How can I see what templates will look at before placing them?

Hello fellow editors! I do a lot of work at Afc, so I am frequently using both the Afc script and Twinkle. Both of these tools (very useful, by the way) often place templates either on articles or on talk pages without allowing a preview. Often the text placed bears little resemblance to the short summary on the pop-down option list. Some of the list items don't say the name of the template tha will be placed. This makes me hesitant to use some of the features because I can't see what the result will be. Some templates have samples on their documentation pages, but not all. Is there a way to test out templates placed by these tools without actually placing them, in the same way that the "preview" function works on articles? An example is the "Warn" feature on Twinkle. I tried to use it in my sandbox, but it disappeared from the list. I tried it on my talk page, but it seemed to think that I was making an error by warning myself. —Anne Delong (talk) 01:05, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Hey Anne. To test article tagging, use the article sandbox. To test user-page tagging (warn, welcome, and talkback), use the user warnings sandbox. I've copied and pasted this from Wikipedia:Twinkle/doc, which has other material you might find useful. If I were you I'd keep those two sandboxes open in separate tabs as I was working. List of Angel Novels

I tried to add to the List of Angel Novels by putting in City Of, the novelization of the series premiere. I tried using edit beta and edit source, neither of which worked properly for me. Two sources, two versions

Hi. Last night, after the end of matches listed in the article 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification – CONCACAF Fourth Round, I waited for the end of various updates to make some technical controls. In a match, Honduras-Panama (2-2), the FIFA report (both in index and final report forms) assigns the 2nd Panamanian goal to Gabriel Torres, min. 90'. CONCACAF report assings it to Roberto Chen, min. 90+2' (see live commentary), after an assist... Yesterday I reverted an anon edit (this one) explaining the reasons in the summary and preferring FIFA version to CONCACAF's one because, in the doubt, FIFA's is the one linked in the article. By now I've seen this edits but I've not reverted them. Well, I've not reverted for some reasons: to avoid a possible edit war because the anon could be right (CONCACAF report) and, btw, the IP seems to come from Panama... and the IP could have seen the match on TV... Well, in cases as this one what is the report to follow? It's just a help request to a most experienced user in this field. Sorry for the mini-minimality of the problem shown. Just a thought but I think this is the video showing the scoring (except it's experiencing technical difficulties right now, at least when I try to view it). If you can view it and they focus in on the scoring goals, you should be able to see the face of the person scoring the goal (or maybe their team number) and match that to their public likeness or number. This might be seen to tread into original research territory, but what you would be doing is bolstering one of the existing sources with a corroborating source you can cite, with just a twist of commonsense that anyone can duplicate.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:19, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Split question

A user have decided to split an article without prior discussion on the that article page, to allow other users who follow it to comment, after a 4 comment "discussion" on another article, where he failed to gain consensus, and was asked to start a discussion in an appropriate place. I have reverted his changes t the article page, but what do I do with the new article he created? --PLNR (talk) 09:04, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Raymond Paul Russell

I am trying to add references to the Raymond Paul Russell page. He is a writer and was a child actor and has had 3 books published. I don't want to write it as an advertisement, just a record as I've seen on Wiki. I don't think I have put the correct punctuation around the internet links. I have added a new section heading above your question, as I don't think your question related to the #Split question topic under which you included it. I have also included a WP:wikilink to the article concerned. You asked a similar question at the Teahouse and I have tried to answer it there; it is generally frowned on to ask the same question in multiple places, as that can tend to result in contributors wasting time answering questions which have already been answered. Hope College Page, incorrect logo

Greetings. I have a few needs.

First off, I need the logo updated - which we cannot currently edit, and the page author is nonresponsive.

Secondly, I need my account to be confirmed and have the ownership of the Hope College page on wikipedia transferred from the independent user who created it, to myself or someone inside the college's Integrated Marketing office.

We don't as individuals or an office have the need to make edits on Wikipedia as a whole, but rather to manage the content about our organization.

Please advise as soon as possible. Thank you kindly

Not done and will not be done That is not how Wikipedia works. Nobody "owns" an article, least of all the subject of said article. The logo can be updated if it needs to be, but I'm not sure why. The logo appears correctly at the bottom of the infobox, and the seal at the top, as is common. As you have a conflict of interest, you shouldn't be editing the article, but if you want something changed, you should post on Talk:Hope College, explaining what you want changed, with reasons. --ColinFine (talk) 10:19, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

(Later:) I've added a caption to the seal, identifying it as the seal. If you look at pages for other universities, you will find that a seal or coat of arms is what usually appears in that position. --ColinFine (talk) 10:25, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Footnote Referencing with a Label in place of a URL

I have edited an article (of my own creation) by adding a link to "http://psychiatryonline.org/data/Journals/AJP/3683/1774.pdf" using the "Cite" function. The link appears in the footnotes just that way (with the addition of a pdf icon). What I wonder is: Is there a quick way to replace that long URL with a much shorter label, in this case with "American Journal of Psychiatry"? draft template param displaying pipe 2 ways

I'm drafting a template with a parameter that takes a manually-entered string as a value. If the string includes "{{!}}", the rendering depends on whether it is in a URL or not. If it is, the rendering is as "%7C"; but if is not in a URL, the rendering is as "|". In a test, I found that a URL (a different one) does not necessarily resolve percent-encoding to the unencoded form so the intended address can be reached (tested by percent-encoding either the dot before "com" or a letter); the Internet service provider was unable to determine what destination I wanted and sent me some advertising instead. How can I make the parameter display the literal result of the "{{!}}" template even if embedded in a URL, just as happens when there's a string without a URL? Although a pipe is not common in a URL, I think it is permitted. (I asked about the problem at Help talk:Template but there's no answer.) Nick Levinson (talk) 16:04, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

URL from draft template linked with next word

If a parameter value is a URL ending with either an equals sign or a template that generates an equals sign ("=" or "{{=}}", respectively, without quotation marks), the displayed result is of a linked URL that extends the link to include the next word in the displayed result, beyond the URL, making following the link difficult except for us geeks perceiving the error. Examples are visible of the overextended link despite ending with "{{=}}" and the proper link even though the value has subsequent text and the proper link even though the value has a subsequent space template (I assume a plain space there would get stripped) and are based on the template draft. By contrast, another template has no such problem. (I asked at Help talk:Template but there's no answer.) Nick Levinson (talk) 16:12, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

This has nothing to do with equals signs. The same happens for {{User:Nick Levinson/Subscription or libraries|via=ftp://test.example.com}} which generates code containing "ftp://test.example.com[[Category:X1]] (subscription may". Here the url doesn't end until the space in " may". The code in User:Nick Levinson/Subscription or libraries contains {{{via}}} with no space or other url-ending string afterwards (  is not url-ending), so it only works if the caller adds a space after the url in the via parameter. Spaces around named parameters are stripped so the caller must also add a non-space character after the space to make it work. Template:Subscription required has a space after {{via}} so that template works. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:06, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

More importantly, is your book "notable" i.e. does it meet the criteria at Wikipedia:Notability (books)? If not, any article that is created will be deleted. I need some help dealing with some guy who insists on vandalizing my contributions and falsely reporting me. Abraham Lincoln - color picture

Hi,

I saw the famous picture of Lincoln seating now available online with colors. This is a real professional work and it really show how the picture would look like if it had been taken with a today's camera. Would it be the Wikipedia policy to use one of those pictures? Cause it's obviously a fake but made to look so real.

If you do manage to log in (see Help:Logging in for ideas), your saved books will be listed if you click the "Contributions" link at the top right. Alternatively, you can visit Special:Contributions and key your user name in there, whether or not you have logged in, and see the names of any books you have saved.

For question 2, I believe the book software is currently configured to leave out any images that have copyright restrictions; i.e. those marked as "non-free". There's some discussion among the developers about this at bugzilla:50948. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:42, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

Search "Simpson"

I noted while searching "Simpson" you have links to places and people, however there is no link to sir James Young Simpson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Young_Simpson who pioneered the use of chloroform. By the way, you could have done this yourself, by simply clicking "edit source" and doing what I did, emulating the form of other entries. Wikipedia wants people to improve its content, if capable. If you have a desire, try the Wikipedia:tutorial to get started, and then consider signing up for an account, which takes just a few moments and provides significant advantages over editing by your IP address. In fact, every time you edit anything on Wikipedia, you are irrevocably releasing your contribution: "By clicking the "Save page" button, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL." --ColinFine (talk) 10:35, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

NeoBatfreak: by deleting Stiartis erid's contributions to your talk page, you make it slightly harder (only slightly - we can always look in the edit history) for other editors to form an accurate opinion of his activities. I didn't do anything. By the way, quoting his words "and truth hurts does it," proves that he deliberately sending offensive messages. On The Fog (2005 film) talk page, now he's using profanity. We don't need that kind of person around who would use personal attack and profanity. Thank you very agreeing with me. Still, at least block him for a week if not permanently. I am not an unreasonable man, as he believes. I do not wish to cause anyone's account to be block, but a week or two as a warning may let him know that we're serious and no one is allow to do whatever they like without considering the rules and regulations. I think it would be good for everyone involved to simply stop interacting with each other for a few days. Come back and have a civil conversation on the talk page about what changes might be made to the article.
