Reference error

edit

Hi Wikipedia editors and administrators, last edit chance, inside the Wikipedia article, I spotted there is a mismatch in website in reference 110. So a question, how can I do to repair this problematic error? That would be very valuable of you to help. Thanks very much for your care. GreatPersonLikeMe (talk) 04:35, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Inside the Wikipedia article": Inside which Wikipedia article? "Mismatch in website": I don't understand. -- Hoary (talk) 05:22, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have fixed the coding of reference 110 in the Wikipedia article. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:17, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

trying to open a new article

edit

Hi, over the last weeks, there has been a lots of news about Luis Felipe Tilleria, he is the first latinamerican in being elected as Councillor in the City of London and is a latinamerican leader. Can anyone help me on doing an article for him? I have quite a lots of material as per my journalism background Jaime.bank (talk) 12:12, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL
There isn't enough to go on for a separate article about him, see WP:NPOL for more detail.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 12:44, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Getting a new library database included on the Book sources page?

edit

There is no search option for books in Maine, USA on the Book Sources page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:BookSources?isbn=Special%3ABookSources%3Fuselang%3Dqqx#Find_on_Wikipedia. Not sure who to ask, but can we change this? Pwilliams47 (talk) 13:07, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Pwilliams47: if you know of accessible library databases that are specific to Maine, then feel free to recommend them at Wikipedia talk:Book sources. If you are looking for a book in Maine, I suggest you use Worldcat, which is more or less a compendium of many, many catalogues and which has has the ability to sort by distance from you location.

How do I fix the layout of wikipedia to be normal again and not narrow on my wide computer screen?

edit

As described above - wikipedia now only uses half of my screen and has ugly white bands on the left and right side of the content. How do I fix this? Thanks! 2002:CB07:7877:0:74F0:B084:F12B:7CB4 (talk) 13:39, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Click on Switch to old look from the menu on the left. Davidelit (Talk) 14:11, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Davidelit, there is no such thing for IP editors. IP editor, you will need to use the toggle in the lower right corner of the screen - it looks like a little box. That will switch between fixed width and full width. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 14:37, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
More specifically, it appears as   when limited width is enabled. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 19:51, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:VECTOR2022 for more information about the new layout and reasons for it. 331dot (talk) 15:19, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On the Tony Tulathimutte article, should these links that were removed on the article due to it being turned into a shock site be reported somewhere? I'm not checking the links out. Not sure if I should ask this or this is the proper place. I'm sure this may go against Wikipedia:NOTAFORUM. Cwater1 (talk) 15:59, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Cwater1: web pages are often archived on the internet archive archive.org, and this one was. in these cases it is not generally appropriate to remove the reference. You should replace the raw weblink in the article with a {{cite web}} template, fill in the appropriate parameters, fill in the archive parameters, and set the link status to "usurped". Once you do all that, anyone who click on our link will go to the archive. -Arch dude (talk) 17:13, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The links were removed due to the links being bad. Thanks for the tip, I can remember this for the future. Cwater1 (talk) 17:59, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Italics in templates

edit

Does anyone know how to italicize text in a template? I'm trying to italicize text inside the interlanguage link template but none of the normal methods seem to work. Andumé (talk) 19:28, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See the template's documentation: Template:Interlanguage link § Italics and quotation marks.
Trappist the monk (talk) 20:12, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The method described in the documentation italicizes all of the text. Is it possible to only partially italicize the text? Andumé (talk) 21:21, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently not. You can hack a similar rendering:
[[Un papillon sur l'épaule|Un ''papillon'' sur l'épaule]]&#8202;''<span class="noprint" style="font-size:85%; font-style: normal; ">&nbsp;&#91;[[:fr:Un papillon sur l'épaule|fr]]&#93;</span>
Un papillon sur l'épaule [fr]
Trappist the monk (talk) 21:45, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@I Am Andumé: Use |lt= to display anything you want. {{ill|Un papillon sur l'épaule|fr|lt=Un ''papillon'' sur l'épaule}} produces Un papillon sur l'épaule [fr]. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:16, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help. Andumé (talk) 22:24, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Indicating geographically limited access to sources in CS1/2 citation templates

edit

As I live in Europe, I often encounter sources that aren't accessible outside the United States. The documentation for {{limited access}} says that it can be used in cases of "providing the contents only to certain IP ranges/locales". However, it also says: "This template should only be used on references input as free text. Access signaling has been integrated in the CS1/2 citation templates. See the relevant documentation."

Unfortunately, the "relevant documentation" doesn't seem to provide any option for indicating geographically limited access – it only pertains to registration and subscription requirements. So I don't know how to mark CS1/2-cited sources as having geographically limited access. Is there a way to do that? Joriki (talk) 20:43, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There is no specific parameter value for |url-access= detailing geographic limitations. |url-access=limited should be sufficient to the task.
Trappist the monk (talk) 20:55, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The documentation says "limited: free access is subject to limited trial and a subscription is normally required". That's also what the dotted lock icon suggests: A mild form of what the full lock icon stands for. People in the US who can access the content without restrictions might remove such a seemingly inapplicable access indicator. Shouldn't there be a separate one for geographical limitations? Joriki (talk) 21:14, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to see a change in how cs1|2 handles limited access urls, raise the topic at Help talk:Citation Style 1.
