Why can't you thank IP users edits?

I've read through Help:Notifications/Thanks and understand it, but was just wondering why you can't also "thank" IP editors for their contributions? I'm thinking it may be a technical issue, but was just curious. I see there are alternatives etc, but was wondering specifically about the actual "Thanks" functionality. Ta. How do you know an IP user still has the same IP address when you thank them? Bazza (talk) 08:50, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

I don't, but I would be thanking the edit not necessarily the user - which from a certain point of view, is what we do with registered users as well when you get down to it. Anyway, I appreciate the comment, but it's not an answer, unless it was meant as rhetorical - so I'll rephrase: Why can't we thank edits made by IP addresses? @Chaheel Riens If you log out, you'll see that a number of features on your menu disappear, including the "Alert" and "Notification" links normally (on a PC browser) across the top of the page. That's one of the technical limitations. As I think you have realised from H:THX, IP users do have Talk Pages and can be contacted for thanks that way, with several templates available. You said you've read Help:Notifications/Thanks, but maybe did not notice the feature allows editors to send a "thank you" notification to users who make useful edits: you're not thanking the edit (as you said), you are thanking the user who made it. Article issue

Hello9627 First, if you are associated with the company, please read about conflict of interest and paid editing(which includes mere employment) for information on required formal disclosures.

Wikipedia is not for merely telling about a company and what it does. A Wikipedia article about a company must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about the company, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable company. Press releases, staff interviews, announcements of routine business activities, and the like do not establish notability. "Significant coverage" goes beyond the mere reporting of the actitivies of the company and goes into detail about the significance or influence of the company as the source sees it, not as the company itself sees it. Please read Your First Article. I see that you made 10 edits to get autoconfirmed so you could directly create the article- I would strongly urge you to consent to moving the draft to Draft space so you can work on it at your leisure and submit it for a review by a more experienced editor before it is formally placed in the encyclopedia. 331dot (talk) 09:33, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Invisible characters

Help with Template:Cite act

Can someone cite Section 43, Paragraph 2 of the German Residence Act with Template:Cite act? I honestly have no idea how to cite this and I've been trying for a while now and I've given up and resorted to asking for someone to cite it for me as all of my attempts have been futile. @Treetoes023 My first stab would be Act on the Residence, Economic Activity and Integration of Foreigners in the Federal Territory (PDF) (Directive). Federal Ministry of Justice and the Federal Office of Justice. 17 February 2020. p. 69. (see source code for markup). That doesn't use all the available parameters but would get the reader to the correct page, which is all that really matters, I think. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:37, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Treetoes023 I personally do not think this is a directive. I would leave the type parameter blank, which defaults to act, which is what the english translation of the name literally has in its name. The only mentions of directive I see in this legislation, are referring to European Directives (which slightly differ from European Regulation. But in general, any German legislation that ends with Gesetz, can be translated to "Act" like Works Constitution Act. WikiProjects WP:GERMANY and WP:WikiProject European Union as well as WP:LAW are good projects for questions about laws in general. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 22:37, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

@Michael D. Turnbull @Treetoes023 I don't agree that the page number is what matters here, because this is not a book, nor citing a permanently archived webpage. Depending on the language (German/English) the page number may change, but the section and paragraph should stay the same. Additionally, prior paragraphs could be modified/removed, changing the page numbers, but the section ought to stay the same. In German legal texts, an act like this could be cited as AufenthG § 43 (2). I am not a legal scholar though, but regularly work with German legislation, in my work as a works council chair. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 22:45, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

@Treetoes023: I'm glad my lack of knowledge prompted others to chip in! I assumed the legislation was a directive as I saw that word several times in the first page but I now realise that Shushugah is correct and it's an Act. The template allows for various parameters as free text, so you could have Act on the Residence, Economic Activity and Integration of Foreigners in the Federal Territory (PDF) (AufenthG § 43 (2)). Federal Ministry of Justice and the Federal Office of Justice. 17 February 2020. p. 69. for example (the rendering as "No." comes from using the |index parameter). However, as already suggested, you might be better to take any detailed questions to the experts elsewhere on-Wiki Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:25, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

In general, I don't find the template that useful for German legislation. I checked all the usages of it, and none of them are used for German legislation. I would simply use AufenthG § 43 (2) and hyperlink it with the exact section in German or English

So in the end, without a template I would use AufenthG § 43 (2). German federal legislation is usually available as a single HTML/PDF page, as well as HTML page of specific sections. User space name change

@DaydreamBelizer: I have done this, though you should be able to move pages yourself, and you could request for the redirect left behind in this case to be deleted under G6 or U1. I can't quite tell why the archive bot decided Archive 5 was the right place to archive to, so you may encounter this issue again, unless another volunteer can work out what is wrong (if anything) with the code used on your user talk page. — Bilorv (talk) 19:46, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Linking short form citations to bibliographies/references

I'm having trouble getting short form citations to link for one particular book cite to its respective bibliographies. The book cite includes the year (as opposed to date) as required but when I click on footnote links either in "hover mode" or in the actual notes/references section, nothing happens. Meanwhile, this is working for other citations, yet I can't see any difference between the book cites others have entered, which work, and mine, which don't. Also, to be clear, the book cites themselves link to the appropriate external sites so that's not the problem.

I've tried this internal linking with three different short forms - harvnb, Sfn, and ref# (not sure what these are called) - and I'm having no success with any of them. A couple of the articles/bibliographies in question include:

• Constitutional Convention
• Timeline U.S. Constitution

The problem I described concerns the referenced book Warren (1928), which displays in the Notes sections but as I said, doesn't link from there to the Bibliography. Thanks. Allreet (talk) 18:21, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

@Allreet, I've fixed the problem. The Warren entry had "|ref=Warren1928" which prevented the link from working and I removed it. The custom "ref" anchor isn't needed unless you need to use something other than the automatically created link. See Wikipedia:Citation templates and reference anchors for details. @StarryGrandma: Sweet! I had worked with Sfn and harvnb and wasn't familiar with the ref anchor format. Now I know. So, no ref= for me - or for that matter, the alternative format. Article viewing statistics (or something)

While trying to view the article viewing statistics under the "Page information" option on an article, and it turned out on any article, I was not able to get them. @Carptrash: Please always post an example and try to be precise. "Page information" at Example has nothing called "Article viewing statistics" for me. Are you referring to "Page views in the past 30 days" in the "Basic information" section, "Page view statistics" in the "External links" section, or something else? Both work for me. Some talk pages like Talk:Cannabis has "Daily pageviews of this article" but it's not in "Page information". It works for me. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:17, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Sorry, I did not mean to be obtuse. So, take Wilder Brigade Monument as an example. Under “tools” on the right is a link to “Page information.” If you go to the almost bottom of that page you find “Page view statistics.” When I click on that link I get some odd posting stating, “Wilder Brigade Monument: Error querying Pageviews API - Unknown” More or less the same thing happens to me on any page. If you can access the Wilder Brigade Monument stats could you post a link to them here and I’ll see if I can get them that way. Thanks, Carptrash (talk) 22:26, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

This redirects to https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&range=latest-20&pages=Wilder_Brigade_Monument. It works for me and appears to show (in a different format) the same views as "Page views in the past 30 days" in the "Basic information" section. What is your browser? I have Firefox 106.0.1. Neither of the links here worked for me, I continued to get the “Wilder Brigade Monument: Error querying Pageviews API - Unknown” message. However I did find the graph on the basic information which does give me the information I need to continue the discussion on the Wilder Brigade Monument talk page. Thanks everyone. I my browser is Google Chrome and about every two or three weeks all pictures on wikipedia disappear until I go through some voodoo and get them back. It sucks but seems to be a fact of life. My computer is old, some of my software goes back to 2004, the year I started editing here, and my attempts to get other browsers generally don't work. I think it is called "PROGRESS." @Carptrash: It works for me in Google Chrome 107.0.5304.63 on Windows 10. Which version do you have? You can enter chrome://settings/help in the address bar to see it. Which operating system do you use? Does Chrome have extensions, e.g. NoScript? Enter chrome://extensions to see it. If it has extensions then try to disable them with a toggle at chrome://settings/help. Is JavaScript enabled? You can check it at https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/is-javascript-enabled. Even if it's enabled there, you may have settings or extensions which disable or block it in circumstances at other sites. https://pageviews.wmcloud.org requires JavaScript. I was accused of vandalism (see my talk page) for replacing Category:2004 disasters in Asia with Category:2004 disasters in Japan (part of a series!), and have reverted the change.
