Have a picture to add to James Spradley page

From this upload form, you need only use "browse" to locate the image on your computer. Once you find it, press "upload file". You'll need to add the licensing information afterwords, but the image will be in Wikipedia and others then can help you with the licensing and other issues. -- Jreferee (talk) 01:11, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

WP:IP notes that you cannot upload files or images since you are trying to upload from an IP address. Once you register and qualify for WP:AUTOCONFIRM, you can upload files. -- Jreferee (talk) 01:18, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

There was an image improperly added to the infobox by an account called something like "Jim's sister" back in March. If that is this person, I have fixed the image to display in the article. - Purplewowies (talk) 04:53, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Password

What error message or other automated message did you get when you tried the reset password? (Also, Wikipedia user names are case-sensitive; did you enter your username with three capital letters, not just one, when trying to log in?) -- John Broughton (♫♫) 03:42, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Tools always breaking?

I often click links that use wiki-tools (is my wiki-jargon right?), such as Contributors in Revision history of articles, or Edit count in User contributions. However, and this seems to be increasing in frequency, these tools are producing various error messages. I have "heard" that it has something to do with the toolserver, but don’t understand what the toolserver is, and why this it is becoming rampant. Isn’t this a possible cause for the editor attrition we are all hearing about? I would appreciate any feedback on this matter. Thanks in advance, XOttawahitech (talk) 01:38, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

@Ottawahitech: Toolserver is a cluster of servers that run all the Wikipedia Toolserver tools. - copied from WP:TS From time to time, Toolserver malfunctions and as a result it goes down (more frequently these days). And it is going to be shut down at the end of this year to be replaced by Wikimedia Labs. Many of the tools have already been migrated to Labs: toollabs:. copyright

I have problems with the copyright of pictures I want to upload. I know how to upload the images, but they always get deleted. The images that I want to use belong to the World Taekwondo Federation. So they are copyrighted, but as I work for the WTF I have permission to use the images in my Wikipedia articles. It's not possible to use images for which permission has been given solely for use in Wikipedia articles. Wikipedia requires a license that allows free reuse of the images by others thereafter. If you want to use these images, you'll have to get the copyright holder to donate them, per David Biddulph's link above. If they don't want to do this, then you can't use them in Wikipedia articles. Fair use applies in very limited circumstances: if, for example, the subject of the image is dead so a substitute free-use image cannot ever be obtained. - Karenjc (talk) 10:09, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Richie Incognito - Wrongly edited personal info

While reading about Richie Incognito I found that the personal info section was incorrectly edited:

thank you for your response. i use multiple ip's -privileged- and the most recent edit is one of my edits. the user i'm reporting against does not alter or suggest improvements or even improve the contribution choosing instead to revert all of it. a group of users favonian/materialscientist/deltaquad have tools that allow them to do this and protect the pages i edit for long periods and also block my ip's over a wide range. can you look into that? thanks again. i'll let you know if this happens again. --

This edit summary deleting the above noted content from List of Assyrian kings reads "It's back." 117.210.6.143, if you have disagreement with removal of the content, the article talk page from the article where the material was removed is the place to discuss the matter. Editing under multiple IP addresses may be treated the same as editing under multiple accounts. Problem with Lou Johnson page

The page incorrectly identifies "Louisville" as his birthplace. It should be "Lexington". This is my uncle, Louis Brown Johnson. Thank you for making the correction.

Tool for interwiki link cleanup?

I'd like to know if there is a tool that does the following. Given a page on a specific language wikipedia, it goes through all of the links from that page which are interwiki and determines if any of those pages have same language equivalents. For example, if I enter [[:en:Tomato]] and there is link on that page to [[es:Rojo]] (because the person who added it didn't know there was an english language page for Red), the tool would alert that [[es:Rojo]] has an english language equivalent at [[en:Red]] and that the article can use that instead.Naraht (talk) 17:23, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Are you talking about WP:Wikidata or separately coded inter-wiki language links? You are aware, I assume, that Wikidata only copes with one-to-one correspondence? It would, I guess, be theoretically possible for a tool to identify when an article had hard-coded links to an article where a Wikidata link already exists to a different article in the same language; in such a case an editor could then review the tool's results to decide whether the linking arrangements might be improved (while still being constrained by Wikidata's one-to-one limitation). In most cases, however, it is likely to be found by the reviewer that the Wikidata already contains the best match, and that the others have to left hard-coded as extra links. I certainly don't believe that in such cases we could rely on a tool using computer translation to find the best match in the other language. - David Biddulph (talk) 17:40, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

The Wikitap phone app is published by a software company called Veveo, not the Wikimedia Foundation. If you have an issue with their app, you need to take it up with them. - Karenjc (talk) 21:12, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Why is this page under PC?

At the top of this page (Help Desk) I see this message: "The latest accepted version was accepted on November 4, 2013. There are 2 pending revisions awaiting review." and there is a lock icon in the corner. Why is the help desk protected? Pending Changes means that non-confirmed editors can put their edits into a queue, rather than either editing directly or being unable to edit. If this Help Desk has been vandalized by unregistered editors, that is exactly what should be done, so as to permit legitimate questions from unregistered editors to be answered after being reviewed. This Help Desk is a perfect example of when Pending Changes protection is desirable, because it does get a fair amount of legitimate question traffic from unregistered editors while preventing vandalism. (It is true that Pending Changes doesn't protect against vandalism by registered editors. That is dealt with by blocking or banning them.) Robert McClenon (talk) 02:33, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia listings

Hi, I've recently submitted (July) an entry for Gareth Jones the film director which is approved and live on Wikipedia. However, when we search from Wiki homepage, this Gareth Jones is not listed with the other 12. Can you explain how we can remedy this? Yes, Gareth Jones is a manually edited disambiguation page where article creators are expected to add new entries. The automatically generated search page on Gareth Jones did show the article. If you click "containing..." in the drop-down below the search box then you make a search instead of going directly to a matching page name. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:04, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

birth year error

Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information. I did a Google search for "Amanda Sutton" and I don't see a birthdate anywhere. That said, usually at the bottom of the summary window is a Feedback / More info link. Click on that and indicate which information/picture/etc. is incorrect. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:37, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Help with Article for Creation that was Deleted

Hi - I recently created an article without realizing that much the information already existed on the person's website. When I realized the information existed elsewhere, I contacted the individual, but in the meantime the page (which was still in draft form - not submitted) was deleted by an administrator. The individual to who this wikipedia page was to be about has since contacted Wikipedia with a note that they agree to publish that work under the free license "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported" and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts). Wikipedia has responded back accepting this. Where do I go from here? Is there a way to contact the administrator who deleted the page, asking for it to be reinstated? I don't want my account to be deleted.

The page was deleted by User:Wizardman. You can post a message to him or her at User talk:Wizardman. Or you can go to WP:Refund, which you should do if Wizardman doesn't respond in a day or two. It may take a little time for the clearance from the volunteer who accepted the license to be posted and available, but you should soon be good to go. No one has an account blocked for a single instance of copyright violation. Only if this is persisted in after warnings, or if there are significant aggravating factors (such as a very promotional username) does anyone get blocked. (Accounts are never deleted even if blocked on a long-term basis.) DES ^(talk) 22:45, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Note though that material copied from a persons website may well not be considered appropriate encyclopaedic content - articles are intended to be objective and neutral, rather than promotional. And note also that it will be necessary to establish that the person concerned meets our notability guidelines by reference to third-party published reliable sources. The deleted article included "She has written essays and reviews for the New York Times Book Review.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12]" Wikipedia does not permit WP:SYNTHESIS of sources. In other words, do not combine material from multiple sources to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources. Instead, just summarize what the sources says - one sentence, one footnote is usually alls that is needed. The sources and content used in a Wikipedia article are independent of the subject. If Toni Bentley wrote about herself, her giving copyright permission to use that text would not be independent of Toni Bentley, so it would not have much use in Wikipedia. -- Jreferee (talk) 03:49, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Multiple infoboxes

@Dr Gangrene: I know of no specific policy, guideline or recommendation, but the fruit of past discussion (from this search) appears mixed. I would sum up, after reading this, this, this and this, as that is usually only seen where an article is distinctly about two or more somewhat discrete but related topics and we should err on the side of avoiding it unless it really would help navigation and would not clutter the article. @Dr Gangrene and Fuhghettaboutit: - My quick look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes and Help:Infobox, the two primary pages for guidance on infoboxes, didn't find anything about multiple infoboxes.
