Search a person with multiple names

edit

Hello guys I'm writing an articles of Most popular maskandi artists..I want to know how can I make them visible in search when Wikipedia users search them with their popular names...cause most of them have 3 popular names...I want to set the article that if you search with one of all name it go straight to the original page...

Like when you search drake(musician) with drizzy or champagne papi it goes straight to drake

Thanks I will be glad for response Sanelerhoo (talk) 09:36, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When an article has been accepted into the encyclopaedia, then you can create redirects to it from other plausible names. But get the article written and reviewed first.
Since you have little experience of creating new articles, I advise you to go slow, and make sure you understand notability, reliable sources, and neutral point of view. Please study your first article, and have a look at BACKWARDS.
Also bear in mind that I want to know how can I make them visible in search sounds rather as if your intention is promotional: this is forbidden anywhere in Wikipedia. ColinFine (talk) 11:46, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: OP did not say "I want to know how can I make them visible in search"; they said "I want to know how can I make them visible in search when Wikipedia users search them with their popular names", which is a perfectly legitimate aim, fully in line with our mission, Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:29, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks Sanelerhoo (talk) 08:28, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mis-inclusions in AfD listings

edit

Category:AfD_debates_(Society_topics) and Category:AfD debates (Science and technology) currently contain a number of entries that link to individual deletion sorting pages (e.g., to Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Cricket) rather than nominated articles. Anyone know how to throw these out? I can't with these nucular transclusion thingamabobs. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 10:28, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Elmidae: The categories are supposed to be added by parameters to {{REMOVE THIS TEMPLATE WHEN CLOSING THIS AfD}}. This prevents the categories from being added to other pages. You can use a search like [1] to find pages which add the categories directly. It currently finds Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cricket player auction. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:41, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. I shall endeavour to clean this up in a bit. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 13:15, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I work for North Sails and we have just recently switched the company logo as seen on the company website at www.northsails.com

What's the best way to submit / replace the new logo?

Laura.Chrysostomo (talk) 15:25, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Laura.Chrysostomo, firstly you need to make a Paid editing declaration on your User Page by following the instructions at WP:PAID. Qcne (talk) 15:47, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You may visit files for upload to work towards uploading the logo, you can't do it yourself yet. 331dot (talk) 15:48, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Laura.Chrysostomo Like the previous logo, the current one seems to me to be below the threshold of originality for copyright protection, so you can place it on Wikimedia Commons with the same tags as File:North Sails logo.svg (but under a new name). Don't overwrite the existing file, which someone may want to use as part of the history of the company. Preferably, the file type should be .svg. You can work out which articles need to be updated by looking at the Global File Usage of the existing file. There is no conflict of interest in you uploading a new logo: that only becomes relevant when the filename is incorporated into articles. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:16, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mike, thanks for your reply. As a new Wikipedia user I don't have access to upload files / update the logo.
I have the logo available at the address below in case you are able to do so.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sU1akFsId5ZuxQYhmdTNCT09dEJLsyD_/view?usp=sharing
Thanks in advance. Laura.Chrysostomo (talk) 16:33, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Laura.Chrysostomo OK, I've downloaded the file successfully and will shortly upload it to Commons under the filename you supplied. Then I'll update the relevant articles. Meanwhile, please comply with the WP:PAID disclosure (a simple template added to your userpage) in case you want to continue editing or making edit requests where you have a COI. To whom it may concern,

I recently began reformatting the List of photographs considered the most important (check edit history). To make the images accessible for everyone to see, I’ve added an external link for (most) photos that are copyrighted. I don’t think I’m breaking any rules by merely including these external links (ones that host the image legitimately) but I’m not sure either. Can you please tell me if including external links in this manner violates any established rule? – Howard🌽33 15:29, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that this comes into WP:ELYES item 3: Sites that contain neutral and accurate material that is relevant to an encyclopedic understanding of the subject and cannot be integrated into the Wikipedia article due to copyright issues, amount of detail (such as professional athlete statistics, movie or television credits, interview transcripts, or online textbooks), or other reasons, as long as you're sure that the site you are linking to is not itself breaching copyright (see WP:ELNEVER point 1). ColinFine (talk) 16:16, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've made sure to link only to valid hosting sites. You are free to check for yourself. – Howard🌽33 19:49, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a candidate for Northampton North

edit

Hello, I am the Reform UK candidate for Northampton North, would you please advise how I can update the Northampton North page to include myself as a candidate for the next election please? Thank you very much Kind Regards Antony Antoniou Antonyantoniou (talk) 15:34, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a source to confirm that you're standing? If you do, I can add you to that page. Valenciano (talk) 15:39, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly this primary newspaper source but that says he is going to be standing as an independent. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:24, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Knights of St Patrick

Why has the Earl of Eglinton twice Viceroy (Lord Lieutenant) of Ireland been left off your list of officers of the Order? Hugo Swire (talk) 20:26, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hugo Swire: because our volunteer editors are human. If you have a reliable source (WP:RS) you may edit the article to add this information. You have just as much right and responsibility to do this as any of the rest of us. If you are not yet comfortable editing articles, please put a note on the article's talk page, with your source. Thanks. -Arch dude (talk) 20:32, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If I understand, Earl of Eglinton is from Scotland and List_of_knights_of_St_Patrick is for Ireland. But, if there is something that can be improved, please start a discussion on the appropriate article's talk page along with citations from reliable sources. How Can we add this link to the Raven Productions page (Raven Productions Imdb Hello Paradise a TV series Raven Produced from 2000 o 2015? Thank you! - Juliet

If the subject of the entire page is exactly the same as the subject of the IMDb page that you're linking, then you can add it in the External Links section of the article. See Wikipedia:External_links/Perennial_websites#IMDb RudolfRed (talk) 20:50, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What happened to my page?

edit

Hi there. I used to have a really cool page about myself here on Wikipedia. Recently I noticed that it was somehow gone. Is there any way to get it back and update it? Or, do I have to start a whole new page. I'm about to release a book that I've written and it would be great to have my page available to my readers.

Thank you so much

Douglas Sloan (Best known as Producer for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Dreamworks Dragons) Vrdjs143 (talk) 22:03, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It was deleted in 2020 as a result of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Douglas Sloan (television producer). To be frank Wikipedia is not concerned with how the presence or lack of an article about you affects marketing efforts for your book. Autobiographical articles are highly discouraged, please read WP:AUTO. 331dot (talk) 22:21, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well you sure don’t discourage filling my mailbox with requests for donations when you guys are running out of funds. And I always comply donating whatever I can. I wasn’t insinuating that I was trying to use your platform as a way to promote my book. That would be ridiculous. I was merely stating that Wikipedia remains a good source for additional info that may not be available elsewhere. And your attitude towards someone asking a simple question is, to be frank, short sighted and immature at the very least. Also after checking the reason for deletion it described my career as being uninteresting and too behind the scenes. Another short sighted decision. Having only communicated with you all when you were asking for money I figured you might be at least a little polite. My mistake. Vrdjs143 (talk) 22:38, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
None of us, the volunteers answering questions on the Help Desk and related pages, have any involvement with donation operations. Concerns regarding that should be directed towards the Wikimedia Foundation.
Any information found on Wikipedia should ideally be based on information that exists independent of this website. If you have that information, were it news articles, books, or other published material that establishes your notability, it would be very helpful for anyone trying to write the article on Douglas Sloan (television producer). Reconrabbit 23:16, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think that if you just were to Google my name or do a Yahoo search you would probably find enough for an article. So I'll get right on that. My work has historical significance when it comes to children's TV programming and the idea that someone felt it necessary to remove my page is illogical. I can only assume there were ulterior motives behind that and will look into it as well. Vrdjs143 (talk) 23:45, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia only summarizes information that is available elsewhere; it isn't for posting information known only to yourself or that is not published somewhere. If independent sources say your work has historical significance, we can work with that, but any article about you will not necessarily say what you think it should say. As noted, we editors have nothing to do with the donation requests. Wikipedia is not "running out of funds" by any means. 331dot (talk) 23:50, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What I was trying to explain to you is that information about me is literally all across the web from hundreds of sources. I'm not trying to post my CV on your site. I was just asking why mine page was taken down in the first place. And, after reading the conversation that lead to its removal, it seems pretty obvious to me that there were other factors involved that were not mentioned, perhaps for a reason that the deleting parties did not want to mention. Regardless, I'm done with you. I am dismissing you to go back to your basement in Maine and screw with someone else's life. As for me, I'm going to find the person who really knows what they're talking about and hit them up. And, by the way, the desperation in the e mails asking for donations tells another story. Check it out sometime. Vrdjs143 (talk) 00:00, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see your message below as well. I'm not in anyone's basement, please don't buy into stereotypes. I'm quite successful in my life and choose to spend some of my free time here improving this place. I'm not trying to screw with anyone's life. The Foundation does solicit funds to try to expand its endowment, but you can examine the financial statements for yourself, they aren't running out of money. 331dot (talk) 00:12, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And please don't turn this into an idiotic online argument. I've already e mailed Maryana Iskander to ask if she can do anything to correct this issue. So there's nothing more you and I need to say to one another. Vrdjs143 (talk) 22:53, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Emailing the CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation is going to accomplish nothing. They cannot somehow force an article to exist on Wikipedia. 57.140.16.57 (talk) 23:17, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'll find the right person to contact regarding your behavior. I promise. It shouldn't be that hard. Vrdjs143 (talk) 23:46, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is no authority figure to appeal your grievances to. If you have grievances with the behavior of any user, you may go to WP:ANI but be advised that your own behavior will be examined as well. If you were offended by my comments, I apolgize, but please understand that hundreds if not thousands of people every week attempt to use Wikipedia to promote themeselves and what they do. Our interest is in improving this project, not in how it might benefit the subject. 331dot (talk) 23:53, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that. I'm sorry if I found your accusation a bit out of left field as my intention was never to use your platform for self promotion. I just truly believe in my heart that the contributions of me and the people I worked with on these projects contain some historical significance that should not be written off because they are misunderstood. Power Rangers was on the air for 30 years. I helped start it. Dreamworks Dragons changed the face of Children's Programming. I started it. These are significant historical moments in the entertainment world and should not be minimized as mere jobs that one person had. That's all I'm saying. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. Take care. 2600:8800:5D99:9100:B442:4A80:8A77:A4C6 (talk) 00:05, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You have to understand that autobiographies on Wikipedia are highly discouraged, as it is extremely difficult to write about oneself neutrally. Additionally, as other editors have said, your article needs to meet our inclusion criteria. I am very sorry if you are apart of a misunderstood area in the entertainment world, but Wikipedia is not the place to fix that (as per WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS). Happy editing! Industrial Insect (talk) 16:23, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what behavior you're talking about, or what action you're expecting to be taken. If you want to get an article about yourself onto Wikipedia, then the thing to do is read Help:Your first article and follow the instructions. But you may first want to read the explanation that an article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. 57.140.16.57 (talk) 23:55, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Taxobox template help?

edit

Hello! Can someone please advise me regarding the Speciesbox on Cystotheca lanestris. It's throwing a template error message I don't entirely understand. TIA. jengod (talk) 22:43, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! The error that's coming up is caused by there being no existing template for the genus Cystotheca. You can see on one of the linked pages Quercus laceyi that the scientific classification section on the infobox is nicely filled out - that's because the "genus" parameter of the Speciesbox looks for a template that matches what was entered, e.g., Template:Taxonomy/Quercus. You can fix it by creating the appropriate taxonomy template, which the site will try to do if you click (fix) right after the error. I believe all you have to do from there is fill in the taxonomy up to genus level. Reconrabbit 23:21, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to cite multiple archived pages of a newspaper article?

edit

Wikipedia:Newspapers.com#Citations across multiple pages/clippings tells us how to consolidate the links to the clippings of a newspaper article that spans multiple pages into one citation. The section above that one tells us we can archive these clippings. So is there a way we can include the archived versions of the multple clippings in that single citation?
