About the event
editHave you ever wondered why the information in Wikipedia is extensive for some topics and scarce for others? On Wednesday, 14 November, the University’s Information Services team are hosting an edit-a-thon as part of Wellbeing Week. Full Wikipedia editing training will be given at the beginning of the workshop. Thereafter the afternoon’s editathon will focus on improving the quality of articles about all things related to mental health.
Working together with liaison librarians, archivists & academic colleagues we will provide training on how to edit and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles covering areas which could stand to be improved.
Come along to learn about how Wikipedia works and contribute a greater understanding of mental health!

You can view Featured Articles as exemplars here and consult WikiProject Medicine to ask questions of other editors.
Please also consult the Manual of Style for Medical-related articles.
Within this there is guidance about section headings and article structuring.
Articles should be written for a lay audience with technical terminology explained the first time it is mentioned. Avoid close paraphrasing - copyrighted material is not allowed on Wikipedia. Hit list of articles to be created or improved
editHelpful updates could be as simple as: Making sure reference links are still appropriate and functional; Adding new inline citations/references; Adding a photo; Adding an infobox; Adding data to more fields in an existing infobox; Creating headings; Adding categories; etc.
All are welcome to add names to the list which is intended to serve as a basis for creating new articles in this important but somewhat neglected sector on the English Wikipedia.
The following is a small sample of topics to work on. Feel free to come up with your own ideas!
Pages to improve

Pages to be created
editLooking for ideas
editWe’ve created this Google form to help crowdsource ideas of pages that should be created or improved so feel free to share with appropriate colleagues. Suggest a page to create/improve for our editathon
But where to start looking ?
There are a number of pages missing or requiring improvement from the Mental illness in fiction page and its category. Also the Mental illness in films category.
You can check Wikipedia’s category tree system for ideas of articles (or categories of articles) to look at to see what needs improved or what is missing entirely.
E.g. Category:Well-being, Category:Stress, Category:Mental health in the United Kingdom, History of mental health in the United Kingdom or Category:Neuroscience stubs or Mental and behavioural disorders (this area was identified as having areas of potential misinformation), Category:Life skills, Mental health stubs (stubs are the shortest articles on Wikipedia so are ones likely needing improved in terms of expanding the article with facts from reliable published secondary sources). E.g. WikiProject Psychiatry stub articles and Psychology stubs.
Improvements could mean creating new pages (all we need for a new page is at least 50-100 words based on facts from at least 3 reliable published secondary sources to get started) or:
- expanding pages with more information
- updating pages with more current information
- correcting misinformation
- adding citations
- adding images/diagrams.
- copyediting
- improving the tone or language used so it is more neutral, factual, up-to-date
- writing more about the UK/Scottish context
- improving links to/from pages and categories used.
If you have any suggestions of pages to create/improve based on your experience of the subject and having a cursory look at the content on Wikipedia then please do suggest an improvement here:
Suggest a page to create/improve for our editathon
It will just take a couple of mins to make your suggestion and will really help us prioritise where we should focus our efforts so we get accurate information out there. .
The Manual of Style
editWikipedia has help pages which set out style guidelines for pages being created on certain subject areas. Please have a look at the following pages:
- Manual of Style for Biographies including how to begin the lead paragraph.
- Manual of Style for Novels which includes how to begin the article and what the body of the article should broadly include.
- Manual of Style for Writing about Fiction
- Manual of Style for Biographies of Living Persons
- Wikipedia:Notability (books) - Check that the article is notable enough for inclusion on Wikipedia
- Wikipedia:WikiProject_Novels/ArticleTemplate
