editWhy do I keep getting 504 errors when publishing
editEvery time I try to edit an article I keep getting the error message "Error contacting the Parsoid/RESTBase server (HTTP 504)". I've tried this on multiple wi-fi networks and it still won't work. I'm not even sure if I can publish this here. Can someone help me troubleshoot? I've searched the internet and only found people who are trying to find out why their personal wikis are getting this error and (I think) server-side remedies to the problem. UppercutPawnch (talk) 02:27, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- @UppercutPawnch: This seems to be related to the page length, but I'm not sure. You might also want to ask that question at the technical village pump. Kleinpecan (talk) 04:33, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Kleinpecan: Thanks for that, I just asked it there with some additional information. Sorry to anyone mad at me for posting this in the help desk section, I should've looked before I leaped.
Did anyone see my response?
edit@Arch dude, well I believe that it does and if you read the article you will see. It is the third largest African American company in the United States and has won numerous accolades for its growth, impact, and focus on diversity. Additionally, in 1998, its initial five-year GM contract was the largest contract ever awarded to a racial minority-owned business by an automaker. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ashleymw78 (talk • contribs)
- You'll need to provide prominent, independent reliable sources to back that up and to establish that those sources consider the company notable, which makes a case for inclusion in a global encyclopedia. Notability isn't established by advocacy. By "the article," I assume you mean the deleted copyrighted content from the company's website, which cannot be used on Wikipedia. And once again, you appear to have a conflict of interest - please read WP:COI. Undisclosed paid editing is a violation of Wikipedia's terms of use. Acroterion (talk) 03:54, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
-Arch dude (talk) Thank you very much! Also, how do I submit this to the volunteers then to review it?

- @Ashleymw78: You will have to add {{subst:Submit}} to the top of your article. Kleinpecan (talk) 08:53, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- Kleinpecan ok great! thank you and will do! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ashleymw78 (talk • contribs) 08:55, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Interwikis don't work in user space?
editSee Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics and my sandbox.--SilverMatsu (talk) 05:55, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- @SilverMatsu: You have to add a colon before the language code in the link (i. e.,
[[:fr:Numérisation de documents anciens mathématiques]]
). Otherwise, the software treats it as a local interlanguage link, and puts it in the "Languages" section in the sidebar. Kleinpecan (talk) 06:41, 12 May 2021 (UTC) - You have to add a colon in every namespace, not just in user space. Talk pages and Meta-Wiki are the only exceptions:
On Talk pages and on Meta, you can omit the leading colon. An interlanguage link like
[[fr:Jeux olympiques]]
will appear inline in the text, like a regular link.- Kleinpecan (talk) 06:50, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Kleinpecan: Thank you for telling me. I tried it and it worked.--SilverMatsu (talk) 07:09, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
HELP! How can you remove an Everybody's Wiki page?
edit{Help me}}
Hi everybody,
I am rewriting the Everybody's Wiki page for Jeff Bien at his request. I am assisting on his internet, and am unable to make any changes or edits to the page. I think this may be because I am accessing Wiki from his IP address.
He wishes this page to be completely removed. {{db-userreq}}
Thanks for your help.
TruthInCanada (talk) 05:56, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- TruthInCanada, as answered at the Teahouse, Wikipedia is completely unrelated to EverybodyWiki. Alyo (chat·edits) 06:15, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
can only see categories when i try to translate
editHi,
I want to translate articles, and i did som last week, but now when i start a translation, only the category tags are visible. I don't see the article and i cant edit anything. Do you know why that is? It's like that with all articles.
thank you, Maria — Preceding unsigned comment added by SpråkpolisMaria (talk • contribs) 08:01, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- I'd assume you are attempting to use WP:CXT, which is disabled for users who aren't extended confirmed. You can still create draft articles manually by translation. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 08:43, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- @SpråkpolisMaria: Which article are you trying to translate to which language? Please link the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:46, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Conseil canadien des normes
editI would like to replace the logo on the "fr:Conseil canadien des normes" page with the new logo of the organization, which is already being used on the English version of the page, "Standards Council of Canada". I am uncertain of how to do this as the info box only seems to access images from wikipedia commons. Any help in updating this logo would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.MandatoryStudentAccount (talk) 12:24, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- The image currently used in the English-language article is here at Commons. -- Hoary (talk) 12:59, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hoary, MandatoryStudentAccount had updated the article and logo, but their edits were reverted today as promotional. This is probably a question for a Fr Wikipedia forum, such as fr:Wikipédia:Forum des nouveaux. TSventon (talk) 13:06, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) As far as I can see, the image was sourced from a website and claims to be free from copyright restrictions as it "consists only of simple geometric shapes or text." However it may still be protected as a trademark, so you need to tread carefully when putting it in other language Wikipedia articles. The best place to ask about this is at Commons:Village_pump/Copyright, MandatoryStudentAccount. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:09, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, I see now that MandatoryStudentAccount is actually talking about the non-free (new) logo they uploaded to en Wikipedia and wanted to put in the article. Assuming that all the criteria at WP:NONFREE are met, it will be OK for the English article provided it is added without promotional text but, as TSventon says, the French Wikipedia may well have alternative rules. Finding connected socks
editHow can I figure out what the other socks/sockmaster are for a blocked user that doesn't have a link on their page? I'm trying to find out what else has been connected to User:Hardcore Metallica Fan and those links are grey. Thanks for any help, please ping on reply! —valereee (talk) 14:28, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- @valereee: From their user page, I clicked on "What links here" in the sidebar and found a link to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Shane Cyrus/Archive, where it looks like that user was found to be socking with IPs. DanCherek (talk) 14:32, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, so smart! Thanks! —valereee (talk) 14:46, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
I have put the translation on Draft namespace, what to do next?
editCourtesy link: Draft:わが身にたどる姫君
It is here わが身にたどる姫君. I think it is both noteworthy and verifiable enough (since there are a lot of references). I would like to know the specific procedure.--Kurobe-muhi (talk) 14:44, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- In addtion I have edited Japanese wikipedia many times.--Kurobe-muhi (talk) 14:45, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Kurobe-muhi: You will have to add {{subst:Submit}} to the top of your article. En Wikipedia will have different requirements than Ja Wikipedia. Is it possible to convert some of the References section into in line citations in the Notes section? Also I suggest moving the article to Draft:Wagami ni Tadoru Himegimi. useless redirect on Preferment (Church)
editHello, how does one fix a bad redirect? Preferment (Church) goes to Clergy, which does not even mention the word, let alone explain it. From reading the definition in the wiki dictionary [1] perhaps Rector_(ecclesiastical)#Historical_use or Advowson or Benefice would be a better redirect? I really do not know enough to know which if either but I do know a useless redirect is very frustrating. Thanks for your help! 70.67.193.176 (talk) 15:35, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for bringing it to attention. I've changed the redirect target to Benefice#Church of England. I hope that helps. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 16:16, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks very much Eggishorn!70.67.193.176 (talk) 17:04, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
The Office (tv-series), season 5, episode 12
editIn IMDb it says that "The Duel" is episode 11, not 12.
Source: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1248734/
- Hello and Welcome to the Help desk (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this:
~~~~
. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.). I am afraid that IMDB is not considered a reliable source by Wikipedia, because it is user-generated. Victor Schmidt (talk) 18:11, 12 May 2021 (UTC)- IMDb counts the season 5 start Weight Loss (The Office) as one long episode. Wikipedia counts it as two normal length episodes. The official NBC site is unavailable in my country and I don't know which is more correct but we should continue to be consistent. This means that if we changed "The Duel" to say episode 11 instead of 12 then we would have to change a lot of other things. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:24, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
updating a source
editHow does one keep a source from being reverted back to the original? There is a link that has an error message and should be changed to a correct link right? 73.167.238.120 (talk) 20:02, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- You are correct, and I have reverted back to your update. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:08, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
OK, thanks! 73.167.238.120 (talk) 20:12, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Manually add reply button to conversation
edito/, first time opening a thread here. on my talk page a user has manually edited the page to create a Topic, and it lacks a reply button. manually fixing did not work. is there a template or some way I can modify the page to fully fix this? cheers, Scaledish! Talkish? Statish. 20:14, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- Scaledish, you may be interested in reply-link.js or the Discussion Tools beta feature. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 20:24, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for responding! While I am unsure of what reply-link achieves, oddly I was able to fix my issue by simply editing to resign my comment. odd, but at least I have a solution :).
- Thanks for reaching out, sorry for the silly issue :) Scaledish! Talkish? Statish. 20:43, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Can I put non-free images in my user page or other pages?
editI was trying to put a non-free image of several game box covers into my user page. Is it OK to put non-free images in other pages (like Cui Jian's Nothing to My Name in other Wikipedia pages)? Evan0512 (talk) 21:26, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- No * Pppery * it has begun... 21:35, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- Evan0512. Non-free images are allowed only in articles, under the strict standards described at WP:NFCI. Non-free images are not allowed on user pages. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 23:37, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Issues with Recent changes
editWhen I visit Special:RecentChanges often times my default filter is removed. Sometimes, this happens without even reloading the page! It rights itself after 5 minutes and clicking back, but is very annoying due to its frequency. Is this a known bug? I have tried across two devices and two browsers, and the issue continues to regularly happen Scaledish! Talkish? Statish. 23:22, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
