Use a group note/reference multiple times

edit

Currently in Union_raid#Notes it repeats the notes twice. How do I create a note once, and repeatedly link to it, while displaying it only once in Notes section? ~ Shushugah (talk) 01:12, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For the first use of a given reference: <ref name="whatever">Full bibliographical (and/or other) details</ref>. For subsequent uses of the same reference: <ref name="whatever" />. Adjust "whatever" to taste, of course, but the string has to be the same if you want the reference to be the same. -- Hoary (talk) 02:37, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I figured it out. This is using a different template called {{refn}} the syntax needed can be found here ~ Shushugah (talk) 03:05, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am Rachel who worked in Hong Kong First Pacific Company Limited, I would like to show the full name of the Business section and updated as below:

Businesses Indonesia: • Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur Tbk

Philippines: • Metro Pacific Investments Corporation • PLDT Inc. • Philex Mining Corporation • Roxas Holdings, Inc.

Singapore: • PacificLight Power Pte. Ltd.

Besides, is it possible to delete "Former business", "See also" and "Reference" section as the information was outdated, please advise.

FPC Rachel, this is better posted at Talk:First Pacific as an edit request, so that uninvolved editors can add that information for you. A reliable source would be extremely helpful in verifying this claim.
As you are operating on a paid-editing relationship for First Pacific, you are required to disclose such a relationship on your userpage at User:FPC Rachel. You may use the {{paid}} template to do so. Please refrain from directly editing the article.Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:35, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Naming conventions for air marshals

edit

I was going to disambiguate a page but I couldn't find a naming convention for military officers, or the one specfically for airforce's air marshal. I searched all over, even in the Naming convention category but couldn't find one for it. Can somebody guide me on it? USaamo (t@lk) 05:56, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@USaamo: Please link the page. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:49, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Arshad Malik. — Preceding unsigned comment added by USaamo (talkcontribs)
There is no reason to disambiguate this page as far as I can see. An air marshal and CEO usually trumps a judge (not on Pakistan's highest court). Clarityfiend (talk) 20:51, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@USaamo: WP:PRIMARYTOPIC is hard to judge here. Comparing page views [1] the judge has more recent interest but that's due to his death 4 December 2020 where the article was created. The air marshal clearly gets most of his recent views from people searching the judge but the long-term significance will probably be different. I haven't found a relevant guideline if we do disambiguate. Category:Royal Air Force air marshals uses (RAF officer) but RAF is better known in English speakers than PAF. Category:Indian Air Force air marshals is mixed. (air marshal) or (Pakistan Air Force officer) are possible. We have three (Pakistan Army officer) [2] but no Pakistan Air Force and no PAF [3]. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:11, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Clarityfiend and PrimeHunter: Although usually an air marshal trumps an accountability court judge but the said judge is more relevant in Pakistan due to his sentence to a former Prime Minister and leader of biggest opposition party who is currently in abscondance in London. Moreover the subsequent videogate involving the same judge over the same sentence made it actually more relevant and is always discussed in politics in the country especially during ongoing opposition movement while that air marshal besides from being CEO of national carrier has no importance. So here in this case judge's importance is more than that of air marshal and is not just because of his death only. Secondly PAF is quite a known airforce in aviation world due to being an active airforce in the region so for those Arshad Malik matters most will get PAF most likely. Anyhow Arshad Malik (air marshal) seems more plausible. Also I'm thinking about moving Arshad Malik to Arshad Mahmood Malik for a reason that full names too are quite common in our country and he is referred to as Arshad Mahmood at many instances. We have two other people with a similar name, Muhammad Arshad Malik and Mohammad Malik Arshad. Muhammad being one of the most common name in the country used in start of names is not usually used to call when there's a whole name ahead. Like Nawaz Sharif, his full name is Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. Similarly the full name of judge in discussion is also Muhammad Arshad Malik. So that's why I want to disambiguate that page. Account compromised

edit

Hi there, I am Devopam. Today I got notification for too many failed attempts and thereafter got an email stating that the email address has been changed successfully to a new one that I don't own. In simple words : I got chucked out of the system altogether. Can you please at least put the account on hold to avoid malicious and unauthorized editing on my behalf. Thanks and regards. Devopam — Preceding unsigned comment added by 136.185.169.146 (talk) 08:43, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pipes are for wikilinks, not external link syntax.[4] A user with 3526 edits would usually know this and sign their post. The account has no edits or log entries for seven months. It is extended confirmed user and new page reviewer but has no sensitive rights. I don't think it will be blocked without evidence or abusive edits. I'm not blocking it. There is a committed identity at User:Devopam/CI so see Template:Committed identity#Password reset. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:22, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A Checkuser zzuuzz has blocked it. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:33, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, per CU, I think that's a compromise, and I've just blocked this and several other compromised accounts. If it's not an actual compromise, which I think it is, then there's some real funny other business going on by the same user. To Devopam, this account should be globally locked by a steward, and I'll head over shortly to request that. There are several pages around describing this situation, perhaps m:Help:Compromised accounts is the most obvious one. If you regain control or have questions, feel free to drop me a ping. -- zzuuzz (talk) 09:37, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Much thanks for blocking edits + user , at least someone won't be able to abuse. I am unsure how they could get hold of the password in the first place but that is a discussion for much later. I had stopped editing for a while now, and today suddenly I got two emails that got me alarmed. I don't know how to regain control as the only other identifier viz. email is updated to something that I don't own in the first place. 136.185.169.146 (talk) 10:43, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why is my "uptobox.com",_which_alexa_rank_is_<_2000. link redirecting to help desk but not my question? Rizosome (talk) 13:32, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Rizosome: There are two problems. The section was archived to Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2020 December 14#Please create a wiki article on "uptobox.com", which alexa rank is < 2000. The original url to an archived section doesn't work unless it is a permanent link which is "frozen" at the time and doesn't include later posts. Secondly, some characters require encoding in external link syntax per Help:URL#Fixing links with unsupported characters. In my Firefox you can click it in the table of contents and copy from the address bar to get the url here. We usually prefer url's with en.wikipedia and not en.m.wikipedia which is the mobile version of the site. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:18, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question about IBAN

edit

Hi! If an editor receives an IBAN and TBAN and wants to make an appeal to AN, are they allowed to reference the editor who they are in an IBAN with in the appeal? I assume that this does not count as a violation of the IBAN because it would be impossible to speak about the ban without mentioning the other editor, but I just wanted to make sure. Thank you! Bgkc4444 (talk) 13:40, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Bgkc4444: I would suggest that WP:AN is the correct venue for this question. Ask there without mentioning the other party and you should be safe. Mjroots (talk) 20:40, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mjroots: Great, thank you! Bgkc4444 (talk) 20:55, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SPA problems

edit

I don't think this has reached ANI level yet, but it may be getting close. O811RT1 joined Wikipedia to prod and then nominate the articles on Sasha Anawalt and her father Francis Cunningham for deletion. One AfD is finished as a keep but SPA yesterday removed information for not being notable, complete citations from newspaper archives because they were not hyperlinked, and caused other issues that required a complete revert of their 16 edits. They pay no heed to talk page messages (on their own talk page and Anawalt's) or instructions in how to edit. I have tried my derndest to do that and to address the editor's concerns and lofty requests. Now I am being criticized for it. Please review "citation needed" additions, the likes of which I have never seen before, in the most recent edit of the page, and see the recent edit history. The user says the article could be used to market Anawalt and repeatedly suggests the Gillian Flynn article is more the idea. These are apples and... ghost peppers and I don't know how to spell that out. I am stepping back for a day so I do not edit war over semantics, though I may post more on the growing Anawalt talk page.

  1. Would someone go to User:O811RT1's talk page and inform them about edit warring and other best practices?
  2. Would someone please intercede on their most recent edits to Sasha Anawalt and chime in on the talk page?
  3. I suspect the IP editor who made delete comments without saying delete in this edit [1] is said SPA. I find it curious that two editors wrote vulgar things on the article on Anawalt yesterday as and right after the SPA edited (check its edit history for now-hidden revisions). Not sure whether those users can be checked against IP and SPA, but is it possible to have a SPI or at least see if the users are from the same household as O811RT1?

Thank you. DiamondRemley39 (talk) 13:57, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Negative contents in a category

edit

According to Category:Old Bolsheviks, there are negative six pages in one subcategory: Joseph Stalin‎ (11 C, −6 P) It really has eleven subcategories and fifty-two pages. How can this be fixed? 64.203.186.108 (talk) 16:47, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There has been issues with category counts for years. See e.g. phab:T221795 and phab:T18036. {{PAGESINCATEGORY:Joseph Stalin|pages}} produces 61 which also currently says −6. There isn't anything for editors to do. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:03, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Orange County

edit

Orange County was formed in 1752 from parts of Chatham County and Moore County. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.185.146.76 (talk) 18:38, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Moore County, North Carolina wasn't founded until 1784 according to our article. You may be thinking of Lee County, North Carolina formed from Chatham County and Moore County in 1907. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:41, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Orange County was made up of Chatham County.

Orange_County,_North_Carolina alredy says that. If you see an issue with an article, start a discussion on that article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 19:33, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I just created this Wikiquote page of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (URL: https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Zayed_bin_Sultan_Al_Nahyan) in English & I want to link it to its Arabic version (URL: https://ar.wikiquote.org/wiki/زايد_بن_سلطان_آل_نهيان) but I received a message saying my account is blocked to make such action by (User: Esteban16). Could you please tell me how to fix that problem & why am I blocked from making this action?

I'm still a new contributor to Wiki Pages & still learning all the rules. Please help me out.

@Majid.albahrani: articles are linked through Wikidata. Your account on Wikidata was blocked by d:User:Esteban16 for Promotion-only account. I am not an expert at Wikidata, but you could try to appeal the block by adding {{unblock|Your reason here}} (as it appears when viewing this page) to your Wikidata user talk page. Does two articles in a county newspaper meet WP:GNG?

edit

Hey, I was researching a band (Heterodox) and I found two (possibly more) articles specifically on the band in a local newspaper (the Isle of Wight County Press). I would be kind of surprised if the band was notable and so I thought it would be better to ask if this was worth creating a draft to submit to AfC (or whatever the process is)? ~ El D. (talk to me) 20:28, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@El komodos drago: Bands need to meet WP:NBAND. Mjroots (talk) 20:37, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't NBAND clause 1 the same as the GNG? ~ El D. (talk to me) 23:17, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Likely a waste of time. Local coverage is not enough. It's the same sort of thing that applies to mayors of small towns. They get lots of local media attention, but their articles get deleted regularly. Clarityfiend (talk) 20:55, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Clarityfiend: Thanks. Can I ask what part of NBAND 1 (or other policy) prevents local media? ~ El D. (talk to me) 23:17, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Edits undone

edit

  Courtesy link: Inayat Khan

My edits were recently undone after adding constructive material with sources to a poorly written page containing a large number of inaccuracies. The user who undid my changes accused me of vandalism and provided no supporting reasons. How can I restore my changes despite the objections of this user (maybe an administrator?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mirmughal (talkcontribs) 21:51, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mirmughal: If your edits are reverted, then start a discussion on the article's talk page. See WP:BRD -- Bold, Revert, Discuss. You are now at step (D) -- discuss it. RudolfRed (talk) 00:10, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Mirmughal, I don't think it was helpful to characterize it as vandalism but I agree with RudolfRed, the next step is to open a discussion on the article talk page. S Philbrick(Talk) 00:49, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
