Assistance in writing a physics/chemistry-heavy article

edit

Hello people, I'm looking for assistance in writing an article on the chain-melted state of matter, linked here -> User:SonOfYoutubers/Chain-Melted state - Wikipedia. I'm not asking for someone to write it for me, unless you really want to, but I need assistance in explaining the physics/chemistry part of the article, as well as actually understanding the sources I'm reading, which use a lot of formulas and language and vocabulary that I simply do not understand. Thank you in advance for anyone willing to help! SonOfYoutubers (talk) 01:08, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

SonOfYoutubers I'll have a quick look, you could also try asking the relevant Wikiprojects Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:03, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It might be an idea to move it from your personal space into the Draft namespace when seeking collaboration. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 10:50, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@SonOfYoutubers I think you have done a good job of creating a draft, which as advised should be best moved into draft-space and then submitted for review (see WP:AFCREVIEW for details). We have specialists like User:Graeme Bartlett who would I think be happy to accept your draft even in its current state. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:45, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So I move the page to draft and submit it for review? I don't need to add any additional information? SonOfYoutubers (talk) 20:49, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@SonOfYoutubers Yes, it is now at Draft:Chain-Melted state and I've added a template at the top so you can submit it for review at your leisure. Note that the first part should be a summary (see WP:LEAD) and hence you might think of tweaking some of the content into sections below. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:34, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you very much! One thing though, how do I get experts to see my page? Do I just wait and eventually someone takes notice or do I specifically tag someone? SonOfYoutubers (talk) 02:05, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Made-up place?

edit

Hello I found this article Tannertown, Pennsylvania but the reference is a 404 and I searched the web and couldn't find any proof that it is a real place. It mentions a Mayor Doug Richard but I searched for him and I don't think he exists either (why would a ghost town even have a mayor?). It's weird. What should I do? Neropenna (talk) 01:28, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I looked again and I found a reference [1] so it seems to be real. I'll see if I can add it to the article. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neropenna (talkcontribs) 01:33, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Neropenna: I also found it in the USGS Geographic Names Information System see here. DuncanHill (talk) 01:41, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you I'll add that one too! Neropenna (talk) 01:45, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Did you have a question about using or editing Wikipedia? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 06:38, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why is that page not semi-protected? It just got blanked by an IP, and given that it is a maintenance category used by bots, it seems odd that anyone could edit it like this. ChaotıċEnby(talk) 07:52, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Chaotic Enby: Edits like that are unlikely to confuse the bots. The bots probably only read and process the list of articles, not the text at the top of the category page. A bad/test edit every few months isn't enough to warrant protection, usually. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:13, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I was just afraid because there were several templates that got deleted when blanking along with the text, and I wasn't sure if some bots relied on these to know how to deal with the category. ChaotıċEnby(talk) 08:15, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notifications

edit

Normally, when a notification at the top of a page is read, it is greyed out with an option to remove altogether. I have two wikidata notifications that have greyed out, but there seems to be no obvious way to remove them. One has been there for a month. Please help Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:24, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is this for Wikipedia? To my knowledge there isn't any way to actually delete notifications or alerts; only mark them as read, which can be done by clicking on the small blue circle that appears in the top-right corner of an item when hovering over it. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 11:12, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jimfbleak All your notifications should be at Special:Notifications, which shows them in batches of 50 by default. There are options to change the things you are notified about but not, as Tenryuu says, to delete them. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:37, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tenryuu and Michael D. Turnbull: thanks, I meant "marked as read", I guess. A real "duh" moment, despite all the years I've edited here, I didn't realise what the blue dot as for... Problem solved Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:15, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to change the title of a category?

edit

Hello everyone, So the Wikipedia page As-Salt is named As-Salt, however the Category is Category:People from Al-Salt, how can I change it to People from As-Salt and ensure it works? Thanks Chacabangaso (talk) 10:42, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Chacabangaso Al-Salt is a redirect to As-Salt, so I wouldn't worry about it. Technically, category titles are changed in the same way as article titles are, by a WP:MOVE. See that page for moving categories (which describes how to request the move). Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:31, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Chacabangaso category names can be changed by a nomination at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion or in simple cases Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy. I have nominated Category:People from Al-Salt at the latter. TSventon (talk) 13:04, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Accessing and changing details for an account

edit

Hello, I am having problems with another, older account of mine, which has existed since about 2006. I am currently logged into it on some devices, but have forgotten the password, and cannot change it as the email address is inaccessible. I realize that this would go against normal procedures - but I would desperately like to retain access to this account and change the password/email address. Is there any way to help with this? Thank you 138.251.189.184 (talk) 11:40, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

IP editor. If you have access to the account on a device, just navigate to Special:Preferences and set up a current email address. That page also has a link to change the password: but set the email address first! Incidentally, many browsers remember the credentials for the websites where they add them automatically, so by going into the settings on your browser, you should be able to find the old password. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:21, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You need the password to change the email address. See Template:Committed identity. If your real identity is private and you want it to stay like that then you can use the template while logged in to say which email address you want to be set for the account. Whether you can get somebody to do it is another matter and may depend on your contribution level but a committed identity is an important step to get a chance. Do it before randomly losing your login which often happens. Then you can try a request at phabricator. Local Wikipedia administrators like me do not have access to set an email address for others. Carlton Heard

edit

Hi –

Could you please review my references and inform me which sources are not reliable? All the sources come from outlets such as ESPN, Apple, Tubi, etc. Is the issue related to the order of the references, or is it related to how the article is written? Please advise on the steps I should take to ensure approval.

Page: Draft:Carlton Heard BlackSpace7 (talk) 13:38, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

BlackSpace7 First, please disclose your connection to Heard, please see WP:PAID and WP:COI.
The issue is not the sources themselves, but their content- none of them seem to have significant coverage of Heard- coverage that goes beyond merely documenting his career. 331dot (talk) 13:41, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see you've discussed this somewhat on your user talk page- you have posted what appear to be professionally taken images of Heard and claimed them as your own work. Did you take these images? 331dot (talk) 13:43, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi 331dot –
Thanks for reviewing. Yes, these are my photos. So an article like https://www.espn.com/blog/sec/post/_/id/105391/low-meet-the-walk-on-who-changed-the-sec is not significant coverage? Or https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/carlton_heard
-Carlton BlackSpace7 (talk) 14:30, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the first sources is an interview with him, which is not an independent source as by definition it is Heard speaking about himself. The RT source is a basic entry for him and does not provide significant coverage of him. 331dot (talk) 14:36, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@BlackSpace7: In addition, 7 of the 17 references failed verification. Your goal should be to gather independent reliable sources and write the draft based on what the sources say. GoingBatty (talk) 19:18, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate the guidance! Could you please share which sources were approved? Having that list will enable me to craft the article more effectively.

Rotate image

edit

Hi there I would like to rotate an image for The Edge of Ice Have gotten a little cnofused how to do it Britfilm (talk) 14:18, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Britfilm The template {{Transform-rotate}} can do this. Alternatively, you can ask for the underlying image to be rotated on Commons (assuming it isn't needed elsewhere in its current form). Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:34, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fix the schedule of August 7, 1984 Bronze and Gold final at the 1984 Women's Volleyball Los Angeles Olympics schedule

edit

I need help here to make sure that the bronze and gold finals be fixed together in the schedule of Women's volleyball tournament at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics on August 7, 1984. 108.21.67.83 (talk) 17:27, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As mentioned a few days when you made a similar post, the best place to ask first for editing assistance is the article's talk page. If you're asking about Volleyball at the 1984 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament, then the talk page is Talk:Volleyball at the 1984 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:45, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, thank you. I have to find another way to have problems solving. 108.21.67.83 (talk) 05:33, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Getting current edit number

edit

I am trying to use the Service award progress template, but I want to make it update with the current edit number. How would I go about doing that?
Thanks, 23emr (talk) 18:19, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@23emr: Hi there! In Special:Preferences, on the "User profile" tab, you'll see your number of edits. GoingBatty (talk) 18:38, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And then, change the {{Service award progress}} template from |edits=310 to your current number of edits. GoingBatty (talk) 18:40, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any way to do it automatically? 23emr (talk) 18:40, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No. This would put an unreasonable load on the servers. ColinFine (talk) 18:56, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
