editHelp restoring links
editI was trying to edit the Wikipedia page of Deion Sanders, and I accidentally deleted the link to his page for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. Do you think you could fix that, please? I can't seem to find a way to get those links back. MichaelEhlenbeck (talk) 00:16, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- Courtesy link: Deion Sanders
- Also, I added a header to this question. RudolfRed (talk) 00:58, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @MichaelEhlenbeck: Done On the article, I clicked the "View history" button, found your edit, and reverted it. GoingBatty (talk) 03:42, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
Add name and info to list of notable alumni at Univ. of Florida
editHello. I’d like to add a name to the list of notable alumni in Broadcasting to the Univ. of Florida page.
Dave Culbreth Former sportscaster at WCAU-TV in Philadelphia and investigative reporter at WXIX-TV in Cincinnati. 2601:702:4200:1570:2904:5544:D262:14E0 (talk) 03:00, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi there! In order to add a person to an article such as List of University of Florida alumni, there needs to be a Wikipedia article about them. I don't see an article for
Dave CulberthDave Culbreth. GoingBatty (talk) 03:41, 11 April 2024 (UTC)- Nor is there one for Dave Culbreth (not to be confused with Dave Culbert). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 151.227.145.123 (talk) 08:37, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

- There are various noticeboards for reporting user behavior. Please expand on what problem you are seeing, so we can help you find the right place. Also, sometimes reporting a user is not the best path, but discussion is. RudolfRed (talk) 03:34, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Correct the sentence of Closing Ceremony Athens 2004
editCan you look and see if the sentence is correct of synopsis of the Closing Ceremony of the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics? I just put in joining tonight at thr Closing Ceremony, His Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic Constantinos Stephanopoulos. Accompanied by Adjutant Officer to the President of the Hellenic Republic Air Force Colonel Georgios Dritsakos. Followed by Anne Rogge, wife of IOC President Jacques Rogge, and IOC Vice-President James L. Easton and his wife Phyllis Easton of the United States. 108.21.67.83 (talk) 06:34, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- (i) This "synopsis" is unreferenced. (ii) The "synopsis" isn't written in sentences. (iii) Wikipedia prefers straightforward prose. Thus for example not "His Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic" but instead "the President of Greece" (or even "the Greek President"). -- Hoary (talk) 12:28, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
Removal of 'British' descriptions and categories
editThere seems to be a long-standing and consistent movement to reallocate any person or anything away from being described as 'British' and towards 'Scottish', 'Welsh', 'English', and 'Northern Irish'. This applies to both in-article descriptions and to categories. Can someone point me to where this was discussed and agreed, so I can understand the arguments and justification? Masato.harada (talk) 07:35, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- It's quite straight forward: if a Scotsman does something good, he's Scottish, if he does something bad he's British; if an Englishman does something good he's British, if he does something bad he's English. It's not just Wikipedia. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 09:14, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- I have no idea what the consensus is (and I don't much care, though I am British, English, and a probationary Yorkshireman - I've only been here 32 years) but you'll find discussion at Wikipedia:British Isles Terminology task force/Manual of Style. ColinFine (talk) 09:40, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- There is a footnote at MOS:NATIONALITY, which says
There is no categorical preference between describing a person as British rather than as English, Scottish, or Welsh. Decisions on which label to use should be determined through discussions and consensus. The label must not be changed arbitrarily. To come to a consensus, editors should consider how reliable sources refer to the subject, particularly UK reliable sources, and whether the subject has a preferred nationality by which they identify.
You could also look at the archives of Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biography. TSventon (talk) 10:36, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
I've found a relevant discussion in Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biography/2007-2008 archive: British nationality. It's pretty lengthy, and I've only skimmed it, but I don't see any conclusion which agrees to working through existing articles and categories and changing them from 'British' without a justification. My worry is that there is some nationalist agenda driving a hidden project to replace 'British' with a country name, without explicit discussion and agreement. Is there a current working group or interest group which might be interested/have a view? Masato.harada (talk) 14:10, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- Masato.harada, you could ask at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biography. There was an ANI discussion on Cornish/English/British a month ago at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1150#Disruptive editing from Gwikor Frank. Unfortunately this question does lead to lengthy discussions. TSventon (talk) 15:10, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
Page moved two times, discussion is still open
editPlease see Mujahid Shah's Vijayanagara campaigns. A request for page move was made by me, but the article has been moved twice while the discussion is still open. Can someone please fix it how it should be? I don't know what to do tbh. Thanks. Imperial[AFCND] 07:58, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- Pages should not be moved whilst an active discussion is taking place. Article is now at its original title, and has been move-protected at admin level for a week. This should be enough time to form a WP:CONSENSUS. Mjroots (talk) 17:44, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. That's what I've requested for. Three users moved it thrice while the discussion was still going on. Imperial[AFCND] 17:46, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
How to link a Wikidata item?
editI just created a redirect Henrietta Lange, which I copied exactly from the existing redirect Hetty Lange since they are two different names for the same character. The existing redirect (Hetty Lange) works and it says: "The Wikidata item linked to this page is Henrietta Lange (Q12316284)." But the new one (Henrietta Lange) is giving the message: "The Wikidata item linked to this page is (no entity). Error: no Wikidata item linked! Either link a Wikidata item or remove this template."
I just cannot see what is missing, to set up this link to Wikidata. Can somebody please explain what I need to do, to set up that link? Gronk Oz (talk) 10:32, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Gronk Oz: A Wikidata item can only list one page at each wiki. If you want it to be Henrietta Lange instead of Hetty Lange then click "Wikidata item" at the latter and edit the entry at Wikidata. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:48, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- I have edited the Wikidata item as "Henrietta Lange" is used more than "Hetty Lange" in Wikipedia. TSventon (talk) 12:14, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Two questions
edit- I know there is a way, but cannot quite recall how, to link one of several definitions at Wiktionary. Specifically, I would like to define the Algerian Ottoman council diwân (alternate spelling "divan") while confusing the reader as little as possible with images of furniture. Is there a way to keep the other definitions from appearing? I am also very open to any other suggestions that anyone may have for this. I do know about the syntax [:wikt:word|word].
- The nice folks at the WikiMedia Commons help desk said it was ok to upload local versions of their images as test edits but mentioned that it would be nice if
I hadany that were definitely not going to be used would be deleted. This does not seem to be mentioned as a use case at MfD however. How would I go about doing this, since I do now have some tidying up to do? Elinruby (talk) 11:59, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Elinruby: Hi there!
- What is the URL of the Wiktionary page you want to link to?
- Does the process at Wikipedia:Guide to image deletion#Other concerns meet your needs?
- Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 14:42, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- wikt:divan#English; consensus seems to be that this is somewhat better for this purpose than the en-wiki article although I have not myself checked it in detail.
- I think so... these are images that came from Commons but are quite old and rather murky in thumbnails. So identical to commons image but with color or shadows or contrast tweaked. Does that sound right?
- And thanks for the help, btw. While I have your attention, can I ask if I would be jeopardizing the "faithful reproduction" part of the copyright statement if I did this with an artwork? And would the age of the artwork matter? I would think so? So far I have only added an edited flag to the article itself but there are quite a number of murky engravings, lithographs and paintings in this adventure also, and everything is a minimum of 200 years old. Thank you for the brain power.
- Incidentally, I figured out the answer to my image problem of the other day, if you are curious about that. Out of date browser on paranoid Linux distro. Must click the link to tell it I want to proceed even if it's unclear the link is secure lol Elinruby (talk) 15:43, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
Quotebox + table
editHi all. Is it possible to contain a table within a {{Quotebox}}? If not, is it possible to achieve a similar column effect? Cheers! ——Serial Number 54129 15:31, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Serial Number 54129: I don't see anything about that in the documentation, but you might want to ask at Template talk:Quote box. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:09, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Wikipedia en finally block my Brazil's IP
editSorry if my english grammar bad but i need some help:
I don't know my IP is blocked, but is not affected my account. i'm a PT Wiki and EN wiki editor here. Also i use Wikimedia Commons to upload my Brazilian's city media and others. I only edit with my account, not my IP for avoid false positive.
I edit Wikipedia with Android, my pc, iPhone XR. But i see my wifi setting in my iPhone, i see that's WPA/WPA2 (TKIP) is not safe My IP can change everything, not use VPN or proxy.
My IP block exemption request got not approved for some reason. Vitorperrut555 (talk) 15:56, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- Note: Not affected my principal account, only my IP. Vitorperrut555 (talk) 15:56, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Vitorperrut555: It sounds like there is a WP:SOFTBLOCK on your IP address but you can still edit while logged in. If so, then just make sure you are logged in while editing. If it is something different, please clarify. RudolfRed (talk) 16:00, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
I want to add new information on a site
editI was involved with KSAN FM, and a new book has been published detailing the history of the radio station:
The Jive 95: An Oral History of America’s Greatest Underground Rock Radio Station, KSAN San Francisco
May I add this to the wiki site KSAN (FM)'
Hank Rosenfeld (talk) 20:47, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- If you were involoved with the station, then you have a conflict of interest, and you should make an edit request on the article's talk page, rather than editing the article yourself. ColinFine (talk) 21:10, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Hank Rosenfeld: Since you appear to be the author of the book, you adding the book to the article would be seen as promotion. I agree with the previous comment to submit an edit request if you like, and disclose your involvement with the radio station and the book. Thanks for asking! I want my signature to be different
editI don't want my signature to look like this: 204.2.36.253 (talk) 21:46, 11 April 2024 (UTC). How do I change the color of the signature?
- Some examples can be found on the WP:CUSTOMSIG page. However, if you want the four tilde's to work, you'll need to register an account first. Q T C 21:49, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
unblocking
edithow do i appeal a block? @331dot: 204.2.36.253 (talk) 21:53, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- What is the username under which you are blocked? -- Hoary (talk) 21:59, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- No, how do i appeal a block in general? 204.2.36.253 (talk) 22:02, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- Why is that relevant? You are not blocked. And your circumventing behavior only makes us editors suspect that you are performing block evasion. thetechie@wikimedia: ~/talk/ $ 22:03, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- No, how do i appeal a block in general? 204.2.36.253 (talk) 22:02, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @204.2.36.253: And stop pinging 331dot. thetechie@wikimedia: ~/talk/ $ 22:02, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @204.2.36.253: If this is also you, please read WP:UNBLOCK and stopping posting anywhere on Wikipedia using other accounts. Follow the guidance given in UNBLOCK and seek clarification of your block by logging into the blocked account and posting a message on that account's user talk page. If the other IP posting about isn't you, still read UNBLOCK and follow the guidance it provides. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:04, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly: Isn't that the same user? thetechie@wikimedia: ~/talk/ $ 22:09, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- Same IP address, not necessarily the same person. RudolfRed (talk) 22:25, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- @TheTechie: It might be, but it might not be as RudolfRed points out. In addition, please don't fix my pings; it wasn't broken and I did what I did intentionally. WP:PING (i.e. {{re}}) doesn't work with IP accounts (except when posting on the IP's user take page); moreover, even if it did, the IP would would've been "pinged" by the one you made two minutes before I made my post and, thus, would've almost certainly seen my post too. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:52, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- I see, sorry for the misunderstanding. thetechie@wikimedia: ~/talk/ $ 23:03, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
