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

This is where I get a little confused about consensus. I nominated the page for deletion because it didn't meet encyclopedic standards. Nobody objected. Is that consensus? But then two editors (theoretically) at these IPs want to restore the junk article. Is that consensus? Cyphoidbomb (talk) 03:17, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

On further checking, IP address 173.11.226.201 has a LONG history of disruptive edits and has repeatedly been warned and sometimes blocked. I've requested administrator intervention. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:46, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the assist. I piggybacked a mention of 50.8.27.98's activities onto the AIV report. Among other unhelpful contributions, here they are submitting the same copypasta--first one IP does, then after I reverted it for unsourced original research, the other IP resubmitted it. Example from 173.11.226.201 and example from 50.8.27.98. The edit was eventually reverted by another editor. Per RudolfoRed's suggestion, I submitted a request for page protection. New articles and submission for entries

Hi,

I am doing a project for a grad Public History class and we need to create a wiki article for a site that doesn't have one yet. I chose the Cockayne Farm Preservation Project. I used sandbox to do most of the writing/coding then submitted it to somewhere(?) Then it said about putting it on something called talk and then talk:articlesofcreation for Cockayne Farm Preservation Project. After doing this, I found another part that let me put my writing/coding in and the page appears to be active. My question is, did I just do a bunch of things wrong, or did I make my (and the editors) lives more complicated?

Your article is at Cockayne Farm Preservation Project. I didn't read it through but I see that there is still some work to be done to it. First, we don't generally put external links (those going to off-Wikipedia web sites) in the text of the article. Those are generally put in an external links section at the bottom. Second, articles don't have "Conclusion" sections. Articles aren't term papers where you have to sum up your arguments. Articles should be devoid of personal opinion. See WP:NPOV about that. The article is Indosat. The best place to discuss your problem is on the article's talk page. You say "We have been updating it frequently", but User:Pras2312 has never edited the page at all. Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Edit statistics on ice hockey player wiki page

I am interested in updating my personal Wiki page that has been created for me. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_Leeb)

I would like the page to represent my current ice hockey statistics, as the current Career Statistics have not been updated since 2008-2009. I do not know how to update this section. I see that the stats are from HockeyDB.com, but I can't figure out a simple way to update/copy paste code to update my this section.

Can someone please help? Or please update for me?

Any info is appreciated.

Template Help

I am finding dozens and dozens of pages of templates but not a general page that explains how to work with templates, what they are, when they should be used, how to use the code, where to put it. When I look at Template:Help, it's a template for a Help page, not a page trying to help people work with templates. I just need to know how to use one specific template in order to do a category deletion request but it's not a simple tag I can paste in, it's a template and they seem much more complicated. There should be a guide explaining what they are, why they are used and how to choose the right template from the hundreds listed in the category Templates. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 14:34, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Upload this file but is greyed out even though I've filled in all of the required data. How do I fix this?

I think the problem is that your account is too new. New accounts can upload freely-licensed images to Wikimedia Commons, but cannot upload "fair use" images - see WP:AUTOCONFIRM. Give me a few minutes and I'll see if I can do it for you. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:08, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Help:CS1_errors#Unknown parameter |????= ignored

Quite recently {{cite encyclopedia}} has had this test enabled: Help:CS1 errors#Unknown parameter#|????= ignored the trouble is that it has introduced a problem in dozens of wrapper templates that call {{cite encyclopedia}}. For example {{cite EB1911}} which is transluded into about 15,000 articles.

The problem is that to protect the wrapper template from setting null value parameters that for example break things like author=name when an empty last= parameter is also passed into {{cite encyclopedia}}. The code for passing in parameters in wrapper templates like {{cite EB1911}} is

|{{#if:{{{last|}}} |last |HIDE_PARAMETER}}={{{last|}}}

|{{#if:{{{author |}}} |author |HIDE_PARAMETER}}={{{author|}}}

This means that a hidden parameter is deliberately set to protect a valid parameter being set with an empty value. Now there are several ways this can be fixed easily, but while it is discussed it would probably be a good idea to roll back the alteration to CS1 errors which has made this error appear in tens of 1000s of pages.

If it is being used to not inject a blank field, then it is no longer needed with the Lua module. All you need is:

|{{{last}}}={{{last|}}}

Can you point to any examples where you see this error message with that template? I don't see why it should ever occur. Unknown parameters are ignored if their content is empty, which seems to be the case for the usage shown. According to the CatScan tool there are only 119 pages using {{Cite EB1911}} in Category:Pages with citations using unsupported parameters, and a quick perusal of the first 10 seemed to confirm that these were coincidental. The CS1 error was being reported by some other citation on the same page and not related to the use of {{Cite EB1911}}. Dragons flight (talk) 15:15, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

As in

I'll check the code and see if it is set to anything other than empty.

I was wondering whether anybody could help me produce this? I feel ethically bound to make it, yet I do not speak French, and most of the sources are French.

If the works' titles were in French, you should use those French-language titles. Translating them would be confusing, and make the sources harder to find. Incidentally — your article looks very good, far better than most editors' first articles. Maproom (talk) 15:25, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Because it was done as a copy/paste move the AfC Project template has not been placed on the Talk page - this needs to be fixed. Recently, we have tried to make changes to his wikipedia page, but the changes are always vetoed by other users. Is there a way to solidify and protect the pages of public figures, so that the information is correct and cannot be altered?

There is no way to prevent people from editing an article provided they have reliable sources to back up their edits. If you discuss desired changes on the associated talk page, and provide reliable published source, you may be able to convince the other editors of your proposed changes. Since this is a BLP (Biography of a Living Person) unsourced material will be immediately removed if challenged. Please be cautious in making changes to this article since you are seen as having a conflict of interest. RJFJR (talk) 19:48, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

First, you should familiarize yourself with Wikipedia guidelines at WP: Biographies of living persons. Then as RJFJR suggests, you can discuss changes on the talkpage of the article you are concerned about. Making a work-in-progress copy of a page

Is it permissible to make a copy of an article to my userspace to work on it and then merge it back into the main article after I'm done? I'm wanting to work on expanding an existing (stub) article, but I'm not wanting to leave the mainspace article in a half finished state while I work. Making a copy in userspace is fine. I'm not sure there is any particular procedure to follow. (You may want to put a message at the top of your userspace copy describing what you are doing in case someone finds it. You may also want to remove maintenance tags from your copy since they may add it to categories.) Ask to have your user copy deleted when you are done. RJFJR (talk) 19:44, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

damaged article on Pete Hautman

I am the author Pete Hautman, the subject of the Wikipedia article on "Pete Hautman" Pete Hautman. Recently, the (formerly accurate) article was heavily edited, and there are now several problems with it including

1) It says I have written some books that I did not write. (i.e. I am not the author of "The Walking Dead!") 2) Nearly all of the publication dates of the listed books are wildly (and apparently deliberately) inaccurate (i.e. one of my books is listed as being written in 2025) 3) Only a dozen of my 28 published novels are mentioned, with my more popular novels (including some that have their own Wikipedia articles) omitted. 4) The grammar has been altered, and not for the good--it now reads as if written by an eighth-grader.

The alterations do not appear to be vicious or damaging, but they are bewildering and not at all useful to any reader. It looks as if some kid got in there and started screwing around with the article just for fun.

I don't know if it's appropriate for me to attempt to edit a page about myself, so I'm starting here at the help desk. Is there anything I can do to help correct this damaged article?

Thank you for not editing the article yourself, which would have violated the conflict of interest and autobiography policies. If there are any other errors, you can identify them on the article talk page, preferably with links to reliable sources, such as book catalogs. "List of characters" articles and other spin-off articles

Are there established guidelines for "List of characters" articles? When are they appropriate, and when should they be avoided? What about other spin-off articles like "List of episodes," "Mythology of," etc.? - ClaireJV (talk) 20:16, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

I think it all boils down to user experience. For example, NCIS (TV series) would be way too long if it contained the episode lists and list of characters. But, for a series that only lasted one season or just a few episodes, it would probably be inappropriate to break out the episode and character lists into separate articles. Prosesize JavaScript

I've been trying to get the JavaScript at User:Dr pda/prosesize to work for me. I've followed the installation instructions, but it still doesn't work. Would anyone have any suggestions for what I should do? Alphius (talk) 20:44, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

What browser are you using? The documentation says that it won't work at all with Google Chrome and there may be problems with Internet Explorer and Firefox (though it works fine in Firefox for me). Are you aware that in order for the script to work, you have to click edit on a page, then click preview, and only then click the "Page size" link?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:57, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

It says that trying to do it without installing it might have problems in certain browsers, but doesn't say anything like that for the installed version. Oh yes, you're right, that's for the uninstalled application. However, there's some indication on the talk page that, regardless, it may not run in some versions of IE. If you're using it it, I'd try it with something else.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:19, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Oops. I apparently wasn't logged in when I left that comment. I'm sure most of the edits on that IP address aren't mine, because I'm on a shared IP address. Anyway, I am positive I was logged in when I tried to get the JavaScript to work. I just tried Firefox and Internet Explorer, too, and it didn't work for me in those, either. importScript('User:Dr pda/prosesize.js'); //User:Dr pda/prosesize.js

in your vector.js (and of course, clearing the cache again). It works for me (IE8).
