editChalcatzingo references
editPerhaps this is better suited for the article's talk page, but are the references for Chalcatzingo sufficiently in-line with Wikipedia quality standards now? I feel like I managed to clean up the references, but I would like to get a second opinion on the matter first. Still-Can't-Believe-It's-Not-Butter (talk) 00:02, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, and thanks for the work. I believe the article's inconsistent reference style was the reason the template was added. You've made them all consistent and you can remove that template. StarryGrandma (talk) 00:44, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Suspicious user activity
editI've found an unregistered user who is performing selective content removal under the pretense of it being 'uncited'. However, they will leave other uncited information and will sometimes replace entire paragraphs with new, also uncited, single sentences of information. Sometimes they are adding {{notability}} to the tops of pages. Based on simple Google searches, it seems less a notability issue and more a citation issue. No matter, the content removal and {{notability}} changes seem to be applied largely to articles regarding Iran. I wasn't sure if there may be an ulterior motive and what, if anything, should be done in response or where I should go for further discussion. Thanks. -- Primium (talk) 02:02, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, may you specify anything that may help to identify that specific user, such as the specific articles they edited? Alwaysgonnaedit (talk) 21:22, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Inline citations moved by a bot
editIf I write something like I want to tell you this[c1] and this is also something you need to know[c2].
Then often a bot will change the position of [c2] to I want to tell you this[c1] and this is also something you need to know.[c2]
But I intend [c2] to be just for the second part of the sentence, not for the entire sentence. How can I stop the bot from moving [c2] to after the fullstop? BlueWren0123 (talk) 06:45, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- The bot is doing its job as it should. If you want to make the result clearer, you could split the sentence into two, or add a comma after the first "this". Maproom (talk) 07:59, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- @BlueWren0123: Your wanted syntax is not in MOS:CITEPUNCT or any other guideline I have seen. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:47, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Removing a creation protection
editI see that Anveshi Jain has been creation protected since November 2020. What is the correct procedure for requesting the removal of this protection? I believe I have a well-prepared draft here: Draft:Anveshi Jain. Jeraxmoira🐉 (talk) 13:16, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Jeraxmoira You have submitted your draft for review and it is pending; if accepted, the reviewer will place it in the encyclopedia and arrange for the protection to be removed. That's the proper procedure here. 331dot (talk) 13:19, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- 331dot: Understood. Thank you for the clarification. Jeraxmoira🐉 (talk) 13:23, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Doubt
editOn the page, "Good article", so very reliable, Fasci Siciliani, "Fasci" is written without italics while "Fascio" is written with italics. Why is only the singular written with italics? On the page Fasci d'Azione Rivoluzionaria, "Fasci" is also written in italics. JackkBrown (talk) 14:27, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
"Fasci" on the Fasci Siciliani page should be written in capitals and without italics because it refers to the movement, while "fascio" refers to the term, so it should be written in lowercase and with italics. I hope I'm not wrong. JackkBrown (talk) 15:28, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- JackkBrown, as you have been told repeatedly, you know as much or more about italicization and the Italian language as any other active editor. So, why do you keep asking this type of question here? Cullen328 (talk) 21:24, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Plot summary
editWhen writing a plot summary for a film, what name should the characters go by in the plot summary. First or last name? Shahin007h (talk) 15:08, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Shahin007h: Full name the first time and then the common name, e.g. Bond for James Bond but Luke for Luke Skywalker. See also the last line of Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography#Subsequent use. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:37, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Shahin007h: Note that MOS:FILMPLOT does not offer guidance on this. GoingBatty (talk) 15:44, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Query about deleted page.
editWhy was the page on the Ben Gurion Canal deleted? I have looked at the logs and cannot seem to find it. The page definitely existed and a file that linked to the page can still be found at:
File:Ben Gurion Canal compared to Suez Canal.webp
-- GhostlyClient (talk) 16:23, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- @GhostlyClient: Ben Gurion Canal Project was deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ben Gurion Canal Project. There has been no page called Ben Gurion Canal at the English Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:28, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanking you GhostlyClient (talk) 16:33, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Is there a service template to warn that there are few images (only 3)? JackkBrown (talk) 18:05, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Having only a few images is not really a flaw, unlike having too many. MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE sort of addresses this: "not every article needs images, and too many can be distracting." You can set Template:WikiProject Film to request one for an article that has none, but that's about as far as it goes, as far as I know. Clarityfiend (talk) 18:22, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- There are various Template:Media request templates such as {{image requested}} and {{photo requested}} that you can put on an article talkpage Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 19:49, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- @JackkBrown: If you choose to use one of those templates on a talk page that already has one or more images, please specify within the template what images you're looking for. GoingBatty (talk) 01:55, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Adding information
editI want to add information into the article about Hennessey Performance Engineering. The information is a paragraph about John Hennessey, who started the company. It describes his background as a race car driver. Juliansal29 (talk) 19:03, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- The article is about the company, and not the individual, so accordingly it would probably not be proper to go into extensive detail about Hennessey himself. Possibly a sentence or two might be appropriate, if the necessary third party reliable sources could be found. I'd advise you to locate such sources if you haven't done so already, and then start a discussion on the article talk page. I'll add it to my watchlist to ensure I see it if nobody else does. editing my personal info
editplease let me know how I can modify my email FMurano (talk) 19:04, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- @FMurano: You can set or change your email address in your preferences. Special:Preferences RudolfRed (talk) 19:09, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much, I was able to correct and verify my email. :) FMurano (talk) 19:22, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
What is removing the button that this script adds to the search bar?
editI'm trying to write a userscript to add a "WP" button to the search bar; it's intended to make it easier to look up shortcuts. For example, I can type "AIV" as a search query, then click "WP", and it will take me immediately to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. This is what I have so far:
(function() {
const form = document.querySelector("#searchform")
const text = document.querySelector("#searchform > div:nth-child(1) > div:nth-child(1) > div:nth-child(1) > input:nth-child(1)")
const searchButton = document.querySelector("#searchform > div:nth-child(1) > button:nth-child(2)")
const wpButton = document.createElement("button")
wpButton.className = "cdx-button cdx-button--action-default cdx-button--weight-normal cdx-button--size-medium cdx-button--framed cdx-search-input__end-button"
wpButton.textContent = "WP"
wpButton.addEventListener("click", function(event){
text.value = "Wikipedia:" + text.value
searchButton.click()
})
form.appendChild(wpButton)
})()
It does work as expected, but a few seconds after it runs, the button it creates is somehow removed. This still happens with ?safemode=1 added to the URL, so it isn't caused by one of the other userscripts I have installed. It seems like something in the default JavaScript does this; is there a way to stop it, or work around it? Luke10.27 (talk) 19:48, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- A better venue to ask might be WP:VPT (or you can just post a link there, to this discussion).
- I'm no coder, but can you introduce some sort of delay, so that your button is only added after the page is fully rendered and other scripts have run? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:07, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! I'll post there. I've tried that, and it seems to still get removed. Luke10.27 (talk) 06:25, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
Casualties of the Israel–Hamas war page
editHi, Under Civilians and soldiers header, there is a list of engagements during the Israel–Hamas war. The link name has massacres which is wrong. Can this please be changed. Thank you 2403:5813:30F2:0:813B:82F4:2B60:6B91 (talk) 20:50, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, please send this to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection, and scroll to the "edits for requested pages" section. Avishai11 (talk) 21:25, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Punctuation and Washington, D.C.
editPer Wikipedia's MOS, is it correct to type Washington, D.C. or Washington, DC? And does this answer change if it is at the end of a sentence (e.g. "...in Washington, D.C.." looks weird because it has two periods at the end)? I just created H. Chapman Rose and ran into this issue with a sentence ending "in Washington D.C.". I ended up changing it by removing the periods but I'm not sure what the correct formatting is in general. IntoThinAir (talk) 21:39, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- @IntoThinAir: See MOS:CONSECUTIVE. In cases like this, you just use one period at the end of the sentence. RudolfRed (talk) 21:57, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- [Edit Conflict] See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Abbreviations#Full points (periods). 'Washington, D.C.' is correct, and if it comes at the end of a sentence the last "abbreviation" full point and the "sentence-ending" full stop are merged into one.
- Note however that if the sentence punctuation mark had been anything else than a full stop, they would not be merged, so for example: "Washington, D.C., an important city in the USA, is . . . ." would be correct. This comes up most often when using "etc.". {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 176.24.47.60 (talk) 22:04, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
