Hi @Ql87: Unfortunately the Articles for Creation (AfC) review process is heavily backlogged; there are over 3,500 pending submissions that have been waiting up to 8 weeks for review. Reviews aren't a first-in-first out, and the actual time you have to wait can vary widely depending on volunteers and the drafts they choose to review, but you can expect 8-10 weeks at worst (hopefully sooner!). ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:59, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi Ql87. If this is about Draft:Benjamin Lev then I note that your submission was declined on October 19th but that you have made some improvements since then. It would be useful to add references to independently published articles about the subject if you can find some whilst you are waiting for a further review. Reviewers might be put off by lots of self-published works given as references. Your references clearly show that the subject exists and has a career in academia, but Wikipedia requires rather stricter conditions; See WP:Notability (academics) for exact requirements, and put these essential references first to make life easier for reviewers. Putting the subject's own self-published website first is not a good idea. Dbfirs 02:19, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

uploading a photo

Dear Helpdesk,

I'm trying to upload a photo of Ataur Rahman Khan at this URL:

@Khanze1: You need to fill out a form stating that you own the copyright and that you are licensing it so that it may be reused for any purpose (not just on Wikipedia). See WP:IOWN. RudolfRed (talk) 06:22, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

@Khanze1: The photographer of the original picture (or his estate) owns the copyright. Your camera made a copy. That does not change the copyright. If you are the heir of the original photographer, you might own the copyright. Restoring deleted article

This is regarding Juan Mera González. It was deleted due to WP:NFOOTBALL and WP:GNG. Here is the discussion Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Juan Mera González. Now he is playing in I-League (here). In principle, yes. You can ask the deleting administrator, User:Vanamonde93, to send you the deleted text of the article or to undelete it and move it to draft space. You can then create and/or edit a draft to include information that indicates that the subject now meets notability criteria. And then you can submit it through the WP:AFC process. Weird bytecount in page history

At this history page, why is User:Geolodus's edit shown as 0 bytes and my edit immediately after it shown as 1,319 bytes when both of them have added text to the talk page? JIP | Talk 11:51, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

I estimate your answer to Geolodus to be about 300 characters, much less than his entry. But the history shows about 1300 char at your edit, which suggests it covers both edits with one increment. Apparently increments are calculated from stored lengths, and the length was not properly updated after Geolodus' edit. Capitalization in Dutch surnames

Is there any Manual of Style guidance on how to handle surnames that begin with lower case? For example, Mike van der Hoorn is titled with a lowercase "van der Hoorn" but uses "Van der Hoorn" throughout the article. Would it make sense to use "van der Hoorn" midsentence, but "Van der Hoorn" when at the beginning? Or some other style? Gnome de plume (talk) 13:38, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Gnome de plume, I don't know of any MoS guidance here (though that doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't exist). That said, our article on tussenvoegsels explains the Dutch custom decently well: written with lowercase when preceded by name (or initial), but capitalized otherwise. So "Van der Hoorn was born [...]" and "The 2012-13 campaign saw Van der Hoorn breakthrough" but "Mike van der Hoorn is a professional footballer". (Cases that tend to lead to confusion and mistakes most often--even in Dutch--are when surnames starting with a tussenvoegsel are preceded by a title but not a name or initial. Starts with a capital then as well, e.g. "Professor De Vries" not "Professor de Vries".)

That said, the above goes for Dutch Dutch only: Flemish (or "Belgian Dutch") follows different rules: surnames with tussenvoegsels are always written with capitals, even if preceded by name or initial, and frequently get the tussenvoegsel collated into the surname at least as far as alphabetized lists go, while in Dutch, tussenvoegsels are simply ignored when alphabetizing (so e.g. "Jan de Grote" would be listed after, not before, "Jan Evert") AddWittyNameHere 16:04, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

This sounds like a case where WP:LANGVAR applies - use the Dutch style for Dutch-related articles and Flemish style for Flemish articles; and defer to MOS:RETAIN for articles without a clear connection to either. @Gnome de plume: Yup, Flemish/Dutch is pretty much a textbook case of LANGVAR, and not just where surnames are concerned. Fair few differences between the two in general. AddWittyNameHere 18:23, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Naraht Fair enough. It doesn't apply to the English Wikipedia's LANGVAR guideline because they're obviously not different national varieties of English. (It's a close equivalent for the few parts of Dutch/Flemish that are actually relevant to an English-language 'pedia, though) My phrasing above was badly chosen in light of that. As such, while it might be useful to add a note or two, the best place is probably not the LANGVAR section since that deals with English varieties. MOS:NAME seems a better spot. (That said, I'm not entirely sure whether it's worth noting something so specific in the manual of style, though I'm not against it either.) AddWittyNameHere 20:17, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

reference other wikipedia articles with specific, copied sections

Noob here to wikipedia editing.

In some articles they not only reference other wikipedia articles, but they copy whole other sections. I can't figure out what that's called or if there are specific guidelines for doing this correctly.

Example.

Each little section is from a large main article - as in prequel trilogy in this main page references and links to an entire article about the prequel trilogy and copies passages from it.

​It's all just done by hand. Sometimes people copy sections from the other article, but most often the sections are written to fit well in the main article, the main article gives a broad overview. You can point to more specific articles either by just linking to them or by adding {{main|Star Wars sequel trilogy}} below the relevant headers. I m trying to correct inaccuracies and also put a more truthful perspective to Farah Damji's Wikipedia entry. Anything positive is immediately deleted. This appears to be some kind of witch hunt. Wrong Info and inadiquate references on Paramount Home Media Dstribution Page.

Hello, I'm an employee of Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment and would like to call to your attention that there is WRONG information and inadequate referencing on the Paramount Home Media Distribution page. I've copied the first 8 paragraphs here as the example. All of this information has ONE point of reference supporting it. And that site referenced DOES NOT support all of the 8 paragraphs about it. I would like to begin removing the false information that you've allowed on this page that is erroneously supported by one reference (that does not support the 8 paragraphs above it). History[edit] In 1993, Paramount launched a deal with fast food restaurant McDonald's to release several of its movies at participating restaurants. Charlotte's Web, Ghost, Wayne's World and The Addams Family were the films that were available. The back catalog of DreamWorks Pictures has been released on video by PHMD. (except the 1998–2005 DreamWorks Animation library, and the North American distribution rights of Munich, The Cat in the Hat, A Beautiful Mind, Meet The Parents, Seabiscuit, and Meet The Fockers, all under the ownership of Universal Pictures, with Minority Report and Cast Away under 20th Century Fox) Films from Republic Pictures, Paramount's other subsidiary, are not distributed on video and DVD by PHMD (with some exceptions), but are distributed on video and DVD by Olive Films. Prior to 2012, these films were distributed by Lionsgate Home Entertainment, which was acquired from previous rights holder Artisan Entertainment (which merged with Lionsgate in 2003). This deal later expanded to include some of Paramount's own post-1949 films, typically lesser-known or lesser-performing titles. Also, as a result of this deal, Lionsgate has released in 2007 "triple features" of their own library of films on DVD using the package design originated by Paramount. With Republic's folding, Lionsgate's duty has been transferred to Olive. Films from Rysher Entertainment are also distributed by PHMD due to a previous distribution deal from 1999. PHMD have developed a trademark by giving their Special Edition/Director's Cut editions different names rather than the usual "Special Edition," or "Director's Edition". Paramount Home Entertainment gives them different names such as Grease: The Rockin' Rydell Edition, Beavis & Butthead Do America: The Edition That Doesn't Suck and Airplane!: The "Don't Call Me Shirley" Edition. Internationally, PHMD holds the DVD rights to several shows on HBO. PHMD also distributes in Germany the DVD releases of films distributed theatrically by Prokino Filmverleih, as well as films from Gaumont in France. As Paramount Home Video, the company once distributed several Miramax releases on video – the video rights to some of these films (such as Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth) are still owned by Paramount.[1]

Donations

It would be great if Wiki would include a checkbox on their donation windows for "I give" which would include a subroutine that would turn off the donation pleas for that user if it crosses to a table of people who donate. and, Eericmatus, I regard it as very important indeed for Wikipedia's perceived impartiality, that no information at all about donors is available within Wikipedia: that is all handled by the Foundation's separate systems. Donations - Does the Public Have Any Say in Their Donations Being Used to Prevent Annoyances?

You know, I am all for organizations such as Wikipedia asking for donations. But, when the public sees annoying messages such as "Your browser will no longer be supported in the near future; better get yourself a new browser to visit our site.", I firmly believe all desire to donate money to such a website is right in disappearing right away, vanishing without a trace or any sympathy for such decisions. Who wants to support a website with his hard-earned money, only to see that website later shutting the door right in people's faces?! You are free to use most images here as you please (with some exceptions such as movie posters) if you give appropriate credit somewhere. Click on the images and then "More detail" to see who the author is and what license should be included. – Thjarkur (talk) 21:23, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Please do be careful to comply with the copyright license terms. Most of our images are under very liberal licenses, but those licenses require you to attribute the work.
