Review of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Steve Poorman

Hello,

I'm writing in regards to a submission of mine, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Steve Poorman. It was denied for insufficient references. I just wanted to see about what I could do to improve this. What level of reference is required for approval, and do you require various sources (e.g. website, book, newspaper, etc.)? Any further detail as to how I could improve this would be greatly appreciated. The article in question is about a person who is well-recognized for his achievements.

All Wikipedia content must be verifiable from reliable sources (such as newspapers, scholarly articles or books published with reputable publishers) that are independent of the article's subject (ie not Poorman's own website or his company's). This is particularly important for living persons. Primary sources may be used to provide details on topics mentioned by secondary sources, but they must be used with care and should not serve as the only basis for our coverage. To provide just a few examples, the claims that Poorman "is recognized for his expertise", about his "wide breadth of knowledge" or that he was "working local fairs with a purchased snow cone machine at age 8" all must be referenced, or they should be removed.

A particularly severe example is the "Activist" section: It's so general and vague it's useless. Who were those "certain politicians" he fought? When did he attack them, and in what forum? What groups did he organize? Was he active on the county, state or federal level? Who said he "was able to leave his footprint on the political realm"? That sections needs more details, and references for those details.

Even worse is the claim about "the largest ever private real estate transaction". I'm pretty sure any real estate deal of that size (hundreds of millions of dollars at the very least, I'd expect) should have made the news, but the Google News archives provide no relevant results. The draft is awaiting review again, but I don't think the text is an adequate representation of what the sources have to say about bee venom therapy. For example, the draft says: "It is said that venom from honey bees can make neurons itself or help the body to make it." It is said by whom? I couldn't find any confirmation of that claim in the sources provided; it seems extremely unlikely that a comparatively simple combination of chemicals such as bee venom could "make neurons itself". Furthermore, some of the sources look anything but reliable to me. The about.com article was written by a medical professional, cites its (primary) sources and was subject to editorial oversight, but Apitherapy News looks like a random individual's personal website. Also, Wikipedia itself is not a reliable source. Other points: Multiple sources, including the About.com piece, note both the lack of scientific evidence and the risk of severe, possibly fatal, side effects. None of the sources mention meridians or acupuncture except in the vaguest terms (one source said that acupuncturists may perform bee venom therapy, and another mentioned that stings in different locations seem to have different effects). For these reasons I don't expect the draft will be accepted in its current form. Huon (talk) 17:18, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your help and guidance. Is it possible for you to add in the notable awards category ( shown in the box on the right hand side of the article) the following as they are important ones:

The Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award for Best Fiction 1996-1998(1999) Odakuzhal Award for the Best work 1998 Padmarajan Puraskaram for the Best short Ficition of 2006(2007)

You can remove the Avaneebalan Puraskaram.

Since the article has long been accepted, it is now outside the scope of WikiProject Articles for creation and this help desk; it may be better to raise issues with the article on its talk page or on the general help desk; you might also ask for help at the WP:Teahouse which specializes in helping new editors.

I have removed the Avaneebalan Puraskaram, but those other awards except the Padmarajan Puraskaram currently are unsourced. I'd prefer not to add awards to the infobox for which we don't have a reliable source - in fact, if no such sources can be found (and my own searches just failed to find any), they should probably be completely removed from the article. You need to kow the image's copyright and licensing status; random images found on the web are likely to be copyrighted with all rights reserved, which will make them unsuitable for Wikipedia. If the image comes with a free license (in particular, with a license compatible with the CC-BY-SA 3.0 License, you can upload the image to the Wikimedia Commons via their Upload Wizard. Once it's uploaded, the picture tutorial explains how to add the image to the article.

I have never done so, but I believe audio files could also be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons if the copyright permits (which is even less likely); you can link to uploaded sound files (preferably in the Ogg or MIDI format) in a manner similar to images. But it might be easier to just add an external link to the website currently hosting the audio interview.

Anyway, I'm not sure Gomes is notable enough for an article. He seems to have received some coverage in secondary sources, but only in connection with one event. It may be better to add that information to an existing article on a related topic, such as Censorship in South Asia#Bangladesh. Huon (talk) 01:37, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
