Event description
editThe Black Lunch Table (BLT) project at Chicago Art Book Fair will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to the lives and works of Chicago based Black artists. Together we will create & update texts that respond to the urgent need for a reconstruction of the art historical record.
All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. A brief overview of the basics of Wikipedia editing will be given at the start of the edit-a-thon.
About The Black Lunch Table
editThe Black Lunch Table (BLT), an official Wikimedia Movement Affiliate, is an ongoing collaboration between artists Jina Valentine (Fishantena (talk)) and Heather Hart (Heathart (talk)) which intends to fill holes in the documentation of contemporary art history. In its 14 year existence, the BLT has taken a variety of forms relating to this most recent iteration, in the form of the Wikipedia edit-a-thon. BLT’s aim is the production of discursive sites (at literal and metaphorical lunch tables), wherein cultural producers of color engage in critical dialogue on topics directly affecting our communities. They endeavor to create spaces, online and off, mirroring the activity and creativity present in sites where Blackness and Art are performed.

About the Chicago Art Book Fair
editThe Chicago Art Book Fair is an experiment in showcasing emerging directions and diverse legacies within small press arts publishing. The fair features an international group of over 125 arts publishers, small presses, book artists, comics artists, zinemakers and printmakers, with satellite programming and after parties. Beginning in 2017, it drew over 6,000 guests. In 2019, the Chicago Art Book Fair will once again convene at the historic Chicago Athletic Association, at 12 S. Michigan Avenue.
The Chicago Art Book Fair is a project of No Coast (Aay Preston-Myint and Alexander Valentine (artist)), a collaborative venture which is equal parts master printer for artists and an affordable, publicly accessible distributor for contemporary art. No Coast says, "After our travels around the world to different art book fairs, collections, stores, galleries, and libraries, we hope to bring our experiences of many, varied arts publishing events to Chicago. While Chicago is and has been home to many yearly convenings of print enthusiasts, this is the first following the “Art Book Fair” model that has spread to so many communities in recent years."
