editsearch
edithi - i we know we can search the entire wikipedia for any key words - but can we search a particular article for key words? 220.245.65.85 (talk) 00:03, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- @220.245.65.85 - You might be interested in pressing the Ctrl key and F key on your keyboard at the same time. casualdejekyll 00:10, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Or the "command" key (the one conventionally marked ⌘) and the F key if your computer is from Apple. Also, browsers for phones usually have a "search within page" menu option. -- Hoary (talk) 01:43, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- If you're on mobile, you'll have to expand all the sections to search the full article. The browser's search functionality will not detect matches in sections that are collapsed. Folly Mox (talk) 05:52, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
Reporting malicious editor
editHi there. How do I report a malicious editor on my Wiki profile? Someone/s keep going in and removing current, cited information and restructuring the profile as a smear.
AgilityQueen (talk) 02:30, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- AgilityQueen, welcome to this encyclopedia. If you want to call an encyclopedia article a "profile", you are free to do so; but if you are using "profile" to suggest something akin to what one might find at LinkedIn, you've got the wrong idea. You seem to be saying that you are Cylvia Hayes. If you are indeed her, then you have a conflict of interest. Please read and digest WP:COI and make any suggestion for improving the article at the foot of Talk:Cylvia Hayes. -- Hoary (talk) 02:47, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- And since I am not the subject of the article then how do I report malicious editing to a Wikipedia article? I am a new editor and know of several articles that clearly include negative and skewed information. AgilityQueen (talk) 03:00, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- @AgilityQueen: Your edits were reverted because their tone is completely unsuitable for an encyclopedia, and they appear to be promotional, especially when you add external links into the body of the article. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:09, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. I am now understanding the external links piece. I would like to know why updated information with current developments, cited, with no external links were also deleted. AgilityQueen (talk) 03:18, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- AgilityQueen, as you say you aren't the subject of the article, perhaps you'd explain what you meant above by the "my" within "my Wiki profile". ¶ You ask above about "malicious editing to a Wikipedia article" and the inclusion of "negative and skewed information". I'll take "negative information" about somebody to mean information about somebody that helps create an unfavorable impression of that person. If this information faithfully summarizes what's said in reliable sources, then it normally belongs in the article that this person has for other reasons. If what's said in the article exaggerates or distorts the sources cited for it, then the summary should be rewritten or cut. If the article either concentrates unduly on the negative or whitewashes it, then there's a problem of lack of neutrality; you can bring this up at WP:NPOVN. As the subject is alive, the normal place to bring up major problems is WP:BLPN. Avoid any attempt to discuss a problem with an article at more than one place at one time: if you start a discussion about this article at either WP:NPOVN or WP:BLPN, please say here that you have done so. -- Hoary (talk) 04:54, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- AgilityQueen, I see that with this edit you removed several paragraphs of well-referenced content from Cylvia Hayes, making it over 2000 characters shorter, but gave the edit summary "added citation and current update". Please be aware that all your contributions to Wikipedia are preserved for ever, and can be read by anyone, including journalists. Maproom (talk) 08:04, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

Ref. number 166 is in red and I have tried really hard please fix it.Thanks and please leave in quote. I am so tired of it all and sorry. Thanks.175.38.42.62 (talk) 07:54, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Done. Same error as the last one I fixed for you: the current year is 2023, not 2033. Maproom (talk) 08:08, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hello Western Australia. Let's take a quick look at how the reference was. As I read this, it was not in red. Part of it was in red or brown, the part [and I'll use a different color]: {{cite news}}: Check date values in: |access-date= (help). Do you see this? I parse this as "There's something wrong with the syntax of this instance of the 'cite news' template. Check the value for 'access-date'." So I look at it and read access-date=29 August 2033. Do you not see this? -- Hoary (talk) 10:49, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
Editing NCYC page
editRe. National Collection of Yeast Cultures - Wikipedia
Hello, I have prepared an updated version for this page to reflect the accurate changes made, and have approval from an approved representative of NCYC to display their logo on their wikipedia page. Could you please provide me with the link that includes the form I will need to send to the NCYC approved representative to confirm in writing that I can use their logo on their wikipedia page? I am not a paid employee of the NCYC. Thank you. Chrisqibextra (talk) 11:56, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Chrisqibextra: First, National Collection of Yeast Cultures is Wikipedia's article about the National Collection of Yeast Cultures, and not in any way "their Wikipedia page". Articles are not owned by their subjects. As for the logo, please see WP:DONATEIMAGE. "Permission for Use in Wikipedia", while ... lets call it noble... is irrelevant. The english Wikipedia only accepts media files for which one of the following holds true for the file in question:
- It is provably public domain
- It is provably licensed under one of several free licenses
- It meets all of the non-free content criteria.
- I do not know wether you also want to make text changes, but if so, I would like to emphasize what several admins have written at User talk:Chrisqibextra#March 2023 some 5 months ago and would like to add that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Victor Schmidt (talk) 12:31, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Fwiw, I added a logo. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:10, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Chrisqibextra, National Collection of Yeast Cultures is indeed Wikipedia's article about the collection; and it is of course the collection's Wikipedia page, just as, say, Pythagoras is Pythagoras's page. I hardly need point out that Pythagoras, being dead, owns nothing. To talk of the NCYC's Wikipedia page shouldn't, needn't, and probably doesn't imply any kind of ownership. Of course the NCYC doesn't own its Wikipedia page, but we shouldn't feel under any obligation to adhere to fictions about the meanings of the genitive case. -- Hoary (talk) 06:15, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
Merging articles
editCan you please advise whether these two articles are suitable for merging?
Davis is scheduled to go on trial for terrorism offences, so there'll be more coverage of him to come. El-Wahabi is his wife & was convicted/jailed for funding terrorism in 2014. I don't think there's enough coverage of her to merit a standalone article. I don't believe the merge would be controversial, neither article has many watchers & the original editor of both articles (User:Geo Swan) is no longer around to ask. I've never attempted a merge before so I thought I'd better check first. 😅 Thank you. DSQ (talk) 12:17, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- As much as I hate the idea of merging a woman's biography into that of her husband's, I can't disagree that el-Wahabi certainly feels very WP:BLP1E, and would probably make more sense as a redirect to a section of Davis's article (I think it's MOS to bold her name in the section for people who arrive there from the redirect). Hopefully any merger will negate the need for the opening sentence-paragraph at Amal el-Wahabi, which ends ... for her husband, Aine Lesley Davis in her clothing, which makes it sound like Aine is only Amal's husband when he's wearing her clothing, like a secret identity (and anyway wouldn't that make it their shared clothing?) Folly Mox (talk) 14:04, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- 😂 I didn't even notice the opening sentence! Nearly spat my tea.... Yeah, I'll get rid of that. She was the first British woman to be convicted for terrorism offences relating to Syria. But still, there's been no cverage of Amal since 2014, not that I can find anyway. Thank you very much for your help Folly Mox, appreciate it. I'll tackle that this evening & if I break something I'll be back. --DSQ (talk) 14:23, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
Alphabetical Order
editIs it possible to consult Wikipedia articles in alphabetical order? For example, to jump in at one point and then browse forwards/backwards one page at a time? Thank you! 2A01:CB14:802E:800:E9E:7BFE:1515:EFAC (talk) 13:46, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Special:AllPages is in alphabetical order. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:32, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Ouch! I find Wikipedia:Contents/A–Z index rather more useful. Shantavira|feed me 15:39, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
My edit for myobacterium marinum
editQuestion for the help desk: I suffered with myobacterium marinum for years and finally found a solution for my sore that would not heal. I posted it to the site and it was there for years. There was also another treatment posted which I found reassuring. When I checked the site recently both were gone. I rewrote my treatment but have not seen it posted and wonder if it will be and why the two treatment recommendations were removed? Thanks. I'm not sure how this works.....will I see an answer somewhere at some point? Artlove7 (talk) 19:35, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Wikipedia has much stricter sourcing requirements when editing about medical treatments, mostly because Wikipedia cannot practice medicine. Please see WP:MEDRS. Your personal account is unfortunately not acceptable as article content, especially for a medical matter. This isn't like social media where people can share what works for them- it must be published somewhere that can be verified, like a medical journal. 331dot (talk) 19:56, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Artlove7, welcome to the helpdesk. In short, here [1] you are basically using a WP-article as your blog, telling a personal story. You can't. A WP-article on any subject is supposed to be a summary of published WP:RS, and when the topic is human health, we demand really high-quality sources, more on that at WP:MEDRS.
- So, for something like this, you have to find another forum than Wikipedia. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:56, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Artlove7 Your August 12 edit was reverted as you did not cite a reliable medical source. Personal anecdotes are original research, which we don't allow.
- That said, I notice your anecdote was about using hot compresses to treat the infection. A couple years ago it came to our attention that large portions of the article were copied from a few different sources, in violation of our copyright policy. The offending history was hidden and the article re-written. I notice that the hidden history does contain mention of using hot compresses to treat the infection, so it is likely that is when your information was removed. See here for discussion about the copyright problems.
- If you can find a reliable medical source about using heat to treat the infection, you can add that information and cite the source, just make sure that (a) you don't copy any one else's text, and (b) it is not inserted in the form of a personal anecdote. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 19:57, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- I would further add that the fact your information had been present for years was pure happenstance; a volunteer editor never noticed it until it was removed. 331dot (talk) 19:59, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
Reviewed or rejected?
editThe page I submitted for Mark Winston Griffith says it hasn't been reviewed, but then when I googled him with "wikipedia" I found a Wikitia page identical to the one I submitted.
There are many people far less well-known than this subject who have pages on Wikipedia. How might I improve the chances of this being accepted—and has it been rejected or still awaiting review?
THANKS! FelaIvy (talk) 21:15, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Felalvy Please see other stuff exists. It could be that these other articles you have seen are also inappropriate and simply not addressed yet. As this is a volunteer project, it is possible for inappropriate articles to get by us. We can only address what we know about. If you would like to help us out, you can identify inappropriate articles you have seen for possible action. We need the help.
- To answer you, you successfully submitted your draft and it is pending. This could take some time, please be patient. 331dot (talk) 21:26, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks! I was unclear whether it was rejected or pending. I'm not complaining AT ALL about the timeframe. I was just wondering what the status was. FelaIvy (talk) 00:20, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- @FelaIvy, Wikitia is an entirely separate entity that will poach and publish many drafts not found to be acceptable for Wikipedia. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:44, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- FelaIvy, it's promising (and I hope that the changes I made to it a few minutes ago were for the better), but it really needs a bit more work. -- Hoary (talk) 22:58, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hoary, I don't see the changes when I look at your version. I've read a number of the articles about creating an entry. Wondering if you might give me some pointers as to where I could improve? Thanks in advance! FelaIvy (talk) 00:22, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- Is it the things you flagged-the lack of sources for personal? FelaIvy (talk) 00:24, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- FelaIvy, far too much of your draft content is unreferenced. Please provide references or remove that content. Cullen328 (talk) 00:28, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
