Turku

This is pretty much a self-nomination, since I've probably written most of the article myself (but other editors have made important contributions as well, in particular Jyril and Mic). I'd just like to get a few opinions on this one, how it could be improved and whether it stands a chance of ever becoming a FAC. - ulayiti (talk) 16:01, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

a) lacks references; could do with some. b) some of it seems a bit more towards a travel guide than an encylopedia article; for example, information about trains being cheaper than busses. Certainly this shoudn't be repeated c) some of the sentences seem a bit separated from each other, they don't run together; consider "University of Turku was founded on its side. In the late 20th century, Turku displayed unprecedented rates of growth,".

overall, it's quite on track to be a featured article. Mozzerati

Some of the content looks like rather boring lists, such as the education section. I made a few small changes for you during my read through. Some of the sections are rather short, and perhaps can be merged. Also, avoid constructions like this: "Without a doubt, the..." Scott Ritchie 20:38, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning the etymology of 'Turku'. I've seen in numerous places - Finnish, Swedish and English alike - that it is derived from the Swedish torg (then meaning market place), instead of from Russian. Any ideas about this ambiguity?

It comes either directly from Old Russian tǔrgǔ (market place) or from Swedish torg, which too may be of Russian derivation.--Jyril 20:11, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
