editurgent information need
editWho have the authority to approved the article on wikipedia? And, to whom appeal if any one declined article without any specific reason. Bhajan Das (talk) 06:35, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- Do you mean https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Bdas.in#Your_submission_at_Articles_for_creation:_Vidushi_Sunanda_Sharma_(August_26) ? The reviewer gave a reason for that. Chidgk1 (talk) 07:14, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- I guess if you had asked them to be more specific they might have said that the "Education and Musical Training" and "Early Life" sections have no cites Chidgk1 (talk) 07:24, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Bdas.in. Very few things are truly urgent on Wikipedia. Dealing with declined articles is never urgent. We handle such matters slowly to be sure that we get it right. People who say "this is urgent" get ignored, unless they make a compelling case. Cullen328 (talk) 07:26, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

- @Bdas.in I note that you have moved the article into Mainspace at Vidushi Sunanda Sharma, without attending to any of its many issues mentioned by the reviewers Theroadislong and Greenman. In its present form it is unlikely to survive the new pages patrol and I would urge you to ensure the article meets (at minimum) the mandatory requirements for biographies of living people, namely that all facts be cited to reliable sources. - @Orangemike The first image in the draft is at Commons, uploaded by user MediaNetWorksLtd. Is that an acceptable account name on Commons? 71.228.112.175 (talk) 09:09, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
- I don't know what the rules are on Commons, to be honest. Orange Mike | Talk 00:19, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- From the Commons "username policy" page:
- Organizations
- Use of the names of organizations is allowed on Commons only if you verify your account, proving that you are or represent the respective organization. While Commons allows using the name of an organization as a username, English Wikipedia and many other Wikimedia projects do not. You can use different accounts for Commons and Wikipedia, but if you want to use the same account for all projects you should comply with the more restrictive Wikipedia username policy.
- Be aware that your organization account is responsible for all of its edits. Do not give any employee that doesn't fully understand Commons policies access to the account credentials. Policy violations will not be waived because "Jerry did it".
- Using Commons to upload promotional material that is outside of Commons' scope is not permitted, even if the account has been verified. Unambiguously promotional accounts may be blocked.

Are captions automatically copied from Wikimedia Commons?
editHello,
I just added some missing English language captions to Wikimedia Commons. As you can see the pics are used in a couple of wind farm articles which are excerpted to Wind power in Turkey. Will the captions eventually be automatically copied do you know? If not can I make a technical request for this to happen by default (I mean if the caption is left blank in the article) in future? Chidgk1 (talk) 07:08, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, Chidgk1. Images on Wikimedia Commons do not include captions. They include file names and file descriptions. When those images are used in various Wikimedia projects, editors may choose to add captions at the local level. For example, the same image may be used in the English Wikipedia with an English caption and on the Japanese Wikipedia with a Japanese caption. If no editor at the local level writes a custom caption for that project, then the file name will be used as a caption. This is not optimal. Cullen328 (talk) 07:34, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- You are right that "caption" does not appear in the text when the top "edit" link is clicked. But they can be added by scrolling down to "file information" and clicking "edit" on the right.
- Perhaps if we discuss an example I will understand better.
- For example I just made this change:
- to add an English caption and if my Turkish was better I could similarly add a Turkish caption.
- So can I make a request to have the English captions automatically copied to English Wikipedia in future if there is no existing caption on English Wikipedia? Chidgk1 (talk) 07:47, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Chidgk1: commons:Commons:File captions is a feature from 2019. It uses mw:Extension:WikibaseMediaInfo which isn't installed in the English Wikipedia. As far as I know, there is no way to display a Commons caption here and no process to copy it into an article. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:34, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Numbered list puzzle
editHi, I have a question for Dutch WikiSource, but since there are not many users there, I ask here. I want to make numbered list with the following style: 1°, 2°, 3° etc. How to insert the ° instead of a . ?
TIA, H. (talk) 15:09, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Hamaryns: It should be under the Dutch equivalent of
Special characters
if you're using the source editor, or if you're using the visual editor. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:28, 29 August 2022 (UTC) - If you're not planning on using it a lot, you might do something like the following: This would render as:
<ol> <li style="list-style-type: '1° '">item 1</li> <li style="list-style-type: '2° '">item 2</li> <li style="list-style-type: '3° '">item 3</li> </ol>
- item 1
- item 2
- item 3
li
and increment the number before the°
.
This would work for small scales, but it would become tedious quickly, and make for not-so-nice wikitext. For larger-scale uses, I would look into making a template; I think it should be doable with TemplateStyles and CSS counters. Rummskartoffel 16:00, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Note that this solution breaks WP:ACCESSIBILITY. The ":" prefix defines a definition-list item, so you are actually creating a <dl> definition list containing a set of <dd> definitions each containing an orphaned <li> tag; the <ol> tag is discarded. I don't recommend it.Bazza (talk) 16:11, 29 August 2022 (UTC)- @Bazza 7: the

Videos
editHow do I access video's on Wiki? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.113.100.202 (talk) 15:13, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "access videos on Wiki"? If you're talking about videos which have already been uploded to Wikipedia or to Commons, you should be able to watch them directly. Other than that, I don't know what you might mean. ColinFine (talk) 15:40, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- Welcome to Help Desk! Search on c:Main for any freely released videos, or specifically exploring this category c:Category:Videos. Youtube is probably a better for copyrighted videos though and fine-tuned search ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 01:56, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
- If you want to watch them and have JavaScript, I believe you can click on the video to watch it on the page directly.
